[00:00:09] nordle: HAHA, I have TV.....but not via MythTV. iamlindoro, mplayer is playing channels fine from channels.conf
[00:00:13] iamlindoro: RyeBrye: Raid 6, it's actually ten drives, but I already had one of them
[00:00:33] iamlindoro: nordle: interesting-- did you import the channels into myth with the channels.conf, or did you do a scan?
[00:00:40] nordle: both
[00:00:53] iamlindoro: ok-- importing the channels.conf is likely not to work, but myth's scan ought to work fine
[00:00:56] iamlindoro: interesting
[00:01:02] iamlindoro: is it a different transmitter, or the same?
[00:01:17] RyeBrye: So the HD-PVR always outputs to a single thread – and it is played back from that thread?
[00:01:18] nordle: I'm guessing there is some residual crap in the database, different transmitter
[00:01:42] iamlindoro: RyeBrye: It outputs single-sliced h.264, which in current linux decoding libraries can only be single threaded on playback-- but that will change very soon
[00:01:49] clever: nordle: ive totaly redone the config for my pvr150 before(without deleting it) and it refused to work
[00:01:50] RyeBrye: Oh, gotcha
[00:02:05] clever: nordle: i moved it to a diff pc and started from adding the card, and it worked instantly
[00:02:18] iamlindoro: nordle: There's also a chance that the new transmitter is giving out information that will confuse myth-- might be worth going to one of the DVB guru devs and having them look at the DB section for your DVB channels
[00:02:24] nordle: clever: damnit, not what I wanted to hear :)
[00:02:30] clever: it was either crap that didnt get lost till i readd the card or the driver
[00:02:55] clever: you could try deleting all capture cards and readding it
[00:03:33] PSU: hi guys, i'm having a problem with my channels...i just did a manual fill database bec. we go a new channel added to our cable lineup...ufnrotunately, the table appears to be hosed now. what's the easiest way to drop the channel table and let mythfilldatabase rebuild?
[00:03:37] nordle: clever, iamlindoro, thanks, I'll try both those things.
[00:04:00] nordle: truncate table channel;
[00:04:26] PSU: nordle: is that safe to do? and then let it rebuild?
[00:04:35] nordle: doh!thats not the fastest, via mythtv-setup is what you want, delete channels there
[00:05:17] nordle: although I'm not having much luck with that at the moment, but yeah, it normally works fine
[00:05:34] PSU: nordle: but i think my table might be screwed up...channel 2 now appears to be 5, 3 – 6, etc from the schedule
[00:06:30] nordle: PSU: Use mythtv-setup, there is an option to delete all channels, and to also import new channels overwriting all current ones, so there are two options to totally start again from within the system.
[00:06:44] PSU: ok, will do. thanks bud!
[00:06:53] nordle: :)

[00:20:57] PSU: nordle: i just tried what you suggested but my channel 2 shows up under 4, 3 as 5, etc.
[00:21:20] PSU: any other suggestions?
[00:23:12] iamlindoro: PSU: is it a matter of the listings being wrong, or that when you press "4" on the remote, channel 2 comes up?
[00:23:32] PSU: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/ . . . 62?page=last
[00:23:45] PSU: looks like this is a known problem
[00:23:50] PSU: iamlindoro: sec let me test
[00:25:02] iamlindoro: If it's a listings issue, then try mythfilldatabase --refresh-all --do-channel-updates. If that doesn't work, then you can probably submit a ticket to SchedulesDirect so that they can send the info up to TMS. If it's a Channels being wrog problem, then I advise removing the listings source and recreating it from scratch in mythtv-setup
[00:25:03] PSU: iamlindoro: the channel comes up fine (i.e. i pressed 3 and nbc came up which is correct0
[00:25:17] iamlindoro: try the mythfilldatabase line I gave you above, then check again
[00:25:21] PSU: ok let me try that
[00:25:23] PSU: thanks bud!

[00:33:55] iamlindoro: Probably not at that spec-- frontend log will be the place to start... if that fails, the frontend with -v playback while playing the trouble video
[00:34:03] iamlindoro: most commonly it's a video driver issue
[00:34:14] jamesd: Gumby, are you using the commercial nvidia drivers?
[00:34:25] Gumby: Its mostly the audio that cuts out for 1/10th of a second and sometimes the video slows a bit
[00:34:28] Gumby: jamesd: yes I am

[01:37:12] wagnerrp: plus, DVD doesnt start as crap
[01:37:32] roz: how can I make transcode leave IN the commercials. By default it removes them
[01:37:35] clever: wagnerrp: mpeg2 1gig/hour has some mpeg blocks i can see
[01:38:03] clever: roz: by default it doesnt remove them, enless you changed something i dont know of, or you made a cutlist
[01:38:29] roz: clever: the cutlist is done automatically isn't it by the commercial flagging?
[01:38:51] clever: roz: the cutlist is seperate from the comm flagging
[01:39:03] clever: roz: in mythfrontend you can copy the flags INTO the cutlist, and fine tune it
[01:39:16] roz: Ok that makes sense
[01:39:36] clever: by default the cutlist is empty so nothing gets removed during transcoding
[01:39:48] roz: how can I find out the status of the transcoding ?
[01:39:51] roz: like percentage
[01:39:56] wagnerrp: clever: right now, i record somewhere better than 2GB/hr
[01:40:14] wagnerrp: i dont see mpeg artifacts unless im looking for them
[01:40:19] clever: wagnerrp: same thing, i doubled my bitrate since i can afford the space
[01:40:47] clever: wagnerrp: i cant see them anymore now that im 2gig/hour, but now the finer details like rf noise are visible:P
[01:41:01] roz: right now i am strapped for space (Olympics). I don't normally transcode from MPEG2 at all
[01:41:05] clever: roz: system status or the http page
[01:41:30] wagnerrp: but divx/xvid, at full D1, still has noticeable issues at the traditional 700MB/hr
[01:41:36] wagnerrp: err... 700MB/video
[01:41:39] clever: http://192.168.1.61:6544/
[01:41:48] wagnerrp: so, like 400MB/hr
[01:41:56] clever: that url(change to one of your backend ip's) will show all job progress
[01:43:01] roz: clever: I am in that screen in myth
[01:43:14] roz: I have an error, but i dont see an option to delete it
[01:43:28] clever: roz: theres another place within mythfrontend but the font sizes make it hard to see the whole line
[01:43:34] clever: roz: m will let you delete it
[01:44:30] roz: All i can do is requeue it

[01:45:14] roz: OK so the one I just set up is queue'd up behind a commercial flagging
[01:45:20] roz: anyway to make it run?
[01:45:31] roz: (i am running out of hd space, so sort of in a hurry)
[01:45:57] clever: the mythbackend will run 1 job at a time in order
[01:46:23] clever: ive sat on 2gig of space before for weeks

[01:48:05] clever: ah
[01:48:20] roz: I am comm flagging at 33 fps, so real time
[01:48:29] clever: got other systems running as frontends?
[01:48:34] roz: yes
[01:48:42] wagnerrp: yeah, ive got some 600GB dedicated towards recordings, and another 1.5TB i can add if needed
[01:48:44] clever: then you can do what i did
[01:48:55] clever: i made every frontend a slave backend
[01:49:06] wagnerrp: storage is cheap, transcoding takes too much effory
[01:49:08] clever: basicaly i just set the 'backend ip' properly in mythtv-setup and run mythbackend
[01:49:30] roz: each backend then can run 1 process?
[01:49:47] clever: each mythbackend will run x jobs(set in mythtv-setup)
[01:50:03] squish102 (squish102!n=squish10@cpe-098-024-067-184.carolina.res.rr.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[01:50:07] sphery: wagnerrp: I completely agree... 750GB for $85 means transcoding is a waste
[01:50:42] clever: roz: next, jobqueue(global) in mythtv-setup, 'run jobs only on original backend', turn it off
[01:50:58] clever: roz: now every computer(with a mythbackend) will run a job
[01:51:21] clever: its fun to transcode 7 things at once
[01:51:25] roz: sphery: I agree. I also cannot get one of those here fast enough
[01:51:32] sphery: roz: and you can run mythjobqueue instead of mythbackend if the system isn't really a backend (i.e. if it has no capture cards)
[01:52:12] clever: sphery: i heard of that but have never tested it myself
[01:52:32] sphery: roz: well, if you want: http://www.digitaleditor.com/eu.aspx?url=http . . . -1_8-18-2006 followed by http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ST3750640A-R&cat=HDD (PATA) or http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ST375 . . . &cat=HDD (SATA)
[01:53:14] sphery: clever: it's really better to use it if you don't have capture cards because mythbackend is not tested (nor written) to work without capture cards.
[01:53:41] sphery: Here's the obligatory (but mostly useless) wiki page: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Mythjobqueue
[01:53:50] clever: sphery: one of my false slaves was also holding about 20gig of overflow recordings
[01:53:58] sphery: just set up the system with mythtv-setup (as if it were a slave backend), then run mythjobqueue instead of mythbackend.
[01:54:10] clever: sphery: i gave it its own storage group and updated the hostname in recorded

[01:54:41] sphery: clever: yeah, but if you're using a network filesystem, you wouldn't need a backend there.
[01:55:14] sphery: roz: might still want to run mythtv-setup to make sure the job settings are appropriate (i.e. jobs are allowed, allowed to run jobs from other hosts, etc.)
[01:55:14] clever: sphery: ive also changed things arround more now
[01:55:23] sphery: cool
[01:55:29] roz: However....I only have mythfrontend installed. compiling (gentoo)
[01:55:42] clever: sphery: right now i switched a slave and master backend, simply by changing the master ip
[01:55:44] sphery: clever: at least what you had was working for you--that's really the most important.
[01:55:46] clever: sphery: and i moved the card also
[01:55:50] clever: sphery: but NOT the drives
[01:56:06] clever: so the master backend is now recording directly to nfs
[01:56:29] sphery: roz: how can you only have mythfrontend installed? frontend-only builds are not meant to exist.
[01:56:51] sphery: only way I've seen that is when packagers allow it (compile everything and only install part)--which they shouldn't ;)
[01:56:52] clever: sphery: and yet theres a --disable-mythbackend on configure
[01:56:57] roz: sphery: they do exist on gentoo
[01:57:11] ** chainsawbike seconds that **
[01:57:37] clever: in theory i could cut the backend out of a .deb while building it
[01:57:50] clever: if i knew how to build .deb packages:p
[01:57:54] sphery: clever: # disabled due to abuse in Gentoo ebuild --disable-backend)
[01:57:58] clever: lol
[01:58:04] sphery: for real, read configure
[01:58:22] clever: roz: you must have an old version then:P
[01:58:55] sphery: Also: WARNING: --disable-backend is only intended to aid porting./WARNING: You are on your own now.
[01:59:11] clever: disabling the backend would be usefull in porting
[01:59:30] clever: i could completely skip patching the capture together while i build a mythfrontend that can atleast start
[01:59:34] wagnerrp: yeah, 'frontendonly' and 'backendonly' are no longer options in the ebuilds
[01:59:38] sphery: You have to hack configure to make it work, and then--if you're compiling on GNU/Linux--you end up with a broken build
[02:03:31] roz: thanks a bunch guys
[02:03:34] roz: have to run for now
[02:03:54] sphery: good luck
[02:08:33] squish102: ok finaly making a concerted effort to build a decentish HTPC, got an antec ht case, and an amd X2 BE-2400 and a quite cpu cooler. Any1 have a good mobo that works with mythtv for that cpu?
[02:09:12] sphery: I can recommend one to not get (the one I just got that caused me to order another, which should arrive on Monday :)
[02:09:55] squish102: which one?
[02:10:14] sphery: Don't get Biostar A740G M2+.
[02:10:29] squish102: ok thanks, what did u buy now?
[02:10:45] sphery: looking

[02:12:12] abarber_: clever: so i got an S-video cable
[02:12:26] abarber_: but it has not fixed my problems
[02:12:43] abarber_: can't watch tv through myth
[02:12:54] sphery: The one I got isn't great, but it has a NIC that should work at full speed (the NIC on the Biostar gives me about 6MB/s throughput but drops out for up to a second at a time, which is not good for video/audio.)
[02:13:12] sphery: squish102: I got http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131234

[02:15:14] abarber_: yeah, i was gonna ask how to test the card
[02:15:20] abarber_: what is tvtime?
[02:15:56] sphery: squish102: Mainly it didn't use the r8169 NIC driver (which sucks) and didn't have intel-hda audio (which isn't done, yet)... Those are the 2 things that burned me on the Biostar.
[02:16:24] clever: iamlindoro: looks neat, but the vid isnt working yet
[02:16:25] sphery: squish102: Also, I think the Asus M3A-H/HDMI has a NIC that uses r8169.

[02:26:08] sphery: squish102: if you do want to use the onboard HDMI, you'll need to use the new ATI drivers. They should be in good shape, now. (Much better than in years past.) Unfortunately, there's not as much documentation out there on them, as on NVIDIA (especially with Myth), so you may have to play a bit.

[02:47:08] iamlindoro: PSU: The short short way of fixing it would be to remove the video source in mythtv-setup (that is, the listings source) and create it again from scratch. The bad news about that is it will wreak havok on your recording rules. The labor intensive way is to edit each channel and make the XMLids right per the "report" function at SD, which is labor intensive but your recording rules should come through unscathed

[02:49:11] sphery: Yeah, I /never/ do "this channel" rules, so it never affects me. But, you can always change the callsign back to what it was (assuming you knwo it)
[02:49:16] sphery: speaking of which...
[02:49:17] clever: J-e-f-f-A: i can see the ir led in a camera but its very dim
[02:49:21] iamlindoro: That's a very general statement-- what about it kept freezing? The GPU isn't really doing *any* of the work decoding in linux, that's really all done by the CPU
[02:49:33] sphery: PSU: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Database_Backup_and_Restore has info on saving xmltvid's
[02:49:44] J-e-f-f-A: clever: Do you have an IR receiver?
[02:49:46] clever: J-e-f-f-A: the cable box ignores it, and my 'univeral remote' software on my phone claims receive error
[02:49:57] PSU: sphery: thanks, guess this would be good for next time, right? :)
[02:50:05] clever: J-e-f-f-A: and the pvr150 receiver can only receive certain signals
[02:50:14] thedarkone: well iamlindoro i have 1gig ram pentuim d 2.8ghz and 2 tb hdd
[02:50:23] sphery: PSU: though the xmltvid stuff might be wrong, it also dumps some other channel info in a text file that you might find useful
[02:50:27] MartinCleaver (MartinCleaver!n=martincl@24.156.136.99) has quit ()
[02:50:33] PSU: k, thx
[02:51:04] iamlindoro: Should be more than adequate for US HDTV, thedarkone, but don't know where you live. Like I said, the GPU doesn't do any work in linux, since our hardware acceleration is next-to-nonexistent
[02:51:14] clever: J-e-f-f-A: using the remote software on my phone i can learn and playback ir signals from remotes thru the irda port
[02:51:23] clever: J-e-f-f-A: but the range for blasting from the phone is useless
[02:51:36] iamlindoro: so acceleration in a 5200 is going to be more or less the same as the latest, greatest, Crysis-crushing GPU
[02:51:45] iamlindoro: and in some cases, better.
[02:52:15] iamlindoro: Oooh, no lady in the house, I can play Bionic Commando
[02:52:18] thedarkone: i am usa
[02:52:27] sphery: IMHO, the only benefit of faster video cards in a Myth box is the faster memory that comes with them (and then, only helpful with certain--mainly OpenGL--operations)
[02:52:35] wagnerrp: wow, the entire country
[02:53:54] sphery: (Though that will change with the OpenGL video renders--which require /very/ new, /very/ fast video cards--but they aren't really usable, now, so you're better off buying a cheap video card and waiting for the code to be written, at which point the expensive, fast cards will drop in price.
[02:57:22] thedarkone: sphery do u use rbg part of ur graphic card
[02:57:52] sphery: thedarkone: I'm using VGA.
[02:58:07] sphery: which sends RGB, so, yeah, but not how you mean :)
[02:58:25] wagnerrp: DVI and VGA are both RGB signals
[02:58:34] wagnerrp: component is NOT an RGB signal
[02:59:08] thedarkone: well this one uses rgb
[02:59:18] thedarkone: it has red green blue
[02:59:28] sphery: but the ends of the cables have red, green, and blue on them
[02:59:39] wagnerrp: the connectors may be rgb, but it is a YPrPb signal
[03:00:18] thedarkone: anolog
[03:00:48] sphery: VGA is analog RGB. Component is analog YPrPb.
[03:00:56] sphery: DVI-A is analog RGB.
[03:01:54] wagnerrp: DVI-D is digital RGB, with some other shit thrown in for good measure
[03:02:26] sphery: More than anything, you might want to call component, component, so others can understand what you're asking (otherwise, you might get irrelevant answers)
[03:03:27] iamlindoro: Yay, my eBay auction ended, guess I can pay the mortgage this month
[03:04:00] thedarkone: this darn video card gona drive me to drink

[03:09:01] wagnerrp: im looking through display connectors on wikipedia

[05:02:48] iamlindoro: J-e-f-f-A: Dunno TBH, mine came w/ english menu
[05:04:15] ldiamond: wow, that should do it: http://www.tddirect.ca/products/32654/USBDVI4 . . . 0MANAGEMENT/
[05:04:36] thedarkone: well iamlindoro what refresh rate should i use with vga part
[05:04:41] thedarkone: 85
[05:04:49] ldiamond: check ur projector's spec
[05:05:02] ldiamond: get closer to the max
[05:05:03] iamlindoro: depends on your projector, use the link your were provided earlier to find modelines that won't blow it out
[05:05:03] J-e-f-f-A: thedarkone: to prevent tearing, use 60hz.
[05:05:40] thedarkone: oh
[05:05:45] thedarkone: i was using 87
[05:05:48] J-e-f-f-A: thedarkone: just my 2cents, but that's what the video rate is anyways, HD or SD...
[05:05:58] thedarkone: sg
[05:06:01] thedarkone: sd
[05:06:19] ldiamond: j-e-f-f-A wouldnt 60hz produce flickering with 60hz light..?
[05:06:19] iamlindoro: he meant, "regardless of whether SD or HD," it wasn't a question
[05:06:30] thedarkone: oh
[05:06:49] ldiamond: or whatever, might not be flickering
[05:06:51] J-e-f-f-A: ldiamond: no, the projector is probably producing the picture at 120hz anyways.
[05:07:14] ldiamond: but any source of ambiant light
[05:07:18] ldiamond: a lightbulb or anything
[05:07:30] ldiamond: unless its completely dark in there.
[05:07:39] J-e-f-f-A: ...but normal video is only 60 frames per second, so no need to go higher. On a CRT you'd probably notice flicker, but not on dlp, or LCD.
[05:08:02] ldiamond: indeed
[05:09:56] J-e-f-f-A: ldiamond: with DLP you're more likey to see the rainbow effect than any type of flickering... because it's flashing a Red picture, then a Blue Picture, then a Green picture, and sometimes a White picture, all in either 1/60 sec or 1/120 sec (ddr projectors)
[05:10:19] J-e-f-f-A: ldiamond: My vision is sensitve enought that I see the rainbows even on the DDR projectors...
[05:13:12] RyeBrye: there is still no multirec support for the hdhomerun, right?
[05:14:09] J-e-f-f-A: RyeBrye: I'm not sure... but I'm enjoying mine... ;-) Freed up 2 PCI slots with it... (removed HD-3000 and HD-5500)
[05:16:21] RyeBrye: Maybe I'll just get 2 of them :)
[05:23:30] J-e-f-f-A: RyeBrye: I got mine at Micro Center this week for $159 – somebody said they were on newegg for like $140 with free shipping – I didn't validate that though...
[05:24:29] J-e-f-f-A: humm. current check shows the price at $168.99, so I think I did ok... ;-)

[08:44:03] justinh: let me guess... you have a bunch of channels in there missing the xmltvid and a bunch of channels with xmltvid but missing numbers
[08:44:53] schmick_: nope.. just a bunch of channels with no xmltvID..
[08:45:28] schmick_: strange ehh.. I expected an output as you state.
[08:46:58] justinh: wow. we've only gone up to blimmin third! :-O
[08:47:15] schmick_: I'll start again and I'll see if I can get to that scenario.
[08:47:37] justinh: schmick_: if all the channels are only missing xmltvids, you don't need to start again

[10:36:15] Saviq: _fjh_: rescan
[10:36:59] _fjh_: Saviq, I already did that. But it did not change anything.
[10:37:14] _fjh_: Are there options I need to specify?
[10:38:30] Saviq: if they moved frequencies, you'd have to do a full scan
[10:38:31] _fjh_: I cannot remember when I did it the first time, but I think I needed to seed it with some start values somehow? Maybe this mis missing now?
[10:39:03] Saviq: or scan wanted multiplexes one-by-on
[10:39:04] Saviq: e
[10:40:24] Saviq: I don't recommend doing full scans, 'cause that will get you with some 3k channels or so

[14:20:12] justinh: what else would over the AIR mean?
[14:20:42] SirFunk: idk, that's what i thogut but something else lead me to believe it meant free stuff over cable, which was confusing :-P
[14:21:32] SirFunk: for paid-for digital cable do you need some kind of reciever box? or is paid for on the account and all jacks in the house get it?
[14:22:00] clever: all the jacks are normaly just ran off a dumb spliter, so theres no way to tell which house your signal is going to/from
[14:22:01] justinh: well, generally if you get anything for free over cable, it amounts to whatever you'd get with an antenna anyway
[14:22:37] SirFunk: clever: so you need a cable box for digital?
[14:22:53] justinh: SirFunk: generally yes
[14:22:55] clever: SirFunk: or a proper digital card and decoder card
[14:23:15] justinh: and there are no decoder cards for US cable which'd work on linux

[14:24:20] andreax: Im on the search for a simple dvb-t dual tunercard for pice that runs with linux – this is hard enough... :(
[14:25:28] SirFunk: man.. it looks like newegg doesn't carry any hauppauge ntsc only cards anymore
[14:26:17] clever: it seems i have QAM on my line
[14:26:19] justinh: pci-e cards – there's one or two which'd work in linux AFAIK

[14:28:01] justinh: what?!
[14:28:13] Spida: andreax: athlon3k to slow?
[14:28:16] andreax: Yeah. This site looks a lil smaller than the on for just pci....
[14:28:23] justinh: my athlon 800Mhz with 512MB ram could serve 2 other frontends at the same time as playing livetv !!!!!!!!!!!!
[14:28:36] mzb_d800: andreax: dvico dual digital 4 (rev 1) is a popular one
[14:28:38] justinh: it worked just fine
[14:28:55] Spida: andreax: are you getting HD-content? which resolution?
[14:29:02] justinh: HD has nothing to do with it
[14:29:16] andreax: Yeah, it seems. In some circumstances the remote frontend stops sometimes the playback – I don't know exactly where's the bottleneck...
[14:29:24] justinh: even HD is a max of 18Mbits/sec
[14:29:35] justinh: if something is slow it's more likely to be the video subsystem
[14:29:56] justinh: i.e. not having working Xv in X
[14:29:57] mzb_d800: it's more drive speed and (possibly) PCI bus bandwidth, imo ... depends how the machine's built
[14:30:20] Spida: justinh: compressed, yes. but you should have some decompression-power to actually SEE the content....
[14:30:28] justinh: drive speed & bus speed shouldn't begin to have any bearing on a system dealing with 2 HD streams
[14:30:44] andreax: got 3 dvb-t tuners in it (2 aver 771 cards) and one dvb-t stick msi digivox... locally all is fine... But im still not sure which pc I've to blame...
[14:30:50] ajh: What distribution?
[14:30:53] mzb_d800: does on a slow drive .. or a system with a slow IDE interface
[14:31:00] justinh: mzb_d800: unlikely
[14:31:01] andreax: gentoo on all....
[14:31:15] ajh: I had issues with bad kernel drivers for dvb-s cards sucking up all the interrupts
[14:31:16] mzb_d800: funny ... that's what the evidence showed me

[14:31:49] andreax: Maybe I've just to blame the other frontend... im not sure at the moment, I've no idea how to troubleshoot this
[14:31:51] ajh: justinh, did you factor in fragmentation and non-sequential reads/writes?
[14:32:05] justinh: ajh: doesn't really become an issue IME
[14:32:16] ajh: andreax, try grabbing and building a stock kernel.
[14:32:18] mzb_d800: does on a slow drive!
[14:32:20] justinh: 30–40Mbits/sec is bugger all
[14:32:30] ajh: My load went from 100% to 6%.
[14:32:36] justinh: if you can't haul that out of it, there's something seriously wrong somewhere
[14:33:01] ajh: Yeah, there are plenty of places where you can generate excessive loads without being able to see them easily.
[14:33:20] ajh: Sadly it requires some real knowledge to find most of them.
[14:33:29] clever: justinh: i get 30–40 on avg with my current drive setup
[14:33:30] justinh: the system I literally threw together was recording 10 streams at the same time last time I had it powered up
[14:33:35] clever: way better then the 10mb/sec i was getting
[14:33:36] ahave: justinh: i didnt know mythdvd was a channel
[14:33:39] andreax: ajh: Tried already on both... Maybe this old (leftover) nividia 2 card is the issue – no idea...
[14:34:03] justinh: had plenty of headroom too
[14:34:10] ajh: OK, did you run iostat to see if anything excessive was happening?
[14:34:25] ajh: Yeah, once i fixed mine I had it running 18.
[14:34:47] ajh: Had other not so easy to fix issues but those were not myth related.
[14:35:12] mzb_d800: ahave: I think sarcasm might have been employed ;)

[14:35:38] lupin_sansei: Hello, other than the videos I want should any other files by in my myth's video folder?
[14:35:55] mzb_d800: preview images

[14:42:54] roz_: another comp
[14:43:00] ajh: Eventually I'd like to go to pre-scaled to native resolution, de-interlaced, and in whatever format uses the least cpu to decode.
[14:43:05] clever: ah
[14:43:05] clever: been there, done that
[14:43:16] clever: i pushed 20gig of files into an unstable laptop hdd to make room

[14:43:45] roz_: clever, and the DB will stay sane?
[14:44:14] clever: roz_: i also ran a slave backend on there(was allready running it) and i updated the db to know about that new location
[14:44:17] ajh: roz, you could also just copy them to mythvideo and delete them.
[14:44:31] clever: so it continued to play like normal for me

[14:55:29] notjoe: clever: that is exactly my problem

[14:56:54] notjoe: if i symlink the .mpg file back to the mp4

[14:57:23] mzb_d800: that's a bit odd ... I've just done a rebuild to latest .21-fixes ... and now I'm getting weird flickering+jerking on playback ... eventually degrading to NVP prebuffering pauses ... *sigh*

[15:32:52] petre: I'm assuming something has to be entered into the database for it to appear in the list

[17:24:36] iamlindoro: You *could*... but you'd need to set up a manual recording rule for everything you planned to keep, and be there to change the channel, and the remote w/ the STB will be a bitch to use as it'll be multiple seconds behind... so if you mis-key, it'll be several second before you see the result. Very obnoxious. Better just to buy an IR blaster for $11 and set it up properly
[17:25:34] weevilofdoom: ok, makes sense – just wasn't seeing an exact explanation as to why IR blaster was actually needed

[17:27:19] iamlindoro: especially with comcast-- very standardized
[17:27:29] iamlindoro: I'll guess, since you say it's crappy, that you have a DCT 700
[17:27:39] iamlindoro: and I'll probably be right ;)

[17:28:52] weevilofdoom: from my experience and what i've read, they have pretty crappy IR receivers
[17:29:05] weevilofdoom: so i'll have to get that IR blaster pretty precise
[17:29:13] iamlindoro: Given the IR blaster is literally stuck on the IR eye, it's not going to be a problem :)
[17:29:24] iamlindoro: and that's speaking from having IR blasted one before
[17:29:31] weevilofdoom: fair enough!
[17:29:54] dustybin: i installed mythbuntu onto a future frontend box, 2 problems, 1) it wouldnt play FLAC files, 2) the OSD fonts look totally wrong
[17:30:18] weevilofdoom: so general procedure STB->Tuner Card, IR Blaster -> IR Reciever, Setup script for myth to use IR Blaster to change channel, but have tuner always on channel 3?
[17:30:52] iamlindoro: weevilofdoom: Last step only necessary if you're using the RF coaxial out on the STB-- I would advise S-video or Composite if possible

[17:32:04] weevilofdoom: only have a WinTV framegrabber for the time being
[17:32:13] iamlindoro: RF is really truly awful-- use *anything* but it if you can
[17:32:15] weevilofdoom: (coax and s-video in)

[17:32:40] weevilofdoom: dustybin, got all the correct codecs? OSD Fonts i am not sure of
[17:33:14] iamlindoro: dustybin: #ubuntu-mythtv would be wiser to see what they compile support in for, although that should be there, and the OSD fonts are easily changeable from the menus

[19:08:51] Dagmar: What kinda media are you recieving?
[19:08:59] Dagmar: NTSC, ATSC, DVB?
[19:09:06] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, telivions ntsc us-cable

[19:09:16] Dagmar: You don't need to scan for channels.
[19:09:27] Dagmar: So, there's one simplified thing.
[19:09:42] Dagmar: It's way, way, easier to tell it to just pull the list of channels from your listings provider.
[19:09:56] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, I think I tried that but had a problem, one sec
[19:10:07] Dagmar: Everything else will be huge problems by comparison
[19:10:51] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, fetch channels from listings source?
[19:10:55] Dagmar: Yep
[19:11:02] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, yeah when i do that it does nothing
[19:11:13] Dagmar: You put the username and password in for SD, right?
[19:11:51] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, no where at?
[19:11:54] Dagmar: Like, it should change part of that screen to show the name of your cable provider and it's provider number
[19:11:57] Dagmar: Ah... In mythtv-setup
[19:12:05] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, which section/ Im looking for it
[19:12:12] Dagmar: One of the first three?
[19:12:14] Dagmar: I dunno which one
[19:12:19] Dagmar: They're pretty obvious
[19:12:32] Dagmar: Basically, what you do in mythtv-setup is very simple.
[19:12:45] Dagmar: You will 1) tell it about your tuner cards
[19:12:56] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, yar, I think that i configured most things correctory
[19:12:56] Dagmar: Then 2) tell it about a listings source (which is going to be SD for us)
[19:13:10] Dagmar: Then 3) link the listings source to the tuners

[19:13:41] Dagmar: Somewhere during hte 2) bit on the same screen it has boxes for the login and password, is another button to click on to make it go poll immediately
[19:13:48] Dagmar: Then it'll change that bit to show your cable provider
[19:13:56] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, should i set it to north american Schedulesdirect.rog
[19:14:02] Dagmar: Yep
[19:14:13] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, does myth tv have a user name and pass? or do i ahve to apy for it?
[19:14:22] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, I went to their site and saw that it was a subscription
[19:14:33] Dagmar: You have to pay for a yearly subscription, but $20 is nothing compared to the hassle this is without it...
[19:14:44] Dagmar: ...and if nothing else the 7-day free demo lets you get the channel lineup
[19:15:14] Dagmar: So there is just about zero reason to even putz around with trying to scan for NTSC us-cable channels

[19:27:18] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, it actually does that on exit
[19:27:43] Dagmar: After that there's a screen you'll find in the frontend setup menus that lets you tell it to make the backend run mythfilldatabase on it's own each day from then on
[19:27:50] iamlindoro: only if by it you mean "some script put in my your distro, probably mythbuntu," and not mythtv-setup itself

[19:29:12] iamlindoro: Dagmar: True, but messes up all sorts of troubleshooting in other cases

[19:36:39] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, right, but it doesnt work

[19:41:30] Dagmar: Like, when you go to the next screen that has all the "/dev/video0 -> Tuner 1" stuff, you should be able to select "Comcast Cable" (or whatever it was) from the dropdowns
[19:41:53] Dagmar: If it's not, then you mii-i-i-i-ight wanna ask what _else_ they've been messing with in #MythBuntu

[19:42:35] Dagmar: The "Input Connections" page is the one where you *should* be able to associate the Tuner inputs with the cable company
[19:43:53] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, under capture cards there is no option for cable
[19:44:23] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, and the only option under video source is EIT
[19:44:27] Dagmar: So... go back to the screen where you put in your SD.org l/p. It should still show your cable provider's name there
[19:44:33] Dagmar: If it doesn't, you have a problem
[19:45:10] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, heh in that screen all it has is user name, pass data direct lineup, perform eit scan, channel frequancy table
[19:45:47] Dagmar: On that screen it should have something that changed after you entered the l/p
[19:45:49] ajhtiredwolf: The channel frenquancy tabel is already set to Us-cable, is that is what you meant
[19:45:49] iamlindoro: Data Direct Lineup, once you have fetched them from SD, will *be* your cable co's name
[19:46:03] iamlindoro: or close to it
[19:46:10] ajhtiredwolf: iamlindoro, i see, no it doesnt list it
[19:46:11] Dagmar: I'll make this simple
[19:46:19] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, it is already simgle
[19:46:21] Dagmar: Either it will be showing there, or your binary is broken.
[19:46:23] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, but it isnt there
[19:46:24] iamlindoro: Then you didn't set up your lineup properly at SchedulesDirect
[19:46:42] Dagmar: You DO have to login to SD.org and tell it who your cable provider is
[19:46:44] iamlindoro: You need more than a login and password there, you needto GO to schedulesdirect.org and setup the right lineup for your area, duh
[19:46:46] Dagmar: It's not psychic
[19:46:57] Dagmar: If you skipped that step, that could explain why things are failing
[19:47:07] iamlindoro: problem solved, another happy customer!
[19:47:11] iamlindoro: Next!
[19:47:16] Dagmar: Several things should have told you already to set that up in SD.org, which is why we assume you've already done it
[19:47:26] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, perhaps my firewall is keeping it from connecting?
[19:47:31] Dagmar: It's just a wget pull.
[19:47:35] iamlindoro: ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH
[19:47:41] Dagmar: If you can browse the web from that machine, no firewalling is going to break it
[19:47:47] iamlindoro: ajhtiredwolf: Did you GO to SD and set up a lineup on the web site???
[19:47:55] ajhtiredwolf: iamlindoro, I did
[19:48:20] ajhtiredwolf: iamlindoro, should i have not done digital cable?
[19:48:20] Dagmar: So a _working_ network connection is required for that bit yeah
[19:48:27] Dagmar: hahha
[19:48:33] Dagmar: Are you ON digital cable?
[19:48:42] Dagmar: Do you have a set-top box you're using?
[19:48:42] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, I am, however this isnt hooked up to the digital box
[19:48:46] iamlindoro: You should have set up whatever your cable source is, it's not rocket science
[19:48:56] Dagmar: Okay, so then you're not using digital cable with respect to SD.org
[19:49:30] ajhtiredwolf: iamlindoro, the first time you set something up, it doesnt seem as easy as it does after you've set it up
[19:49:50] Dagmar: Later, once you've got the basics sorted out, you can make this more complex and try to get an IR blaster or firewire connection goign to the STB so you can use it (maybe) but if you're just plugging the coax into the back of your PVR-150/PVR-500 card, you're just using analog cable
[19:50:05] Dagmar: ajh: But in *this* case, it's all ridiculously simple
[19:50:14] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, it should be
[19:50:16] Dagmar: You literally just have to go through each screen one at a time
[19:50:19] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, but it isnt working
[19:50:23] Dagmar: I've done it about a dozen times myself
[19:50:35] Dagmar: I used to blow away my entire install every week and redo it
[19:50:38] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, yep and i followed a guide to the letter
[19:50:42] Dagmar: "a guide"
[19:51:00] Dagmar: That really doesn't promise us much. We've no idea what might have been in that guide
[19:51:02] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, I dont see any settings that i have put in incorrectly
[19:51:25] ajhtiredwolf: i've added the lineup, proper user name and pass
[19:51:33] ajhtiredwolf: clicked the button retrieve lineup
[19:51:34] Dagmar: Really, for mythtv-setup, as long as you do what I've been saying--going through each entry one by one until you hit the bottom of the main menu screen--it should all be common sense just about
[19:51:55] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, ok dagmar, your not listening to me, i HAVE done that. ive done what you said to do
[19:51:58] Dagmar: OKay, and this "clicked the button retrieve lineup" button is on the same screen as the l/p, right?
[19:51:58] ajhtiredwolf: however, it is NOT working
[19:52:05] ajhtiredwolf: yes it is
[19:52:06] Dagmar: ajh: And you're not listening to ME.
[19:52:13] Dagmar: I'm telling you this very plainly
[19:52:26] Dagmar: Either what we're telling you will work, or something is wrong with your mythbuntu binaries

[19:52:48] Dagmar: Since it's apparently _not_ working, you should ask in #MythBuntu what they have done to make this more complex than necessary
[19:53:01] ajhtiredwolf: user name and password are correct
[19:53:05] Dagmar: The moment you enter your l/p and push the button on the screen with the SD.org info, part of that screen should CHANGE
[19:53:10] iamlindoro: this is a great time where *real* binaries would be nice, since if you run mythtv-setup form a terminal in mythbuntu, it just looks at you funny
[19:53:22] iamlindoro: so you have to run mythtv-setup.real
[19:53:25] Dagmar: The part that changes should show the name of your cable provider as you set it up for analog cable (NOT DIGITAL CABLE) with SD.org
[19:53:28] iamlindoro: and then the world of console output is open to you
[19:53:38] ajhtiredwolf: iamlindoro, i ran mythtv-setup in the terminal and it loaded the screen i am at now
[19:53:41] ajhtiredwolf: I dont see any problems
[19:53:42] Dagmar: If SD.org is still set up for digital cable and not analog cable, this is why you are failing.
[19:53:47] ajhtiredwolf: I did not install mythbuntu
[19:53:55] Dagmar: Then what the hell did you install
[19:54:08] sid3windr: fail!

[19:56:03] iamlindoro: and then if it fails to retrieve lineups, there should be lots of nice console output if they don't come when you click the button
[19:56:22] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, I am not seeing that option, hang on

[19:59:40] Dagmar: So add one
[19:59:42] ajhtiredwolf: the only options within that lineup, are to restrict channels
[20:00:13] Dagmar: Create a new lineup for analog cable and then drop the old one out
[20:00:45] Dagmar: Damn my PDA is at the office still. *sigh*
[20:00:51] ajhtiredwolf: that was what i was asking, but yes that is what i already have
[20:01:30] ajhtiredwolf: their is type, cable, and cabledigital, i chose cable
[20:03:57] Dagmar: Okay, so IF it's setup right, when you go back into MythTV setup for the page where your SD.org l/p goes in, and re-click the "get the infoz" button, you should see the cable provider's name on the screen
[20:03:58] Dagmar: DO YOU?
[20:04:12] ajhtiredwolf: nope
[20:04:23] ajhtiredwolf: Nothing has changed, that is what i had before
[20:04:33] Dagmar: Did you click the button again?
[20:04:35] ajhtiredwolf: yep
[20:04:38] iamlindoro: and there is stilllllllllll console output that has plain english info on what's wrong
[20:04:48] Dagmar: Does say, `lynx http://www.google.com` work?
[20:06:07] ajhtiredwolf: ive already searched on the internet to try and find a solution, i wasnt abel to, thats why i came here, but i'll be very happy try somewhere else if you want me to
[20:06:10] borga2 (borga2!n=IceChat7@c-9591e155.1052-1-64736c10.cust.bredbandsbolaget.se) has quit ("REALITY.SYS Corrupted: Re-boot universe? (Y/N/Q)")
[20:06:21] Dagmar: Does say, `lynx http://www.google.com` work?
[20:06:39] Dagmar: 'cuz the only thing that should be reasonable able to go wrong at this point is if the box has no functional network connection
[20:07:02] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, im talking to you, the network is functioning
[20:07:05] Dagmar: You should enter your SD.org l/p and click the button on that screen, and part of that screen should change to show the name of your cable provider.
[20:07:10] iamlindoro: and you could, and I'll only say this one more FUCKING TIME, look at the CONSOLE OUTPUT of mythtv-setup, which will tell you WHY retrieve lineups fails if it does
[20:07:31] Dagmar: If the name of your cable lineup is not appearing on that screen you have a problem
[20:07:35] ajhtiredwolf: iamlindoro, no it doesnt, it display <up> over and over again
[20:08:05] iamlindoro: ajhtiredwolf: Then guess what? Like I've told you three other times before, you are running a SCRIPT that spawns mythtv-setup
[20:08:19] iamlindoro: which ubuntu has helpfully named the same god damn thing
[20:08:38] iamlindoro: I'll give you a hint, real mythtv-setup is mythtv-setup.real
[20:08:44] Dagmar: This is why we tend to get irritable with package maintainers that make things "too" automatic
[20:08:52] ajhtiredwolf: iamlindoro, calm yourself doen
[20:08:54] ajhtiredwolf: down*
[20:08:57] Dagmar: It blows away what would otherwise be useful debug output that they didn't account for properly.
[20:09:15] Dagmar: Yeah well pardon our frustration when this is something that realistically can be done in under five minutes.
[20:09:16] iamlindoro: ajhtiredwolf: Listen to things the first time and don't act like we owe you anything. I'm tired of telling you everything three times and having you argue the first two
[20:09:30] ajhtiredwolf: iamlindoro, id prefer if you didnt tell me anything, i was asking dagmar
[20:09:43] iamlindoro: Superb, best of luck with it, and remember to fuck yourself on the way out the door
[20:09:46] Dagmar: Like, _the entire_ setup of mythtv can be done in under five minutes, so long as a) nothing is broken and b) the correct information is entered
[20:09:59] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, im frusterated too, sometimes things don't work perfectly across all platforms though
[20:10:09] Dagmar: This is Linux.
[20:10:58] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, yep, but its relaly only frusterating when you are asking questions and the support is being incredibly rude, otherwise I expect to have to do extra configuring and dont mind it :-\
[20:11:21] Dagmar: Yeah well, iamlindoro is only marginally less patient than me
[20:11:27] iamlindoro: We'll be sure to refund this month's support payment, then. I'll get my manager on the line right away
[20:11:28] dustybin: its all about the microkernels and minix :P
[20:11:34] Dagmar: I know you're confused and tired, but you gotta focus
[20:12:00] Dagmar: When we say something like "You put in the blah on the blah screen and blah happens" if ANY of it seems out of place at all, it is not the time to nod and smile
[20:12:13] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, im not a linux pro, im still just learning, its important not to bash the newbies, or its hard for us to be attracted to the operating system
[20:12:23] Dagmar: Don't lecture me about not bashing the newbies
[20:12:27] Dagmar: I do that with a chainsaw
[20:12:37] Dagmar: Problem. Focus.
[20:12:40] Dagmar: You can has both.
[20:12:50] dustybin: ajhtiredwolf: there are far too many newbies already thanks to *buntu
[20:13:22] ajhtiredwolf: dustybin, your right, it woudl be better if no one knew was attracted to linux and the distros died * rolls eyes*
[20:13:43] dustybin: ajhtiredwolf: some of us started off with a bare kernel and the vi editor, everything done manually
[20:13:56] wagnerrp: the problem is that such 'newbie-friendly' distros tend to hide how things function from the user, so when the user does need help, no one knows how to talk them through their issue
[20:14:00] ajhtiredwolf: dustybin, and mac started out as a kit that you had to put together yourself
[20:14:30] Dagmar: I started before we had X.
[20:14:50] Dagmar: Ah the days of compiling a 400K kernel binary on a 33Mhz CPU.
[20:14:53] dustybin: ajhtiredwolf: i started way back in 1985 using unixv6
[20:14:55] ajhtiredwolf: wagnerrp, thats true, but ease of use attracts a larger range of people
[20:15:01] Dagmar: Starting the build, going to sleep, waking up to see if you had a new kernel or not...
[20:15:28] wagnerrp: Dagmar: except that X started before linux was a sparkle in torvald's eye
[20:15:46] Dagmar: ajhtiredwolf: If you want to see what we mean by Ubuntu attracting "too many newbies" google up "endless september" sometime
[20:15:55] Dagmar: wagnerrp: We didn't have it
[20:16:37] dustybin: ive gone off the idea of hav
[20:16:45] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, ubuntu is useful for more than just enthusiasts, you are looking at it from a perspective that the only people that should be able to use it are those who have the time to put in as much tinkering as you do :p
[20:16:52] Dagmar: No, I'm not.
[20:17:02] Dagmar: I'm looking at it from a very practical standpoint of clue reuptake.
[20:17:06] dustybin: having 3 boxes just to use pfsense, adsl modem + pfsense + switch, when you can buy a box with all those bits built in and use dd-wrt instead
[20:17:35] dustybin: ubuntu is nothing more than a unstable desktop
[20:17:36] Dagmar: dustybin: ...and then you get it and find out what a bite in the ass it is to make a new dd-wrt image
[20:17:58] dustybin: Dagmar: hmm
[20:18:03] ajhtiredwolf: dustybin, its worked fine for me until myth to be honest
[20:18:11] liri: hey guys
[20:18:15] Dagmar: dustybin: I have some dd-wrt things here. I'm still using a NetVista X41 I bought for $75 off Craigslist as my new firewall replacement
[20:18:32] Dagmar: ajh: Seriously tho, later google "endless september"
[20:19:46] dustybin: Dagmar: the x41 has pc + monitor built in? what firewall software you going to run on it
[20:19:58] Dagmar: Too many newbies at once is like pouring too much acid into an otherwise stable buffered mixture.
[20:20:05] Dagmar: dustybin: Slackware
[20:20:08] dustybin: ok
[20:20:34] ajhtiredwolf: Dagmar, ahh there we go, a terminal window
[20:20:44] dustybin: Dagmar: have you got 2 NICs on the X41?
[20:20:47] Dagmar: It's actually been pretty nice hardware to work with. I even got lucky in that Best Buy's cheapest NIC is this Dynex thing which comes with the half-height bracket needed to install the card
[20:20:56] Dagmar: It's got one onboard, and now two in the PCI slots
[20:21:01] dustybin: nice

[20:23:14] dustybin: Dagmar: do you really need a screen for a firewall?
[20:23:19] Dagmar: dustybin: Nope.
[20:23:24] dustybin: how many watts does that box use
[20:23:27] Dagmar: ...but I've just about finished the MRTG bits
[20:23:38] Dagmar: Not many.
[20:23:42] dustybin: ok
[20:23:43] GreyFoxx: Dag: There is a similar concept around IRC. some influx of users in September, but by the end of the 90's it was Xmas when people were getting computers for xmas + the net
[20:23:57] GreyFoxx: that first month after xmas sucked on IRC
[20:24:05] GreyFoxx: every year was the same
[20:24:16] Dagmar: Hopefully I can find some DPMS invocation that will just turn off the screen's backlight unless there's something I need to display (like Red Alert — UPS offline, Network Offline, etc)
[20:24:19] GreyFoxx: but now it's such a steady constant flow you can't notice the difference :)
[20:24:24] wagnerrp: dustybin: sure, you can run ddwrt. but theres not a lot of fun you can have with 4MB of RAM and 8MB of flash
[20:24:29] Dagmar: Greyfoxx: Have you seen the slackware logo?
[20:24:58] Dagmar: wagnerrp: Well, some people's idea of "fun" is a bit different. Like, some people enjoy sudoku.
[20:25:14] GreyFoxx: A new logo ?
[20:25:19] Dagmar: Yeah. Go to slackware.com.

[20:25:31] nludlam: If I make changes to the 'record' table, is there a command I need to send the backend to reschedule the matches on the EPG data?
[20:25:33] Dagmar: I still dont' know what to think of it
[20:25:35] GreyFoxx: doh
[20:25:54] GreyFoxx: that is kinda ...odd..
[20:25:59] Dagmar: Yeah.
[20:26:00] dustybin: wagnerrp: i like the idea of trying to use as less equipment as possible but utlizing the equipment i have to its full potential
[20:26:11] GreyFoxx: Makes me wonder what font it is :)
[20:26:26] iamlindoro: Well, guess it can never be upside down
[20:26:28] iamlindoro: that's good

[20:26:36] Dagmar: The main reason I'm using the X41 now is that my older firewall was such a piece of "unlovely miscellaneous parts" it was driving me batty
[20:26:44] GreyFoxx: iam: yeah
[20:26:46] GreyFoxx: hehe
[20:26:59] dustybin: lol
[20:27:01] Dagmar: Like, the backplate where the connectors all go is just a piece of aluminum with a hole drilled through it for the keyboard port.
[20:27:13] Dagmar: ...and the power supply I put in it was an AT power supply.
[20:27:36] Dagmar: The case is not an AT case, so there's an actual _light switch_ screwed onto the chassis inside the case.
[20:27:37] dustybin: i was thinking about installing dd-wrt on a Linksys WRT54GL, instead of a 3 box setup just to use pfsense
[20:27:50] iamlindoro: dustybin: NOW you're thinking
[20:27:56] iamlindoro: go with that
[20:28:00] dustybin: aye

[20:28:24] dustybin: i really wanted to have pfsense working as my firewall :-(
[20:28:32] Dagmar: I will possibly just take the old firewall with me to phreaknic and give it away to some poor underfunded hacker
[20:28:46] iamlindoro: Speaking of consolidation, I should take pictures of the new setup
[20:29:02] Dagmar: It's been running non-stop for about five years now
[20:29:12] dustybin: jeeze
[20:29:12] Dagmar: ...so, I guess it can be said the hardware is stable
[20:29:30] ** dustybin reads Linksys WRT54GL reviews **

[20:30:27] GreyFoxx: and a wifi bridge on a switch so the machinesx were actually online while moving
[20:30:37] dustybin: when a box is there to try and keep a really good uptime, are they called 'idiot boxes'?

[21:19:16] clever: dustybin: i havent tested mine but its horidly hacked up

[21:28:35] justinh: clever: yeah but compared to what I first imagined when you said "massive" was a rack of car batteries
[21:28:59] clever: theres another 15 of those in the next room that im not using
[21:29:27] clever: i could probly get enough current to crank SEVERAL cars at once if i wired them up right

[21:36:04] justinh: jblack: darwin candidates R us
[21:36:08] wagnerrp: series adds voltage, parallel add current
[21:36:23] clever: wagnerrp: and they are all wires in parallel

[21:37:56] wagnerrp: PatrickDK: you better slap some stickers on it too
[21:38:27] PatrickDK: warning, idiot inside?
[21:39:18] jblack: clever: Just undersatnd. It varies by the type of battery, but if you charge it too fast or too much, or discharge it too fast, some types can explode, due to contaminants in the battery shorting out.
[21:39:19] wagnerrp: didnt you know? each sticker adds 15W
[21:39:26] clever: http://pzweb.harvard.edu/ucp/images/circuits_ . . . atteries.jpg
[21:39:36] clever: see the 2 wires on the left, they have 1 batery worth of current
[21:39:40] PatrickDK: heh, 15w isn't going get me anywhere
[21:39:45] PatrickDK: I'm starting at 3000watts
[21:39:47] clever: the 2 wires on the right are carring 2 baterys worth of current
[21:39:53] wagnerrp: thats why you use LOTS of stickers
[21:40:18] clever: and how exactly are stickers going to help:P
[21:40:19] PatrickDK: I guess those cellphone antenna booster stickers would work even better? :)
[21:40:33] jblack: clever: Oh, also some nonsealed batteries outgas sulphuric acid. :)

[21:40:47] wagnerrp: they let you gain free power from the ether
[21:40:47] clever: jblack: its in the furnace room

[21:40:59] jblack: OMg. Are you serious?
[21:41:02] clever: jblack: which is sucking air into the furnace every now and then
[21:41:12] PatrickDK: heh? why do you want to run that gas into your furnace?
[21:41:23] clever: im not trying to run it into there
[21:41:25] PatrickDK: it will help the furnace burn better though
[21:41:34] jblack: I hear what's outgassed is explosive. That may not be the best place to generate explosive gas.
[21:41:38] clever: but im saying that if any gas's get released they will get sucked up and blown into the furnace
[21:41:56] PatrickDK: it's hydrogen, extreemly flamable
[21:41:57] jblack: You're so gonna die.
[21:42:02] clever: the furnace burns oil, so it could just make it run better:P
[21:42:05] PatrickDK: na, it's lighter than air
[21:42:21] clever: the intake is near the ground so it wont get much of the lighter then air stuff
[21:42:22] PatrickDK: well, lighter than o2
[21:42:30] justinh: but on the plus side, oxygen in the air makes it burn better
[21:42:38] clever: PatrickDK: yes thats why hydrogen baloons float
[21:43:00] clever: jblack: they are sealed so they cant releases any gas
[21:43:01] PatrickDK: dunno, haven't seen any hydrogen balloons

[21:43:49] clever: just one of the bigger ones
[21:43:59] justinh: there's been a resurgence in H balloonery I think. I read that somewhere
[21:44:01] wagnerrp: the hindenburn burned because the skin was effectively rocket fuel
[21:44:18] clever: wagnerrp: ive seen that tested on tv
[21:44:30] wagnerrp: hydrogen by itself is not flammable until you get it to relatively low concentrations in air
[21:44:32] PatrickDK: and we always believe what we see on tv
[21:44:44] wagnerrp: clever: sure, the hydrogen played a part
[21:44:50] clever: wagnerrp: yeah, like pure propane it wont burn on its own
[21:44:50] clever: it needs oxygen

[21:45:24] PatrickDK: I know
[21:45:24] wagnerrp: but it hardly would have gone up at all if not for the aluminum power in the skin
[21:45:34] wagnerrp: aluminum dust is very explosive
[21:45:38] clever: yeah
[21:45:49] clever: i keep forgeting what its called:P
[21:45:57] clever: aluminum dust and iron rust mixed together
[21:45:58] wagnerrp: rocket fuel
[21:46:05] clever: theres another name for it
[21:46:10] PatrickDK: hardly rocket fuel
[21:46:11] wagnerrp: its what they stuff into solid rockets
[21:46:12] PatrickDK: thermite
[21:46:17] clever: PatrickDK: yeah thats it
[21:46:17] justinh: and mythbusters are the world authority on 100% facts eh?
[21:46:33] clever: justinh: i never said that:P
[21:46:38] PatrickDK: thermite has issues, it won't lite under 2000f
[21:47:11] clever: PatrickDK: so you need to chain it off a 2nd item like a strip of burning magnesium metal or some chemcical mix
[21:47:21] PatrickDK: yep
[21:47:25] clever: which lights at a lower temp and burns at a hoter one
[21:47:25] PatrickDK: I use magnesium
[21:47:39] clever: mythbusters bleeped out the chemical way to light it
[21:47:40] PatrickDK: thermites melts basically everything :)
[21:47:57] clever: yeah ive seen prank sites saying to do it on the hood of a car
[21:47:58] clever: and melt right thru the engine block
[21:48:13] PatrickDK: pavement, dirt, ....
[21:48:30] wagnerrp: thats a pretty cruel prank
[21:48:31] clever: your lucky the dirt doesnt catch fire:P
[21:48:47] clever: wagnerrp: yeah
[21:48:59] clever: wagnerrp: but ive seen more cruel stuff in the same area of the site
[21:49:08] clever: explaining how to tape a shotgun shell to a door
[21:49:20] clever: so it goes off(thru the door) when you slam it open
[21:49:49] wagnerrp: pranks should be cheaky and relatively painless
[21:50:00] clever: then the even more crazy ideas, that aid in natrual selection
[21:50:01] wagnerrp: not sadistic
[21:50:19] clever: how to make a shotgun shell go off when you throw it(to make it land/hit the igniter)
[21:51:32] clever: then the more harmless seeming ones, weighted baloon of hydrogen droped into the smoking area of the school(from another floor above)
[21:51:42] clever: if you try to pop it with a lit cancer stick...
[21:52:12] wagnerrp: you just get a loud boom, maybe some temporary hearing loss
[21:52:41] wagnerrp: theres not enough power in single balloon at one atmosphere to really cause any trouble
[21:52:50] clever: yeah
[21:52:58] PatrickDK: sure there is
[21:52:59] clever: but it can still scare the shit out of the poor sob:P
[21:53:06] PatrickDK: if the baloon is thick enough
[21:53:22] PatrickDK: or you use acytelen
[21:53:27] at0m|c: try dry ice and water in a plastic bottle
[21:53:31] PatrickDK: or use oxy/acet
[21:53:39] clever: at0m|c: seen it
[21:53:55] wagnerrp: oxy/acet is different because its already an explosive mixture, it detonates
[21:53:57] clever: PatrickDK: yeah a oxy/acet welding torch is made to put out the perfect mixture
[21:54:03] wagnerrp: the hydrogen balloon will just burn
[21:54:22] clever: tune the knobs for the next flame, then shut it off for a second to put it out
[21:54:29] clever: then fill baloons with the perfect mixture
[21:54:49] wagnerrp: my uncle belongs to a gun club
[21:54:49] clever: though the red hot tip may melt your baloons:P
[21:55:02] wagnerrp: some dumbass there filled a 55-gallon trash bag using that method
[21:55:09] clever: lol
[21:55:16] clever: natrual selection!
[21:55:50] wagnerrp: the airport 4 miles away dispatched police to figure out what happened
[21:56:14] clever: shock wave, sound, fireball?
[21:56:15] clever: which did they notice:P
[21:56:27] clever: (check all that apply)
[21:56:31] wagnerrp: apparently the guy cut 30 seconds of timing wick, and ran
[21:56:38] wagnerrp: just a shockwave
[21:56:48] wagnerrp: good explosives have no (or very little) fireball
[21:56:49] clever: lol
[21:57:06] clever: ahh
[21:57:13] wagnerrp: fire indicates slow burning, explosives require detonation

[22:53:43] justinh: flac is lossless anyway – best compression there is without mucking up the audio with psychoacoustic trickery
[22:54:06] wagnerrp: anyway, im just wondering how much FLAC compresses
[22:54:30] dustybin: wagnerrp: about the same as a 320kbps mp3
[22:54:37] justinh: varies according to the source
[22:54:56] wagnerrp: i mean a CD is.. what, 1.4Mbps?
[22:55:18] justinh: the bitrate isn't changed
[22:55:25] wagnerrp: so around a quarter the space
[22:55:26] justinh: samplerate remains the same, as does the resolution
[22:55:31] wagnerrp: THE BITRATE HAS CHANGED
[22:55:49] justinh: it's immaterial
[22:55:52] wagnerrp: its compressed, meaning there is now a different average bitrate
[22:55:54] justinh: input == output
[22:56:00] wagnerrp: its immaterial to quality
[22:56:08] wagnerrp: but it makes a difference in streaming and storage
[22:56:16] justinh: anyway, 30% to 50% compression ratio
[22:56:22] justinh: which is pretty good
[22:56:33] wagnerrp: ok, so its about as good as huffman for video
[22:57:06] dustybin: justinh: is your backend on a UPS?
[22:57:59] justinh: dustybin: nah. never got around to it. it's only telly
[22:58:20] dustybin: aye indeed
[22:58:35] dustybin: justinh: at least your 20W better off

[23:01:57] wagnerrp: i dare say its due time to close the windows and turn the AC back on
[23:01:59] justinh: got a hammer? ;)
