[02:54:18] quink: ATI....its not the recommended path for mythtv?
[02:54:38] fryfrog: quink: correct, both for input and output
[02:54:56] fryfrog: but if you already *have* something ATI, I'd give it a try since it is free :)
[02:54:59] quink: Is this a trend i should expect for the future or its just based off of current hardware trends?
[02:55:24] fryfrog: ATI + Linux is just not very good, historically.
[02:55:30] kormoc: quink, "ATI has stated publicly that they don't support MythTV in their fglrx X11 driver: 737–26907: Unsupported Features with ATI Linux Drivers", http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATI_Prop . . . ternal_links

[02:55:51] fryfrog: not really
[02:55:52] quink: this hiper htpc system i'm looking at seems very cool.
[02:56:03] fryfrog: it would only really blow if there were no alternatives :)
[02:56:07] fryfrog: ah, and it is ati/amd based?
[02:56:14] quink: yep
[02:56:15] wagner: there have been rumors that ati will better support linux due to their amd merger, but they have so far just been rumors
[02:56:25] quink: http://www.hipergroup.com/English/products/hmc-2k53a.html
[02:56:32] fryfrog: send em (and ati?) a note saying you didn't buy this because of their crappy support, maybe someone will get a clue
[02:56:35] quink: well wrong link, but thats the general idea.
[02:57:07] quink: http://www.hipergroup.com/English/products/hmc-2k53a-a3.html
[02:57:08] quink: there
[02:57:25] fryfrog: is it just ATI video *output*?
[02:57:32] wagner: well chances are they will never support linux on their cablecard products, but thats a different issue
[02:57:39] Agrajag-: wagner: it's been a lot more than just rumors, they have since released a lot of specs
[02:58:03] quink: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodd . . . prod_no=1165
[02:58:06] quink: that is the mobo

[02:58:28] fryfrog: hey, it is just a micro atx mb?
[02:58:30] quink: and someone suggested hiper systems
[02:58:32] wagner: so theyre releasing specs to allow better 3rd-party drivers, rather than open-sourcing their in-house drivers
[02:59:31] quink: I'd really like to find hte lowest power system that could handle HD playback

[03:04:05] wagner: broadcast mpeg2 HD, you can get buy with a cheap amd64 and xvmc
[03:04:48] quink: It just seems silly that if i know a system is goin to be used almost entirely for video and almost entirely idle that i can't find a low power solution
[03:04:48] wagner: downloaded mpeg4 HD, your lowest power solution is probably a mobile core 2 system, but thats not going to be cheap
[03:04:54] fryfrog: my amd64 4200+ X2 plays back x264, and it was pretty cheap
[03:05:26] fryfrog: quink: modern cpus can throttle themselves back a *lot*
[03:05:39] fryfrog: they won't be burning a whole lot of power when idle
[03:05:42] quink: fryfrog: i have a s939 3000+ that still pulls down 110w idle
[03:05:47] quink: thats a lot.
[03:05:51] quink: i'm looking for 40w
[03:05:55] quink: as something reasonable
[03:06:02] wagner: quink: is that the processor, or the whole machine?
[03:06:10] quink: whole machine
[03:06:23] quink: But i do know for a fact that mobil cpu based systems will hit maybe 60w at the most
[03:06:28] wagner: ok, i doubt youre going to get down to 40W without use a mobile system
[03:06:56] fryfrog: did you measure that with one of those kill-a-watt things?
[03:07:02] quink: yeah
[03:07:04] fryfrog: i should find out how much my server / desktop / etc use

[03:08:38] quink: wagner: dunno what to say. Its a 17" lcd and a 15"lcd
[03:09:52] AudioV: i hope ATi's drivers improve, it'd be nice to have good support for the 780g
[03:10:18] AudioV: i'd love to move to a 45w CPU and a 780g
[03:11:12] quink: Just seems to me, whether it is reasonable or not, that an idle system should consume next to no power
[03:11:19] wagner: perhaps i was wrong, my 17" uses 20W, my 20" uses 17W
[03:11:24] wagner: seems backwards actually
[03:12:36] AudioV: that is kinda weird
[03:12:52] AudioV: my 20" is supposed to use ~25w i think

[03:56:35] wagner: and then use it to scroll
[03:56:47] justdave: hmm, yeah, that'd work
[03:56:56] clever: on linux you can move windows off the edges of screens
[03:56:57] wagner: or if youre brave, you can do it all from the command line
[03:57:10] clever: ive seen a ubuntu walkthru for installing from 640x480
[03:57:10] wagner: clever, you can do the same on windows
[03:57:29] clever: it explains a gconf-edit setting which lets you move windows past any edge(including top)
[03:57:32] wagner: but thats only if your window manager lets you move a window from something other than the top edge
[03:57:42] fryfrog: no wai, a screen bigger than your monitor!
[03:57:42] clever: and then using alt+drag you can do it without the titlebar
[03:57:44] fryfrog: impossible!
[04:00:45] kormoc: wagner, a lot of WM's allow keyboard movement based on accessibility settings.
[04:01:38] clever: windows compiz and metacity let you alt+space(or right click titlebar/taskbar) for the 'system menu' then under move you can move with the arrow keys
[04:02:08] clever: windows wont let you move with the mouse when you do that but metacity and compiz do
[04:02:54] wagner: clever: in windows, you can still move with the mouse. you just have to hit one of the arrow keys first
[04:03:00] clever: ah
[04:03:15] clever: its allways reset the window to normal when i hit the left button
[04:03:51] clever: that was weird
[04:03:59] clever: vnc totaly stoped updating when i got it moving
[04:04:04] clever: but output still worked
[04:04:05] wagner: right, you have to hit an arrow key to put it into 'move' mode, and then the mouse moves the window
[04:04:19] wagner: clicking the mouse exits 'move' mode
[04:04:23] clever: ah
[04:04:34] clever: so your forced to use both the keyboard&mouse:P
[04:04:47] wagner: well you can use the keyboard alone
[04:04:53] clever: yeah
[04:05:09] wagner: however you have to use the keyboard to hit 'alt+space' anyway
[04:05:25] clever: enless you right click the title or task bar areas
[04:05:28] wagner: unless you have something you can right click on
[04:05:36] wagner: right
[04:05:52] clever: also for some weird reason alt+right click(anywhere in the window) opens that on compiz
[04:06:13] clever: catches me off guard when it comes up where it shouldnt normaly open
[04:06:27] wagner: it just grabs any time you hit a metakey
[04:06:34] clever: yeah
[04:06:36] wagner: i cant use 'ctrl' on my laptop with vnc
[04:06:48] clever: i cant alt+drag in vnc

[04:06:58] wagner: its annoying... no ctrl-z, no ctrl-c, but i havent gotten around to fixing it
[04:07:09] clever: yeah ctrl was totaly dead in vnc for me too
[04:07:24] clever: im on a diff install now(and posibly diff vnc version/package)
[04:07:31] clever: now its just shift+mouse problems
[04:07:41] clever: i suspect it only detects shift when its used with keys
[04:07:46] justdave: ok, that worked. thanks for the tip :)
[04:07:54] clever: and the mouse code doesnt detect keyboard modifiers
[04:08:01] clever: and i cant alt+click either because of the move
[04:08:13] clever: but ctrl and alt are under F8

[04:15:22] tonyb: clever: ah okay thanks. I'll check that out.
[04:16:17] clever: wagner: ive also noticed another problem with the vnc viewer
[04:16:22] clever: if the window is too short
[04:16:28] clever: it adds a scrollbar to the right
[04:16:38] clever: which then makes it too narrow and adds one to the bottom
[04:16:47] clever: but it wont let me make it any wider then the remote screen

[04:18:17] ksool: Does anybody know why my audio would stayon after I stop myth? (It's not recording either.) Card is Brooktree Bt878
[04:18:20] clever: realvnc on winblows sucks cpu and lags
[04:18:32] clever: but the Xvnc4 im using on linux is fairly fast
[04:18:47] wagner: what do you mean the audio stays on?
[04:18:48] clever: vino/x0vncserver both suck cpu
[04:19:07] wagner: if its not recording, what is playing?
[04:19:12] ksool: wagner, I mean, watch tv, exit mythfrontend, and tv audio keeps playing last channel.
[04:19:29] ksool: wagner, I can hear the audio when watching live, but it's not recorded.
[04:20:01] wagner: do the brooktree cards have audio recording, or do they have to loop through the sound card?
[04:20:04] clever: im guessing the audio is going thru the internal loopback
[04:20:21] clever: my bt848 has some kind of audio capture but i never even bothered trying to use it
[04:20:30] clever: i just fed it right from the tuner->soundcard
[04:20:51] ksool: I have mine running through the soundcard now.
[04:21:00] ksool: I was under the impression that was the only way it could be done.
[04:21:07] clever: ksool: try going back to watch tv
[04:21:10] clever: and pause the video
[04:21:14] clever: what happens to the audio?
[04:21:15] wagner: odd that mythtv wouldnt shutdown the tuner after it stopped recording
[04:21:37] ksool: audio keeps on rolling.
[04:21:47] clever: unpause
[04:21:56] clever: its now lost the sync right?
[04:22:00] clever: several seconds appart
[04:22:19] ksool: Exactly.
[04:22:25] clever: exactly what i expected
[04:22:30] clever: the audio isnt going thru myth
[04:22:40] clever: the linein is going right thru the card to lineout
[04:22:46] clever: no recording/playback
[04:22:53] ksool: Ok, know how to remedy?
[04:23:01] clever: mute the linein on the playback volume controls
[04:23:09] ksool: Done.
[04:23:11] clever: and properly setup what to get audio from in the tuner setup
[04:23:17] clever: in mythtv-setup
[04:23:32] wagner: my cards all output mpeg, so luckily ive never had to deal with audio
[04:23:52] clever: i started with a bt848 video extreme highway
[04:23:59] clever: now i have a pvr150
[04:24:04] ksool: So all I've got in mythtv-setup is "audio device: /dev/dsp"
[04:24:13] clever: which also needs an incompabiel .ko that the bt848 also needs
[04:24:19] clever: so i cant use both cards at once
[04:24:32] clever: and set whcih input on that card to record from(line in:P)
[04:25:56] ksool: maybe I'm being thick, I'm not seeing an option to select audio input.
[04:26:24] clever: i'll check mine
[04:28:12] clever: under input connections
[04:28:27] clever: dont see anything about audio
[04:29:01] ksool: So under input connections, I've got television, composite1, s-video, composite3 all from /dev/v4l/video0. No audio.
[04:29:08] clever: thats weird
[04:29:13] clever: i cant find my audio settings anywhere
[04:30:39] clever: ive looked everywhere and cant find it:S

[04:33:44] clever: they are either missing or im blind
[04:35:15] ksool: So could it be that I've got alsa setup wrong? The docs are making me thing I need an asoundrc file (which I don't have)/
[04:35:38] clever: i only needed to make my asoundrc when i started using 2 alsa cards
[04:35:50] clever: to get some things to use a certain card
[04:37:23] wagner: i know why everything is messed up, i never reindexed my package tree after grabbing a new one over cvs

[04:56:18] devicenull: ugh, thats annoying
[04:56:31] AudioV: mythweb is good for imdb
[04:56:46] wagner: if youve got too many videos, you can filter them down in the manager
[04:56:51] wagner: filter by year unknown
[04:57:06] devicenull: really? I didnt see much on mythweb for it
[04:57:45] devicenull: oh
[04:57:50] devicenull: mythweb doesnt seem to work well in ff3
[04:58:11] AudioV: mythweb gives me an imdb button beside every video, click it, it searches, shows a bunch of potentials, if there isn't a match you refine the search or do a manual search and give it the imdb #
[04:58:32] devicenull: oh
[04:58:35] devicenull: thats not working for me

[05:07:04] wagner: actually, there is a reason
[05:07:15] devicenull: yea, it doesnt like the filename format
[05:07:16] wagner: the mythtv grabber is only set up for movies
[05:07:33] wagner: it was never designed for tv episodes
[05:07:38] devicenull: yea, I noticed
[05:07:41] devicenull: what I meant was
[05:07:53] devicenull: when I edit the video # in mythweb, it doesn't go grab the rest of the info using it
[05:08:03] devicenull: like it does if I edit the video # in the video manager
[05:08:29] wagner: right, well that is a problem with mythweb
[05:08:37] wagner: ive not found a solution yet either
[05:08:55] wagner: i usually just load up a frontend in a vnc window
[05:09:04] wagner: so i have a keyboard and mouse to work with
[05:09:09] wagner: rather than using the remote
[05:09:13] devicenull: I still have a keyboard attached to it, so thats not a huge deal
[05:10:31] devicenull: though, with 537 unique episodes, I think I'll look into to automating this first
[05:11:01] wagner: yeah, ive been meaning to write an external program for some time
[05:11:07] wagner: ive got it partially written
[05:11:37] wagner: it takes md5 and crc hashes, as well as processing the series, season and episode numbers
[05:11:49] wagner: but i havent bothered to figure out how to actually grab data
[05:11:56] wagner: or subsequently feed it into mythtv
[05:11:58] devicenull: I was just going to call the perl script
[05:12:33] wagner: i really wanted something outside of mythtv, in its own database
[05:12:39] wagner: so the built in stuff wouldnt do
[05:13:52] devicenull: well, I figure it's easier to use the built in stuff
[05:14:09] wagner: most likely
[05:14:28] venger: is there a script that allows for manual upgrade of the mythtv schema? i'd like to import a 0.20.2 mysqldump into a 0.21 install which resides on seperate partition and then upgrade the schema – if possible
[05:15:49] devicenull: just looking at the filenames, parsing the season/episode numbers is going to be a pain
[05:16:16] califdreas: wagner & devicenull: there is a script you may find useful.
[05:16:20] califdreas: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/ . . . rage;#326522
[05:16:22] devicenull: oh?
[05:16:57] devicenull: hmm
[05:17:12] wagner: how useful is tvrage? ive usually just used epguides and tv.com
[05:17:55] califdreas: I checked tvrage for some random info and found it quite sufficient.
[05:18:51] devicenull: hmm
[05:19:00] devicenull: looks like I can fairly easily batch call this
[05:19:28] devicenull: though
[05:19:36] devicenull: my filenames arent even close to what it wants
[05:20:19] califdreas: well, i dont' use the script myself. what does it expect in a filename?
[05:20:22] wagner: its a perl script, so you probably just have to rewrite a handful of regular expressions
[05:20:32] devicenull: it *says* it expects episode.title.format.s01e01.blah.avi
[05:20:39] devicenull: but it just worked fine for "House 101.avi"
[05:22:15] wagner: check out function 'getShowDataFromName'
[05:22:45] wagner: theres a whole series of pre-processing functions that internally modifies the file string into what it wants to process

[07:52:46] crazy_bus: Dibblah: I think I set that to yes. What does it mean
[07:52:49] Dibblah: Otherwise the seektable doesn't have info for the recording and all sorts of wierdness abounds.
[07:53:12] justinh: oh gawd. emails sent out at 6pm on Friday telling the 'good news'. Two very much disliked managers have been promoted to director level
[07:53:28] directhex: justinh, the dilbert principle works!

[08:40:53] justinh: crazy_bus: mpeg files can contain a variety of different formats – mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg4 ... the extension often has FA to do with it
[08:41:04] justinh: rm_you: forget that idea. software encoding sucks
[08:41:10] tjcarter: hmm, this is a pretty nice myth-in-a-box: http://www.amamax.com/msimelisoamc.html

[13:23:16] gbee: I think they'd blame their own problems on their overstocking of vista machines in expectation that the Vista release would result in a sales boom – it didn't
[13:24:04] directhex: DSGi do *not* train their staff about what they sell
[13:24:10] justinh: case in point.. an old dear wanted a DAB radio so she could listen to radio3. sales guy was just fecking clueless – he just kept waffling on about how this radio could definitely pick up Kiss, galaxy etc but didn't know about bbc radio 3. ffs where the hell had he been to miss the bbc propaganda?
[13:24:52] justinh: they ping-ponged for a bit so I approached them & told the old dear the spec. that's when they moved me to another till, mid transaction
[13:24:59] directhex: DSGi staff are trained to *lie confidently*, not to be informed. if the customer is just as clueless as you, make it up but sound certain about it, to make them feel reassured
[13:25:12] directhex: the only trainign that happens is occasional paid vendor briefs. mostly from belkin or epson

[14:02:35] gbee: assuming for a moment I accept that it's possible for cables to oxidise badly enough in an average lifespan – would it still not be a saner investment to buy new copper cables every 10 years than pay incredible sums for a silver cable?
[14:02:46] AndyCap: ajh: I doubt that mains power propagation speed is a sane corner case though
[14:02:48] justinh: ajh: that's just it though – it actually has to have changed colour & stuff :)

[14:43:51] MaxeyPad2: guys I want to use this to MOVE files to the box
[14:44:10] MaxeyPad2: and 802.11n isn't exactly sucky in terms of throughput...although based on what I see I might just do ethernet over power
[14:44:35] Neeesat: Done that and I got a message at the end saying: "Your grabber does not provide channel numbers, So you have to set them manually" and it's waiting. Is this correct?
[14:46:04] kormoc: MaxeyPad2, I've done EthoP before and it had amazingly crappy speeds down in the low 1 megabytes per seconds
[14:46:07] directhex: MaxeyPad2, i never said anything about bandwidth, i commented on reliable throughput. wireless transmission does not maintain a consistently high enough level of transfer at any given moment (where wireless often has connections which 'bunch up' or fail to respond for a few seconds then return to normal
[14:46:21] directhex: fine for file transfer, but not largely unbuffered streaming
[14:47:08] ajh: wireless can be fine, put in a couple directional panels and use a free channel, it's when you're oversubscribed in the area to freq space that you get issues.

[15:04:12] sphery: (we just need a bunch of people/time to make those drivers :)
[15:05:13] rwalker: That would take a lot longer than them just adding support to the current closed drivers
[15:05:49] rwalker: It sucks, I got an AMD 780g w/ 4850e proc and can't even play back HD without skipping.. :(
[15:07:53] directhex: rwalker, well, here's one way to look at it. how long as xvmc existed? how long have ati's drivers existed? what year is it?
[15:07:59] sphery: yeah, unfortunately (fortunately?) XvMC is a much-unloved specification and while some (Intel) have plans to replace it with another, some (me) feel that it and its ilk are best just avoided
[15:08:16] directhex: consider also: crossfire; 3000-series support
[15:08:50] rwalker: How else would you have the hardware accelerate decoding?
[15:08:58] sphery: it's very unlikely that a company would invest time in work on supporting a spec that's limiting and "going by the wayside" (NVIDIA has dropped support for XvMC in all 8x00 series GPU's)
[15:09:07] sphery: rwalker: CPU is hardware :)
[15:09:22] GreyFoxx: spher: They did? I didn't know they dropped it
[15:09:25] sphery: Basically, I think hardware accelerated is too limiting
[15:09:32] rwalker: No CPU can decode 1080p x264 currently...
[15:09:36] sphery: GreyFoxx: yep. They want us to use the OpenGL stuff.
[15:09:42] GreyFoxx: No matter to me, I don't use it, but funny since I just picked up a 8500 heh
[15:09:44] directhex: rwalker, plenty of CPUs can
[15:10:00] GreyFoxx: rwalk: My system can player every single test clip I've found
[15:10:01] sphery: rwalker: not true. need multiple procs/cores and multithreaded decoding support
[15:10:07] ** directhex thinks GLSL is the right way to do a lot of this junk. modern GPUs are fine **
[15:10:18] ** sphery agrees with directhex **
[15:10:22] rwalker: I am currently running a 4850e (Dual core 2.5ghz) and it can't even do HDTV
[15:10:27] sphery: (because that's software decoding in other hardware)
[15:10:29] directhex: and GLSL should make it vendor-agnostic as long as there's a fast GPU with 3d support there
[15:10:44] directhex: rwalker, well, that's because amd cpus are slow
[15:10:57] GreyFoxx: rwalk: My sempron 2600+ could do HDTV mpeg2, once in a blue moon I'd find one that skipped but that was rare
[15:10:59] sphery: directhex: and GLSL allows us to maintain control over how it's decoded
[15:11:07] rwalker: I was going for low power, since this box will be on all the time
[15:11:12] directhex: rwalker, according to my benchmarking, a 1.8ghz core2 is enough to play the nastiest most demanding HD out there – BBCHD
[15:11:13] GreyFoxx: my x2 5200 has played everything I've thrown at it
[15:11:31] rwalker: GreyFoxx, what did you do to get that working?
[15:11:37] GreyFoxx: rwa: Which >?
[15:11:50] GreyFoxx: the sempron?
[15:11:50] sphery: rwalker: there are various tricks for allowing a "close, but not quite" proc to handle decoding H.264 HDTV. Things like disabling the deblocking filter or using CoreAVC
[15:12:12] directhex: wabbit! http://www.fascinationst.com/productImages/sku2353.jpg
[15:12:29] rwalker: I am running Mythbuntu, added some opengl accelleration to xorg.conf which got it to at least play, but still skips
[15:13:01] rwalker: This is just on 1080i (mpeg2)
[15:13:07] sphery: rwalker: check the -users list archive. There have been many people who have talked about how to handle H.264 HDTV.
[15:13:20] GreyFoxx: rwalk: your machine should be able to EASILY handle that
[15:13:27] directhex: sphery, how many of them say "buy intel"? ;)
[15:13:30] sphery: Oh, then much easier (and your proc should handle that without breaking a sweat)
[15:13:30] GreyFoxx: Assuming drivers and such are setup correctly
[15:13:30] rwalker: That is what I would have thought
[15:13:52] GreyFoxx: rwal: Using OpenGL video renderer (which takes more CPU) or the XV-blit ?

[15:14:12] rwalker: OpenGL
[15:14:18] directhex: assuming functional xv and/or gl, which is saying a lot for ati
[15:14:19] Neeesat: If I try mythfilldatabase --xml-tv_grab_el I get: illegal option: '--xml' (use --help)
[15:14:27] GreyFoxx: rwalk: That takes more CPU than standard XV output
[15:14:32] sphery: rwalker: use Xv (i.e. the unmodified Slim playback profile group)
[15:14:42] GreyFoxx: though it should still work, but I would try going to plain XV
[15:14:42] sphery: there's no shame in running with Slim on a beefy machine
[15:14:48] rwalker: Is that going to look as good?
[15:14:48] sphery: (my new motto in life)
[15:15:06] GreyFoxx: rwalk: I don't really see a difference myself
[15:15:07] sphery: better than skipping frames/pausing, actually
[15:15:23] directhex: GreyFoxx, the OSD is 10x nicer with the GL combination, IME
[15:15:29] directhex: GreyFoxx, but that's the main diff
[15:15:56] GreyFoxx: dire: Yeah but I was referring to just the video. I can live with GrayOSD, + XV
[15:15:56] sphery: directhex: If using an OSD that's > 640x480 (i.e. Metallurgy), that probably doesn't hold true
[15:15:58] rwalker: On slim it did not look nearly as sharp
[15:16:17] sphery: rwalker: then try different deinterlacers
[15:16:25] Neeesat: directhex: Any idea how to proceed? Lets say I have my tv_grab_el in /usr/bin

[15:17:36] Neeesat: ok man I will try thanks

[15:17:58] ** sphery hopes that danielk at least took the bounty offered for #5346 **
[15:18:45] sphery: as from the requester's post, it sounds like paying someone to add non-MPEG support to comskip would have been much more appropriate
[15:22:39] sphery: rwalker: HQ isn't too bad, but with your proc, you'd be better off creating your own (as described in the wiki page). Profile group, "Custom", one profile "> 0 0", ffmpeg, xv-blit, softblend, fade on, deints to yadifdoubleprocessdeint with fallback to greedyhdoubleprocessdeint (assuming your display = TV supports the required refresh rate)
[15:23:45] sphery: rwalker: in other words, your processor can do more than HQ does. (But I /highly/ recommend creating a custom group rather than modifying the examples.)

[18:36:10] directhex: kormoc, well, yeah, if you're gonna readthe full wikipedia article on it, you're right. but for most people, "writethrough happens immediately, writeback stays in cache for a while" is a reasonable way to define it
[18:36:35] wagner: so, writethrough only improves read performance

[18:37:58] kormoc: hence the terms starting with write

[19:48:07] Dibblah: And don't want encrypted channels.
[19:48:26] wagner: praet: usually people have a backend in a closet, and a small frontend by their tv, or just stick the whole machine next to the tv
[19:48:28] praet: wagner: 27 GBP = 52$
[19:48:57] Nik_Doof: shame i dont have pcie in my backend either
[19:49:00] wagner: i realize its about the same price, but i get a single tuner
[19:49:06] wagner: does that do two or four channels?
[19:49:08] praet: i just wallmounted my tv, coax and cat-5 to a closet, and I cant watch it without my myth :/
[19:49:56] praet: I was looking at those bal-uns to split the cat5 into rca+ir
[19:50:02] gbee: wagner: it's not clear, minimum it does two, either 1xdvb-t & 1xdvb-s or 2xdvb-s or 2xdvb-t
[19:50:04] Nik_Doof: mmm it looks like (from the description) it can flip between s or t, but cant run both at the same time

[19:50:16] justinh: praet: composite is only ever any good for SDTV though
[19:50:16] wagner: the tv is outside the closet, the computer is insider the closet? same wall but different sides?
[19:50:29] gbee: but with multirec that could mean recording from a _lot_ of channels at the same time
[19:51:06] wagner: dont expect to run composite (or component) signals over cat5 for much difference
[19:51:16] wagner: err... much distance
[19:51:18] praet: justinh: you are right, also, the 350 coax out is sdtv too right?
[19:51:25] wagner: youll get signal loss very quickly
[19:51:26] praet: its about 20 feet away
[19:51:28] justinh: doesn't have coax out
[19:51:34] justinh: composite & svideo
[19:51:38] anykey_: anyone seen passwd not accepting passwords?
[19:51:44] praet: oh
[19:51:49] justinh: VGA will go over cat5 alright with the right gear either end
[19:51:50] jarle (jarle!n=jarle@70.84-234-133.customer.lyse.net) has quit (Remote closed the connection)
[19:52:07] wagner: VGA is a balanced signal isnt it?
[19:52:08] justinh: better still, get DVI/HDMI – 20 metres!
[19:52:12] justinh: wagner: nope
[19:52:15] dustybin: Meet the Immigrants – BBC1 @ 10:30PM, dont forget to record folks :P
[19:52:30] justinh: but once converted to balanced, VGA can go for about 100 feet
[19:52:39] praet: VGA 15 pin to cat-5 is possible?
[19:52:43] justinh: yeah
[19:52:44] sphery: praet: I have a long VGA cable for video. Audio is speaker wire (my receiver is in the closet with Myth). I use RF for remote, but it's pretty easy to get a long IR receiver cable (or, should be, depending on type of IR receiver).
[19:53:01] praet: interesting
[19:53:15] MinDKrime: anykey_: I have seen that once when using the ! character
[19:53:15] justinh: better still, get DVI/HDMI – 20 metres! and if your TV is a flat panel you should be using HDMI/DVI anyway
[19:53:23] praet: i could just use speakers and skip the tv itself for that
[19:53:41] anykey_: MinDKrime: it's not even reading a password..
[19:53:48] praet: its a flat panel, but I only ran cat-5 and coax(rg6?) to the closet
[19:53:53] MinDKrime: Oh :( then no sorry
[19:53:55] sphery: praet: yeah, the speaker in my TV is only used for XBox 360 (where I don't care for "good" audio)
[19:53:57] praet: so thats what i have towork with
[19:54:12] praet: and the xbox is near the tv.. no problem :)
[19:54:14] Dibblah: http://www.linuxtv.org/v4lwiki/index.php/Saa7162_devices
[19:54:18] Dibblah: So 4 streams.
[19:54:27] justinh: so run HDMI in – it'll be worth the hassle
[19:55:20] praet: so dvi off the comp to hdmi?
[19:55:27] justinh: anyway, IMHO a slap is in order for forgetting the needs of the myth box :P
[19:55:32] justinh: yeah
[19:55:56] gbee: famicom: which chipset?
[19:56:03] justinh: DVI/HDMI can go for more than 15 metres & still meet HDMI certification
[19:56:03] sphery: note that VGA will be much better than DVI/HDMI for very long cable runs, though
[19:56:04] wagner: are there cheap external boxes that will mux in the audio?
[19:56:06] famicom: R610
[19:56:14] justinh: sphery: see above :)
[19:56:26] famicom: it's on a radeon HD2400Pro
[19:56:29] justinh: wagner: nope
[19:56:31] sphery: yeah, unlikely that the extra length would be required, but...
[19:56:54] justinh: depends what you call 'very long'

[19:57:08] gbee: it's incredible the difference DVI/HDMI makes compared to analogue on my tv – blacks are black with HDMI, they are grey with analogue, same source
[19:57:09] justinh: we have 15m HDMI cables at work & they look fine
[19:57:12] praet: justinh: i deserve it.. definately locked myself out this time
[19:57:44] justinh: same Q as 1.5m long cables as far as I can tell
[19:57:56] praet: those hdmi>cat-5 baluns are 500
[19:58:02] justinh: yup
[19:58:13] devicenull: hey is there a cheap solution to audio/video switchers? I know a couple people I know have what seem to be simple hardware siwtches but I'm not sure if thats going to screw anything up
[19:58:17] praet: im better off running hdmi to the basement and back up
[19:58:22] wagner: gefen DVI + SPDIV to HDMI... only $300
[19:58:27] gbee: famicom: mine is an onboard Radeon X1250 (AMD 690G board) – Alsa 1.0.16
[19:58:28] sphery: The fact that DVI/HDMI are designed using a signalling interface that was designed for coax cables and is actually transmitted on twisted pair means that you can get very poor performance even at distances that should work for DVI/HDMI if you have the wrong equipment (i.e. everything from cable to TMDS tranmitters and TMDS receivers come into play)
[19:58:40] famicom: gbee aah
[19:58:41] famicom: yeah
[19:58:46] famicom: thats a different chipset
[19:58:55] devicenull: I mainly need audio, since I have 4 audio inputs to switch between
[19:59:23] justinh: sphery: coax & twisted pair are both designed to act like a transmission line – they're very much alike
[19:59:42] Dibblah: sphery: Eh?
[19:59:45] AudioV: i need to get a DVI/HDMI switcher, projector only has one digital input :-/
[19:59:46] sphery: justinh: but it's much harder to properly control impedance on twisted pair
[19:59:59] AudioV: right now i use mythtv over vga
[20:00:00] Dibblah: It is not designed for coax.
[20:00:06] Dibblah: It's LVDS.
[20:00:34] praet: i am thinking that i can get to the closet by snaking through a stairwell area.. so what is the proper cabling [cpu > dvi > hdmi converter > hdmi cable > tv]
[20:00:41] Dibblah: 5 differential pairs, each individually shielded.
[20:00:41] wagner: LVDS/TMDS/whatever are all differential signals (hence the DS)
[20:00:50] wagner: differential signals are designed for twisted pair
[20:01:03] Dibblah: ... Which is what I said, I believe.

[20:02:20] Dibblah: It's what I'm doing, except for having 2 DVI -> HDMI converters, one on each end.
[20:02:31] wagner: either run separate analog audio, or buy a new video card that can mux in the audio stream
[20:02:37] praet: then for the ir/audio, i can use the existing unused cat-5 and coax mix
[20:02:44] wagner: buying a box to send the audio over the hdmi isnt worth the cost
[20:02:47] praet: wagner: what card?

[20:03:30] wagner: most of the descrete HDMI cards have audio inputs
[20:03:38] Dibblah: Unless you're going to do a proper differential amp on each end, I wouldn't use cat-5 for audio.
[20:03:54] praet: Dibblah: so your tv takes dvi in?
[20:04:01] Dibblah: Personally, I'd just use digital audio.

[20:04:19] AudioV: digital coax would run a good length
[20:04:23] Dibblah: yup.
[20:04:44] AudioV: optical would too obviously but that'd be rather expensive
[20:04:46] praet: Dibblah: the tv only has mono in with hdmi, and stereo rca with composite
[20:05:18] praet: im thinking that splitting to speakers will be easier
[20:05:33] Dibblah: I have a seperate amp.
[20:05:54] wagner: the tv only accepts mono over hdmi?
[20:06:30] wagner: was it designed to act as the center speaker or something?

[20:07:24] AudioV: wouldn't make much sense to send mono over HDMI still

[20:07:50] richards (richards!n=richard@rns-stearn.demon.co.uk) has joined #mythtv-users
[20:07:56] AudioV: are you sure it's a mono in, not digital coax in?
[20:07:59] wagner: there is a single rca for audio which is probably digital (SPDIF)
[20:08:13] wagner: meaning stereo LPCM, or 5.1 compressed
[20:08:24] AudioV: digital coax is an RCA jack
[20:08:27] praet: im reading the tv manual
[20:08:58] praet: ah ok
[20:10:47] praet: i messed up.. its vga(pc cable in) with a single mono audio in, or hdmi + 2 rca in, or composite + 2 rca audio (5 rca jacks), and the digital audio is only out
[20:11:35] directhex: composite with audio is 3 jacks
[20:11:40] directhex: component makes 5
