[03:42:54] GreyFoxx: A few of us have talked about setting something up at SD so that we can keep alist of QAM/ATSC channels so people don;t have to scan most of the time
[03:43:16] Toxicity999: GreyFoxx just point mplayer to the raw nodes created by IVTV for a/v
[03:43:19] Toxicity999: works like a charm

[03:44:09] Toxicity999: GreyFoxx it's direct input for a game console, that's not a problem.

[03:47:04] Tanthrix: All my QAM channels have a service id of 16, but when I look at the rows with a source id of 16 on dtv_multiplex, they don't seem to match up in any way
[03:49:25] mzb: GreyFoxx: if there are two consecutive programmes on the same channel (eg. A and B) I sometimes get "overlap" (for want of a better phrase) so that the end of A and the start of B have the same content ... but sometimes it doesn't work
[03:50:18] GreyFoxx: I assume you are using that record early/end late stuff ?
[03:50:22] GreyFoxx: I don';t use any of that

[03:57:09] GreyFoxx: no
[03:57:12] clever[rev]: :(
[03:57:27] clever[rev]: i cant see that much of a diff between a hardware encoder and a dvb
[03:57:32] clever[rev]: both just output mpeg streams
[03:57:38] GreyFoxx: uhhhh
[03:57:41] clever[rev]: dvb though can output many
[03:57:44] GreyFoxx: no
[03:58:00] clever[rev]: what is different then?
[03:58:09] GreyFoxx: hardware encoder is 1 channel, 1 compressed feed. dvb is 1 channel, many compressed feeds and you just pick out the ones you want and ignore the others
[03:58:13] Tanthrix: GreyFoxx: By any chance do you know if the channels table and the dtv_multiplex table the only two tables that I need to mess with to add/modify/delete channels?
[03:58:21] clever[rev]: yeah
[03:58:35] GreyFoxx: so multirec lets you recording multiple compressed feeds from the 1 dvb channel
[03:58:38] clever[rev]: GreyFoxx: but cant overlap just be applied seperately to the selected feed/channel?
[03:59:12] Toxicity999: My questions before about a no lag solution for composite input, how about http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815100120 do kworlds tend to work at all under linux? *googles*
[03:59:31] GreyFoxx: clever[rev]: I don'tunderstand exactly what you are asking
[03:59:36] GreyFoxx: Tanthrix: Dunno
[03:59:39] mzb: GreyFoxx: in my case it really shouldn't matter ... I'm not talking about the "multiple streams per transport" feature of dvb ... I'm talking about the same stream with overlap (provided by softpad)
[03:59:50] Tanthrix: clever[rev]: Think multiple streams on the same frequency. The DVB card can only tune one frequency at a time, just the same that an analog card can, but the difference is that with digital streams there are sometimes more than one channel being broadcast at the same time.
[03:59:59] GreyFoxx: Tanthrix: Everytime I touch that stuff I have to figure it out all over again
[04:00:04] clever[rev]: GreyFoxx: yeah i know that
[04:00:04] Tanthrix: clever[rev]: Analog channels don't do that, so you can only tune one at a time.
[04:00:10] clever[rev]: Tanthrix: i mean
[04:00:23] clever[rev]: but i mean if i have 2 overlaping schedules on the SAME channel
[04:00:25] Tanthrix: GreyFoxx: I know the feeling. Thanks anyway.
[04:00:41] clever[rev]: how can i catch the overlaping parts to TWO files at once?
[04:00:50] GreyFoxx: You can't
[04:00:56] mzb: *that* is what I'm talking about
[04:01:04] mzb: and I *did* have it working
[04:01:16] mzb: (unless my eyes deceived me;)
[04:01:18] GreyFoxx: mzb: Only softpadding I'm aware of is from apatch in trac, not from anything actually in myth itself unless it's been added and I just didn';t notice the commit
[04:01:35] mzb: I haven't patched
[04:01:48] mzb: (except for shoutcast)
[04:02:05] clever[rev]: if i had overlaping working better id be able to record 5mins before/after certain shows while avoiding conflicts
[04:02:17] clever[rev]: and id be able to delete the show after X without loosing the last 5mins of X
[04:02:57] clever[rev]: currently when i record A, B i sometimes wind up with part of A in B and half of B missing(in C which i may not record)
[04:03:04] Tanthrix: That's not a bad idea, but for the record, that has nothing to do with multirec. Nothing to do with the tuner at all, actually. More a simple function of some file work with myth.
[04:03:08] mzb: Setup->TV Playback->General -> "Time to record before start of show" ... etc
[04:03:27] mzb: as opposed to hardpad which is ... errr ... hard :)

[04:10:34] rushfan: clever[rev]: Maybe plain ubuntu would support that sound card better?
[04:10:49] clever[rev]: automatic startup and simple shutdown/reboot option when you escape out of the main menu
[04:10:53] rushfan: I know I can get it working under gentoo but its a long, arduous installation.

[04:13:07] clever[rev]: rushfan: ive also got a 'hda' sound card in one of my laptops
[04:13:08] rushfan: OH god, I dont want to screw around with Debian.
[04:13:19] rushfan: clever[rev]: hmm. Im sure the analog on my soundcard would work
[04:13:21] clever[rev]: rushfan: it sounds like the card is designed to take digital audio and decode it in the card

[04:15:21] rushfan: mzb: I dont touch Debian. heh
[04:15:57] rushfan: I know Ubuntu is debian based. Not sure how much of debian it carries over
[04:16:37] mzb: not enough :)
[04:16:52] mzb: anyway ... your loss :P
[04:16:59] rushfan: Bleck. mzb: ever used gentoo? :P
[04:17:04] mzb: yes
[04:17:05] rushfan: Source based = efficient machine
[04:17:16] mzb: not efficient to maintain
[04:17:18] rushfan: Now it breaks a-lot, but its usually easy to fix things
[04:17:24] clever[rev]: ive got lfs on 2 harddrives
[04:17:28] rushfan: mzb: It definetely isnt for production environemnt
[04:17:31] clever[rev]: its basicaly gentoo with less automation
[04:17:44] rushfan: lfs? Yeah thats too extreme for me

[04:19:45] rushfan: keith4_: I had that problem with my HDHomeRun. hehe
[04:19:55] rushfan: I had to completely wipe out my database and start over

[04:20:00] clever[rev]: ouch
[04:20:09] keith4_: i doubt you *had* to do that

[04:21:34] rushfan: Its a bit scary really.
[04:21:39] clever[rev]: lol
[04:21:44] rushfan: You couldnt imagine how often things break
[04:21:54] rushfan: One time I broke every single executable on my machine. lol
[04:22:00] clever[rev]: OUCH!
[04:22:13] rushfan: Some *critical* libraries got borked, so even the revdep-rebuild scrip that rebuilds the library deps broken
[04:22:21] rushfan: Could ls, cd, cp, make, etc. etc.
[04:22:31] rushfan: Obviously I had to reinstall
[04:22:33] clever[rev]: cd is part of your shell
[04:22:39] clever[rev]: cd will allways work
[04:22:45] rushfan: clever[rev]: No, the shell broke
[04:22:55] rushfan: I couldnt su or anything
[04:23:00] clever[rev]: then you wont even be able to get a shell to do anything:P
[04:23:03] rushfan: So I couldnt fix anything because I couldnt get to root priveleges.
[04:23:08] rushfan: Even my gettys were broken
[04:23:15] keith4_: so now I have 154629 lines of "pcHDTV::GetSignal_v4l1(fd 13, input 3, v4l2): error(Invalid argument)" in backend log
[04:23:19] clever[rev]: init=/bin/sh from the kernel args
[04:23:21] rushfan: So I couldnt login as root. IT was messed up
[04:23:27] clever[rev]: rushfan: then youll have sh running as root with nothing else
[04:23:38] clever[rev]: but sh may also have been borked:P
[04:23:48] rushfan: Probably.
[04:23:53] rushfan: Everything was borked.
[04:24:00] rushfan: Except for wget and links oddly enough. lol
[04:24:12] clever[rev]: anything thats built staticly should keep working

[04:24:23] rushfan: clever[rev]: my whole machine is compiled though
[04:24:40] clever[rev]: most things are compiled in a dynamic mode though
[04:24:44] rushfan: Like I dont have one single binary on it. I even compile KDE and OOo which take hours
[04:24:52] clever[rev]: and use /etc/ld.so to pull in any needed lib's
[04:24:54] rushfan: Yeah, Gentoo has a BSD Ports style system
[04:25:15] rushfan: Im not sure how Ubuntu works since its binary
[04:25:16] clever[rev]: you need a binary to start all that:P
[04:25:23] clever[rev]: the compiler and friends
[04:25:32] rushfan: clever[rev]: well yeah, but I actually recompile those once downloaded
[04:25:37] rushfan: emerge -e world
[04:25:47] rushfan: Recompiling the compiler
[04:25:53] clever[rev]: yeah
[04:26:08] clever[rev]: with lfs you make a symlink at /tools/ pointing to /newroot/tools/
[04:26:08] rushfan: Or one time I broke mythtv. Permanently
[04:26:17] rushfan: Everythign worked but mythtv cause of some odd Qt anomoly.
[04:26:22] clever[rev]: then you build everything needed to compile with --prefix=/tools/
[04:26:28] rushfan: IT was a problem with GCC flags or something
[04:26:36] clever[rev]: then chroot into /newroot/ and rebuild everything including the compiler normaly
[04:26:41] rushfan: clever[rev]: Ive thought about trying lfs but never had the time

[05:46:13] hobophobe: Or will it just not be viewable via firewire, only 'copy freely' channels?
[05:46:23] iamlindoro: No. Copy once allows for a personal archival copy... besides, myth doesn't have any DRM elements
[05:46:34] iamlindoro: You can record when it's set to copy once
[05:46:41] hobophobe: Ok
[05:47:31] hobophobe: Are generally only HD channels available over the firewire, or all channels it can tune (except copy never)?
[05:47:56] J-e-f-f-A: hobophobe: That depends on your provider...
[05:48:14] hobophobe: Yes
[05:48:47] hobophobe: Charter's website says they comply with the FCC to provide firewire and stick to the 5C guidelines... hmm
[05:49:28] iamlindoro: hobophobe: In general you will only ever get network TV over firewire
[05:49:41] iamlindoro: there are some exceptions, but that's the most most people ever get
[05:49:56] hobophobe: Ah, ok.
[05:49:59] iamlindoro: Otherwise we'd all be using firewire
[05:49:59] J-e-f-f-A: hobophobe: It's a good chance that at least the local channels (both sd and HD) are in the clear, but most everything else is likely to be encrypted. But you don't know until you try...
[05:50:19] J-e-f-f-A: Yeah, just like iamlindoro said... ;-)
[05:51:10] hobophobe: Yeah, my brother just got a hauppauge hvr 1800 and so we're gonna swap his SD box for an HD box, just trying to get an idea of what to expect (and figure if I need to order another rs232 cable, or a firewire cable, etc.)
[05:51:56] iamlindoro: You know you don't use a cable box for ATSC, right?
[05:52:10] hobophobe: ah
[05:52:19] hobophobe: so I should already just plug in direct?
[05:52:25] iamlindoro: getting an HD box will only be good for watching TV off the box, no good to myth
[05:52:46] iamlindoro: hobophobe: Yes. That's the only way ATSC works, either straight QAM (no box) or OTA
[05:53:24] J-e-f-f-A: hobophobe: That might work – again, depending on the provider... I myself have a rooftop antenna for my atsc tuners — I get all the major networks, including the sub-channels, I get like 22 channels...
[05:53:54] hobophobe: but I'd still need a box to record the SD digital channels, eh?
[05:54:12] iamlindoro: No, can tune those via analog
[05:54:38] hobophobe: oh, so just a splitter and no cable box at all?
[05:54:39] iamlindoro: well, basic ones anyway
[05:54:48] iamlindoro: if you get extended cable, yes, keep a basic SD box
[05:54:52] hobophobe: ok
[05:54:57] J-e-f-f-A: With comcast you can probably tune them via analog, for now at least, but as they transition over to 100% digital, that will go away.
[05:54:58] iamlindoro: ie, HBO, cinemax, etc.
[05:55:24] hobophobe: splitter is gonna kill the signal :/
[05:55:53] J-e-f-f-A: Just like cell phones transitioned from Analog to Digital, cable companies are now doing the same. (At least 3x as many channels possible with the switch...)

[06:46:50] jhulst: It'll probably be sitting in my "server room" anyways, so not much use for the IR Receiver

[06:52:47] EnderTheThird: I have several hundred feet of cat5e cable yet
[06:53:14] monkeypet: jhulst: i am wondering if i can use the existing phone wiring for ethernet... I don't use the phone lines anyways.

[06:53:47] jhulst: monkeypet: I don't think there is enough wires for cat5
[06:53:56] EnderTheThird: You could use ethernet over your AC wiring.
[06:54:06] iamlindoro: jhulst: If you think that's bad, try coming home and finding that the dog has escaped and eaten most of the cables on your mythbox, including the cables for your speakers that run mostly through the wall except on that one spot on the floorboard... and she chewed those in half too
[06:54:10] iamlindoro: That was my today
[06:54:20] monkeypet: EnderTheThird: Haha, i picked up a spool of 1000' cat5e from a yard sale.. wwried up my old house like a mofo... then moved..
[06:54:29] jhulst: And that's one of the reasons a dog will never set foot in my house
[06:54:31] iamlindoro: I spent five hours tearing everything back out of the wall and reinstalling speaker wire in the wall.
[06:55:08] EnderTheThird: I think I picked up 1000' back then too, but I just never got around to using the whole damned thing.
[06:55:14] iamlindoro: Although in her defense, my cabling has never been more organized thn it is tonight
[06:55:23] jhulst: iamlindoro: :)

[06:55:48] jhulst: Hows the dog feeling? :)
[06:56:00] monkeypet: iamlindoro: I have so many cables and shiate lying around.. i am glad I have not pets... only kids.
[06:56:04] iamlindoro: OK so far... hopefully she didn't swallow any wire, just chewed
[06:56:20] EnderTheThird: I need a pet so I have a reason to redo all my shit cabling jobs, heh.
[06:56:26] iamlindoro: I was angry, but scared for her too because it's speaker wire so lots of firbous little copper barbs
[06:56:26] monkeypet: iamlindoro: I keep everything in my man-cave...
[06:56:43] iamlindoro: er fibrous
[06:57:17] EnderTheThird: No magnetic metals in there, is there?
[06:57:27] EnderTheThird: Keep her away from your harddrives if there is, heh.
[06:57:47] iamlindoro: monkeypet: hehe, I have a very modern design sense and am a perfectionist... everything had to go in the walls, be out of sight, etc... just never got around to putting a new floorboard down at the sliding door to cover the cables running there
[06:58:28] iamlindoro: This week has been disaster-related myth improvement week
[06:58:30] EnderTheThird: I've done an awful job with my cable management. I thought I was getting new carpet here soon, so I never bothered.
[06:59:04] iamlindoro: first my MythVideo 2 TB array died... and got replaced with a new, more redundant 3 TB array... at the cost of all my videos
[06:59:12] iamlindoro: Then this little incident
[06:59:20] EnderTheThird: 3 TB? holy shit
[06:59:24] monkeypet: iamlindoro: who needs redundancy... psf..
[06:59:33] EnderTheThird: iamlindoro: you make me feel like less of a man
[06:59:42] iamlindoro: monkeypet: Heck, I* had* redundancy, but it doesn't help when you blow two drives at once
[07:00:03] EnderTheThird: That's hose you. I need to do some back-up work here.
[07:00:08] EnderTheThird: *that'll
[07:00:18] iamlindoro: There's just no cheap way to back up that much stuff
[07:00:34] monkeypet: iamlindoro: Next array I am building, i am just going to concatenate the fs, so if i lose one drive, i don't lose everything.
[07:00:46] EnderTheThird: I have ~600GB of media storage (half used) and don't have a backup solution in place at the moment.  :-/
[07:00:48] iamlindoro: So it came back bigger and safer, and I've decided it will *only* hold HD media, and I'm not transcoding it down any more

[07:30:35] iamlindoro: EnderTheThird: It may just be my recent experiences speaking, but believe me when I say that it hurts to lose a big array full of two years worth of dvd rips
[07:30:37] EnderTheThird: Yeah, I'd probably have to resize partitions, transfer out of LVM onto that partition, then setup the RAID and go from there.
[07:30:50] iamlindoro: EnderTheThird: Well, not in that order

[07:32:24] jhulst: iamlindoro: Doesn't look like that does Jumbo Frames, will that make a large difference?
[07:33:23] EnderTheThird: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136151 Hmmm, sounds interesting with the variable speed.

[07:33:57] iamlindoro: jhulst: Unless every device on your network can do jumbo frames, they're useless to you and can have unexpected and bad side effects... but last time I worked with the 16 port version of that same switch, it did support Jumbo
[07:35:01] iamlindoro: You just go into the web management for the switch and turn them on, and can actuall specify frame size manually
[07:35:08] iamlindoro: er actually
[07:35:19] iamlindoro: Up to some obscene and useless amount
[07:35:33] jhulst: This saysa no jumbo frames, http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30040/51/, hmm
[07:36:11] EnderTheThird: Damned miniATX mobo. I'd have to get an add-in SATA card to do that shit.
[07:36:23] iamlindoro: Dunno why the 16 would have features the 8 would lack, but I suppose it's possible
[07:36:25] jhulst: /s/saysa/says
[07:36:44] iamlindoro: ah, it atually says exactly that
[07:36:52] iamlindoro: that it's on the 16/24/48, but not the 8... hmm
[07:37:07] iamlindoro: anyway, all the same, you don't need jumbo frames to have a good gig-e network
[07:37:20] iamlindoro: That switch without Jumbo will still outperform any of those other two
[07:37:48] jhulst: iamlindoro: sounds good, thanks for your help with it, sounds like you know what you're talking about :)
[07:38:39] iamlindoro: jhulst: Thanks... have bought a switch or two in my days, that's for sure... from cheap to obscene... really though, if it's for a home network, you can take a deep breath and get a decent, reliable, cheap switch, it's really ok
[07:39:08] iamlindoro: That d-link will work fine for copying files, playing HD across the network, etc... more than enough, really
[07:39:43] iamlindoro: Now, if you want to build your own server room for a bank, we'll have a serious talk, but for purposes of #mythtv-users, D-link will do the job :)
[07:40:40] iamlindoro: Making the mistake of turning on jumbo on a not-totally-jumbo network had the effect of turning me into a crying, fetal-positioned little girl as the network did strange and crazy things around me
[07:40:46] EnderTheThird: Do you know if a 5400 rpm drive could cut it for Myth?
[07:40:55] iamlindoro: EnderTheThird: Sure

[07:41:23] iamlindoro: The SD tuners Hardware encoders?
[07:41:40] EnderTheThird: This WD drive has a variable speed, but I'm hesitant to get it to save money and sound if the speed won't cut it.

[07:54:43] EnderTheThird: I'm wondering if it's because the CPU isn't running at normal bus speed and if that's throwing off the timing, but it wasn't always like that.
[07:54:50] iamlindoro: Yes, could use cron
[07:55:02] EnderTheThird: NTP server has the right time, it's just not syncing often enough.
[07:55:10] iamlindoro: Heck, you can have it sync every few minutes if you want

[07:56:46] iamlindoro: do hwclock --systohc
[07:57:21] iamlindoro: Guess if you are worried about it you can script the ntp update, then hwclock --systohc, but probably better to find out why it's drifting in the first place
[07:57:23] EnderTheThird: ok, now it's the correc tme.
[07:57:51] iamlindoro: Or just keep an eye on it and see if it drifts by some predictable amount
[07:58:06] EnderTheThird: Yeah. I have the CPU (Core 2 Duo) running a slower BUS speed because I didn't want to get a new graphics card and RAM when I bought the CPU, so I could keep my AGP card and RAM and whatnot
[07:58:17] EnderTheThird: Bad idea now that I think about it, but it only cost $40 for the mobo.
[07:58:22] iamlindoro: If it's a few minutes a day, it's one thing... if a few hours from now you're off by exactly 30 or 60 minutes, that's a little more suspicious and likely to be a sotware issue
[07:58:37] iamlindoro: EnderTheThird: Yeah, might be

[09:33:32] lwizardl: whats the most supported remote for mythtv/linux?
[09:34:47] jhulst: People seem to like the Harmony remotes, you really can program most any to work
[09:35:28] lwizardl: well my ati remote refuses to work so I figure I'll just get one that fully works
[09:35:52] jhulst: lwizardl: What ati remote? How does it refuse
[09:36:41] lwizardl: jhulst, came with my 8500DV AIW Radeon. its a USB dongle reciever remote
[09:36:56] lwizardl: nothing responds on the box
[09:37:05] lwizardl: doesn't even move the mouse
[09:37:49] jhulst: So you're looking for a receiver more than an actual remote
[09:38:20] lwizardl: the whole package receiever & remote
[09:39:12] jhulst: lwizardl: http://www.lirc.org/ should have everything you need to know
[09:43:32] jhulst: lwizardl: Have you spent time trying to get your current remote to work, installed lirc? Done some debugging and what not?
[09:43:48] mzb: lwizardl: the "most" supported receiver would have to be one of the homebrew serials ;)
[09:44:15] lwizardl: jhulst, yes been trying to get a fully working myth box for about 3 months now
[09:44:30] jhulst: Or you could always go with a wireless keyboard, that's how I use mine
[09:44:54] lwizardl: mzb, i have a serial LIRC with dual sensors
[09:45:27] mzb: dual sensors, or dual receivers?
[09:45:43] lwizardl: mzb, but all that one does is allow my soon to e mythtv box to change channels on 2 external devices
[09:45:51] lwizardl: *be
[09:46:21] mzb: sounds like a transmitter to me :) (ie. blaster)
[09:47:31] lwizardl: yes ir blaster
[09:47:35] mzb: ok
[09:47:46] lwizardl: paid $13 for it
[09:48:37] mzb: I'm slowly retiring all my "inbuilt" receivers with homebrews, so that the remotes become user(or location)-centric rather than tuner-centric
[09:49:15] mzb: I find serial receivers much nicer to work with (in the fullness of time)
[09:50:08] lwizardl: but what I'm trying to do is find a working remote that I can use on my mythtv box (currently ubuntu based) since both my remotes that came with my tuner cards don't have options for them and my ati remote seems to be not supported
[09:50:31] jhulst: lwizardl: You need a receiver first
[09:51:09] lwizardl: I want to be able to change the channels, start/stop recordings etc from the remote like any other dvr

[09:52:13] mzb: as jhulst says, it all comes down to your receiver
[09:53:04] mzb: if you have a receiver that's built into a tuner card (or box, etc), then you are most likely restricted to using the remote that matches it
[09:54:09] lwizardl: well the tuner ones are plug in sensors that plug into the card
[09:54:31] mzb: a serial receiver, on the other hand, can be built which will be (pretty much) unrestricted and allow you to use (almost) any remote (that matches the frequency of the IR receiver + circuit)
[09:54:46] lwizardl: like i have a Kworld ATSC 110 card & a TwinHan 103g DVB card
[09:55:00] mzb: lwizardl: I'm aware of that ... hence my comments about the receiver options
[09:55:28] lwizardl: mzb, i know I was just stating what mine was :)
[09:55:44] mzb: with a "card based" receiver it's unlikely that you'll be able to (properly) use a "foreign" remote
[09:56:35] mzb: apart from your time, the most expensive part for a homebrew receiver would be the IR receiver module (prob ~<au$5)
[09:57:05] jhulst: lwizardl: where di you get a transmitter for $13? :)
[09:57:13] lwizardl: and what about US?

[10:02:47] lwizardl: jhulst, also here is the guy that was selling them on ebay http://www.irblaster.info/index.html
[10:03:24] mzb: can't find one on dse.com.au but I think they used to sell them

[10:03:39] mzb: I'm sure you could find something similar anywhere in the world
[10:03:53] jhulst: Unfortunately, no serial port on my box
[10:04:50] lwizardl: jhulst, ah so you would need either a USB or USB to Serial Adapter
[10:06:13] lwizardl: mzb, i'm sure either radioshack, http://www.mcmelectronics.com/ or www.mouser.com would have all the parts I would need to build it
[10:06:26] mzb: most likely
[10:07:05] lwizardl: maybe I'll make that my weekend project
[10:07:20] mzb: very simple to build ... *can* be slightly harder to configure (not by much;) ... but better result, more portable, and *VERY* sensitive
[10:07:22] lwizardl: and the serial port recievers are fully supported
[10:07:28] mzb: absolutely

[10:08:00] lwizardl: how can i find out what remotes are compatible with this

[10:22:16] mzb: two tuners
[10:22:48] punkcut: Can I just split a main coax input line?
[10:23:39] punkcut: And also wouldnt that mean I need two sound cards too?
[10:24:00] lwizardl: punkcut, when you split a coax line using a spliter you lose some quality if you wanted to go line1 into the mythtv and line2 to tv then sure that would be easy
[10:24:20] punkcut: True but I would like to do this all from within MythTV
[10:24:46] lwizardl: then yes you need either a dual tuner card or two separate tuner cards
[10:25:03] punkcut: and 2 sound cards too?
[10:25:20] lwizardl: I would think you tuner card would handle that by itself
[10:25:50] lwizardl: thought output to speakers I would think you could only get one set of sound at a time being displayed
[10:26:04] punkcut: Yes but does that affect the recording also?
[10:26:22] punkcut: For example, Tuner 1 is recording channel 1 and Tuner 2 is playing Channel 2 to the TV
[10:26:22] lwizardl: kinda like how when you do picture in picture on tv sets you get audio on the main but only a picture on the smaller one
[10:26:32] punkcut: would both have audio?
[10:26:41] lwizardl: i would think yes
[10:26:55] punkcut: Thanks, one more question

[10:27:07] lwizardl: *because

[10:37:26] mzb: works *GREAT* for me btw :)
[10:37:58] mzb: although I'd have to say that if you wan't convenience .... don't compress :)) ... just buy a bigger drive :)
[10:38:25] mzb: (dvd burning is so simple with mpeg2 recordings:)
[10:40:16] MilhousePunkRock: mzb: For now, I won't be archiving much anyway. Once those shows we record (currently with an ancient VCR) have been watched, I'll probably just delete them...

[10:41:06] MilhousePunkRock: And I just looked in the log, you were involved in that initial conversation... ;) [Sa Okt 27 2007] [15:14:53] <mzb_d800> I recently watched a 12 hr show (?) [ Bathurst = car race ] at 95% playback ... most enjoyable :)
[10:41:19] mzb: :))
[10:41:24] mzb: yep
[10:41:37] mzb: yet to record that to dvd ... still thinking about it :)
[10:42:02] mzb: got the (4) recordings lying around somewhere (I hope)
[10:42:12] MilhousePunkRock: mzb: I only have one, since the cat does not care much about TV... Since I need to get up early on weekdays, we usually don't watch TV after 10 in the evening, so Prison Break, for example, gets recorded...

[10:43:14] mzb: but I have a 24yo that likes netball, and a 2.5yo that likes ... *everything* ;)
[10:43:20] mzb: err. which question?
[10:43:30] MilhousePunkRock: What's the "repeat" setting for lirc that gives continuous keypresses when a key is held down? For the volume buttons, for example
[10:45:24] mzb: eg:
[10:45:26] mzb: repeat = 3
[10:45:28] mzb: ?
[10:45:38] mzb: also depends on the remote
[10:45:53] mzb: (ie. assuming it sends out repeat commands ... afaik)
[10:47:21] MilhousePunkRock: mzb: The lower the number, the faster the repeat, right?
[10:47:37] mzb: I *think* so
[10:50:45] MilhousePunkRock: mzb: Where does it belong in the key section, if that matters?
[10:51:21] mzb: order is not specific

[10:51:43] mzb: begin
[10:51:43] mzb: prog = mythtv

[10:51:43] mzb: config = Right
[10:51:43] mzb: delay = 3
[10:51:44] mzb: repeat = 3
[10:51:46] mzb: end
[10:52:01] MilhousePunkRock: what's the "delay" for?
[10:52:46] mzb: can't remember :)
[10:53:17] mzb: there's also a "remote" keyword, so you can have the same button names, but different remotes
[10:54:06] mzb: see: http://www.lirc.org/html/configure.html

[16:29:13] Smoerrebroed: Sorry, I don't know the card exactly.

[16:43:55] Smoerrebroed: So anyway, if your card does use the bt878 chipset, try the following:

[16:44:21] canute: ???
[16:44:54] Smoerrebroed: modprobe bttv card=16
[16:45:23] Smoerrebroed: Click http://pastebin.ca/ and see what happens...
[16:47:40] Smoerrebroed: Cause that should be the correct driver for your card. The problem could be that this subtype (variant) is not supported by the driver in which case you might also want to try card=x with 0 <= x <= 149
[16:49:04] canute: how to ensure that card is the right one??
[16:49:19] canute: i did what u said..

[19:02:34] Saviq: it creates devices called 'digital', 'analog' etc. so that you don't have to remember what's your hw settings
[19:02:44] alexvd: Saviq: ahhhh
[19:02:46] Saviq: that's normal
[19:03:05] Saviq: but still – you need to put the proper device names there
[19:04:10] alexvd: Saviq: well I am 99% sure its 0,1 because I only have two devices and the first 0,0 is analog and it works fine. /dev/dsp vs /dev/adsp
[19:04:43] Saviq: you shouldn't use /dev/dsp nor /dev/adsp
[19:04:51] Saviq: they're oss, not alsa
[19:05:01] Saviq: the adsp thing is a wrapper
[19:05:15] Saviq: myth does recognize things like 'alsa:digital' in it's config

[19:07:17] Saviq: does your amplifier report that it sees the digital audio at all?

[19:09:25] alexvd: well when I pull the toslink cable I see the red light. I have to manually select the digital audio out to enable it. Its hard for me to tell unless something is playing
[19:10:10] alexvd: Saviq: So I will need to route all audio analog and digital through the toslink
[19:10:49] Saviq: yes, you should be able to set 'alsa:digital' in both mythtv's audio fields

[22:25:23] cafuego: bahadunn: More like distributing software of at the very least dubious legal status.

[23:37:35] J-e-f-f-A: That was for my TI 99/4a ... ;-)
[23:37:36] EnderTheThird: i remember paying 200–300 for my first DVD burner
[23:37:45] blackest: hmm anyone remember the command to restart mysql
[23:37:48] EnderTheThird: or was it a CD burner? wow
[23:38:06] blackest: i paid £150 for a 2nd hand 4meg stick of ram
[23:38:11] Saviq: blackest: /etc/init.d/mysql restart
[23:39:17] blackest: thanks Saviq
[23:39:24] Saviq: np
[23:39:37] blackest: unfortunately the backend still isnt restarting :(
[23:39:47] blackest: but its not the database
[23:41:07] mindframe_ (mindframe_!n=mindfram@ip72-207-244-33.br.br.cox.net) has quit (Remote closed the connection)
[23:41:18] EnderTheThird: what's the error?
[23:41:59] EnderTheThird: maybe it's a wrong IP somewhere. don't have your mysql bound to the wrong IP or anything, do you?
[23:43:02] cpare_: When I scan for channels, am I supposed to see something in the window behind the 'scanning' box – mine is blank while scanning, an after...
[23:43:38] cpare_: also – the suggestion was to try QAM-256 – where is that specified? Under General?
[23:44:00] blackest: its not doing a thing i try to restart and it does nothing
[23:44:16] J-e-f-f-A: cpare_: I don't think you'll have that option – that's for digital channels, and I think your tuner is just analog.
[23:44:35] blackest: sudo /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend restart
[23:44:36] cpare_: yep
[23:44:41] cpare_: thanks
[23:44:56] cpare_: what about the scanning portion?
[23:45:22] blackest: i found scanning did it all pretty much automagically
[23:45:38] J-e-f-f-A: cpare_: I don't think anything shows on the screen while it's scanning (as far as video itself is concerned). But I've only scanned for digital OTA channels, so I can't say for sure.
[23:45:39] blackest: have you tried watching with kaffiene?
[23:46:02] Yahooadam: justinh: Yahooadam: no guide data after 00:00 Jan 1st
[23:46:06] Yahooadam: umm ... wtf?
[23:46:10] cpare_: thanks
[23:46:11] justinh: Yahooadam: yeah
[23:46:19] cpare_: I will try scanning each of the types
[23:46:29] cpare_: and see what I get
[23:46:35] blackest: if kaffeine pulls in some channels then mythtv should as well
[23:46:38] justinh: Yahooadam: they're having issues for one reason or another & it's not likely to be fixed til they go back to work. or something
[23:46:41] Yahooadam: you mean they havent updated it, or theyve stopped giving it out?
[23:46:41] J-e-f-f-A: cpare_: You tried "US-Cable", right?
[23:46:54] Yahooadam: ummm
[23:46:55] Yahooadam: ok
[23:46:58] cpare_: Yeah, that was the first one
[23:47:05] Yahooadam: so what do we do?
[23:47:19] cpare_: I am going to try each option now
[23:47:52] cpare_: YahooAdam – I signed up for Schedule Direct – just $20
[23:48:11] cpare_: seemed fair :)
[23:48:20] Yahooadam: yeah, if your in the USA ....
[23:48:23] justinh: Yahooadam: the real reason for there being no guide data after that point isn't known
[23:48:41] cpare_: good point

[23:54:05] justinh: wait til I've started a thread saying how I've got a not-for-profit listings service waiting in the wings
