[00:00:34] | hadees: | so i have a pvr-500, pvr-150, two AirStart-5000 and i was thinking about adding a couple of firewire cable boxes. I cpu is probably going to be a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ and for hard drives i should have about 8 279.48 gig (although i don't think all that space will go to mythtv) in a 3ware 9500S-8. I was wondering if this would work ok or if there would be any possible bottle necks |
[00:02:52] | hadees: | I would think the disk is the real bottle neck but with the raid array i think it should be ok |
[00:04:37] | hadees: | i should probably add that it has to be a dual frontend/backend and it might be serving up another two frontends |
[00:05:27] | hadees: | its unlikely everything will be on at the same time and all the recording slots will be full but i would like to build incase that happens |
[00:05:41] | blackest (blackest!n=john@cpc1-linc8-0-0-cust127.nott.cable.ntl.com) has quit (Success)
[00:05:55] | Tanthrix: | hadees: Why would you possibily need 7 tuners? |
[00:06:44] | Tanthrix: | I don't think once in my entire 3 years of using myth have I even had one opportunity when I would have needed even 3... |
[00:06:53] | hadees: | Tanthrix, multiple people watching live tv frontends 2 or 3 plus recording |
[00:07:08] | hadees: | i tend to also record a lot more then i watch |
[00:07:21] | hadees: | i like to be able to choose |
[00:07:39] | ShockValue: | with 7 tuners and intelligent scheduling, you could probably record every show on TV as long as you didnt need to watch the episodes as they aired |
[00:07:39] | ready (ready!i=radical@source.sitea.cc) has joined #mythtv-users

[00:10:52] | ShockValue: | damn it thats annoying... the only ecrypted HD channel at this point on my system is NBC. of course, all the new shows that I like to watch are on NBC... |
[00:11:02] | hadees: | i probably could drop the pvr-150 and still be fine |
[00:11:21] | opello: | is there any way to tail /dev/vbi0 while a show is recording on "encoder 1"? i keep getting vbi read timeouts |
[00:11:40] | ShockValue: | i find that after a month or so of constant recording, i have no need for "live tv".. or at least, its rare. |
[00:11:44] | maejrep: | hey, got a question ... myth records shows fine, and i can play them back in mplayer. But if I try to play them back from within mythfrontend, this is what I see: //dev001.mybdev.com/~jhansche/screenshot-20070928@200350.png" rel="nofollow">http://dev001.mybdev.com/~jhansche/screenshot . . . 8@200350.png |
[00:11:53] | maejrep: | any suggestions? :/ |
[00:11:57] | hadees: | ShockValue, is it really encrypted? because i have had channels that mythtv thinks are encrypted but if you turn off "view only unencrypted channels" or what ever that option is in mythtv-setup then they work fine |
[00:12:21] | ShockValue: | hadees: yeah, its the only channel withe the 5C flag |

[00:13:40] | hadees: | ShockValue, try using mplayer to view the channel |
[00:13:58] | maejrep: | ShockValue: that is supposed to be fullscreen. I think compiz is making gnome-terminal stay on top |
[00:14:04] | ShockValue: | hadees: firewire times out trying to see anything on that channel. i get 0 length recordings |
[00:14:06] | maejrep: | err, gnome-panel |
[00:14:13] | hadees: | ShockValue, oh its firewire |

[00:15:15] | maejrep: | sure |
[00:15:34] | maejrep: | but it was working before i upgraded to 0.20.2 |
[00:15:53] | ShockValue: | oh hmm. |

[00:20:36] | maejrep: | i'm sure it was something in the 0.20.2 upgrade. it was working to let me tune QAM channels from my channels.conf file, but I upgraded so I could use schedules direct and map the channels to guide data. and after that, I haven't been able to watch recordings or live tv in myth |

[07:41:31] | jwilliams: | Hello all. I have been Googling for the answer to this question, to no avail and I hoping someone can shed some light on it. |
[07:42:09] | jwilliams: | I am trying to set up MythWeb. I've installed rpms from ATRpms on Fedora 7 and read the installation docs on the main mythtv site |
[07:42:49] | jwilliams: | But I'm getting the dreaded message "Cannot connect to backend server on XXXX:6543. Is it running?" |

[08:37:08] | anykey_: | which one do you have? c7? |

[08:37:51] | anykey_: | oh ok |
[08:38:07] | anykey_: | I like it because linuxBIOS runs on it, and it's small and it doesn't consume that much power |
[08:38:18] | juski: | linuxbios is very limited |
[08:38:32] | juski: | not really suited to anything which needs VGA |
[08:38:45] | anykey_: | sure about that? |
[08:38:55] | juski: | that was the case last time I looked |
[08:39:22] | juski: | plus it doesn't take _that_ long to load a kernel, so it's not saving you much time |
[08:39:52] | anykey_: | I don't know about the epias, but the "normal" pc motherboards have a crap bios that is taking ages to scan for hardware |
[08:40:14] | anykey_: | and it's just not pretty if you see "ASUS" when you want to watch TV ;) |
[08:40:18] | juski: | my frontend boots over the network in less than a minute |
[08:40:40] | juski: | that's from powerup to mythtv menus |
[08:40:59] | anykey_: | hm ok |
[08:42:13] | anykey_: | what I want to do is integrating the whole hardware into a hifi-system (i.e. inside the equipment). I want to exchange the cd-changer with a normal 5.25" dvd drive, the tapedeck with a VFD... so I just haven't enough spare room for a micro-atx board, which leads me to the epias... |
[08:42:55] | juski: | you know you can get mini-itx boards that take real CPUs don't you? |
[08:43:02] | anykey_: | yeah I know |
[08:43:10] | anykey_: | but they're quite expensive |
[08:43:45] | juski: | after my experience with this board, my next frontend is very likely going to be a mac mini. not be hiding that away, of that you can be sure! |
[08:44:46] | anykey_: | if you say the epia isn't able to play sdtv without xvmc, does it play xvid at sdtv resolution with/without xvmc? |
[08:44:51] | juski: | if you want to do HDTV, I strongly recommend you buy something with a real CPU |
[08:44:55] | juski: | anykey_: xine does |
[08:45:03] | anykey_: | internal player doesn't? |
[08:45:58] | juski: | I only have trouble with mythfrontend's Internal player in later versions of minimyth. like I said it's not that high cpu usage is holding it back. when it's fine, cpu usage is like 40%. when cpu usage is _lower_ (!) playback pauses every 10 secs or so |
[08:46:17] | xris: | juski: even my quad core has trouble with HD... granted, I have interlacing turned on, and am resizing to non-HD res for display |

[11:56:15] | Hoxzer: | Guys, We need to unite our knownlage in order to figure out how to tell mythfrontend to use certain lircd |
[11:56:37] | Hoxzer: | Because some people have multiple IR receivers in dual headed systems |
[12:21:13] | siXy: | Hoxzer: there are several different ways to do it. |
[12:22:08] | Hoxzer: | Yeah, but since some people have remotes that send same singals as another remote does hence that people can't use "remote =" option in lircrc file |
[12:22:40] | siXy: | Hoxzer: what is it *exactly* that you are trying to do? |
[12:23:23] | Hoxzer: | Two remotes, two receivers, two frontends. One remote/receiver for each frontends. One backend |
[12:23:56] | siXy: | identical remotes or not? |
[12:24:31] | Hoxzer: | NOt identical but they have buttons that send same singals |
[12:24:54] | Hoxzer: | for example "up" in one remote is "0" in another |
[12:26:33] | siXy: | run mode2 on each and find out if they have unique codes for each button (they should do) |
[12:26:40] | siXy: | if so its very easy |
[12:27:14] | siXy: | it only gets hard if you are trying to do it with identical rmeotes |
[12:27:17] | Hoxzer: | I tested it with IRW |
[12:27:43] | siXy: | test with mode2 |
[12:29:07] | Hoxzer: | Ok..., btw is it normal that receivers taht come with TV-cards report different codes than serial receiver ? |
[12:29:22] | siXy: | if they are different remotes then they are unlikely to transmit the same codes, but there is sometimes overlap |
[12:29:34] | laga: | just patch the source to use different lircd sockets? |
[12:30:42] | siXy: | laga: thats what I did, but I had identical remotes. if your remotes are different you probably only need a well-written lircd.conf and lircrc file(s) |

[14:11:52] | Aval0n-: | then your cards are not setup correctly |
[14:11:57] | Aval0n-: | just wondering, |
[14:11:57] | waldo: | i'm sure the card isn't in use and that the mythtv user is in the video group |
[14:12:11] | Aval0n-: | why on god's green earth are you running the 64-bit version |
[14:12:18] | waldo: | .. card work fine with kaffeine |
[14:12:28] | waldo: | why not ? |
[14:12:39] | Aval0n-: | lacking driver support? |
[14:13:12] | Aval0n-: | it's not like you are going to notice a speed increase with a mythbox |
[14:13:14] | waldo: | what drivers ? nvidia is the only driver i need binary and it is available in64bit |
[14:13:23] | waldo: | dvb modules and such i build myself |
[14:13:32] | Aval0n-: | well the drivers for your dvb card sure aren't treating you very nice are they |
[14:13:59] | waldo: | the dvb cards work FINE in kaffeine |

[14:14:33] | Aval0n-: | you probably have them setup wrong in mythtv-setup |
[14:14:35] | waldo: | end xine works too |

[18:16:13] | in8: | hey guys... this is by no means my first install of myth, but I'm having issues with the latest install. seems I cannot watch recorded programs from my remote backend (live tv is ok) and recorded shows on my laptop from the master backend work as well as recorded on the backend. the funny part is the previews display fine soon as I click on the program I get a bank screen for 10 seconds then back to the menu... I've been googling this |
[18:16:14] | in8: | for days (I've never run into this problem before) can someone point me in the right direction? |

[18:52:07] | AndyCap: | Heh, probably. Just didn't think you could get the keyboard off of interrupt 1 |
[18:52:17] | Dagmar: | It's on 2 |
[18:52:25] | Dagmar: | I *think* |
[18:52:36] | Dagmar: | But you can definitely put things ON that interrupt as well |
[18:52:47] | AndyCap: | 2 is the daisychained pic |
[18:52:57] | jarle_: | Dagmar: I was under the impression that the difference was very little, maybe the cifs was more effective than smbfs... |
[18:52:58] | Dagmar: | Okay must be 1 then |
[18:53:00] | AndyCap: | so 2 moved to 9 and is the display interrupt |
[18:53:15] | AndyCap: | jarle_: the big difference is the samba unix extensions |
[18:53:21] | Dagmar: | jerle: Ownership and permissions granularity is greater with CIFS |
[18:53:31] | AndyCap: | jarle_: which bring you the worst of both NFS and SMB |
[18:53:35] | Dagmar: | jerle: With SMB you are kinda stuck with the file permission flexibility of Windows 98 |
[18:53:51] | Dagmar: | With CIFS you can actually have the things map to sane and useful groups and ownership |
[18:54:15] | AndyCap: | only if you run ldap or nis. which sucks for home usage. :) |
[18:54:31] | Dagmar: | It might be annoying stuff but it's at least one-stop-shopping to quiet those whiny windows users |
[18:54:31] | AndyCap: | or you can take the chore of moving UID/GID's around so they match on your machines |
[18:55:03] | jarle_: | changing from cifs to smbfs I got "smbfs: mount_data version 1919251317 is not supported" maybe I'm getting closer to narrowing down the problem.... |
[18:55:30] | Dagmar: | Wildly differing versions of samba perhaps? |
[18:55:33] | AndyCap: | I can't help thinking that the unix extensions must be an enormous security hole waiting to happen, but we'll see |
[18:57:16] | Dagmar: | Same solution set as NFS. |
[18:57:24] | Dagmar: | "Don't use it on a network segment you can't trust" |

[18:59:06] | Dagmar: | AndyCap: Well, that's kinda what they were designed to od |
[18:59:24] | jarle_: | oups! seems like installing the smbfs package also made cifs mounting work! |
[18:59:35] | jarle_: | some strange packaging by ubuntu?? |
[18:59:38] | AndyCap: | Dagmar: yes, and that's the broken part |
[18:59:38] | Dagmar: | Could be |
[18:59:54] | Yahooadam: | w00t |

[19:00:03] | Yahooadam: | ty xris, that _finally_ solved my problem |
[19:00:08] | Dagmar: | AndyCap: See the problem tho is that it means you can't really get cross-platform with the fileshare without that |
[19:00:19] | jarle_: | AndyCap: userland helper? |
[19:00:26] | xris: | Yahooadam: any time mysql starts talking about "corrupt" stuff, you generally just need to repair the table... |
[19:00:29] | AndyCap: | jarle_: like smbmount etc. |
[19:00:42] | Dagmar: | jarle_: yeah like when you run mount -o cifs it actually turns around and looks for mount.cifs and calls that |
[19:00:49] | Yahooadam: | xris – i had repaired it with phpmyadmin, but it would corrupt every time mythfilldatabase ran |
[19:00:49] | xris: | optimize_mythdb does that for you (easier to tell people to just run that than explain how to log into the mysql cli and run certain commands) |
[19:00:51] | Dagmar: | You can drive people mad knowing that |

[19:01:22] | Dagmar: | jarle_: SOME lunatics like to make use of symlinks in or about that area. |
[19:01:30] | AndyCap: | Dagmar: it worked fine cross platform before. this just stuff unixisms down the CIFS pipe. |
[19:01:35] | Dagmar: | This is not much different from operating small fires in or about one's underpants. |
[19:01:35] | AndyCap: | and it seems unsafe |
[19:02:14] | Dagmar: | Well of course it's less safe since it expands the scope of authority across a network |
[19:02:30] | Dagmar: | Normally you only have to worry about the credential database on the local machine |
[19:03:09] | Dagmar: | ...but if you're say, running a real Kerberos domain (and have signed the requisite documents in your own blood by the light of the full moon) this issue evaporates |
