[00:13:44] abarbaccia: hey all – anybody know why fastforwarding HDTV wouldn't work but SD would work? the backend and frontend are two different units
[00:13:59] abarbaccia: with 10/100 wired network
[00:14:25] kormoc: abarbaccia, and by now you know that we'd tell you to run the frontend in a terminal to get the logging output and have it in a pastebin?
[00:14:43] abarbaccia: which i have... not pastebin yet tho --- hold please ;-)
[00:14:44] nero_ (nero_!n=_nero_@pool-71-168-231-63.cmdnnj.fios.verizon.net) has joined #mythtv-users

[00:15:34] nero: Say, does the creator of the MePo theme frequent here?
[00:16:08] abarbaccia: http://pastebin.ca/490400
[00:18:50] abarbaccia: kormoc — any ideas?
[00:19:58] directhex: nero, yes, he does
[00:20:11] directhex: nero, but not today, by the look of it
[00:20:19] nero: directhex, what is his nick?
[00:21:06] nero: (my wife wont stop giggling about the "fun penguin guy".. his theme has given a huge boost to the WAF here..)
[00:21:12] directhex: zdzisekg
[00:21:45] nero: thanks.. I'll have to thank him the next time I see him around. :)
[00:21:58] directhex: the character is by http://www.glennmelenhorst.com/
[00:22:35] nero: yup.. I saw that from the readme file.. its a nice little theme.. how long has the theming interface supported animations like that?
[00:23:17] SlicerDicer-: does anybody know of svn builds of mythtv .deb style? :)
[00:23:55] directhex: nero, flipbooks? not sure. but watch your cpu usage
[00:24:15] hadees (hadees!n=hadees@pdpc/supporter/sustaining/hadees) has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
[00:24:41] nero: will do.
[00:26:24] directhex: haven't seen him for days now you mention it
[00:27:04] directhex: not since friday anyway
[00:27:41] directhex: nero, if you notice your cpu load is 100% when using the MePo theme, there's a fix
[00:27:50] nero: directhex, I haven't seen that yet..
[00:28:06] directhex: nero, are you using the OpenGL or Qt painter?
[00:28:09] nero: OGL
[00:28:15] nero: and the latest SVN
[00:28:43] directhex: hm. svn might include some limiting code? not sure. at any rate, fire up a frontend, leave it on the root menu, and check your load
[00:29:02] nero: hold on.. giving it a whirl
[00:30:42] directhex: hm, curious. must be a fixed-in-svn thing
[00:31:07] nero: looks like it.. cause that little guy is blinkin at me, and there is no processor usage (or very little)
[00:31:26] nero: well, off to watch a movie.. thanks for the tips directhex .. I'll keep an eye on that processor usage.
[00:32:08] Dave123 (Dave123!n=dave@cpe-66-67-131-67.rochester.res.rr.com) has quit (Remote closed the connection)
[00:32:09] directhex: nero, the problem isn't the flipbook, it's the logo in the bottom left
[00:32:43] nero: ahhhhh..
[00:32:48] nero: well that logo is blinking at me too.. ;)
[00:33:12] nero: bbl
[00:37:47] abarbaccia: what happened with mythweather – msn change their format or something?
[00:38:06] GreyFoxx: yes
[00:38:26] abarbaccia: so whats the plan of action for anyone who knows?
[00:38:55] directhex: GreyFoxx, for the love of god, add it to the topic. it's gone beyond "FAQ"
[00:39:43] GreyFoxx: abarbaccia: There is ongoing discussion on what's gonna happen, but it's likely going to be a revival of the SoC mythweather changes and seperate scripts for pulling data for different parts of the world
[00:40:15] abarbaccia: very interesting – and what about imdb — someone said something about that changing as well?
[00:40:25] Disputin (Disputin!n=disp@c-24-20-6-99.hsd1.mn.comcast.net) has quit (Read error: 113 (No route to host))
[00:40:26] GreyFoxx: not that I'm aware of
[00:40:31] GreyFoxx: and I imported stuff yesterday
[00:40:36] GreyFoxx: but then I run latest svn
[00:40:41] abarbaccia: hurm – musta been a bug on their side then – just heard someone mention it
[00:40:43] GreyFoxx: so if it affects 0.20 I don't know
[00:40:54] abarbaccia: GreyFoxx: do you upgrade every night or something?
[00:41:01] directhex: the imdb importing is a bit off
[00:41:09] GreyFoxx: On average once a week
[00:41:16] Riblet (Riblet!n=ribs@91.84.8.218) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:41:18] GreyFoxx: usually Saturdays, but sometimes more often
[00:41:20] directhex: in 0.20 it fails to get most details. in svn, it misses the director
[00:41:45] GreyFoxx: All I look at usually is the basic description and the cover poster heh
[00:41:57] abarbaccia: yeah, im just about the cover poster
[00:42:03] bieb (bieb!n=me@66-23-224-56.clients.speedfactory.net) has joined #mythtv-users

[00:42:23] hadees (hadees!n=hadees@pdpc/supporter/sustaining/hadees) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:43:00] directhex: the poster download works on 0.20
[00:43:20] kormoc: directhex, what bout the mythweb interface?
[00:43:57] bieb: how processor intensive is MythTV?
[00:44:09] directhex: kormoc, mythweb on 0.20 doesn't allow you to import directly from imdb, i.e. doesn't include poster downloading facilities
[00:44:13] kormoc: bieb, no easy answer
[00:44:16] directhex: bieb, depends on what you're doing
[00:44:21] kormoc: directhex, it does in svn
[00:44:35] directhex: kormoc, yeah. doesn't work right for me though :'(
[00:44:46] kormoc: directhex, same failures as mythvideo?
[00:46:03] bieb: I am going to be building a new system.. I have 2 boards.. An ASUS A8n32sli-deluxe 939 socket and a new Gigabyte m61p-s3 AM2, with onboard video..
[00:46:34] bieb: I realize sli is overkill.. but the board was given to me
[00:46:41] directhex: kormoc, actually, it seems to work today. it didn't used to
[00:47:01] bieb: the Gigabyte has onboard video, which is probably junk for Myth
[00:47:22] directhex: nvidia? should be fine
[00:47:39] bieb: the onboard nvidia should be fine?
[00:48:04] directhex: should think so
[00:48:12] kormoc: hell, the newer intel intigrated gfx supports 1080i under linux fine
[00:48:28] bieb: but it doesnt provide s-video out
[00:48:53] directhex: kormoc, assuming mpeg2
[00:48:59] directhex: bieb, s-video/ ick
[00:49:08] kormoc: directhex, typically that's what it is, for now :P
[00:49:14] Zider: s-video 1080i? I didn't know that worked..
[00:49:32] directhex: kormoc, tell that to the bbc!
[00:49:53] kormoc: Zider, it doesn't
[00:50:23] Zider: kormoc: what would be the highest resolution over s-video?
[00:50:25] kash: svideo has max res of 1024x768
[00:50:33] kash: due to bandwidth limitations
[00:50:47] bieb: ok.. directhex.. what do I need in the video dept? I have the Hauppauge wintv-pvr-500mce OEM
[00:51:11] kormoc: bieb, nvidia 5200 or newer
[00:51:15] directhex: bieb, dual-tuner mpeg2 grabber?
[00:52:37] bieb: Kormoc the onboard nvidia is a geforce 6100
[00:52:54] kormoc: bieb, and as you said above, it doesn't have svideo out
[00:53:21] kormoc: bieb, so you can buy something that is a 5200 or newer with svideo out or use the onboard and not use svideo
[00:53:23] bieb: Directhex.. how do I tell dual?
[00:53:33] kormoc: bieb, the pvr 500 is always dual tuners
[00:53:39] bieb: gotcha
[00:54:14] bieb: the 500 and 150 were recommended, I found the 500 on sale for like $20 more than the 150, so I bought it
[00:54:35] kash: GreyFoxx: i figured as much
[00:54:40] xris: bieb: nice find
[00:54:45] directhex: analog in is outside my zone of competence
[00:54:46] bieb: Kormoc, so svideo is not needed to connect to back to the TV?
[00:54:48] xris: it's usually about $5 more than twice as much
[00:54:53] directhex: bieb, depends on your TV
[00:54:54] kormoc: bieb, depends on your tv
[00:54:59] bieb: ahhh
[00:55:00] kash: but if it's s-video -> RGB, max is 1024x768
[00:55:04] ** xris resists the urge to say "depends on..." **
[00:55:11] directhex: xris, DO EEET!
[00:55:11] Sid`: GreyFoxx: 576 lines
[00:55:14] kash: i have component out, but no tv that uses it
[00:55:21] kash: at least, within range of my frontend
[00:55:22] GreyFoxx: sig: Right
[00:55:39] ** directhex looks at his tv, wonders what the component in connectors are for **
[00:56:00] Zider: GreyFoxx: so there's no real point in outputting anything above 7?? x 576 or something? (can't remember the width)
[00:56:00] kash: you use DVI
[00:56:01] kash: ?
[00:56:08] kash: Zider: correc
[00:56:10] kash: +t
[00:56:11] Zider: 768 perhaps?
[00:56:12] Sid`: 720x576
[00:56:12] GreyFoxx: Zider: Right
[00:56:15] Zider: ah 720
[00:56:32] Sid`: if you use a resolution of 720x576, at least with the nvidia cards, no scaling happens
[00:56:36] Sid`: things look more predictable i've found
[00:56:39] Zider: and my gfx card doesn't wanna output that resolution :P
[00:56:49] GreyFoxx: As much as possible you want to avoid scaling. So if you are analog recording try to record at the same resolution you output, and try to output as close to a proper resolution as possible.
[00:57:01] directhex: kash, i use VGA
[00:57:41] Ribs (Ribs!n=ribs@91.84.8.218) has quit (Read error: 113 (No route to host))

[00:58:06] xris: GreyFoxx: scaling happens all over the place, though. even digital cable tv comes in at weird resolutions like 328x480 (yes, wacky anamorphic)
[00:58:31] thufir007 (thufir007!n=thufir@S01060004e2917d65.vc.shawcable.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:58:39] GreyFoxx: which is why we don't want to add more layers of scalling if we can avoid it :)
[00:59:38] bieb: kormoc, what are some of the best reading/setup docs for Myth? Other than just asking here of course :)
[01:01:11] kormoc: bieb, the offical site, the offical docs, the offical wiki
[01:01:39] bieb: cool
[01:01:41] xris: bieb: jarod wilson's fedora guide is really good, too. a lot of distro-agnostic info
[01:02:16] ** juski can't sleep. replied to http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/269721 in rant mode **
[01:04:12] bieb: short of the standard distro religious war, which distros have most people used and solved issues? I dont want to be the first person to try Myth on X-distro
[01:04:44] juski: bieb: ubuntu isn't a bad choice for mythtv these days.. if a little bloated if all you want is mythtv
[01:04:46] directhex: jarod's guide means there are a lot of fedora users
[01:04:58] cal: why would one have a non-master backend?
[01:05:04] directhex: ubuntu is a popular choice, but throws up atypical errors (mostly because people can't read)
[01:05:09] directhex: cal, more tuners!
[01:05:25] bieb: directhex.. you mean people are supposed to read?
[01:05:40] juski: cal: slave backends can add more tuners than one can physically house in one PC. also give you more CPUs to do processing.. also more storage :)
[01:05:43] GreyFoxx: cal: More tuners, more diskspace, more cpu's to do comflagging/transcoding,etc
[01:05:49] cal: direct: hmm cant you have like 6 tuners in one backend already thou
[01:06:00] juski: bieb: I hope to $deity you're joking
[01:06:01] kormoc: cal, so? 6 isn't always enough
[01:06:08] cal: omg who needs more than 6 =)
[01:06:31] juski: cal: who needs more than TWO?
[01:06:38] juski: :-P
[01:06:41] kormoc: who needs any to be honest :P
[01:06:44] bieb: juski.. yes .. I just forgot to add <sarcasm> </sarcasm> to that one
[01:06:50] cal: juski: thats all i have.. heh
[01:07:37] juski: cal: at xmas I found it necessary to add a slave backend just so I could have 4 tuners without disrupting my existing backend.. just for a while :)
[01:07:59] cal: i think it was cool that i turned my laptop into a wireless cable tv
[01:07:59] kash: poor juski!
[01:08:07] Zider: I can't get decent overscan with 720x576.. have to use 800x600 to get it to fill out the tv screen.. :P
[01:08:12] cal: i mean thats like a new concept.. wireless cablevision... hehe
[01:08:13] Zider: poor me :(
[01:08:22] clever: how do i set mythbackend to be running realtime?
[01:08:25] Zider: I so need a decent gfx card to that box..
[01:08:26] juski: Zider: even with nvidia-settings ?
[01:08:31] kash: clever: in mythtv-setup
[01:08:38] Zider: juski: doesn't work with this old crap carsd
[01:08:41] clever: where in there?
[01:08:43] kash: you need to setuid root the mythbackend
[01:08:52] kash: chmod +S /usr/bin/mythfrontend
[01:08:55] clever: yeah i knew i had to do something from roots end
[01:08:59] juski: why'd anybody want to run mythbackend in realtime?
[01:09:13] cal: i was getting some video freezing ever second or two when on the laptop thou.... over 10mb wireless... is there a way to lower the video quality a bit or something to fix that?
[01:09:21] kash: same reason you wear flame stickers on your sneakers
[01:09:23] clever: chmod: invalid mode: `+S'
[01:09:23] clever: Try `chmod --help' for more information.
[01:09:24] kash: they make you go faster

[04:28:54] wylie: scheduling problem; scheduling working for 3 tuners (two kinds of input), scheduling not working for 2 other tuners (hd inputs; working with live tv) all on same backend).
[04:29:25] wylie: livetv works for all tuners, but shows scheduled on some channels never make it on upcoming recordings
[04:30:19] kormoc: wylie, if it's really a bug, you might want to open a trac ticket and/or post on the dev mailing list. tend to have a better hit/miss ratio that way
[04:30:40] kormoc: wylie, but you're gonna need to gather some proof that something is wrong, logs or the like
[04:30:42] wylie: ya, i know, but trying to figure out what data would be helpful
[04:31:08] wylie: [specifically, any relevant debug data when the scheduling process happens]
[04:33:01] wylie: i had a number of tuners on various backends. a system crashed and i consolidated 3 pvr 250's and 1 hdhomerun (2 tuners) to one powerful enough backend. i had some problems getting the atsc ota channels back up on the hdhomerun, but have that finally cleaned up. all channels work in livetv on all tuners and show proper programming info. the hdhomerun has my hd content (channel 712 for nbc, for e.g.)
[04:33:23] wylie: but when i set stuff to record on 712, for instance, it just never shows up as an upcoming recording
[04:33:33] kormoc: wylie, and you've ran mythfilldatabase and all that jazz?
[04:33:42] wylie: yup, definately
[04:34:04] wylie: too many times, hah. while cleaning up the bogus channels that the qam256 scan comes up with
[04:34:15] ** kormoc nods **
[04:34:42] kormoc: hrm, I guess the query log and the output of the scheduled query would be handy... tho I'm not sure if that would be enough
[04:35:42] wylie: ya, it may be that someone tells me what else i need to provide and i do that after opening the ticket. i could just wipe the inputs again and start clean — it would probably fix it.... but i'm convinced there is a bug somewhere that can be fixed.
[04:35:59] wylie: and simply ignoring it wouldn't fix the problem for others
[04:37:01] wylie: this is the first time i have ever seen scheduling behaviour like this
[04:37:33] wylie: and to be good, i did all of the modification using myth, rather than running off to phpmyadmin/mysql

[07:37:05] sajid: i think im going to save that conversation snippet for when ill be setting up multiple FE's in a month or so
[07:37:16] juski: quick! somebody put it in the wiki!
[07:37:27] sajid: heh
[07:37:27] juski: oh, wait.. it's already there (no doubt)
[07:37:31] sajid: yeah it is
[07:37:36] sajid: i read it there as well earlier, actually
[07:37:43] sajid: your was just much more concise
[07:40:48] juski: directhex: cheaper 'n' mine anyway. damn guzzling car
[07:41:36] directhex: juski, small & japanese. that's how i like 'em!
[07:41:45] juski: does the wiki mention how important it is to have different hostnames for all your mythboxen? dunno how many times I've seen people with duplicate hostnames causing bother. D'UH!
[07:42:33] juski: directhex: girl at work just got a diahatsu caper. shittest 'sports' car EVER
[07:42:43] sajid: i dont remember reading that tidbit, actually, but it doesnt mean it isnt in there
[07:42:51] clever: 1045_20070228210000.nuv: 916 extents found, perfection would be 6 extents
[07:42:52] sajid: it was just a perusal to get an idea of the process
[07:42:56] clever: found a horibly fragmented nuv file
[07:43:03] clever: which isnt in the recorded table in mysql
[07:43:04] x0d_ is now known as x0d
[07:43:08] clever: the lost nuv:P
[07:43:29] clever: ran 'mythtv' directly on it and its playing fine
[07:43:34] clever: episode of mythbusters
[07:43:44] clever: which acording to mythweb i dont have any copys of it
[07:43:45] directhex: juski, it might be a hairdresser car, but i adore the curves on the mazda mx5. the missus wants a honda s2000
[07:44:21] clever: juski: wont the hosts file also do?
[07:44:22] juski: this is in the fscking wiki!
[07:44:32] clever: i do run a dns server but its in cache only mode atm
[07:44:48] juski: there's a reason the field says 'IP ADDRESS'
[07:45:29] clever: doesnt lookup the 'ip' thru dns?
[07:45:43] directhex: why are people obsessive over DNS?
[07:45:51] clever: i was lazy when i made an irc bot in c++ ages ago and it had to take actual ip's because it didnt support dns
[07:45:54] directhex: why would myth go out of its way to bypass unix name resolution & only do DNS?
[07:46:03] Tanthrix: hostnames are trouble!
[07:46:17] Tanthrix: Just another damn thing not to work right.
[07:46:21] clever: lol
[07:46:24] Dagmar: directhex: Huh? Got exactly do you do that?
[07:46:28] Dagmar: s/Got/how/;
[07:46:31] juski: because it's easier than keeping several config files maintained? once you get it working...
[07:46:35] clever: all my linux boxes are on static ip's when at home
[07:46:49] clever: so it doesnt realy matter if i use ip or hostname
[07:46:50] devilsclaw: when i atempt to "watch tv" i get a blank screen, ive tested my video with the comand "mplayer -vo gl2 /dev/video0" and i get flawless performance?
[07:47:04] directhex: Dagmar, i don't know! but nsswitch is meant to take care of name resolution. if DNS happens to be one of the things you have enabled, then good for you
[07:47:23] Tanthrix: devilsclaw: Check your backend log and see what it's telling you when you try and play
[07:47:25] directhex: personally i use wins at home, and ldap at work
[07:47:27] Dagmar: There is only gethostbynam() and gethostbyaddr() last time I checked
[07:47:35] juski: devilsclaw: it's possible you didn't put the right kind of information into mythtv-setup. some error message output will be good if you want anybody to be able to help at all
[07:47:49] juski: backend log output!
[07:47:55] Dagmar: You don't get to pick and choose the mechanism at the application level without being really stupid
[07:48:05] clever: mythbackend -v all
[07:48:10] clever: extra debug output

[07:49:22] Dagmar: or hostname resolution

[07:50:19] xzcvczx: Dagmar: damn may have to turn off the 15microwaves i have cooking my pies at the moment then
[07:50:26] xzcvczx: clever: ah ok cool
[07:50:31] sajid: is 80211g good enough for realtime 720p?
[07:50:41] clever: i also have a cisco switch between the wifi router and the other stuff
[07:50:42] sajid: or is n necessary? (or will that not work either)
[07:50:52] clever: and combined with cacti i can get a bandwidth graph for the wireless
[07:51:05] xzcvczx: i have n in the client but only g in the router unfourtunately
[07:51:06] Tanthrix: Doesn't 1080i MPEG2 usually top out at 15mbps?
[07:51:12] clever: and its allmost allways at 300kbytes/sec usage when watching tv
[07:51:34] clever: my router is bg and my laptop is only b
[07:51:42] juski: Tanthrix: if you even get 15mbps from yout 54g wireless
[07:51:43] sajid: my laptop is G
[07:51:48] juski: solidly
[07:51:53] sajid: the router is as yet unpurchased

[07:52:33] juski: http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Frequently_A . . . dings.27_.3F
[07:52:42] Tanthrix: juski: Yah. 802.11G pretty much tops out at 22 mbps with the best possible conditions, so that is an issue.
[07:52:43] clever: i shut off its dhcp server and set it to an ip in the same lan as the other router
[07:52:50] Dagmar: No.
[07:52:56] sajid: anyone from central jersey here?
[07:52:59] Dagmar: I get momre than 22mbps here
[07:53:00] sajid: by Princeton, perchance?
[07:53:15] juski: Tanthrix: that's shite then. Count me in as a wireless web browser when i get enabled.. but other than that.. blech!
[07:53:19] Tanthrix: Though, looking at my 1080i stuff right now, all of it is around 8mbps, so it would probably work
[07:53:27] clever: connecting the lan ports of the 2 up lets wireless clients access the web and lan easily
[07:53:34] juski: 8mbps mpeg2 1080i? Eeew!
[07:53:44] gardengnome: wow
[07:53:49] devilsclaw: Tanthrix, i get an error saying "TV error; start recorder() — timed out while waiting for recorder to start"
[07:53:51] Tanthrix: It actually doesn't look too bad.
[07:53:59] gardengnome: and saw people complaing about 8mbit/s h.264. although that was 1080p
[07:54:04] clever: im getting 500–600mb/30mins and arround 900mb/hour on mythtv

[07:54:38] clever: when i wathced my sdtv on my laptop i could easily see the compression defects
[07:54:49] clever: but when playing it back on an actual tv i couldnt see them
[07:54:53] juski: properly encoded I imagine it'll look good. but since when is TV properly or carefully encoded?
[07:54:57] Tanthrix: juski: Which only proves that many factors come into play with quality, not just bitrate.
[07:55:18] Tanthrix: I get the feeling a lot of stuff has been transcoded a few times before it eventually reaches my set
[07:55:20] juski: long enough look-ahead in the encoder can help a lot
[07:55:40] juski: and multiple encode / decode cycles in the transmission path never help
[07:55:46] clever: but a long look ahead means a larger delay in livetv features
[07:55:47] Tanthrix: devilsclaw: Never seen that before, check the mailing list
[07:56:02] clever: if its looking ahead 30 sec then you have to be atleast 30 seconds behind in livetv stuff
[07:56:21] juski: devilsclaw: pasting one line of what YOU think to be the pertinent error isn't really very good. It's all about context here

[08:00:45] Tanthrix: Dagmar: And your sure you're not seeing spikes or measuring with an inaccurate app? Googling now I'm seeing numbers anywhere from 11mbps to 25mbps for maximum sustained throughput
[08:00:50] juski: sajid: assuming of course you can access the backend from the network
[08:01:16] clever: Tanthrix: ive used telnet into xinetd's chargen port before to get massive ammounts of data transfer
[08:01:29] clever: about all it can bottleneck at is the cpu and network
[08:02:08] Tanthrix: clever: Huh? I'm talking about 802.11G here...
[08:02:12] clever: yeah
[08:02:30] clever: on my linux server(wired 100mbps) i enabled chargen in xinetd
[08:02:42] clever: then on a win2k laptop with wifi G i used telnet to connect to it

[08:05:04] clever: using cacti and snmp i was able to graph the bandwidth usage of that port

[08:09:51] diamon: gbee: I'm actually trying to convert to using WPA with RADIUS to have proper keys. WPA seems much brighter and (with good keys) far more secure.
[08:10:00] xzcvczx: thank you juski
[08:10:01] Dagmar: Oh joy, two new versions of libpng
[08:10:09] gbee: juski: I remember an argument between two friends of mine in IRC, one using the nick wibble and the other gzd – gzd asked "What sort of nick is wibble?" to which wibble replied "Hey, at least I don't sound like sneeze!"

[08:11:37] Tanthrix: I'm sure this has been asked before, but can I delete the ass load of png files I have in my recordings directory with impunity, or will the db explode?
[08:11:46] diamon: The WPA project got delayed by my trying to figure out how to get HD output for this Panasonic under-documented sack-of-feces I have the fortune to own... I know it does HD, but it doesn't seem to have EDID or DCC responses, and I have to guess at it!
[08:12:22] Dagmar: Tanthrix: Come on. By now you know not to ever manually delete anything in there
[08:12:38] Dagmar: At some point it'll start hollering about not being able to delete files that don't exist anymore
[08:12:40] LennonNZ___: IS anyone using a Haupaange HVR-4000 Card?
[08:12:47] gbee: diamon: I just used WPA with a shared key, radius was too much hassle for little benefit – it works well, although I gave up trying to get the debian config right (it *just works* in Mandriva)

[08:16:40] clever: ubuntu seems to have every single kernel module driver on the drive 24/7 waisting a small chunk of disk space
[08:16:50] clever: so any device will work instantly when connected

[12:24:12] Dagmar: I _almost_ wanna relog and see if the Freenode servers emit a charset spec
[12:24:28] fryfrog: don't do it, its suicide!!!
[12:24:33] juski: I'm beyond messing with
[12:24:41] Dagmar: Oh no you're not
[12:24:43] juski: i.e. I can't get any more fucked up
[12:24:43] directhex|work: if it does, it's violating the IRC spec
[12:24:51] directhex|work: which explicitly doesn't specify a charset
[12:25:05] Dagmar: I could show you a support email on a site I (almost troll) where someone took blurry pictures of their problem.
[12:25:20] Dagmar: They can't use their Memory Stick Pro Duo with their MicroSD card adapter
[12:25:34] Dagmar: Photos of them actually inserted into each other.
[12:25:41] directhex|work: to be fair, there are far too many memory card formats
[12:26:07] Dagmar: Yeah, but microSd is less than a cm square, and maybe 1mm thick.
[12:26:27] Dagmar: Sony memstick, about um, 3mm thick, and 4cm by 2cm
[12:26:57] Dagmar: Suffice it to say the guy *found* a way to insert it
[12:27:08] Dagmar: Looks like he pried it open and just wedged it in there
[12:27:33] Dagmar: Showing him *that* would be messing with him
[12:27:50] juski: somebody I used to work with managed to wedge an AGP card into a PCI slot. that was funny
[12:27:58] Dagmar: I settled for asking for photos with a better camera so they'd be in focus
[12:28:26] Dagmar: Those will fit fine, they just won't reach the back of the case because they're facing hte wrong way
[12:29:36] directhex|work: i hear that once... someone got chocolate in their peanut butter!
[12:30:02] Dagmar: The question is, did they have to use a hammer to drive it throught the lid of the jar?
[12:30:20] Zider: I serviced a PC once with thermal paste on the CPU socket.. and none between CPU and cooler.. :P
[12:30:25] Dagmar: lol
[12:31:14] Zider: it's sad what some people do..
[12:31:31] tzanger: haha
[12:31:46] tzanger: I could see using EJC there, but thermal paste is not electrically conductive.  :-)

[12:33:17] juski: everything's conductive eventully :)
[12:33:21] tzanger: hahaha
[12:33:25] Dagmar: This is why you don't slather arctic silver across the microtraces away from the core
[12:33:41] tzanger: ahh arctic silver contains silver... that would cause it to conduct to some degree
[12:33:57] directhex|work: tzanger, most "pc enthusiast" pastes are conductive
[12:34:05] directhex|work: due to silver content mainly
[12:34:06] tzanger: although they claim it is not electrically conductive
[12:34:14] tzanger: http://www.arcticsilver.com/as3.htm
[12:34:19] directhex|work: white ceramic goop obviously isn't conductive

[12:35:38] tzanger: quicksilver: indeed

[12:53:51] directhex|work: juski, bloody hell at what specifically?
[12:54:12] juski: directhex|work: vapochill micro :)
[12:54:12] directhex|work: (you linked a frameset)

[12:55:17] tzanger: if p == NULL, that second part of the if statement won't execute
[12:55:24] tzanger: if statements are evaluated left-to-right, right?
[12:57:15] quicksilver: if it were 'if (p &&' then you'd be right
[12:57:23] Dagmar: heh

[12:58:02] tzanger: hmm
[12:58:13] quicksilver: && short-circuits on false, not true
[12:58:19] quicksilver: || short-circuits on true :)
[12:58:23] tzanger: right
[12:58:32] tzanger: so !p evaluates true
[12:58:39] quicksilver: if p is NULL then !p is true, so the && does not short circuit
[12:58:45] quicksilver: and the calloc will be executed
[12:58:48] tzanger: and then the p=calloc() will work
[12:58:50] tzanger: yes you're right
[12:58:54] tzanger: but
[12:59:10] juski: directhex|work: point being it's lighter than a lot of heatpipes apparently
[12:59:11] Dagmar: ...but you're coding to Microsoft standards?

[12:59:28] juski: I remember my zalman flower.. almost broke my motherboard
[12:59:38] tzanger: so if p is null it'll try calloc'ing, and if p is still null, it'll do that
[12:59:39] directhex|work: juski, zalman flowers rock. they're pretty!
[12:59:41] tzanger: er it'll execute
[12:59:43] tzanger: nevermind
[12:59:47] tzanger: my mind is broken, not hte code
[12:59:49] quicksilver: right :)
[12:59:54] directhex|work: juski, and it takes a lot more than a 900g cooler to snap a board
[13:00:16] juski: yeah but CPUs aren't recommended to take much more than 500g load
[13:00:41] juski: maybe better now that cpus have more surface area on top
[13:01:08] gbee: 900g? f'ing hell!
[13:01:18] tzanger: I like the new (AM2 and Pentium heatsink mounts
[13:01:28] juski: gbee: yeah with a 12cm fan :)
[13:01:31] tzanger: nice sturdy metal bracket underneath
[13:01:44] tzanger: heatsink bolted to bracket through springs
[13:01:45] Dagmar: This is why they make those mounts that go on the underside of the board
[13:02:02] quicksilver: yeah, my humble zalman flower has a mount
[13:02:08] quicksilver: that takes the weight off the CPU
[13:02:12] quicksilver: looks purty, too
[13:03:05] gbee: makes me wonder what my old dragon orb weighs, that was a big old chunk of copper

[13:04:22] tzanger: I have an LC19, I had to actually buy a 1U AM2 heatsink+blower, then pull the 70mm blower off
[13:04:30] tzanger: and use a nice silent fan that the mb speed controls
[13:04:35] juski: directhex|work: fast enough to play h.264 HDTV in linux!
[13:05:00] gbee: Dagmar: lost the tip of a finger to the dragon orb, (well the skin off the tip)

[13:09:07] directhex|work: tzanger, they used to be well-respected. but i'd never buy another
[13:09:21] juski: asus..looks too much like anus
[13:09:33] tzanger: hahaha
[13:10:00] juski: suna.. now there's a name that would trip off the tongue
[13:10:37] gbee: actually, I lie, I did have trouble after about three years with an Asus mobo – it was one of those caught up in the Korean Caps mess
[13:10:43] directhex|work: my best motherboard was a small-name brand. i've generally had good success with small-name motherboards
[13:11:36] gbee: otherwise Asus/Abit are usually my first choice for things – my laptop is Asus (they also make some Vaio models for Sony)
[13:12:26] directhex|work: they make a lot. they're one of the four major laptop ODMs
[13:13:03] directhex|work: and i got my call back from SGI. a UK-based engineer, a direct-line email address, and the beginnings of a problem diagnosis back-and-forth. good sign

[13:19:27] juski: connector manufacturer ventures into motherboard manufacture shock!
[13:20:01] directhex|work: they do a lot of the background stuff, ODM things and so on. moving into motherboards is logical enough
[13:20:18] directhex|work: the boards are cheap and supposedly functional, no personal experience with them
[13:20:43] juski: I'm never after out & out performance. I don't compare benchmarks of motherboards
[13:21:18] directhex|work: no, benchmarks are an irrelevance. it's about engineering & functionality

[13:26:38] directhex|work: i'm livid with asus at the moment
[13:26:56] Dagmar: A8V?

[13:28:11] directhex|work: p5wdg2
[13:28:41] directhex|work: asus differentiate themselves with some fascinating hardware designs, then COMPLETELY fuck up the bios in ways you can't possibly imagine
[13:29:13] directhex|work: multiple kernel oopses per day. bad kernel driver? no, just the asus bios on my board mangling all data going to & fro from the onboard networking
[13:29:29] directhex|work: no cpu frequency scaling because those half-wits can't write a valid DSDT
[13:29:34] Dagmar: Oh THAT model
[13:29:38] directhex|work: it goes on. i'm pissed
[13:30:00] Pryon: Hahaha. This box is running on that mobo. Things settled down after turning off frequency scaling
[13:30:23] Pryon: The room is hot, but at least the machine's not locking up
[13:30:26] directhex|work: Pryon, p5wdg2 covers a lot of boards. the p5wdg2-ws is special
[13:30:42] Pryon: Oh. I thought you were talking about A8V
[13:31:10] ** Pryon crawls back under his rock **
[13:31:21] directhex|work: asus have done some great board designs. the pc-dl. the p5wdg2-ws and ws pro. the m2n32-ws pro.
[13:31:36] directhex|work: but they can't do bioses. the thousand-monkeys principle applies.
[13:33:49] directhex|work: abit lost all their great engineers to dfi years ago – except dfi's amateurish business practices mean nothing good coming out of there after their popular-but-unreliable nf4 kit
[13:34:31] directhex|work: and none of the small taiwanese players are doing boards with interesting ideas. aopen are probably the best manufacturer out there now by virtue of doing thins that are vaguely interesting

[13:56:55] directhex|work: juski, and what type of tuner?
[13:56:59] juski: rktboy: it'd take more than 2 PCI slots

[13:59:15] sid3windr: no, in a pci-x slot
[14:00:00] directhex|work: sid3windr has a p5wdg2-ws?
[14:00:18] sid3windr: a what? :)

[14:00:30] rktboy: pci-x *is* a pci
[14:00:34] sid3windr: hmm, looks like asus
[14:00:43] directhex|work: you know sticking a pci card in a pci-x slot limits all devices on that pci-x bus to regular 33mhz pci speeds, right?
[14:00:45] rktboy: pci-x allows for a 64bit pci card to be incerted
[14:00:47] sid3windr: rktboy: of course it is, just more bits and clock. otherwise it wouldn't work ;)
[14:00:58] sid3windr: directhex|work: no problemo
[14:01:05] rktboy: lol
[14:01:13] juski: we could still hire somewhere & have a blimmin mythfest

[14:26:29] directhex|work: a big fat advergame
[14:26:52] TSCHAKWerk: directhex|work: i've done game coding/design before, it's _HARD_ to create a game that people love to play.
[14:27:08] TSCHAKWerk: directhex|work: it's part of why i do 2600 hacking, because you can't do good graphics, you HAVE TO CONCENTRATE ON GAMEPLAY.
[14:27:32] directhex|work: TSCHAKWerk, coding is easy. there are a billion open source engines out there. the problem is an inherent lack of basic game design principles in every open source game out there
[14:27:46] TSCHAKWerk: directhex|work: yup.
[14:27:53] directhex|work: TSCHAKWerk, the majority of people writing these games for linux say "i don't play games (well i had a snes fifteen years ago) but..."

[14:28:42] directhex|work: TSCHAKWerk, there are some great mods for commercial games
[14:28:47] TSCHAKWerk: directhex|work: one of the most playable games I ever played, was Lucasfilm's very first game they ever released... Ballblazer.. dirt simple graphics, but it played FANTASTIC and it was fast paced, break neck, awesome.
[14:28:54] juski: is there a mod for a game with #mythtv-users?
[14:28:57] TSCHAKWerk: directhex|work: indeed.
[14:29:11] directhex|work: juski, you are in a maze of twisty config screens, all alike
[14:29:13] TSCHAKWerk: but that's the point...
[14:29:31] gbee: it's telling that the US Army saw any connection between a computer game and being a Soldier
[14:29:34] TSCHAKWerk: juski: you are likely to be eaten by a disgruntled grubie.
[14:29:38] juski: I'll always be against SLI & shite like that. Like £400 VGA cards
[14:30:19] juski: "but I get 4000000000 frags/sec!".. "and I have an allertgy o daylight"
[14:30:31] TSCHAKWerk: directhex|work: i meant, the design, the playability IS the point
[14:30:44] TSCHAKWerk: directhex|work: it takes me a few weeks of intense 6502 coding to build a game on the 2600...
[14:30:48] juski: show me a recent game that isn't just another fscking linear FPS
[14:30:56] TSCHAKWerk: directhex|work: it takes me 6 MONTHS to fine tune it, and do the gameplay just right.
[14:31:08] directhex|work: TSCHAKWerk, it's about more than the raw gameplay concepts. it's the entire presentation. the tiny details are greater than the sum of their parts
[14:31:12] directhex|work: juski, okami for ps2
[14:31:19] TSCHAKWerk: directhex|work: exactly.
[14:31:43] gbee: SLI is a massive joke, it was originally invented by the VooDoo guys when they realised that they had no more ideas after inventing their original GPU – so what else, but stick two cards together? Genius!
[14:31:51] TSCHAKWerk: but i feel that even the basic ideas of making something FUN TO PLAY, have been thrown out the window.
[14:31:56] directhex|work: gbee, to be fair, it worked
[14:32:19] TSCHAKWerk: i mean, jesus christ, to play a game today
[14:32:26] Zider: GTA Vice city is fun to play.. :D
[14:32:29] gbee: directhex: it was only ever a stopgap measure born from desperation – they went bust a short time later
[14:32:31] directhex|work: TSCHAKWerk, the risk-reward curve is broken in most modern games. how many times has omaha beach been stormed, exactly?
[14:32:34] TSCHAKWerk: I have to use controls that mass at least 12 distinct button states.
[14:32:46] TSCHAKWerk: directhex|work: hehehe
[14:33:09] gbee: only game of recent times I even want to play is Armed Assault
[14:33:26] directhex|work: gbee, voodoo2 was a success. it was failing to bring voodoo4/5 to market in a timely fashion, and making them a turn-off compared to new competition from ati and nvidia, that killed them
[14:33:33] TSCHAKWerk: I mean, even look at Doom 3
[14:33:33] fryfrog: I want to play Supreme Commander, but my system sucks :(
[14:33:37] TSCHAKWerk: awesome graphics
[14:33:48] TSCHAKWerk: holy shit i damn near pissed myself when i saw a pinkie jump out of the corner at me
[14:33:54] TSCHAKWerk: but playable?
[14:33:56] TSCHAKWerk: :-/
[14:34:01] fryfrog: directhex|work: no, what killed 3dfx was that nvidia sold their *chipset* and 3dfx decided to stop doing that and sell only *their* card
[14:34:05] directhex|work: doom 3 is lifeless. i couldn't bother playing the expansion after the first half hour
[14:34:32] TSCHAKWerk: I still play doom.
[14:34:34] gbee: voodoo 1,2 and 3 were all the same tech, reason they struggled with 4/5 was because they were unable to squeeze anything new out of it
[14:34:36] fryfrog: well, and i'm sure voodoo 4/5 being all slow and shit didn't help :)
[14:34:38] TSCHAKWerk: teh original
[14:34:40] squidly[work]: lol doom rocks
[14:34:46] directhex|work: doom 2 is better

[14:37:51] Dagmar: Just incredibly stupid US citizens
[14:37:53] TSCHAKWerk: I was always, gee, why didn't I have these WHEN I WAS MAKING THESE LEVELS? I had the fucking computer :-(
[14:37:54] directhex|work: doom and doom 2 stand the test of time because of the finely tuned level design
[14:37:55] fryfrog: president lies to us and starts a war in iraq... no big deal
[14:38:09] fryfrog: some kid makes a *video* game map that looks like his school... PANIC!
[14:38:24] Dagmar: He's going to win the suit against the school over that
[14:38:24] directhex|work: it's the reason the plutonia/evolution levels aren't interesting. they're simply not as good
[14:38:33] directhex|work: Dagmar, hope so
[14:38:40] TSCHAKWerk: it takes TIME and anal attention to detail to make something good
[14:38:41] Dagmar: You can pretty much bank on it
[14:38:54] Dagmar: Literally EVERY book on game level design says to make a map of somewhere you know well _first_
[14:38:56] TSCHAKWerk: the unwillingness to settle for anything less than finely tuned.
[14:39:05] TSCHAKWerk: yup

[14:39:41] TSCHAKWerk: games get KILLED when those two furies are out of balance :-P
[14:39:45] Dagmar: ...not to mention the kid was nearly a straight-A student.
[14:40:08] Dagmar: They're not going to be able to demonstrate any kind of malicious motive or intent
[14:40:08] directhex|work: i should compile a top-10 games list again. it's been a long time since i last did one, and there are some upsets
[14:40:22] directhex|work: Dagmar, he was "quiet and asian"!
[14:40:54] Dagmar: ...which will get them in trouble with the usual crowd of lawyers handling racist cases
[14:41:30] Dagmar: the kid apparently had a small army of supporters show up at the school board hearings about it
[14:41:37] Dagmar: So it ain't like he was a loner either

[20:28:49] Beirdo: changing your overscan a bit so it's off the screen might alleviate it a bit... but just guessing
[20:28:58] Beirdo: I wouldn't have thought so
[20:29:11] hadees: And it doesn't show up on the QAM tuner in my TV
[20:29:26] Beirdo: I think it's the VBI stuff on "normal" TV.. like closed captioning, but I could be wrong there
[20:29:40] Beirdo: and in MPEG, that's a separate stream, no?
[20:30:04] Beirdo: or at least different packet types, or something, I looked it up once, and forget

[20:31:43] hadees: hehe no i
[20:32:25] rktboy: could it be stuff outside the frame? overscanning keeps this from showing up under normal signal circumstances
[20:32:50] Beirdo: rktboy, that's what I was saying, but I don't know that digital TV encodes that way too
[20:32:54] rktboy: it could be that when playing back the resolution is below the size of the visible screen

[20:52:34] Beirdo: about $10/day
[20:52:54] juski: I still feel evil though
[20:53:09] Beirdo: this the lack of smokes kickin in?
[20:53:12] tzanger: what's wrong with jtag?

[20:53:20] tzanger: I do embedded devleopment and jtag's great :-)
[20:53:35] juski: tzanger: slow, complicated. horrible, with the apps the VB wiz's at work 'write'
[20:53:40] tzanger: ah
[20:53:48] tzanger: you need real jtag interfaces... but those are super expensive
[20:54:02] juski: they obsfurcate the whole process so that nobody knows how to do it but them
[20:54:03] Beirdo: but JTAG programming of gacked FLASH is a god-send

[20:55:18] tzanger: juski: aha
[20:56:13] juski: one guy (who's leaving soon) laid out a PSU board for a dome camera using 50 thou tracks for the power lines
[20:56:29] fryfrog: why so many?
[20:56:47] juski: fryfrog: 50 thou as in.. 0.050 inch thick
[20:56:55] fryfrog: ohhh
[20:57:04] fryfrog: not as in 50,000 different tracks :)
[20:57:07] juski: so we turned on the 1st prototype & it went ffssssssssst!
[20:57:12] fryfrog: why is that good or bad? to thick/thin?
[20:57:16] fryfrog: ahhh
[20:57:23] fryfrog: too much current, to thin line :)

[20:58:38] Beirdo: way way too thin for power lines with decent current... and I did the firmware and I knew all this stuff
[20:58:40] juski: Beirdo: with smoke
[20:58:57] Beirdo: smoke is fun... but disconcerting when on a schedule
[20:59:03] directhex: teprrr, not unless your hardware has issues
[20:59:04] juski: Beirdo: I'm only a technician & I know this stuff
[20:59:34] juski: teprrr: if you're using 0.20-fixes & you imported a channels.conf rather than scanning.. that's yer problem!
[21:00:16] teprrr: juski, ahh. it may be because of that import of channels.conf then
[21:00:44] juski: teprrr: if scanning inside mythtv-setup doesn't work you should report it
[21:03:40] teprrr: juski, well, at least it works when I use the already available channels.conf as a base

[21:04:56] juski: reason EIT is failing for you is that it needs information missing from a channels.conf file to work ;)
[21:05:25] Saviq: will some HD content play well there?
[21:05:35] juski: Saviq: what kind of question is that? you've not given any inkling about the kind of TV you'll be dealing with or anything
[21:05:37] Tronic: Someone said that the information actually is in channels.conf, but MythTV just doesn't read it.

[23:08:55] AngryElf: gbee, 20 didn't work after a try or two and my .19 script to install everything the way I like works really well :)
[23:09:01] sajid: itll be near a window, inside a stone building
[23:09:10] Beirdo: just a word to the wise... if upgrading a dapper box to feisty.... upgrade to edgy FIRST unless you like battling it
[23:09:13] Fnc: ah.. yikes...
[23:09:28] Fnc: im on the roof... works real nice
[23:09:31] Beirdo: I just had to dpkg -r metacity to unbork it
[23:09:37] sajid: this is for a dorm room
[23:09:39] gardengnome: Beirdo: get kde?
[23:09:49] Beirdo: why would I want kde?
[23:09:55] Beirdo: gnome sucks bad enough :)

[23:10:01] Beirdo: nah
[23:10:06] Beirdo: they both suck equally
[23:10:09] GreyFoxx: ?Mmmmm someone is actually working on yth under cygwin again.. cool
[23:10:15] sajid: true, neither is great
[23:10:20] sajid: but GNOME is significantly worse
[23:10:28] ** Beirdo shrugs **
[23:10:33] sajid: anyway, there is no chance of this convo goin anywhere
[23:10:34] sajid: lol
[23:10:48] Beirdo: I long for the days of fvwm being the "norm"
[23:10:53] sajid: heh
[23:11:32] Beirdo: I may eventually just switch back, and to hell with session managers

[23:18:53] GreyFoxx: kash: I like it. At least on my desktop machines. I use to use IceWM, have have moved to XFCE

[23:21:20] MrGeoff: Anyone know why MythTV would cause X to use up a lot of CPU just in the menu? I'm using the QT painter, not OpenGL. It causes a delay of almost a second every time I hit an arrow key to move around the menu.
[23:21:59] directhex: MrGeoff, which theme?
[23:22:03] MrGeoff: With OpenGL, the menu is smoother but the CPU usage stays high all the time (with QT it ramps up when I hit an arrow key and stays high for a while after the current menu position changes.
[23:22:05] MrGeoff: All of them.
[23:22:22] directhex: MrGeoff, which graphics driver?
[23:22:30] MrGeoff: radeon
[23:22:42] MrGeoff: It's only started happening recently.
[23:22:46] MrGeoff: Always with 0.20-fixes.
[23:22:58] MrGeoff: Thing is sometimes going into info center resolves it without even having to exit the app.
[23:23:00] MrGeoff: It's very strange.
[23:23:09] MrGeoff: I'm trying to work on an strace to see where it's getting stuck
[23:23:17] MrGeoff: I gotta go now but I'll post that later if I don't hear anything.
[23:23:25] directhex: i can only think of one thing that would cause that, and that can't be it since you said it happens on all themes

[23:49:05] directhex: there's nothing "easy" where LIRC is involved. just lots of hard, unpleasant work
[23:49:23] directhex: which i'm too tired to help with. so try looking on your distro's wiki for a reference
[23:49:33] fryfrog: you should just thank your lucky stars there is no actual anal rape involved, just figurativly :/
[23:49:54] chadmaynard: is there a way to see if lirc is even receiving commands?
[23:50:35] fryfrog: irw, or mode2 i think?
[23:53:50] chadmaynard: thanks, when i run mode2 -d /dev/lirc0 and then press a button i see tons of..... well stuff. I guess that means the remote is getting to /dev/lirc0
