[00:32:36] vinz4343: anyone can post me a sample record of mythconverg.channel please?
[00:32:44] Cowman: directv... so basically I have component outs or DVI out
[00:32:50] Juski: if they use DVB-S2 instead of DVB-S... linux users are screwed for now
[00:32:58] Fnc: there is but its wierd bd like 350 bux or so
[00:32:59] Beirdo: hahahaha. XGP is Biostar-specific AGP pseudo-compatible
[00:33:30] Mattwj2005: ok
[00:33:36] Juski: Cowman: you cannot capure component or DVI, not now, not ever (not likely)

[00:36:48] Fnc: xbox what did you use
[00:36:48] Fnc: ?
[00:37:07] Cowman: do you have any issues with fast forwarding though recordings? Mine would freeze or do it very slowly
[00:37:08] Juski: most res you'll get out of an xbox is 720p
[00:37:57] Cowman: IIRC, just xebian and myth
[00:37:59] Juski: Cowman: no issues like that. likely to be a time problem (no ntp, wrong timezone etc)
[00:38:34] Cowman: hmm, maybe I'll play with it and see about that
[00:38:58] Cowman: would the time being different on the backend matter with a recording though?
[00:39:08] Cowman: I mean it's just basicaly streaming a video file over the network right
[00:39:31] Juski: oh hell yeah it matters alright
[00:39:48] Juski: cos the timestamps in the recordedmarkup table are absolute, not relative
[00:40:46] Juski: at least AFAIK they're absolute. I mean if they were relative why would it matter what time it is on the frontend?
[00:41:03] Cowman: so.. if my client and server are 2 minutes apart and I'm watching something I recorded 3 days ago that would be problematic
[00:41:15] Juski: could be
[00:41:21] Cowman: I thought time would only matter for recording on the backend

[00:42:10] Juski: mounting the recordings dir with nfs can help sometimes
[00:43:34] gardengnome: maybe the timestamps in the DB are relative and the BE makes them absolute *ponder*

[00:45:15] Cowman: hmm
[00:45:21] Juski: fixed the timezone, and voila!
[00:45:29] Cowman: maybe I'll dust off the xbox and try again then
[00:46:10] gardengnome: Juski: i think i have that problem on the s100. which makes me wonder why the timezone isn't set up properly on a german distro. well, i'll have to look into it.

[02:11:30] Cowman: I can connect from the localhost... so it must still not be allowing outside access for some reason
[02:12:44] hoochie: mmm... well I might give it another go then with 0.19*
[02:12:51] GreyFoxx: well, what is the error you get ?
[02:13:03] hoochie: If interested I'll let you guys know how it works( or doesn't) :)
[02:13:04] GreyFoxx: If it's a connection permissions issue it wil be clear
[02:13:04] Cowman: ERROR 1045: Access denied for user 'mythtv'@'192.168.1.20' (using password: YES)
[02:13:17] GreyFoxx: then, yes it's a sql users access problem
[02:13:38] Cowman: thought so
[02:13:40] GreyFoxx: after you did the grant to give access from that IP did you do a "flush privileges;" ?
[02:13:54] Cowman: yes
[02:14:01] Cowman: here's literaly what I put in
[02:14:28] Cowman: grant all on mythconverg.* to mythtv@"%" identified by "mythtv";
[02:14:37] Cowman: flush privileges;
[02:15:05] GreyFoxx: why would you give accessfrom any IP ?:)
[02:15:18] GreyFoxx: And that problem is something I see happen a lot when people try
[02:15:30] GreyFoxx: try making it 192.168.1.%
[02:15:36] GreyFoxx: or the exact IP
[02:15:47] hoochie (hoochie!n=hoochie3@203-158-49-225.dyn.iinet.net.au) has quit ("Leaving")
[02:15:49] GreyFoxx: and I'd get rid of the wildcard entry
[02:16:30] Cowman: ok.. how do you remove that stuff? I'm just going from the myth docs
[02:16:48] Whyvas: thanks again GreyFoxx !
[02:17:35] Cowman: cause it still does not work with 192.168.1.%
[02:17:43] GreyFoxx: Cowman: do the mythtv.org docs actually show mythtv@"%" ?
[02:17:59] Cowman: http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-6.html
[02:18:01] GreyFoxx: Cowman: It islikely hitting that other entry first and stopping there
[02:18:02] GreyFoxx: ok
[02:18:04] Cowman: yes
[02:18:12] ** GreyFoxx might update that **
[02:18:28] Cowman: how do I delete that entry though?
[02:19:09] GreyFoxx: use mysql;
[02:19:30] GreyFoxx: delete from user where Host =
[02:19:33] GreyFoxx: oops
[02:19:37] GreyFoxx: delete from user where Host = "%";
[02:19:51] GreyFoxx: then flush privs again;
[02:21:07] Cowman: ERROR 1046 (3D000): No database selected
[02:21:35] Cowman: ok hang on..

[02:31:39] GreyFoxx: type this
[02:31:53] GreyFoxx: mysql -h SQLSERVERHOST -umythtv -pmythtv mythconverg
[02:32:00] GreyFoxx: replaceing SQLSERVERHOST withthe right IP
[02:32:31] Cowman: heh, got a prompt
[02:32:51] GreyFoxx: so you have myth configured to send a password other than "mythtv" or with a wrong username :)
[02:33:08] GreyFoxx: look for a mysql.txt file. Maybe in ~/.mythtv/mysql.txt
[02:33:09] Cowman: the password isn't mythtv
[02:33:15] GreyFoxx: Uhhh yeah it is
[02:33:22] GreyFoxx: according to the line you just used in the grant
[02:33:45] Cowman: oh so I set a new one then, I thought that was a username
[02:33:59] Cowman: the password the client on the localhost uses to connect is different
[02:34:10] GreyFoxx: nope "identified by xxxxx": is the password forthe user when connecting from that host
[02:34:25] Cowman: ok, well that was a source of confusion
[02:34:28] GreyFoxx: and just now using the password mythtv worked for you
[02:34:37] Cowman: I was trying to use the other password lol

[04:21:54] hoochie: I'm sure this has been asked, but I thought I would ask anyway, are there any cards suggested for TV output?
[04:22:05] xris: nvidia 5200 or 6200
[04:22:05] hoochie: ones which work with HD etc
[04:22:12] xris: oh, then any nvidia...
[04:22:23] xris: since you'll just be using the dvi or vga port
[04:22:43] hoochie: I thought PVR 350 was the choice to go?
[04:22:50] xris: for one, it doesn't do hd.
[04:23:16] xris: for two, nvidia's output is better, and pvr-150 + nvidia 5200 costs less than a 350. and the 350 isn't made anymore.
[04:23:24] hoochie: ok
[04:23:43] xris: what kind of hd are you planning to record?
[04:24:10] hoochie: 1080* i believe
[04:24:26] xris: from where, though?
[04:24:30] xris: cable or ota?
[04:24:41] hoochie: FTA
[04:24:44] hoochie: dvb-t
[04:25:06] xris: oh, then you'd need a dvb card instead of a pvr-x50, anyway
[04:25:19] hoochie: I've got the dvb card
[04:25:38] hoochie: I'm interested in the best card* for mythtv to output quality wise to my tv
[04:25:45] xris: then any nvidia should do well for you.. just make sure you have a fast (>2ghz) processor.
[04:25:52] xris: nvidia's drivers are best in linux
[04:26:11] hoochie: I thought nvidia's DAC was rather shitty?
[04:27:34] xris: no.. and since when is HD analog?
[04:27:53] xris: (ok, I know that it can be, but still...)
[04:28:24] hoochie: Since I'm outputing it through a s-vid connector to my tv.
[04:29:06] xris: then it's not HD
[04:29:11] xris: and nvidia is still your best option
[04:29:48] hoochie: ok
[04:33:38] xris: for SD like that, at least a 5200. 6200 if you can find one within a few $$ that has good output options.
[04:35:55] hoochie: is 6200 much different to 6600?

[04:40:41] joffray: then no

[04:41:03] joffray: you're outputting 1080i to s-video

[05:10:50] sha_ is now known as sha
[05:12:04] FunnyLookinHat: oooh, add something liek this? -prefix=/usr/local/mythtv-0.19
[05:12:05] FunnyLookinHat: i hopez
[05:17:12] Dagmar: *whew*
[05:17:16] Dagmar: For the record...
[05:17:47] Dagmar: A 27" Philips TV *will* fit in a BMW 325i 2-door, IF and ONLY IF you don't mind hanging out the driver's side window as you drive.
[05:18:10] Dagmar: FunnyLookinHat: There's a reason for that
[05:18:29] Dagmar: The system linker cache only looks in a specific set of directories for the libraries.
[05:18:31] FunnyLookinHat: hahaha Dagmar
[05:18:49] Dagmar: IF you had installed with --prefix=/usr you wouldn't have this problem, but it's easily fixable.
[05:19:00] FunnyLookinHat: well, it appeared after I did a sudo updatedb / locate that it wasn't even copying the libs anywhere
[05:19:13] Dagmar: Allow me to direct your attention to /etc/ld.so.conf (by which I mean type `cat /etc/ld.so.conf`)
[05:19:16] FunnyLookinHat: I'm fixing it now  : )
[05:19:19] Dagmar: It is
[05:19:34] Dagmar: updatedb/locatedb doesn't look there
[05:19:43] FunnyLookinHat: oooh
[05:19:46] FunnyLookinHat: that's weird it hsould
[05:19:49] FunnyLookinHat: imnsho
[05:19:50] Dagmar: That file contains a list of the directories that the linker is supposed to search for shared libraries.
[05:20:16] Dagmar: The linker will *always* search both /lib and /usr/lib, no matter what, and it will search them *first*
[05:20:32] Dagmar: What you need to do is add /usr/local/mythtv-0.19/lib to that file, and then run `ldconfig`
[05:20:33] joffray: unless you're running ubuntu (or debian in general)
[05:20:50] Dagmar: Ldconfig makes the system go look at all those directories again and store the information about them in /etc/ld.so.cache
[05:20:51] joffray: hrm
[05:20:57] joffray: or it doesn't look in /usr/local/lib
[05:20:57] Dagmar: Once you've run ldconfig you'll be good to go.

[05:21:16] FunnyLookinHat: I'm running ubuntu  ; )
[05:21:25] Dagmar: It won't look in /usr/local/lib either unless it's been specified in /etc/ld.so.conf, or unless someone has done something very ill-advised to the linker's source code
[05:22:18] Dagmar: If he ran configure with --prefix=/usr/local/mythtv-0.19, then "/usr/local/mythtv-0.19" was used as the $prefix variable during the build. The path fragments of "/bin", "/lib", "/shared" and so forth are appended to it
[05:22:32] Dagmar: Getting that TV home was a bloody nightmare
[05:22:55] joffray: I did something even less advisable the first time I set it up
[05:23:01] Dagmar: But I'm going to be having me a gen-u-ine cin-e-matical experience now
[05:23:03] joffray: I installed it once with --prefix=/usr
[05:23:07] joffray: then installed it regularly
[05:23:11] Dagmar: OUch
[05:23:16] Dagmar: Yeah, that breaks badly.
[05:23:20] joffray: it actually worked for a long time
[05:23:31] Dagmar: ...because the linker will look in /lib and /usr/lib first, no matter what you do.
[05:23:33] joffray: until I couldn't figure out why my updates weren't working
[05:23:46] Dagmar: This is not a bug, this is by design and for a reason that would require a really lengthy explanation.
[05:24:10] Dagmar: Basically, /usr/local is damn near deprecated for most things, compared to what it was originally used for
[05:24:38] Dagmar: Many years ago (or a few, depending on how you look at it) /lib and /usr/lib would be searched _last_ so that you could kind of override libraries and things
[05:25:02] Dagmar: Then people wised up and decided that if the system was installed with something, it's just inviting problems to let random idiots replace them without understanding possible conflicts.  ;)
[05:25:55] Dagmar: ...cause sure enough, new things would be looking in /usr/local/etc (which actually makes little sense by the normal filesystem conventions) for it's configuration files, and the inexperienced would still be editing files in /etc and wondering why nothing changed
[05:26:05] Dagmar: ...or worse yet, never realizing that what they just changed wasn't working
[05:27:52] Dagmar: The absolute "FTW!" way to install packages is to make an actual RPM or deb or tgz package of them and install them into /usr
[05:28:28] Dagmar: *Not* using a package manager to install things results in "filesystem cruft" accumulating over time
[05:29:00] Dagmar: ...and one day you look and see that /usr is all filled up, and you have forty-seven different copies of libgsf.so sitting around

[05:37:39] Dagmar: ...and it must be writeable ONLY by root.
[05:37:53] FunnyLookinHat: Dagmar, ok awesome, that works

[10:55:19] Juski: I'm sure there are DVI/component capture devices somewhere, possibly ones which compress on the fly too, but they'll be ££££££££
[10:55:30] Juski: and there's likely to be no linux drivers for them
[10:56:28] SteveDaniels: :-(
[10:56:54] SteveDaniels: So Freeview is the only HD option availible (in the near future)?
[10:56:56] Juski: You _could_ capture svideo & audio from the box but erm.. I think we all know that wouldn't be acceptable ;-)
[10:57:22] Juski: Freeview for HD isn't likely to be an option until at least 2012, and even then only if the govt. provide airspace for new muxes
[10:58:39] Juski: FTA satellite HD might happen on a wide scale before then, but the likelihood is that they'll use DVB-S2... and guess what... linux drivers don't yet exist afaik. Not to say that they _won't_.. just gonna be a matter of time
[10:59:00] SteveDaniels: Is there a cable option for HD?
[10:59:12] Juski: not one compatible with MythTV, no
[10:59:20] Juski: not a legal one either
[11:00:24] SteveDaniels: Ok, thanks for yout time and insight Juski
[11:00:27] Juski: in any case, UK HDTV is looking very much like it'll be h.264. You need a _lot_ of grunt to decode that. I mean _loads_.. Dual 3Ghz, 64-bit
[11:00:41] Juski: if you want full framerate, that is ;-)
[11:00:47] SteveDaniels: Eeek!
[11:01:08] Juski: search on www.digitalspy.com to see what people have managed with the bbc HD test mux in London...
[11:01:34] Juski: 15fps playback on a 3Ghz machine... not good eh

[11:01:47] Juski: aye
[11:01:53] Juski: no hardware decoding help yet either
[11:02:27] Juski: although some of the satellite HD box manufacturers appear to use something linuxy, so maybe there's hope yet
[11:03:02] Juski: you seen the back of a $ky HD box? it has ethernet, USB & firewire... imagine if they were enabled!
[11:03:50] SteveDaniels: I can VERY much imagine a stack of those boxes plugged into a switch with some myth magic tying it all together...!
[11:04:27] Juski: oh and finally.. if you're secretly living under the misapprehension that one day it'll be hacked & made more functional, think again. $ky's SD PVR has been around for ages & all folks have been able to do is add more HDD space
[11:05:45] SteveDaniels: So for the UK, are the many reasons to be able to output hi res to drive an HDTV?
[11:05:59] Juski: not being able to get/use HD for a few years yet has some benefits for people like me, though. by the time it's all commonplace I might be able to afford a proper, 1080 TV
[11:06:41] Juski: SteveDaniels: not really. either way, 95% of sets on sale aren't _real_ HD anyway.. just that 'HD ready' crap which is 720p
[11:07:21] SteveDaniels: yeah i've had to hold back laughter listening to sales people selling these amazing hd tv sets..

[16:19:06] knownot: I'm -ok- with linux, and programming, and can't figure out if I have done somthing wrong, I was wondering if there is a way to test if the card/driver is working as it should
[16:19:11] Juski: still didn't catch that tshirt place open :-/ fsck!
[16:19:29] Juski: knownot: try the dvb section of the mythtv wiki wiki wa wa
[16:19:37] roger55: knownot, have you tried using the *zap tools from dvbutils?
[16:19:52] knownot: yes, done both
[16:20:13] Juski: use scan to scan for channels.. write a channels.conf
[16:20:24] Juski: then use tzap "channel name" in one term window
[16:21:16] Juski: then in another term window do mplayer < /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 or something (e.g. cat/ dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 > test.mpg)

[16:22:50] Juski: that should be on one of the aussie wikis
[16:22:55] Juski: dunno
[16:23:07] Juski: but you don't do scan -c channels.conf
[16:23:22] Juski: you might redirect the output from scan into a channels.conf file

[16:28:12] Juski: have you checked to see if you're in an area covered by digital? I read the other day that your analogue switchoff has been put back

[21:12:48] erubright: hello all! I currently have 1 backend with 2 tuners. I'd like to re-configure, so I have 1 MBE(with no tuners, this is NOT my current backend) and 2 slave backends(1 tuner each).
[21:13:11] erubright: what confuses me is that the backend I currently have...will become a slave backend
[21:13:17] Juski: that's nice. why?
[21:13:19] erubright: so how do I configure this
[21:13:33] Juski: just set up the new master BE...
[21:13:47] erubright: it will become the new MBE?

[21:14:15] erubright: ah....ok

[21:16:42] erubright: yeah...thats what one of my backends uses...cuz its hooked to the Comcast cable box
