[00:41:00] | banyan: | Hi. Just trying to put a second card in my backend. (yeowch!) My current card is a PVR350, the new one is a PVR250. I get an error in my dmesg log about getting the encoder firmware version. |
[00:42:00] | banyan: | I gather that I don't have to run two separate ivtv modules to do this... is there any configuration I may have missed on this? |
[00:42:00] | xris: | banyan: search the ivtv mailing list archives... it gets a little messy when you're running two different ivtv cards (and no, I don't know the answer, just that one is out there) |
[00:43:00] | lilo (i=levin@freenode/staff/pdpc.levin) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:46:00] | banyan: | It does seem to auto-detect things up to a certain level correctly. |
[00:47:00] | Charnjibber_: | Hi there. I got my new MythTV box running fine, almost... I have Hauppauge WinTV Nova and PVR-350 installed ok. Everything works fine, but why do I have PVR-350 video only when watching Live TV. I do not have any analogue channels setup. |
[00:48:00] | Charnjibber_: | I know it is video feed from PVR-350 because if I tune it manually image changes... |
[00:48:00] | xris: | Charnjibber_: did you set up a listings source for it in mythtv-setup? |
[00:49:00] | Charnjibber_: | uh, do you mean that do I have input source for PVR-350? Yes, I do. does it matter? |
[00:51:00] | xris: | well, mythtv won't know what channels exist on the 350 unless you tell it which channel listing source it uses (meaning, you set up the listing source, and then you set which source the 350 uses — 2 different sections of mythtv-setup) |
[00:51:00] | Charnjibber_: | well, I do not care less for channels from 350, I would like to prefer Nova-T. |
[00:52:00] | Charnjibber_: | So, I would like to have only DVB-T channels (for a starter) to keep things simple. |
[00:52:00] | Charnjibber_: | :-) |
[00:53:00] | xris: | ok.. so you ask why the 350 doesn't work, and then you say that you don't want it to work? what's the point? |
[00:57:00] | Charnjibber_: | no, what does not work is live-tv. It shows video only from 350. sorry if I was not clear enough. Bit a late now.. |
[00:58:00] | Charnjibber_: | Is this default? video only from /dev/video0 when watching live-tv? |
[00:58:00] | mmurphy: | anyone know where i can find lircd-g.conf for the grey pvr remote on the web? |
[00:59:00] | xris: | so it won't switch to the dvb card when you press Y to switch between cards? |
[01:00:00] | AppleBoy: | xris: do you perhaps know anything about the HD3000? |

[01:03:00] | xris: | Charnjibber_: then I have no clue... finish setting up your cards so that both the dvb card and 350 have video sources, then maybe it'll wor |
[01:03:00] | FunkyELF: | so I got a .asoundrc file which is supposed to set the default output as the s/pdif out which which seems to work with xmms when I set the output to alsa, but can't get it to work with mplayer or mythtv |
[01:03:00] | xris: | work |
[01:03:00] | xris: | FunkyELF: did you compile mythtv with alsa support? |
[01:03:00] | FunkyELF: | xris, I'll check |
[01:03:00] | FunkyELF: | xris, yeah, it is in my USE variables |
[01:03:00] | Charnjibber_: | xris: OK, thanks. I'll try to create some channels for 350. |
[01:04:00] | xris: | FunkyELF: not what I asked. simply telling mythtv to do it won't make it fail if it can't find the headers. |
[01:05:00] | xris: | anyway, wish I could be more help than that, but that's all I know. |
[01:05:00] | FunkyELF: | xris, hrm...when I got mplayer to work when I passed it -ao alsa |
[01:05:00] | FunkyELF: | so maybe it is just that mythtv is using oss instead of alsa |

[01:17:00] | FunkyELF: | I think my database is hosed since I had the date set wrong. Now I have files showing up twice in my recordings. Can I just dump the whole database and start over? Does Myth expect there to be tables in there already or should I leave the tables and delete the rows in them? |
[01:18:00] | PatrickDK: | hmm, it expects the tables |

[01:53:00] | xris: | that should force files created in the directory to be of that group... |
[01:54:00] | xris: | personally, I just chmod 777 (rwx all) on the directory... the files come in readable by everyone by default... the frontend user never writes to the files, anyway. |
[01:54:00] | mmurphy: | awe good idea |
[01:54:00] | yuriks: | xris hmmm, wp says it uses an proprietary encrypted format, any chances of that working too? |
[01:56:00] | xris: | yuriks: can't help you with that bit... I assume it's possible (some non-US services will rent you a smartcard that will plug into a dvb card to do the decryption) since there are plenty of UK SKY users. |
[01:56:00] | yuriks: | yeah, my receiver has card-thingy |
[01:57:00] | jd86: | I see the hardware requirements on the documentation, but whats the minimum network connections peed (wireles?? no?) cpu and memory for a frontend only box |
[01:57:00] | xris: | yuriks: the trick is going to be finding a dvb card that works with your smartcard. |
[01:57:00] | yuriks: | =/ |
[01:57:00] | xris: | jd86: 10bT should be fine |

[02:47:00] | FunkyELF: | /usr/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql all that does is set up the database and privilages, not create tables. I'm wondering when the tables get created? |
[02:47:00] | FunkyELF: | when I run mythsetup as root? |
[02:47:00] | PaulWay: | I don't know. |
[02:47:00] | PaulWay: | I thought that was it. |
[02:47:00] | PaulWay: | If that's the case it may be a bit easier. |
[02:48:00] | PaulWay: | Do the dump of your database and then drop all the tables |
[02:48:00] | PaulWay: | Hmmm – that probably involves typing in 50-odd table names. scratch that idea. |
[02:48:00] | PaulWay: | Just drop the database and recreate it. |
[02:49:00] | PaulWay: | Basically if you follow the steps of a standard install, then it should rebuild the table structures as new. |

[02:51:00] | FunkyELF: | PaulWay, yeah...I'm just trying to get back into the gentoo wiki but my browser is acting up |

[02:52:00] | FunkyELF: | so now I can't get into my profile which had the page bookmarked. I could google for it but I'm pissed |
[02:52:00] | FunkyELF: | nope -9 didn't work |
[02:52:00] | PaulWay: | What's the parent process? ps -fp 9023 |
[02:53:00] | PaulWay: | It may be zombied and waiting for that process to clean up. |
[02:53:00] | FunkyELF: | yourname 9023 9018 0 18:25 pts/2 00:00:00 /bin/bash /usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher |
[02:54:00] | FunkyELF: | yeah...that worked...killing the parent |
[02:54:00] | PaulWay: | Processes do that sometimes. |
[02:55:00] | FunkyELF: | you see to know your way around linux pretty well....do you use it at work? |
[02:55:00] | PaulWay: | Yeah. |
[02:56:00] | FunkyELF: | thats cool I use Solaris at work sometimes |
[02:56:00] | PaulWay: | Dual opteron machine running FC4. |
[02:56:00] | PaulWay: | I worked with Solaris for years and years – since about 95. |

[02:57:00] | ** PaulWay shakes nervously **

[02:57:00] | jd86: | :( where is my friend... he should definatly pick up his phone so i can convince him to go with me tomorrow to mit swapfest, so we can go tv tuner hunting ;-) |
[02:57:00] | FunkyELF: | I like that they're open sourcing stuff tho. |
[02:57:00] | PaulWay: | jd86: what are you looking for? |
[02:57:00] | jd86: | a tuner? |
[02:57:00] | jd86: | and other random junk |
[02:57:00] | jd86: | dont want to go alone up to boston, its a bit of a ride from here (ri) |
[02:57:00] | PaulWay: | FunkyELF: i.e. they've realised that there are thousands of geeks who will happily send in well-documented bug patches if they have the source. |
[02:58:00] | PaulWay: | jd86: i.e. what kind of tuner? Go dvb if you can... |
[02:58:00] | jd86: | yea.. stuff like taht goes fast |
[02:58:00] | jd86: | how much is a dvb tuner generally? |
[02:58:00] | PaulWay: | Digital TV is just great, if you've got the coverage. |
[02:58:00] | jd86: | i dont know much about the entire dvb thing |
[02:58:00] | PaulWay: | Well, I don't know what the prices are in the US, in Australia they're about $100 or so. |
[02:59:00] | jd86: | can i just hook it up or do i have to call my cable company and add another thing for the digital thing? |
[02:59:00] | PaulWay: | But I imagine they're considerably cheaper than $75 in the US. |
[02:59:00] | jd86: | what card is decent? |
[02:59:00] | FunkyELF: | PaulWay, I just think it is sad how nobody is buying their over-priced stuff. You used to buy a Sun box with a Sparc running Solaris, now from them you buy a Xeon or AMD64 running Linux.,,not their HW or SW |
[02:59:00] | PaulWay: | If you're going Digital 'free to air' you just need a good UHF/VHF aerial. |
[02:59:00] | jd86: | it _best_ not be raining again |
[03:00:00] | PaulWay: | FunkyELF: The reality is that having a bunch of different chip manufacturers all producing small quantities of chips, each barred from using others' technology, means no-one wins. |
[03:00:00] | PaulWay: | jd86: *chuckles* |
[03:01:00] | PaulWay: | And the reality is that the AMD Opterons with Hypertransport kick _*everyone's*_ arse when it comes to bus throughput. |

[03:03:00] | PaulWay: | FunkyELF: The easiest is to drop the database. |

[03:03:00] | PaulWay: | you may have to say 'drop database mythconverg' |
[03:03:00] | FunkyELF: | thats it |
[03:04:00] | PaulWay: | drop needs to know what type of thing you're dropping, just in case you've got a table and an index called foo. |

[08:38:00] | mchou: | takes like less than 1 min even on a slow machine...... |
[08:39:00] | SlicerDicer-: | well mchou when I used gentoo to build the ivtv drivers it check /usr/src/linux my kernel directory |
[08:39:00] | SlicerDicer-: | I am just wondering if I needed to rebuild it thats all |
[08:39:00] | mchou: | oh lord! |

[08:40:00] | mchou: | SlicerDicer-: have fun, "rebuild world" |
[08:40:00] | mchou: | SlicerDicer-: what tuners? |
[08:40:00] | SlicerDicer-: | the new ones you got |

[08:42:00] | SlicerDicer-: | nice |
[08:42:00] | mchou: | but they weren't all recording simult |
[08:43:00] | mchou: | but ivtv is pretty screwed |
[08:43:00] | mchou: | 3.8 has better picture quality than 4.0 |
[08:43:00] | mchou: | but 3.8 has some bugs |

[08:50:00] | djperegrine: | doesn't iwconfig do that? |

[08:51:00] | SlicerDicer-: | mchou, Upstream Power 52.6 dBmV |
[08:51:00] | mchou: | so I moved it ahead of my so called amplied splitters and it went to -4.0 dBmV :) |
[08:52:00] | mchou: | amplified* |
[08:52:00] | mchou: | 10 dB loss is pretty bad |
[08:52:00] | SlicerDicer-: | why did you have splitters? |

[08:54:00] | SlicerDicer-: | errrm right.... |
[08:55:00] | SlicerDicer-: | why the hell would your house need a amp anyway |
[08:55:00] | SlicerDicer-: | lol |
[08:55:00] | SlicerDicer-: | its not traveling that far... |
[08:55:00] | SlicerDicer-: | I mean its not like you live in a 50 billion sqft house |
[08:55:00] | mchou: | I've got at least 8 cable drops in my house |
[08:55:00] | SlicerDicer-: | well thats why then |
[08:55:00] | mchou: | every drop loses power, hence you need amp |
[08:56:00] | SlicerDicer-: | are more than 5 active? |

[08:56:00] | ** SlicerDicer- stamps nerd on mchou's forehead **

[08:58:00] | SlicerDicer-: | hope you did not pay for that install |

[08:58:00] | mchou: | yes I did. Paid the extra premium when I bought the house |
[08:58:00] | SlicerDicer-: | I got a 199$ install refunded due to incompentence |
[08:58:00] | SlicerDicer-: | lol |

[08:59:00] | mchou: | $199? |
[08:59:00] | SlicerDicer-: | well thats all the install was |
[08:59:00] | SlicerDicer-: | all they did was stuck a router in the corner turned it on and said THERE!!! your good |

[08:59:00] | SlicerDicer-: | the guy was a dickhead |
[08:59:00] | mchou: | lol |
[08:59:00] | SlicerDicer-: | so they came out fixed it and refunded it |
[08:59:00] | mchou: | what kind of router? |

[09:01:00] | SlicerDicer-: | umm... this was a comcast one |

[09:02:00] | SlicerDicer-: | they are the really good guys they know what they are doing |
[09:02:00] | SlicerDicer-: | so you dont have some dipshit that does not know what a ping is LOL!! |
[09:02:00] | mchou: | screw that. I'll be damned if I need to stick around for 4 hrs. for a tech to show up. |

[09:41:00] | PaulWay: | To p1mp it out you probably need another $5000 – $9000. |

[09:41:00] | SlicerDicer-: | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_V8 btw PaulWay thats my car but I am going to replace the pictures on that with mine once I get a better camera to show all angles of that car :) |
[09:43:00] | PaulWay: | Ricerboys take their honda civic, steal GT and Nismo stickers to put on it, and spend $5000 lowering the thing so they have to breathe in when they go over the white lines. |
[09:43:00] | SlicerDicer-: | haha |

[09:44:00] | PaulWay: | Mind you, I never deliberatly try to piss ricerboys off because they're just plain FITH. |
[09:44:00] | SlicerDicer-: | ShockValue, yeah the S4 is pretty nice if its the new one that is the micro V8 |
[09:44:00] | ShockValue: | it is. |
[09:44:00] | SlicerDicer-: | awesome |
[09:45:00] | SlicerDicer-: | that micro V8 is incredible |
[09:45:00] | ShockValue: | sounds like its a turbine though, not a v8 :) |
[09:45:00] | SlicerDicer-: | its the size of the audi JT but a V8 |
[09:45:00] | SlicerDicer-: | damn it I know way to much about audi's :) |
[09:45:00] | PaulWay: | mchou: you could say that the WRX is the car ricerboys have wet dreams about owning. |
[09:46:00] | ShockValue: | i have the audi's poor cousin.. vw 1.8T |
[09:46:00] | SlicerDicer-: | ShockValue, hey the VW is nothing to sneeze at |
[09:46:00] | mchou: | PaulWay: bs. I've seen plenty riced up WRX |
[09:46:00] | SlicerDicer-: | they are really just as good as the audi without the fluff |
[09:46:00] | ShockValue: | which gets me around pretty quick.. but it's not an s4 :) |
[09:46:00] | SlicerDicer-: | hehe |
[09:47:00] | mchou: | PaulWay: in US $25K gets you new stock WRX |
[09:47:00] | ShockValue: | $!*!# this samba/cifs thing is killing me |
[09:47:00] | SlicerDicer-: | ShockValue, is yours the TDI? |
[09:47:00] | PaulWay: | mchou: of course – if you can afford the WRX, you can afford all the bolt-on optional extras to make you look all important. |
[09:47:00] | PaulWay: | ShockValue: what's up with samba? |
[09:47:00] | ShockValue: | tdi? no.. 1.8T. |
[09:48:00] | ShockValue: | well samba wont copy a file over 2 gigs.. and I cant get it to mount with cifs |
[09:48:00] | ShockValue: | mount error 5 = Input/output error |
[09:48:00] | ShockValue: | Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) |
[09:48:00] | mchou: | ShockValue: are you sure that's not a underlying fs issue? |
[09:48:00] | ShockValue: | i just cranked the security on my 2k3 server way down (which i didnt need to do with smb) but it still no workie |
[09:49:00] | ShockValue: | mchou: quite.. ive tested it every way i can think of.. i currently have a 12Gig file sitting locally on the NTFS drive that is shared |
[09:49:00] | PaulWay: | ShockValue: are you copying to FAT32? |
[09:49:00] | mchou: | and? where you copying to? |
[09:49:00] | ShockValue: | wehen i copy a 3 gig file via a smb mount, it fails in the exact same place every time.. 2 gigs and change |
[09:49:00] | ShockValue: | PaulWay: ntfs |
[09:49:00] | PaulWay: | Hmmm, no, NTFS, eh? |
[09:50:00] | ShockValue: | so i thought i would try cifs... but it wont let me mount |
[09:50:00] | mchou: | ShockValue: ntfs to ntfs?? |
[09:50:00] | PaulWay: | You could always split it, copy the parts, and then join it on the Windows machine... |
[09:51:00] | ShockValue: | ntfs to ntfs works fine. (copied a 4 gigger from my "C" drive to the "Z" drive and no issues) when i copy that same file to the mounted samba folder it craps out at 2g |
[09:51:00] | mchou: | PaulWay: screw that, that's ghetto |
[09:51:00] | mchou: | mounted sambe has what fs? |
[09:51:00] | mchou: | samba* |
[09:51:00] | ShockValue: | eh.. lets see |
[09:51:00] | PaulWay: | mchou: if it works, it works :-) |
[09:52:00] | PaulWay: | It doesn't solve the problem, but if it's urgent, it gets it done. |
[09:52:00] | ShockValue: | "root" is reiserfs. /media is the smb share |
[09:52:00] | mchou: | PaulWay: what if you wanna stream a video? |
[09:52:00] | PaulWay: | ShockValue: what happens if you copy the 12GB file from samba to local? |
[09:52:00] | PaulWay: | mchou: then you solve the problem :-) |
[09:52:00] | ShockValue: | PaulWay: good question, havent tried that one |
[09:52:00] | ShockValue: | although i did create a 4 gig file in /tmp to prove that it would work |
[09:53:00] | ShockValue: | not copied though |
[09:53:00] | mchou: | ShockValue: what distro? |
[09:53:00] | PaulWay: | I seriously doubt it, but it's always possible (your version of) Samba has a 2GB limit in there somewhere. |
[09:53:00] | ShockValue: | as i understand it, mounting a samba share from fstab is a function of the kernel, not smbmount.. but neither works, ive tried it both ways |
[09:54:00] | ShockValue: | gentoo |
[09:54:00] | mchou: | haha!! |
[09:54:00] | ShockValue: | current samba version is 3.0.11 |
[09:54:00] | mchou: | get Cardoe aka "Einstein" in here |
[09:54:00] | PaulWay: | ShockValue: You could also try doing something like dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/test bs=4096c count=5000000 |
[09:54:00] | PaulWay: | And see if creating a file (rather than copying it) causes a problem. |
[09:55:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: Are you having trouble with 2GB support? Sorry, came in late. |
[09:55:00] | mchou: | PaulWay: that's ghetto too. dd may not be LFS |
[09:55:00] | ShockValue: | NightMonkey: yes |
[09:55:00] | PaulWay: | mchou: your attitude is a bit in-my-face... |
[09:55:00] | mchou: | PaulWay: so? |
[09:55:00] | ShockValue: | cmon, dont argue, just help me out :D |
[09:55:00] | PaulWay: | mchou: relax, max, no points to prove here... :-) |
[09:56:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: I run Gentoo, too. You need to compile with the Large File Support CFLAGS. I thought that samba's ebuild did that, but let me look. One sec. |
[09:56:00] | ShockValue: | NightMonkey: you have any insight? |
[09:56:00] | mchou: | haha!! |
[09:56:00] | mchou: | lol. |
[09:56:00] | ShockValue: | NightMonkey: omg.. that would rule |
[09:56:00] | mchou: | gentoo lusers |
[09:56:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: One sec. |
[09:56:00] | PaulWay: | Yeah, that would do it :-) |
[09:57:00] | mchou: | LFS==Large File Support |
[09:57:00] | ShockValue: | I'd go through a little extra work (like this) anyday in order to be able to modularly control my system. |
[09:57:00] | mchou: | lol |
[09:57:00] | PaulWay: | This makes me think of that guy that was in here a couple of days ago that was saying "All linux distros are essentially the same"... |
[09:57:00] | mchou: | ShockValue: I'm sure you like your weekends wasted |
[09:57:00] | PaulWay: | It was such obvious flamebait I couldn't be bothered setting fire to em. |
[09:57:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: Did 2GB work for you previously, and not now? There was a new update to 3.0.20b recently. |
[09:57:00] | ShockValue: | NightMonkey: dunno, never tried it.. Im just getting into ripping my DVD's :) |
[09:58:00] | ShockValue: | mchou: tinking with shit is my hobbie.. its not wasted :) |
[09:58:00] | PaulWay: | Should I just start mtd as a background process in /etc/rc.d/rc.local or is there a better way? |
[09:58:00] | PaulWay: | ShockValue: The best thing about Linux is the unlimited opportunity to learn :-) |
[09:58:00] | ShockValue: | PaulWay: i dont know the best way.. i just start it in my .xinitrc |
[09:59:00] | ShockValue: | NightMonkey: im looking for a LFS use flag or something, but dont see it.... what am i missing? |
[09:59:00] | PaulWay: | ShockValue: I'm sure mchou would say that was 'ghetto' |
[10:00:00] | xris (n=xris@xris.forevermore.net) Quit ("l8r")
[10:00:00] | PaulWay: | I'd just say it's unorthodox. |
[10:00:00] | ShockValue: | i was hoping for a /etc/init.d/mtd personally.. but no such luck |
[10:00:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: I've had a bug open for *two years+* to have Gentoo fix this with a USE flag... |
[10:00:00] | mchou: | haha!! |
[10:01:00] | ShockValue: | NightMonkey: so, how do i work around it in the mean time? so i need to hack the ebuild or something? :) |
[10:01:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: However, another question. Are you mounting a partition with sambafs? |

[10:01:00] | PaulWay: | mchou: I can see a good reason why not to use gentoo... :-) |
[10:02:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: I found something on the forums – try adding "lfs" to the mount options. |
[10:02:00] | ShockValue: | I can see reasons not to use Gentoo too.. just not enough to make me switch to somethign else. |
[10:03:00] | ShockValue: | rw,lfs,stuff... like such? |
[10:03:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: Exactly |
[10:03:00] | SlicerDicer-: | well damn it I knew it was going to happen lol |
[10:04:00] | PaulWay: | Every distro has its good and bad points. It's all about what you're used to. |
[10:04:00] | PaulWay: | I'm sure if I had to use gentoo I'd be stumbling over emerge and ebuild and ewhatever for ages before I got it right. |
[10:04:00] | ShockValue: | im very much into "modular" or "granular"... gentoo fits that mentality |
[10:05:00] | SlicerDicer-: | I hate it when X dies lol |
[10:05:00] | PaulWay: | I learnt the hard way not to use the testing and development yum/up2date repositories on Fedora... |

[10:06:00] | ShockValue: | well at least i got /some/ help here tonight.. i've been fighting with this for like 3 days :) |
[10:06:00] | mwtb: | I'm getting logs full of this: "ivtv0 warning: ENC Stream 0 OVERFLOW #12397: Stealing a Buffer, 512 currently allocated". The only thing I can see on the web suggests drive space as the cause, but all my drives have several gigs free. |

[10:07:00] | ShockValue: | NightMonkey: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-172776-h . . . mba+lfs.html |
[10:08:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: Yep, that's the one. Mine was a "dupe", but the same coverage. |
[10:08:00] | ShockValue: | \/\/()()+ and stuff |
[10:09:00] | NightMonkey: | Yeah, most apps that I've seen don't really tell you what's going on (beacuse if they did, that would mean the devs would have known about it, and fixed it). |
[10:10:00] | NightMonkey: | But, yes, LFS in Gentoo is supported in a very haphazard way at present. |
[10:10:00] | NightMonkey: | It's ebuild by ebuild. |
[10:11:00] | ShockValue: | i just added 480G to my array.. im excited to fill it up with my dvds :) |
[10:11:00] | NightMonkey: | http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14606 *sigh* – and it is misfiled. |
[10:11:00] | ShockValue: | it's all been music thus far, so i never noticed any file size limitations |
[10:11:00] | PaulWay: | ShockValue: That's a very naughty amount of storage... |
[10:12:00] | ShockValue: | PaulWay: we outgrew the drives at work, so I got em cheap :) |
[10:12:00] | PaulWay: | Geez, ShockValue, where do you work? Can I have some? :-) |
[10:13:00] | PaulWay: | I knew a guy in Melbourne who had a great rort set up. |
[10:13:00] | PaulWay: | He was working for a security video storage distributor, and they bought these hard-disk recorder units from Japan. |
[10:14:00] | ShockValue: | we use hard drive backups at work. we upgraded to 160G drives for our daily's, so I scammed the 120G's |
[10:14:00] | PaulWay: | They came with one 80GB drive (this was back in the day when 20GB hard disks wer standard in PCs). |
[10:14:00] | PaulWay: | And they'd whip that out and replace it with four 160GB drives. |
[10:14:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: Were there any errors when you mounted that share? Anything in the logs? |
[10:14:00] | NightMonkey: | ShockValue: (with the lfs option) |
[10:15:00] | PaulWay: | Since the units were imported as a unit, no-one ever thought to ask where the old 80GB drives were going... |
[10:15:00] | ShockValue: | havent tried it yet, my wife is watching a show :( |
[10:15:00] | ShockValue: | PaulWay: nice :) |
[10:15:00] | PaulWay: | ShockValue: I know that feeling... |
[10:15:00] | ShockValue: | im trying it locally, brb |
[10:15:00] | PaulWay: | And he was charging what a 60GB drive was worth for them. |
[10:16:00] | PaulWay: | Which was nice, and all, except for the fact that he was getting them for ___FREE___ |
[10:16:00] | ShockValue: | good profit margin there |
[10:16:00] | PaulWay: | That's what suxored. |
[10:17:00] | PaulWay: | Geez, fiiiiinally! |
[10:17:00] | PaulWay: | I can now actually get my Rio Karma to talk to my Fedora machine. |
[10:17:00] | PaulWay: | It kept on saying Database already in use, which was patently untrue. |
[10:18:00] | ShockValue: | PaulWay: whoa.. how? i have one of those too |
[10:18:00] | ShockValue: | i have it hooked up to my wifes windows machine so i can fill it up |
[10:19:00] | PaulWay: | ShockValue: I go way back with empeg. I've got a Mark I. |

[10:25:00] | Cagochi: | Hi |
[10:25:00] | PaulWay: | ShockValue: But if you've already got OGGs then it's great to avoid Windows. |
[10:25:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: Howdy. |
[10:25:00] | PaulWay: | Cagochi: Hi back! |
[10:26:00] | Cagochi: | I was wondering if you two encode to really high mjpeg bitrates like 16000000 with your mpeg2 encoder cards.... mine is a hauppauge 500mce, and my video is too big bitrate wise to be put on a dvd. |
[10:26:00] | Cardoe: | so turn it down? |
[10:27:00] | PaulWay: | I either take whatever comes straight from my DVB cards, or I transcode it into something of a sensible size. |
[10:27:00] | PaulWay: | But what's your problem exactly? |
[10:27:00] | Cagochi: | Well, it was only shown on TV once... it's a TV series that was cancelled. |
[10:27:00] | Cagochi: | I have the copy I made. |
[10:27:00] | Cagochi: | most of the episodes are 720x480 at the insane encoding rate. |
[10:27:00] | BaZiL: | anybody know a good place for a guide for setting up mythtv on a fedora box ? .. i just cant seem to understand how i should set up the videocard .. i dont know what /dev/ i should use |
[10:28:00] | PaulWay: | It sounds like the best plan is to make a copy at the resolution and bitrate that DVD will take... |
[10:28:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: That's too high. |
[10:28:00] | PaulWay: | BaZiL: the very best: http://www.wilsonet.com/mythtv/ |
[10:28:00] | PaulWay: | Read and be enlightened! |
[10:28:00] | PaulWay: | What's your actual problem? |
[10:28:00] | Cagochi: | PaulWay: my exact problem is making a dvd filesystem. I extracted the segments with avidemux2, and now I'm using transcode on the commandline with this string " transcode -i 1.mpg --export_prof dvd-ntsc -o tlf01.mpg" |
[10:29:00] | Cagochi: | PaulWay: am I on the right track? |
[10:29:00] | BaZiL: | ive come so far .. that i have set up hte mythtv .. and are now suppose to run the mythtv-setup |
[10:29:00] | BaZiL: | but i dont know what videounit to set . |
[10:29:00] | BaZiL: | there is notting in the list to choose from .. i can however type the adress but i dont know witch |
[10:29:00] | PaulWay: | My understanding is that you have to make an ISO image with the right file system contents, and then you burn it to DVD and it works. |
[10:29:00] | Cagochi: | BraZiL: what's your encoder card? do you have video4linux in your kernel? |
[10:30:00] | BaZiL: | i have a pwr 350 |
[10:30:00] | PaulWay: | I believe there's some tool to create the right file system and allow you to import MPEG2 to it, but I haven't tried it. |
[10:30:00] | PaulWay: | BaZiL: I thought the pvr350 was supported natively in mythtv? |
[10:30:00] | BaZiL: | and dont know if i have video4linux in my kernel . how do i check that |
[10:30:00] | PaulWay: | Just change the card type in the card settings of mythtv-setup. |
[10:30:00] | BaZiL: | yea .. i thought so to |
[10:30:00] | Cardoe: | BaZiL: you need the ivtv driver |
[10:30:00] | Cagochi: | PaulWay that's what some of the docs I read said too. I tried it with the 1.mpg you see in the command above... and the dvd filesystem creation failed because the bitrate was out of spec for DVDv1.0 specification. |
[10:31:00] | PaulWay: | Aaaaahhhhh. |
[10:31:00] | Cardoe: | Cagochi: transcode it to the proper bitrate |
[10:31:00] | Cardoe: | Cagochi: try using nuvexport |
[10:31:00] | BaZiL: | cardode .. i have made yum install ivtv .. |
[10:31:00] | BaZiL: | so that is from what i can see installed |
[10:31:00] | PaulWay: | Cagochi: I think you need transcode's '-w videobitrate' option. |
[10:31:00] | Cardoe: | BaZiL: modprobe ivtv |
[10:31:00] | PaulWay: | man transcode and look for bitrate options. |
[10:31:00] | Cagochi: | nuvexport currently fails for me :( I'm on Gentoo I don't know if nuv export is failing because of newer versions of ffmpeg or what... |
[10:31:00] | BaZiL: | heheh .. ivtv not found |
[10:32:00] | PaulWay: | Cagochi: I want to make a VCD for a friend, and I'm going to have to learn how to do these things too :-) |
[10:32:00] | BaZiL: | fuck .. i have done yum install ivtv |
[10:32:00] | BaZiL: | anyone wanna go in have a look what i have done wrong ? |
[10:32:00] | Cardoe: | Cagochi: file a bug? |
[10:32:00] | Cagochi: | I'm hoping --export_prof dvd-ntsc will make it proper. I am now transcoding a 9 minute video segment... we'll see if it burns. |
[10:33:00] | Cagochi: | Cardoe: no... I didn't file a bug because I really should --emptytree world before I know what the bug probably is. |
[10:33:00] | Cagochi: | BaZiL: i think ivtv depends on video for linux... but I could be wrong. |
[10:34:00] | Cardoe: | Cagochi: well what's failing? |
[10:34:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: Your problem seems to stem from the high bitrates, and PaulWay gave you some tips... |
[10:35:00] | Cagochi: | If I remember correctly, nuvexport goes through the selection menu and shows the progress bar that it's ready to work. Then top shows that mythtranscode is using 100% cpu.... but the progress bar indicator at the nuvexport command line fails to show progress. |

[10:36:00] | PaulWay: | What I'm annoyed about is that the program I want to convert to VCD was on MythTV and I used nuvexport to transcode it to XVid. Now I need to convert it back to MPEG for VCD... |
[10:36:00] | ** PaulWay slaps forehead **
[10:37:00] | PaulWay: | Cagochi: in that nuvexport problem (above), does the output file grow? |
[10:38:00] | ShockValue: | dag nab it.. i think i may have hozed up my security settings on my windows machine trying to get this to work |
[10:39:00] | ShockValue: | i can connect just fine (with lfs, or not) but it gives me permission denied when i try to do anything with is (uncluding "ls") |

[10:39:00] | PaulWay: | No, it writes to the output file directly. |
[10:40:00] | PaulWay: | It sounds like your receiving process (probably ffmpeg) isn't starting up. |
[10:40:00] | PaulWay: | Have you tried running nuvexport --debug? |

[10:58:00] | Cagochi: | But... in this video project I'm doing.... FWIW, my workflow captures in mythtv at the maximum bitrate. Then I extract the video and audio streams I want to keep using avidemux2. then I mplex that stream together. The part of the workflow I just learned tonight seems to be to take what I got from mplex the first time, and run it through transcode with the options I mentioned earlier. |
[10:58:00] | NightMonkey: | whoah |
[10:59:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: Hmm, doesn't avidmux2 offer re-encoding options? Or am I remembering incorrectly? |
[10:59:00] | Cagochi: | Since this is working, I mplex the video and audio streams that came from transcode back together with mplex.... if I'm lucky, this will burn a dvd tonight as soon as I finish transcoding the last 3 segments of my video. |
[11:00:00] | Cagochi: | NightMonkey: I didn't look at avidemux2 that closely.... I only needed it to cut segments between keyframes. Maybe it will do all that. |
[11:00:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: Why do you need to capture at such a high bitrate? DVDs don't support that high a constant bitrate, IIRC. |
[11:02:00] | BaZiL: | anybody wanna help me out installing ivtv .. it doesnt seem to work with the guide im using .. fedora core |
[11:02:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: I made a DVD burning HOWTO, perhaps this will help: https://www.ilikelinux.com/howto/pvr3502dvd |
[11:02:00] | Cagochi: | NightMonkey: DVD is just one stop for converging the captured video... The captured video from the tuner I want to use to make appropriately sized copies... 1 for a vlc stream over residential broadband internet.... 2 for a small clip to be placed in a flash movie... 3 for the progressive frames at a highbitrate that look great on a monitor. |
[11:02:00] | Cagochi: | NightMonkey: Thanks man! |
[11:03:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: Well, you are, of course, free to set them as you wish, but my High Quality profile does a great job. I guess if you *absolutely* *never* can see any mpeg artifacts (other than the mpeg artifacts your tv provider has ;) ), then that's the only way. |
[11:04:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: Also, for task 1, check out http://mythstreamtv.sf.net/ . I love it. |
[11:05:00] | Cagochi: | NightMonkey: why haven't I seen a portage ebuild for that? |
[11:06:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: And, for 3, As long as I play with deinterlacing, the high profile looks great, too. However, older, '70s/'60s TV shows (with lots of film "grainyness") need the high profile to not get all blocky. |
[11:06:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: Well, it actually mangels the mythweb source code, and Portage can't really easily overwrite another packages files, if I'm not mistaken. |

[11:15:00] | Cagochi: | NightMonkey: well, the bitrate doesn't sove the problem... I think it may be a source issue. Color also looks bad on silk ties. |

[11:19:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: Gotcha. |
[11:21:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: I'd check for any interference near the cable (power blocks, power strips, etc.), and see if re-seating the cable and screwing it down fairly tight doesn't improve things. I know, silly, but I've been bested by simple things... ;) |
[11:21:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: Sometimes a just-off cable seating can cause subtle picture composition changes. |
[11:22:00] | NightMonkey: | Cagochi: And, low quality cables... |

[11:23:00] | Cagochi: | NightMonkey: I'm happy to be using RG-6 from Comcast... and the line is less than 12 feet from the incoming network box here at my building. Unfortunately there is probably 1200watts of power going on down there near these same cables. |

[13:29:00] | Ribs: | yet .12 works great with it (?) |
[13:30:00] | Dagmar: | You need to do a make clean on your lirc source and rebuild |

[13:32:00] | Ribs: | you can tell it what frequency to look for |

[13:32:00] | Ribs: | then you just keep clicking the up button until you get a picture :) |
[13:32:00] | mafkees: | yeah, the problem is I don't know the frequencies for the channels |
[13:33:00] | Ribs: | well, start at the lowest frequency, then keep pressing up |
[13:33:00] | mafkees: | that's why I want some kind of scanning going on |
[13:33:00] | Ribs: | this is how I did it |
[13:33:00] | mafkees: | with mplayer ? |
[13:33:00] | Dagmar: | Ribs: If it's refusing to load hte modules, then it's probably *not* or you're somehow loading a stale copy of the kernel modules. |
[13:33:00] | Ribs: | yeah, you have mplayer streaming what your TV card is showing, then use ptune to actually find the frequency |
[13:33:00] | Dagmar: | Linux mythtv 2.6.13.4 <-- just built it and loaded lirc_serial |
[13:34:00] | Ribs: | Dagmar: dmsg showed up a lot of error about missing symbols. As far as I know, the 'gentoo' way of upgrading modules for new kernels is just to re-merge them |
[13:34:00] | Dagmar: | Yeah, well, I don't use Gentoo. |
[13:34:00] | Ribs: | I know it finds the correct kernel source, as the ebuild shows which one it's running from... |
[13:34:00] | Dagmar: | ..and I'm trying very hard not to say "it's something screwey they're doing" |
[13:34:00] | Ribs: | So yeah, it's probabily yet another Gentoo bug... |
[13:35:00] | Ribs: | heh heh, Gentoo is screwey sometimes :> |
[13:35:00] | Dagmar: | On the bright side there's a really sweet setup.sh dialog-driven script in the lirc source package. |
[13:35:00] | Dagmar: | Just run it, poke at the options a bit, and let 'er rip |
[13:36:00] | Ribs: | I always prefer to use packages when I can |
[13:36:00] | Ribs: | 2.6.13 doesn't seem to have anything vital I want anyway, so I'll stick with .12 |

That all worked fine, but the IP address changed. Now, she gets a can't connect to database error. I had her change the DB address in mythtv-setup but that didn't fix it. I had her try to connect to the mythconvrg database from the command line and it gives... |

This is running gentoo. Any ideas, or should I try the mysql channel? |

[22:42:00] | jd86: | and all the work they've done to the kernel since those were in use would make building the interfacedodad difficult |
[22:42:00] | jd86: | so its like i can either have the tuner or the tv out. |
[22:42:00] | jd86: | hmm |
[22:45:00] | jd86: | maybe i can do frontend/backend on different machines |
[22:45:00] | jd86: | i wonder what the minimal is for frontend |

[23:28:00] | twisted_one: | hey guys, I know many of you use transcode so I was thinking you might be able to help... I have a .avi file (Im assuming its mpeg4 of some sort) and I want to convert it to be playable on a set top dvd box (mpeg2 IIRC). I've been reading this manpage for transcode for about 30 minutes and I feel overwhelmed.... any advice/suggestions? |

[23:34:00] | FunkyELF_: | before I transcode a program I can open the .nuv file in windows because it is an mpeg2 file since I have a pvr 500. After I transcode I can't open it in windows anymore. I think I was using mpeg4. I have almost all codecs on that windows machine since I installed the k-lite codec pack. |
[23:35:00] | FunkyELF_: | I only saw one option "begin transcoding" when I went to watch recordings and right the right arrow. It didn't ask me what to use. I did set up that "From mpeg2" to use mpeg4 |

[23:40:00] | Captain_Murdoch: | FunkyELF_: it uses mpeg4 but in a nuppel .nuv container so you need something like dsmyth to play it under windows or you can just use nuvexport to create a .avi file with mpeg4 content. |
[23:40:00] | FunkyELF_: | okay...and what is mpeg4 exactly? Divx, xvid? |
[23:41:00] | Captain_Murdoch: | those are both variations on it I believe. |

[23:43:00] | Captain_Murdoch: | FunkyELF_: if you use dsmyth it should play the resulting file I think, otherwise you need nuvexport. |

[23:44:00] | Captain_Murdoch: | jd86: no, it flags commercials, it won't automatically remove them from the file unless you setup a User Job to copy the commecial skip list to the cutlist and then transcode. |
[23:44:00] | jd86: | Captain_Murdoch: well do you know how to do the rest? |
