[01:00:00] simon_c: Hi All. I've a probelm getting X to work right on the TVout of my graphics card. Text mode looks fine, but when I run "startx" (or anythink that starts x) I just get a green screen.
[01:00:00] simon_c: hw is a P2–350 with an ATI Rage Pro II-MPEG grapics card.
[01:00:00] LasseL (n=lasse@0x503fbec4.ronxx2.adsl-dhcp.tele.dk) Quit (Success)
[01:00:00] simon_c: (it's hopefully going to be a front end box)
[01:00:00] comcipher: do you ahve a monitor hooked up as well or just a TV to the TVout?
[01:00:00] simon_c: all worked fine with a VGA monitor.
[01:01:00] simon_c: but there's only the TV hooked up now.
[01:01:00] PaulWay: I know this is slightly off topic, but has anyone got experience setting up and connecting NFS shares?
[01:01:00] simon_c: PaulWay: Yep. What's the problem ?
[01:01:00] emes (n=emes@pdpc/supporter/student/emes) Quit ("Leaving")
[01:02:00] PaulWay: I've allowed the appropriate traffic through iptables, and I've set up /etc/exports correctly (using FC4's system-config-nfs)
[01:02:00] PaulWay: but when I try to do a mount on the remote machine I get "Permission denied" by the remote machine.
[01:03:00] simon_c: do you see anything in the server's logs ?
[01:03:00] PaulWay: The nfsnobody user has permission to see the directory in question on the server.
[01:03:00] PaulWay: And I'm using the option to smash all access down to the nfsnobody user.
[01:03:00] PaulWay: look in dmesg, is that right?
[01:03:00] simon_c: tail -f /var/log/messages
[01:03:00] PaulWay: or just tail /var/log/messages
[01:04:00] comcipher: simon_c: have you checked your xF86config or xorg.conf files?
[01:04:00] PaulWay: Ah, not exported.
[01:05:00] PaulWay: I thought if I had /opt exported then remote users could mount /opt/subpath/dir – no?
[01:05:00] simon_c: comcipher: xorg.conf. What would I be checking for ?
[01:05:00] simon_c: PaulWay: *IF* they are on the same file system.
[01:05:00] simon_c: but if /opt/subpath/dir is a differnet disk/partition, no.
[01:05:00] PaulWay: Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh! *is enlightened*
[01:06:00] comcipher: simon_c: making sure the screens are all setup properly. What distro are you running?
[01:06:00] PaulWay: That'll do it.
[01:06:00] simon_c: suse9.3
[01:06:00] PaulWay: Hmmm – no, actually, /opt/music/stream is part of /opt – it's /opt/video that's a different disk.
[01:07:00] PaulWay: simon_c: what are you seeing in the /var/log/xorg.0.log or whatever?
[01:07:00] simon_c: the TVout isn't a seperate screen. it's just another output of the same screen. I don't think cards this old were dual head :)
[01:07:00] PaulWay: Hang on, afk.
[01:07:00] comcipher: simon_c: I'm not terribly familiar with suse, you could check if anyone has made any example config files for it. For example, i'm on knoppmyth (debian) and I ended up using an example nvidia config file
[01:07:00] comcipher: I was having a bitch of a time getting it to run correctly
[01:08:00] comcipher: the config file I used fixed everything
[01:08:00] simon_c: comcipher: :-) Trying to track down log files now.
[01:09:00] simon_c: comcipher: Normally, you just use sax2 to configure the display. And normally, the TVout "just works" I'm half thinking I've got a bug with this card, which will be a PITA.
[01:10:00] comcipher: I have an nvidia card and it should have "just worked" but it didn't. To this day i'm still not sure why it was messed up
[01:11:00] comcipher: things in linux tend to be a pain in the ass from time to time
[01:11:00] simon_c: My other box has an nvidia card, and that did work. this one ..........
[01:11:00] simon_c: comcipher: Yes :-(
[01:12:00] simon_c: I'm thinking the mode line is totally screwed for the TV, or the card just doesn't like the TVOUT.

[01:20:00] rage-: I just grabbed the latest SVN and was wondering if its known what might be keeping myth from locking onto channels that it could lock onto before

[01:21:00] m3avrck: i'm setting up Knoppmyth on a Pentium III 800 with a Hauppauge 350 ... only using this for display on a monitor, not using tv-out right now ... running the basic setup and then going into Knoppmyth and tv works on my monitor
[01:21:00] m3avrck: ... do i need to enable the setting "enable PVR 350 tv out and hardware encoding" ? ... does the basic setup make use of the hardware encoding? i've tried the iptv drivers but nothing seems to work with those but not sure if they aren't working because im not actually using tvout right now

[01:31:00] NightBird: not haveing it enabled means it still uses hardware encoding, it just doesn't output to the tv-out

[01:37:00] PatrickDK: there are documents about it on websites
[01:38:00] PatrickDK: you need to modify one of the regs
[01:39:00] Goldfisch: Is GLX needed to playback stuff on MythTV?
[01:39:00] PatrickDK: no
[01:40:00] PatrickDK: it just helps keep any flickering from happening
[01:40:00] PatrickDK: for better overall quality
[01:41:00] Goldfisch: I updated to latest SVN release today, and when trying to play a show, got a blue screen. Sound was okay.

[03:05:00] JaPh-FleX: anyone happen to know if its possible to split off which monitor myth shows the menu/guide/cd covers on and which monitor gets fed the video?
[03:05:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX: No, there is nothing in there to control that

[03:06:00] JaPh-FleX: patrick: what do you mean?

[03:07:00] PatrickDK: setup X on your normal video card
[03:07:00] JaPh-FleX: what if I just have a geforce set up for dual-head
[03:07:00] JaPh-FleX: oh, I see
[03:07:00] PatrickDK: tell it your using the 350 for output
[03:07:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX: No
[03:07:00] JaPh-FleX: damnit, that's just stupid
[03:07:00] JaPh-FleX: I have this kickass touchscreen and I cant actually use it
[03:07:00] PatrickDK: you could write some wrappers for mplayer
[03:07:00] JaPh-FleX: yeah, I was hoping to avoid hacking the code, guess I will
[03:08:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX: None of the menus would be available while avideo is playing anyway
[03:08:00] JaPh-FleX: that's what bugs me
[03:08:00] JaPh-FleX: why can't I have my tv playing, and the other screen showing a tv guide
[03:08:00] JaPh-FleX: or a slide show
[03:08:00] GreyFoxx: Plus myth doesn't accept mouse presses so the touch screen wont be usable to control the menus directly
[03:08:00] ** JaPh-FleX cant be the first to think of this **
[03:09:00] PatrickDK: heh, I wouldn't use that, but I would love to be able to use a tabletpc to control it
[03:09:00] JaPh-FleX: grey: that I can code in, I think
[03:09:00] PatrickDK: or a remote with lcd that had 2 way sync
[03:09:00] JaPh-FleX: here, http://www.iuneed.com
[03:09:00] JaPh-FleX: check out the x15
[03:10:00] GreyFoxx: There is going to be a ui redesign which will allow for the video to play while menus are in use. But I doubt they would have anything in there to display menus on a seperate screen. But of course you can add that on your own
[03:10:00] JaPh-FleX: grey: why wouldn't that just be coded in?
[03:10:00] JaPh-FleX: I mean, its one more DB table, for each screen, put in a monitor #
[03:10:00] PatrickDK: oh heh, my computer is going bee 200' away from my screen
[03:11:00] briand: PatrickDK: okay.. so i stopped X11, shutdown mythbackend, and it still won't rmmod ivtv
[03:11:00] JaPh-FleX: pat: yeah, but that makes a sweet component in my stereo stack
[03:11:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX: I didn't say it wont, just I don't expect it. Noone who actually submits code has mentioned a desire for that sort of thing
[03:11:00] JaPh-FleX: im somewhat tempted to hack it in
[03:11:00] GreyFoxx: Of course someone might very well do it
[03:12:00] PatrickDK: heh, my stereo stack is going be 200' away, nothing in the room except inwall speakers and wallmounted lcd
[03:12:00] briand: stadium seating, as well?  :)
[03:12:00] JaPh-FleX: its not really that hard, youre just launching mplayer anyway, just launch it to a different x session
[03:12:00] PatrickDK: briand, na, in a living room?
[03:12:00] GreyFoxx: My home theatre room will have a remote, my touchscreen control panel and thye projector. nothing more
[03:13:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX: Uhhh Myth has an internal player.
[03:13:00] JaPh-FleX: and how do you make the touchscreen control panel work?: that's what im trying to do
[03:13:00] PatrickDK: I'm not liking projectors right now
[03:13:00] JaPh-FleX: grey: then why does it require mplayer?
[03:13:00] abarbaccia_ (n=abarbacc@69-162-20-65.stcgpa.adelphia.net) Quit (Success)
[03:13:00] briand: PatrickDK: actually, i saw a house under construction here... and their 'home theater' was being constructed over their four car garage... and did, indeed, include stadium seating
[03:13:00] GreyFoxx: for recordings. You can configure mythvideo and or mythdvd to use external players
[03:13:00] GreyFoxx: BUT you can also choose to use the internal one
[03:13:00] briand: (and a separate projection/control booth)
[03:13:00] PatrickDK: briand, I know, I know many people with it
[03:13:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX: Myth does not require mplayer
[03:13:00] JaPh-FleX: ah
[03:13:00] JaPh-FleX: ok, I must have read wrong
[03:13:00] GreyFoxx: I use the internal player for mythvideo as well
[03:13:00] PatrickDK: have some very rich customers
[03:13:00] JaPh-FleX: grey: how will your touch control panel work
[03:14:00] JaPh-FleX: if myth wont support it
[03:14:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX:I clone the myth screen onto it. Myth runs at 800x600 on the tv output. and I clone it on to my 1024x768 touch screenpanel
[03:14:00] GreyFoxx: I place control windows /buttons AROUND the 800x600 screen
[03:15:00] GreyFoxx: And send simulated keystroks
[03:15:00] briand: what brand of touchscreen are you using, GreyFoxx ?
[03:15:00] GreyFoxx: it also allows staqtus/monitoring windows on the screen
[03:15:00] JaPh-FleX: grey: then your touchpanel will also play the video, wont it?
[03:15:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX: Like this. This is a mockup I did when I first started: http://www.phaze.org/mythtv/controlpanel.png

[03:16:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX: Correct. It's a complete clone
[03:16:00] GreyFoxx: briand: One I pulled out of an old touchscreen Kiosk. EloSystems
[03:16:00] briand: ah.. okay.
[03:16:00] JaPh-FleX: grey: that's exactly what I want on mine, but how do you get around the fact that the touch is 1024x768, and the TV is 1890x1080 or whatever
[03:16:00] briand: we have dual touchscreens controlling all the audio/video where I work.
[03:17:00] JaPh-FleX: if I clone it, the tv shows a postage stamp
[03:17:00] GreyFoxx: I don't since my output to the TV/project isn't that high
[03:17:00] briand: and (if you had the money/time) the same could be set up at home to control one's home theater
[03:17:00] JaPh-FleX: ok, how would I? :)
[03:18:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX: No idea. It's not an issue I have to deal with so I've put no thought into that :) I clone the smaller TV onto the bigger touch screen. Not the other way around :)
[03:18:00] JaPh-FleX: yeah
[03:18:00] GreyFoxx: The first day I hooked it up : http://pics.phaze.org/?album=albums/2005/08-0 . . . nMythTV&
[03:18:00] JaPh-FleX: apparently im the only one with an HDTV trying this
[03:18:00] JaPh-FleX: everyone says clone it
[03:19:00] JaPh-FleX: ah, nice
[03:20:00] GreyFoxx: I've got it in a frame/box now
[03:20:00] PatrickDK: briand, did you unload lirc* modules?
[03:20:00] GreyFoxx: Gonna cut a hole and mount a USB hub in there for game controllers
[03:20:00] briand: no, should I have?
[03:20:00] JaPh-FleX: wow, youre goin all out
[03:20:00] PatrickDK: ya
[03:20:00] JaPh-FleX: I went simple
[03:20:00] JaPh-FleX: HTPC box, a receiver/amp
[03:21:00] JaPh-FleX: and a huge-ass HDTV
[03:21:00] briand: ah.. because lirc is using the remote on the pvr-350 card...
[03:21:00] JaPh-FleX: and 7.1 bose
[03:21:00] GreyFoxx: JaPh-FleX: This will sit right next to the couch. I'll likely write in some controlsfor controlling lights and such
[03:22:00] FITH: Hmm, are there debs of 0.18.1 out there that have been built since libqt3c102 went away?
[03:22:00] briand: i'll try it again after 10:00 local
[03:22:00] JaPh-FleX: oh, hehe, my remote already connects to the touch panel in the wall for that
[03:22:00] Surye: is SVN in flux, or could I use it?
[03:22:00] briand: (myth is recording Law & Order right now...
[03:23:00] GreyFoxx: Surye: I have no problem with svn (pvr250s + dvb)
[03:23:00] GreyFoxx: But most people having problems these days are dvb related
[03:23:00] rage-: Surye, I can't tune to all the channels right now with SVN that I could before with 18.1
[03:23:00] rage-: Surye, I can't lock onto the channels
[03:24:00] Surye: Hmm..
[03:24:00] FITH: or am I just better off not using the debs from dijkstra.csh.rit.edu?
[03:25:00] poonj: heyu guys
[03:25:00] poonj: if I build mythdvd

[03:31:00] GreyFoxx: It is in Canada
[03:31:00] briand: aha
[03:31:00] GreyFoxx: You have a month to go
[03:31:00] briand: similar to the american thanksgiving?
[03:31:00] GreyFoxx: Pretty much
[03:31:00] briand: cool
[03:32:00] JackPo: god
[03:32:00] JackPo: does MythTV work with HD3000 over analog cable?
[03:32:00] GreyFoxx: TD today, and nother tomorrow :)
[03:32:00] briand: the best part of thanksgiving is the following week's worth of leftovers!
[03:33:00] briand: turkey sandwiches
[03:33:00] briand: etc.
[03:33:00] GreyFoxx: I like the first meal. Yummmmm

[03:33:00] briand: as do I... but also like the next day's "open face" (hot) turkey sandwiches, with mashed potatoes, stuffing, etc...
[03:33:00] JackPo: anyone?
[03:34:00] GreyFoxx: JackPo: According to what I've read it can if you use the drivers from the pchdtv people. Not sure it will if you use the dvb drivers
[03:34:00] briand: then, the "regular" turkey sandwiches...
[03:34:00] GreyFoxx: But since I don't have one I can't confirm
[03:34:00] briand: and various turkey cassaroles...
[03:34:00] JackPo: oh
[03:34:00] JackPo: so the kernel drivers won't work
[03:34:00] JackPo: christ this is causing me some serious headaches
[03:35:00] GreyFoxx: JackPo: I don't know what kind of support is in the kernel for that card. Or is the analog portion just a bttv card ?
[03:36:00] JackPo: don't know.. :-\
[03:36:00] JackPo: right now I'm trying to use standard v4l drivesr
[03:36:00] JackPo: and it won't even detect any of the inputs
[03:37:00] GreyFoxx: That doesn't really suprise me
[03:37:00] rage-: GreyFoxx, do you have any signal lock problems?
[03:37:00] GreyFoxx: You could certainly try the pchdtv drivers or the dvb driver for that card
[03:37:00] GreyFoxx: rage-: Not one
[03:37:00] GreyFoxx: At least nothingI've seen in the last 2 weeks
[03:39:00] JackPo: is mythTV and v4l a very problematic combination?
[03:39:00] GreyFoxx: not really not
[03:39:00] GreyFoxx: no
[03:39:00] PatrickDK: works fine for me
[03:39:00] PatrickDK: just wish I could make it go at 5fps
[03:39:00] GreyFoxx: v4l requires more cpu, but other than that it's fine
[03:40:00] JackPo: damn how come I can't even more inputs
[03:40:00] JackPo: default input keeps saying :ERROR, No inputs found
[03:41:00] rage-: GreyFoxx, I can't tune to channels I could with 18.1 now :(

[04:06:00] Randall64: big purchases this week: new projector and case for my mythbox
[04:06:00] briand: hiya Randall
[04:07:00] Randall64: howdy
[04:08:00] briand: Asus makes a 'stereo profile' case, but it doesn't look (from the pictures) to have any ISA slots...
[04:08:00] Randall64: heh
[04:09:00] briand: yeah, kinda useless, for MythTV anyway
[04:09:00] ** Randall64 looks up asus **
[04:09:00] redf0x: why would you need ISA slots?
[04:09:00] briand: Asus makes the Pundit, which several are using for Myth
[04:09:00] briand: redf0x: for the tv card(s)

[04:09:00] redf0x: ISA... you mean PCI?

[04:11:00] Randall64: height is the only issue afaict
[04:12:00] Randall64: once it's heigh enough, there's plenty of room for pci slots in a stereo profile
[04:12:00] briand: true.. was thinking more of a "vcr height" or perhaps a little taller...
[04:12:00] briand: ..since the VCR can come out of that rack any time now. I never use it
[04:12:00] Randall64: low-profile is a pain
[04:13:00] briand: you can get a rack-mount computer, and that'd pretty much fit the bill...
[04:13:00] briand: but the cost on them is quite prohibitive
[04:13:00] Randall64: There are htpc cases, but I want to find some people like.
[04:14:00] Randall64: quiet, attractive, built-in iR, all that jazz
[04:14:00] briand: yup
[04:15:00] briand: of course, if IR isn't built-in, it's a no-brainer to wire up the hauppauge card's IR internally
[04:15:00] Randall64: I have to get it done this week if I can, to make the b-i-l jealous next w/e :)
[04:15:00] briand: heheh
[04:15:00] briand: well, as soon as commercial-flagging is done for Law & Order, I'm gonna attempt to install the 0.4.0 ivtv drivers (again)
[04:16:00] Randall64: I still don't know what I'm going to do for hdtv.
[04:16:00] briand: PatrickDK mentioned that ivtv may not rmmod because lirc is still loaded.

[04:17:00] briand: so I've done no DVD playing or recording, yet.
[04:18:00] Randall64: You have an hd display?
[04:18:00] briand: no.. just a 27" stereo TV (Zenith)
[04:18:00] briand: sound and video switched thru the Technics home theater receiver
[04:18:00] Randall64: not much need for it then, probably, but for eliminating hardware
[04:19:00] briand: not to play, no.. but I do want to archive (via DVD) some of the stuff I've recorded on Myth
[04:19:00] briand: a *lot* of the stuff I record is record-watch-erase.. but a few things I'd like to keep, long term
[04:20:00] briand: McCartney @ Red Square, Moody Blues in concert, etc.
[04:20:00] Randall64: I'm no satisfied with the quality I get from my bttv cards to actually burn anything to dvd.
[04:20:00] Randall64: not that is
[04:20:00] briand: I've been pretty impressed with what I've gotten from my PVR-350
[04:21:00] Randall64: yeah, the pvr cards are supposed to be nice
[04:21:00] briand: the true test, of course, will be burning to DVD, and seeing what it looks like in the regular DVD player
[04:21:00] briand: well, the "plus" of the 350 is that it has hardware MPEG encoding *and* decoding...
[04:21:00] Randall64: Actually, if you wait a bit, you'll probably see the end of single-function dvd players :)
[04:21:00] briand: so playing myth recordings take very little CPU.
[04:22:00] Randall64: yeah, but playback isn't too expensive, so the added cost seems to not be worth it
[04:22:00] briand: the most taxing thing my Myth box does is commercial-flagging... and, even at that, the CPU hasn't gone over 20%, if that.
[04:23:00] Randall64: My mythbox gets loaded up doing hq real-time divx
[04:23:00] mchou: briand: what cpu you got?
[04:23:00] Randall64: I could do w/o that though.
[04:23:00] briand: mchou: Pundit-R with a 2.4G Prescott processor
[04:23:00] briand: so, yeah, there's plenty of horsepower to do MPEG decoding in software...
[04:23:00] mchou: briand: bah, that's overkill for analog tv :)
[04:24:00] briand: mchou: true. but the Pundit-R was $99. The processor was $65, and the 500MB Ram was $30
[04:24:00] briand: why not??  ;)
[04:24:00] Randall64: man, that's cheap
[04:25:00] mchou: briand: not to mention warmer and louder than my vacuum cleaner
[04:25:00] Randall64: Can you swap out the P.S. for a quiet model?
[04:25:00] mchou: briand: but not a bad deal though :)
[04:25:00] briand: add in a $40 Sony DVD-R drive, a $109 350GB HD, and the PVR-350, and I've got a nice Myth box for very little money

[04:45:00] briand: there's no interface (yet) in Myth for the radio, is there??
[04:45:00] PatrickDK: no
[04:45:00] briand: i've heard talk of a MythFM, but I've yet to actually see it anywhere...
[04:45:00] PatrickDK: but you could make it a channel
[04:46:00] PatrickDK: input the fm freq manually
[04:46:00] PatrickDK: but either I don't get any fm stations
[04:46:00] PatrickDK: or it still don't work on my system
[04:46:00] briand: or go in and hack at the myth menus and make it look pretty...
[04:47:00] briand: my home theater receiver already has an am/fm radio built-in...
[04:47:00] PatrickDK: ya, so does mine
[04:47:00] PatrickDK: but the bedroom doesn't
[04:47:00] briand: and cd, dvd, myth, ps2, etc hooked thru it
[04:48:00] PatrickDK: and well, using onscreen freq setting would be nicer than using the remote to type in a freq to a receiver
[04:48:00] briand: okay, so if I were to now type 'init 5' at my ssh prompt on this machine, I should magically see the Fedora GUI login on the television again, yes?
[04:48:00] PatrickDK: I dunno, don't know how FC3 does it's stuff
[04:48:00] briand: or, for that matter... a "scan & store" function to auto-set some memories...
[04:49:00] briand: well, i can simply `shutdown now` and then go in there and fire it up, again.
[04:49:00] briand: should auto-load back into myth.
[04:49:00] PatrickDK: heh
[04:49:00] briand: the card auto-detected and installed fine under 0.4.0
[04:49:00] briand: recorded an mpeg stream test file from it
[04:50:00] briand: (the tuner was already set to the channel it last recorded from)
[04:50:00] briand: what dictates the order in which cards are found, by the driver?
[04:50:00] briand: physical location in the box?
[04:51:00] briand: (ie: PCI bus address)
[04:51:00] PatrickDK: pci channel
[04:51:00] PatrickDK: basically, depends on how the motherboard is layed out
[04:51:00] PatrickDK: and bios
[04:51:00] briand: well, won't take much juggling to figure it out, I'd guess... there's only two slots available on the MB
[04:51:00] briand: one will have the 350, the other the 500
[04:52:00] briand: I'd like to keep the 350 loading first... just so that everything that currently thinks of it as tuner 0 can continue thinking of it that way, and add the 500's tuners as tuner 1 and 2
[04:52:00] PatrickDK: you could make that easier on yourself
[04:53:00] PatrickDK: and just symlink it all
[04:53:00] PatrickDK: instead of using video0
[04:53:00] PatrickDK: use v0
[04:53:00] PatrickDK: and just match the right video? to v0
[04:53:00] briand: true...
[04:53:00] briand: but since there's only two slots, and two cards to go in them... I've got a 50–50 chance of getting it right the first try

[07:11:00] drb: this time, I installed linux-headers-VERSION package, and the lirc-modules-source and followed the instructions given
[07:11:00] comcipher: I know the reciever works, it's a homebrew from zapway.de and it works on my main windows box w/ WinLIRC
[07:12:00] drb: cool. Yeah, the one I'm using i built.
[07:12:00] drb: Cardoe: sounds like it. http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Firmware
[07:12:00] comcipher: So where should I start to get this damn thing working?
[07:12:00] Cardoe: drb: yeah that's what I was just reading
[07:13:00] drb: comcipher: are you using a debian kernel (from a linux-image-VERSION package)?
[07:13:00] comcipher: drb: Yes, it's a KnoppMyth system based on debian
[07:14:00] drb: cool.
[07:14:00] drb: with knoppmyth, it's roughly the same. if you run "lirc-reconfigure.sh", it'll unpack the knoppmyth kernel and the module source and try to build lirc
[07:14:00] drb: or... lirc-reconfig.sh ? something like that.
[07:14:00] comcipher: I tried that once but it didn't do anything
[07:15:00] drb: do a "cat `which lirc-reconnfig.sh`" and you'll see what it's up to.
[07:15:00] drb: basically, you need:
[07:15:00] drb: 1) an unpacked kernel tree that built your running kernel
[07:15:00] drb: 2) the lirc modules unpacked
[07:15:00] drb: 3) the debian magic build commandline to generate the .deb files
[07:15:00] drb: and that script does all that

[07:18:00] comcipher: "/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: lirc is broken or not fully installed"
[07:18:00] comcipher: then it goes into the script
[07:19:00] drb: do the source unpack commands. the script is skipping them because a directory was built, but the unpack was likely aborted
[07:20:00] drb: run the two tar commands from /usr/src and then try it again
[07:20:00] comcipher: ok, give me a second

[07:25:00] drb: I just hope it works!  :)
[07:25:00] comcipher: so what do I do after running the two tar commands
[07:26:00] drb: try the "dokg-reconfigure" stuff from the end of that script now
[07:27:00] drb: one of the screens will give you a list of things to run in /usr/src including a "debian/rules" command line.
[07:28:00] comcipher: give me this: "/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: lirc is broken or not fully installed"
[07:28:00] drb: hmpf
[07:28:00] comcipher: is there a way I can simply completly remove LIRC and rebuild the whole thing from scratch?

[08:52:00] FITH: Hmm.
[08:52:00] fryfrog: from last night
[08:52:00] FITH: Heh :)
[08:53:00] Krazylegz: Maybe I need a second Mythbox for testing things. I get nervous at the thought of my Mythbox not working for a few days.
[08:53:00] FITH: Hmm... maybe I'll mess with ivtv first and then go to svn-myth if I can't get this stable
[08:53:00] FITH: Krazylegz: That's what I'm thinking too :-/
[08:54:00] Cardoe: fryfrog: ivtv 0.4.0 is in Portage
[08:54:00] fryfrog: Krazylegz: easy fix, run db backups
[08:54:00] Cardoe: fryfrog: been in there long enough that it should come over an emerge --sync for ya.
[08:54:00] Cardoe: fryfrog: test it out?
[08:54:00] fryfrog: Cardoe: super, i just modified my ebuild in /usr/local/portage :)
[08:54:00] fryfrog: sure
[08:54:00] Cardoe: modified your ebuild for ivtv?
[08:54:00] mchou: Chutt recommends 3.8
[08:54:00] fryfrog: i have my own ebuild i was using for 0.3.8
[08:54:00] fryfrog: just bumped it to work with 0.4.0
[08:54:00] mchou: not 3.9.....
[08:55:00] Krazylegz: fryfrog: It's not the DB I'm worried about, it's the software configs.
[08:55:00] fryfrog: 3.9 sucked for me too :)
[08:55:00] Cardoe: mchou: there was no 0.3.9
[08:55:00] fryfrog: but it was "head svn"
[08:55:00] Cardoe: mchou: it was Chris Kennedy being a douche bag
[08:55:00] fryfrog: yes, there was on one of the 3 sites
[08:55:00] Fosten (n=Jill@24-48-130-196.pittpa.adelphia.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[08:55:00] Cardoe: mchou: and that's what Chutt didn't like
[08:55:00] fryfrog: Krazylegz: the software config is *in* the db :)
[08:55:00] Cardoe: fryfrog: yes. Chris Kennedy being a douche bag
[08:55:00] fryfrog: ah, yes :)
[08:55:00] Krazylegz: fryfrog: I mean ivtv.
[08:55:00] mchou: fryfrog: so giving up on air2pc QAM?
[08:56:00] mchou: fryfrog: or ATSC?
[08:56:00] fryfrog: mchou: yeah, i think on tuesday when i get a whole house fan i may hunt for an antenna
[08:56:00] mchou: lol
[08:56:00] fryfrog: i've been told that UHF/VHF aren't very strongly effected by trees
[08:56:00] mchou: bah.
[08:56:00] fryfrog: if it works, i'll probably have directv come out and tell me that they'd have to cut down half my trees for sat service :)
[08:56:00] Chutt: 4.0 good, 3.9 bad
[08:56:00] Krazylegz: Woo hoo!!
[08:57:00] fryfrog: i'm glad CK went to a "normal" naming system for the most part
[08:57:00] Chutt: it's not ck
[08:57:00] fryfrog: ck isn't doing the dev anymore?
[08:57:00] mchou: hans and franz :)
[08:58:00] fryfrog: will PUMP YOU UP!
[08:58:00] mchou: goona pump YOU up!
[08:58:00] fryfrog: ahha
[08:58:00] Chutt: cardoe, hey, don't bother with that db patch, if you had ever planned on doing it :p
[08:58:00] Chutt: cardoe, i'm going to go a different route, and make it obsolete.
[08:58:00] Krazylegz: Whoa. My CS Theory professor did that for pumping lemma.
[08:58:00] Cardoe: Chutt: k.
[08:59:00] Cardoe: I was hacking at things.
[08:59:00] Cardoe: I keep getting distracted
[08:59:00] Chutt: heh
[08:59:00] Chutt: suuure ya were :p
[08:59:00] Cardoe: and end up with half ass changes.
[08:59:00] mchou: Krazylegz: pumping lemma? WTH does that mean?
[08:59:00] Chutt: i'm going to write a little server app and have it talk to a sqlite db
[08:59:00] mchou: ohoh.....
[08:59:00] Chutt: slap some zeroconf on it, restrict it to myth stuff only
[08:59:00] fryfrog: unless lemma is a hot chick, i think i'll pass on knowing
[09:00:00] Cardoe: Chutt: cool
[09:00:00] mchou: Chutt: gasp! you're adding more dependencies?? :)
[09:00:00] Chutt: no, getting rid of mysql
[09:00:00] Chutt: sqlite's small enough to just include
[09:00:00] Cardoe: Chutt: gonna use the fd.o version or the Apple version?
[09:01:00] Chutt: cardoe, whatever's in mfd already
[09:01:00] Fosten: so does ivtv 0.4 replace both 0.2.x and 0.3.x?
[09:01:00] fryfrog: huh?
[09:01:00] Chutt: i think that's apple version based

[09:07:00] Fosten: so does ivtv 0.4 replace both 0.2.x and 0.3.x?
[09:07:00] Chutt: yes.
[09:08:00] mchou: so is there even an unstable ivtv branch any more, or that's just svn?
[09:08:00] Chutt: 0.5.0
[09:09:00] Chutt: all this information is on the website.
[09:09:00] mchou: ok.
[09:09:00] FITH: Hmm, so I'm starting from the right place? ivtv 0.4.0 + MythTV 0.18.1 + PVR-350 and the recomended firmware from http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Firmware  ?
[09:10:00] FITH: Or should I listen to the ivtv mailing list where they mention going to newer then 0.18.1 ?
[09:10:00] ** FITH is so confused :) **

[09:10:00] FITH: Hmm, I'll probably try rolling slowly ahead... I've never had this many hangs before
[09:10:00] fryfrog: though i think this is starting to change with 0.18.1+
[09:10:00] FITH: Cool!
[09:11:00] fryfrog: i mean, it started to change with versions over 0.18

[09:14:00] mchou: fryfrog: lol, ATSC is mostly UHF
[09:15:00] fryfrog: If a tree loses its leaves in the fall, reception behind it will improve dramatically. Many people get a TV for Christmas, and erect an antenna for it in January, and then wonder why it quit working in May. It.s the trees.
[09:15:00] fryfrog: oh :/
[09:15:00] mchou: fryfrog: exactly :)

[09:17:00] FITH: Hmm, with my old firmware that worked for the last year, my new setup stops playing after a few mins, and then won't play video again... a slight improvement from killing the machine but... yeah. Maybe it's time to wiggle the MythTV part of this :)
[09:18:00] Fosten: so if i have a pvr-500, should i upgrade to ivtv 0.4 or svn ivtv 0.5?
[09:18:00] FITH: Enough of this and I'll go back to the insanity that was making the unichrome graphics on the M10000 work :)

[14:32:00] PaulWay: Comparison of fryfrog's mother to a household implement :-)
[14:32:00] PaulWay: Anyone got any strong feelings about LVM vs 'software raid' (mdadm)?
[14:33:00] fryfrog: there is no "versus" in comparing them
[14:33:00] fryfrog: one is not the other, the other is not the one
[14:33:00] fryfrog: LVM is a way of intelligently spanning data accross dis-seperate volumes
[14:34:00] fryfrog: raid is a way of providing redundancy on similar drives
[14:34:00] PaulWay: Well, I went and combined my 250GB and 160GB disks using lvm today, and then I remembered I'd used md to do the raid on my work machine.
[14:34:00] fryfrog: you can run LVM on top of raid, lvm alone or raid alone
[14:35:00] fryfrog: there'd be no real way of combining a 250G and 160G drive w/o losing about 100G of "raided" space on the big one
[14:35:00] PaulWay: And just wanted to make sure that I hadn't done one of those forehead-slap-inducing things.
[14:35:00] PaulWay: Mmmm, that's sort of what I thought.
[14:35:00] fryfrog: just watch closely for a drive failure
[14:35:00] fryfrog: or a pending drive failure
[14:35:00] fryfrog: so you don't lose your data
[14:35:00] PaulWay: Now, what I want to check is: should I have enabled striping?
[14:35:00] PaulWay: Yeah, it's that backup thing that I'm worried about.
[14:36:00] fryfrog: striping would be a bad idea, it would only garentee you'd lose everything if *one* of the two drives failed
[14:36:00] fryfrog: at least w/ normal lvm, there is a chance you'll only lose what was on the one drive
[14:37:00] PaulWay: Yeah, that's the theory.
[14:38:00] PaulWay: I keep on thinking about how to make a RAID system that can take arbitrary disks and have arbitrary levels of data recovery.
[14:38:00] PaulWay: But the problem is that you generally get either an entire disk failing, or an entire sector, rather than the bit errors that error correcting codes are supposed to protect against.
[14:39:00] fryfrog: huh?
[14:40:00] PaulWay: Well, things like CDs have an error correcting code, so that you read 15 bits and that gives you 8 actual 'corrected' bits; but you can stand up to 7 of those bits (any 7) being bad before you don't get what was originally written.
[14:41:00] PaulWay: But if the whole sector fails, then no amount of bits nearby is going to save you from that.
[14:41:00] PaulWay: You want to distribute your backups across the disk, so that one sector is backed up multiple times.
[14:42:00] PaulWay: You could do it by using the free space on the disk – each disk block 'in use' would be redundantly backed up somewhere else, as space allowed.
[14:42:00] PaulWay: And the kernel process would make sure that those copies were on other disks, for example.
[14:43:00] PaulWay: Back to striping, btw, the nice thing about striping is that you get a performance boost...
[14:45:00] PaulWay: Anyway, how's things with you?

[17:20:00] simcop2387: mplayer needs to be able to do mythtv's time stretch
[17:20:00] simcop2387: sphing: for me i usually let them auto expire, but for dvd's its just an mplex away
[17:22:00] schultmc_ is now known as schultmc
[17:22:00] sphing: im burning to dvd the mpeg4 files
[17:22:00] sphing: i just want a place to store them... not make an actual dvd authored disc
[17:22:00] Lightnin: i like sphing's idea though of still having data in the database of where the file was offloaded to (another drive, dvd, etc). At that point you just need a data dvd (compared to reencoding for dvd)
[17:23:00] sphing: ... and so was born mytharchive
[17:23:00] simcop2387: ah
[17:23:00] simcop2387: sphing: i've been working on a mythdvdburn type thing, it uses svg themes to make the menus
[17:24:00] Lightnin: offloading to a dvd would need a "dvd flag" compared to an actual device id as you could insert a new dvd drive that has to be checked for the media. obviously the delay in the check would be acceptable as it was offloaded to other media
[17:24:00] simcop2387: Lightnin: it should also give you some "key" that you should put on the disc itself so that it can tell you which disk easily
[17:25:00] Lightnin: simcop2387, true
[17:25:00] Lightnin: backup to dvd, restore from dvd backup, play from dvd backup....
[17:25:00] Krazylegz: "Name backup DVD."
[17:25:00] Lightnin: dvd would need a data file also incase you lose what is on the drive, you could restore back to it too
[17:26:00] Lightnin: so where do such requests get inputted? :P
[17:26:00] sphing: simcop2387: could be a simple key.txt file on the drive
[17:26:00] sphing: *disc
[17:26:00] simcop2387: sphing i was thinking on the label of the disk (the top surface itself)
[17:26:00] sphing: ah
[17:26:00] simcop2387: something to physically write to differentiate between disks
[17:27:00] simcop2387: could be picked by the user or by the program
[17:27:00] Lightnin: just dump it into a data file along with any info of what is on the dvd
[17:27:00] Lightnin: user specifies what the ID is
[17:27:00] simcop2387: an automatic id generator would be nice too, then a whole semi automated setup could be made for disc labels to be printed out also
[17:28:00] ** simcop2387 is all about automation **
[17:28:00] Lightnin: true
[17:28:00] Lightnin: by dvd+rw's, you could add on to a current dvd (add to backup). creating a new backup would not allow the same id across dvd's
[17:28:00] Lightnin: add to a current, display a list of all current known backups to select from
[17:28:00] simcop2387: if i had a lego mind storms kit it'd be put to use managing a rack of dvd's that were automatically burned from mythtv, and it'd pick out the discs you want when you choose them in mythtv
[17:29:00] ** Lightnin has wheels turning as to the code if he gets his setup done after his house goes thru **
[17:30:00] simcop2387: be sweet to have a rack of 100+ dvd's that you can select shows from and the lego's pull out the correct dvd play the show and put it back when no longer needed
[17:30:00] sphing: lol @ simcop2387 yes its possible i guess

[17:31:00] Lightnin: need some place to put the recommendation up at so it isnt forgetten about, even if i dont get to it
[17:32:00] simcop2387: sphing: i've seen something similar before but never to that extent, i'd have it setup so that there are at least 4 racks and the whole system can be made so you put a cd/dvd in the drive, hit a button and boom it catalogs the dvd/cd and then puts it in a slot
[17:32:00] Krazylegz: Congratulations on the house.
[17:32:00] Lightnin: sphing, not sure. I believe mythtv and it's plugins are done in C

[17:33:00] simcop2387: sphing: i'm doing mine in perl! the mythdvdburn (at least the script to burn them and create the menus)
[17:34:00] sphing: we'd need the gui to enter the dvd disc name
[17:34:00] sphing: and to be to select which shows need to be archived

[22:30:00] BockBilbo: (ubuntu breezy)
[22:30:00] blammo_doh: are you using either apt or yum? (sorry, not familar with that distro)
[22:30:00] BockBilbo: blammo_doh, well, i could use apt and install the precompiled packages
[22:30:00] BockBilbo: but im compiling from the sources
[22:31:00] BockBilbo: because i get an error initializing the init.d script of myth
[22:31:00] blammo_doh: I've found that the best way to get all the dependancies sometimes when I'm trying out a new combo, is to install the precompileds, let apt/yum get all the dependancies, then "roll my own" so to speak.
[22:32:00] blammo_doh: I might be able to help with the init.d problem.. paste a note or two?

[23:48:00] BockBilbo: because if i try to start it again, i get this log: Starting MythTV server: mythbackend/usr/bin/mythbackend already running.

[23:54:00] lordliima: but with gentoo you can doo /etc/init.d/mythbackend zap

[23:57:00] BockBilbo: well, anyway, how do i set the channels?
[23:57:00] lordliima: there is zap in mythbackend init script which helps in that kind of cases
[23:57:00] BockBilbo: i just see a green screen in anyone
[23:57:00] BockBilbo: mmm interesting

[23:57:00] blammo_doh: sorry Bockbilbo : I meant that the init.d script runs as room, and then sudo's the commandline as specifiied by the $USER variable
[23:57:00] blammo_doh: sounds like that would work
