[00:48:00] smartel: Hello all. I am a new user of MythTv, so the answer to my question will probably be obvious for must of you, but how can I automatically transcode my recorded shows to Mpeg4 after they are recorded and comercials flaged? When I configure a recording, I can chose a profile, but only my cards profiles are listed; the transcoding ones aren't. I guess I am at the wrong place...

[00:54:00] SlicerDicer-: smartel, I would not trust the automatic flagging and transcoding
[00:54:00] SlicerDicer-: I would do it by hand
[00:54:00] SlicerDicer-: from what I have seen of commerical flagging is it is half ass at best. I am by no means saying its bad I just would not trust it as 100% auto its nice to skip the commericals I would just not trust it on full autopilot as you could have something go really wrong :) then you will be mad and bitching
[00:55:00] SlicerDicer-: actually I just learnt how to do it by hand today hehe
[00:55:00] SlicerDicer-: I figured out I had it set wrong hehe
[00:58:00] SlicerDicer-: but then again I am a gentoo user so I like to do things the hard way har har :P
[00:59:00] smartel: Ok, but I still want to automatically encode to mpeg4
[00:59:00] smartel: I guess I'll flag comercials afterward
[01:01:00] PatrickDK: did you try changing your commercial detection method?
[01:01:00] PatrickDK: I know, detect blank screen works good for scifi channel
[01:02:00] PatrickDK (i=patrickd@dyn-19-218.myactv.net) Quit (Read error: 131 (Connection reset by peer))
[01:04:00] SlicerDicer-: heh well that did not work for mine
[01:04:00] smartel: Or is there a way to see from the fronthend what recording is in what format? (Mpeg2, Mpeg4...) That would make the manual technique more usable.
[01:04:00] SlicerDicer-: smartel, I am talking manual by after the movie is done recording go in and transcode it and yank out the commericals
[01:04:00] SlicerDicer-: in mythfrontend itself
[01:05:00] SlicerDicer-: smartel, what card do you have?
[01:06:00] smartel: Forget the comercial thing for a second. I record in Mpeg2 with my Hauppauge PVR-150, and want to automaticaly transcode to another format to save hd space.
[01:06:00] SlicerDicer-: ohh well then thats fine
[01:06:00] SlicerDicer-: but I still have no idea how to do it as I said I just learned how to transcode today hehe
[01:06:00] SlicerDicer-: I have been running myth for nearly 5 months now
[01:07:00] SlicerDicer-: harddrive space was not a issue really for me :P I just add harddrives as I need them "costco has hell of good deals on 300+gb drives" :)
[01:12:00] smartel: If you use Myth since 5 months, maybe you'll be able to answer my next question: How can I organise my recorded shows? I want to put evrything I didn't watched yet in one place, and categorized them manually after I watched them. Is it possible ?

[02:38:00] Ryushin: Hello all.
[02:40:00] Ryushin: I have a few questions regarding the design of my first myth box. I'm still aquireing hardware. I got a nice Silverstone case, a PVR-350, pcHDTV, Sempron 2600+, 512MB RAM, etc.
[02:41:00] Ryushin: Will I be able to record HD with that config? Also, I've just found out that there are DVB cards. It seems that this is just for Europe. Are there any DVB cards that work in the US?
[02:42:00] SqWaw` (n=Garfster@ool-457a6573.dyn.optonline.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[02:46:00] KaiForce: Ryushin I don't know about the Sempron but I believe that should be fine for HD
[02:46:00] Ryushin: The sempron was just a stop gap until the dual core amd's came down in price a bit.
[02:48:00] Ryushin: I should get the sempron and motherboard end of this week. I really don't like over clocking anything, but I guess this chip is very, very easy to overclock safely to 2 ghz (some people have gotten 2.6 out of it) from it's 1.6 ghz. So, I'm probably going to do that.

[02:49:00] Ryushin: I've googled some more, and I answered my own question regarding DVB. It seems it's used outside of north america. Is there a DVB card for satellite that Myth can run?
[02:51:00] KaiForce: not sure, someone on here should be able to answer that
[02:52:00] KaiForce: what kind of disk storage are you getting?
[02:52:00] knewt (n=jmb@home.pimb.org) has joined #mythtv-users
[02:52:00] Ryushin: Write now it's just going to be a single 7200 rpm 120 GB drive. But early next year, I'll drop 6 300 GB 7200 rpm drives RAID 5.
[02:53:00] KaiForce: with HD you'll fill that in a hurry :)
[02:53:00] djperegrine: how much money is a 120 gig drive now a days?
[02:53:00] Ryushin: Yea, I sure will. Will I be able to transcode it into MPEG 4 after the fact.
[02:54:00] KaiForce: 120s, do they still sell those ?
[02:54:00] SqWaw (n=Garfster@69.122.101.115) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[02:54:00] Ryushin: $80 bucks. I had a old one sitting around, so I'm just going to use that for the time being.
[02:54:00] KaiForce: my original myth install was 20gb
[02:54:00] djperegrine: cool
[02:54:00] djperegrine: mine is 30
[02:54:00] djperegrine: its plenty
[02:54:00] djperegrine: 30 , 30 minutes shows is fine
[02:54:00] KaiForce: i didn't understand what myth did, the day after i fired it up i ordered a replacement
[02:54:00] Ryushin: So 1.5 TB is overkill?

[02:55:00] djperegrine: for me its like a gig for 30 minutes
[02:55:00] djperegrine: but you could transcode and make it really small
[02:55:00] KaiForce: i record at a higher bitrate, i get about 3gb/half hour
[02:55:00] djperegrine: well you don't need to
[02:55:00] w1ldman: I dont have /dev/lirc or /dev/lirc0 can somebody tell me how to creat those
[02:55:00] KaiForce: i have the space now
[02:55:00] djperegrine: my cable is pretty crappy now anyway
[02:56:00] djperegrine: w1ldman, load the driver?
[02:56:00] KaiForce: i have two directv receivers
[02:56:00] w1ldman: modprobe? yea i did that
[02:56:00] djperegrine: well?
[02:56:00] djperegrine: did it fail?
[02:56:00] Ryushin: I figure HD is going to consume about 15 GB an hour. I'm hoping transcoding will drop it down to 3–5 GB or so.
[02:56:00] w1ldman: let me do it again
[02:56:00] djperegrine: check dmesg afterwards
[02:58:00] w1ldman: could not open /dev/lirc0

[02:59:00] w1ldman: ok so in my lsmod i do see it
[02:59:00] djperegrine: I think thats the problem
[03:00:00] djperegrine: Ryushin , I dunno I want to know the same
[03:00:00] KaiForce: Ryushin: you can watch while transcode is in progress
[03:00:00] Ryushin: Myth is so cool!
[03:00:00] djperegrine: yea

[03:01:00] Ryushin: I can't wait to get my box built, and get debian and myth running. I have enough hardware it should take me a couple of weeks to get everything working.
[03:02:00] djperegrine: knoppmyth is dope it made my life alot easier
[03:02:00] Ryushin: Is there any advantage in going with 64 bit over 32 bit?
[03:02:00] djperegrine: um if you have a 64bit CPU you really should
[03:03:00] djperegrine: but if you are buying a CPU, I would go with 32bit its cheaper :P
[03:03:00] Ryushin: It's a 64 bit sempron.
[03:03:00] djperegrine: yea do it fo shure
[03:03:00] djperegrine: it would be a waste if you didn't
[03:03:00] KaiForce: is it tougher to get installed on 64
[03:03:00] djperegrine: yea
[03:04:00] djperegrine: you'll run into alot more problems
[03:04:00] KaiForce: i'd probably go that way too, even if it had a higher upfront pain
[03:04:00] djperegrine: yea
[03:04:00] djperegrine: you have to configure shit anyway
[03:04:00] KaiForce: but i'm on a tbird 1.2 so i'm not even considering it :)

[04:25:00] PatrickDK: hardware raid, software raid sucks
[04:25:00] SlicerDicer-: well if you have money coming out your ass fine then
[04:25:00] boywonder: never going to beat a nice standalone card
[04:25:00] smartel: SlicerDicer: HOw do you transcode from Mpeg2 to Mpeg4 ? I know I save a lot of space when I do a manual Transcode on a recorded show, but I see no way to see exactly what is happening; is it converted to mpeg4 or somethig else or ...
[04:25:00] PatrickDK: I am thinking about installing like 4 18g 15k scsi drives in raid10 for the live buffers
[04:25:00] SlicerDicer-: smartel, you can setup the options in mythtv
[04:26:00] boywonder: what tuners are you using?
[04:26:00] SlicerDicer-: pvr-350
[04:26:00] PatrickDK: anyone been playing with the ivtv 0.3.7 drivers? and a pvr350?
[04:27:00] PatrickDK: it seems the decoder is not working, atleast I can't get it to work
[04:27:00] PatrickDK: works ok in the ivtv 0.3.3 versions for me
[04:27:00] boywonder: I got a couple pvr150s, so Im not sure
[04:27:00] smartel: SlicerDicer are you talking about the options in "Recording profiles -> Transcoders"
[04:27:00] SlicerDicer-: yeah smartel

[04:28:00] SlicerDicer-: PatrickDK, i use 0.2.0
[04:28:00] SlicerDicer-: smartel, I think it will work out nicely
[04:28:00] PatrickDK: ya, I don't like the 0.2 much myself
[04:28:00] GreyFoxx: PatrickDK: I set one up the other night, using both 0.2.0 and 0.3.7. Both seemed to work fine
[04:28:00] PatrickDK: GreyFoxx, what kernel you using?
[04:29:00] SlicerDicer-: smartel, once I get it figured out for optimal settings I will post information in the gentoo mythtv wiki if you want to take a look in a few days it should be up
[04:29:00] GreyFoxx: used it for an hour and decided it wasn't really much better than the output of my video cad
[04:29:00] SlicerDicer-: GreyFoxx, I never have had a issue with the 0.2.0

[04:33:00] xris: The_Ball: can edit from mythtv-setup or mythweb
[04:33:00] SlicerDicer: till you see codec and change the codec to MPEG-4 and then adjust the bitrate as you desire I am messing with settings to see what the best bitrate/quality is with setting
[04:33:00] SlicerDicer: thats why its experimental
[04:33:00] PatrickDK: hmm, I still wish I could compile mythtv with directfb
[04:33:00] The_Ball: xris, ah yes, would the values be the same as tvtime uses?
[04:33:00] smartel: How do you know that RTjpeg is the one that will be use ?
[04:33:00] SlicerDicer: just do it with a movie you dont care about for testing or record some garbage like umm... discovery channel crap to test with hehe
[04:33:00] PatrickDK: wanted to try that out on the pvr350

[04:34:00] The_Ball: thanks :)
[04:34:00] xris: smartel: why would you want to use rtjpeg?
[04:34:00] smartel: xris: I dont
[04:34:00] SlicerDicer: smartel: but selecing mpeg4 codec should make it compress to mpeg4
[04:34:00] smartel: xris: I want to transcode from Mpeg2 to Mpeg4
[04:34:00] SlicerDicer: xris: can verify that I am sure but I cant
[04:35:00] xris: smartel: then you go into the "transcode" profile group
[04:35:00] xris: and set up whatever you want
[04:35:00] GreyFoxx: PatrickDK: I can't imagine that performing very well
[04:35:00] xris: I still think that the mpeg2 from the x50 cards is better than the mpeg4 via software
[04:36:00] SlicerDicer: smartel: I have it set to MPEG-4. bitrate 1500, enable highquality, enable 4mv, enable interlaced DCT and enable interlaced motion estimation thats what my next test will be :)
[04:36:00] GreyFoxx: the pvr350 is not a video card, there are no hardware accelerations (beyond mpeg decoding) to be used, so it would all be in software anyway
[04:36:00] GreyFoxx: I don't see what you would gain even if you got it to work
[04:36:00] xris: SlicerDicer-: I used to use that setting (at about 3x higher bitrate) for encoding.
[04:36:00] smartel: :xris: How do I know the Transcoder to configure ? There is: From RTjepg/MPEG4, From MPEG2, From High Quality, From Medium Quality, From Low quality)
[04:36:00] SlicerDicer: xris: is 1500 too low?
[04:36:00] PatrickDK: GreyFoxx, bypassing all of X11
[04:36:00] PatrickDK: and it's damned config issues
[04:37:00] PatrickDK: I want to run X11 on my video card, to support some java apps I have to use on it

[04:37:00] GreyFoxx: PatrickDK: X is not the huge burden/beast people like to make it out to be
[04:37:00] PatrickDK: and well, x won't let me use the video card and the pvr350 at the same time

[04:38:00] smartel: xris: That's what I guessed, but i'd like to know what From Low Quality mean...
[04:38:00] PatrickDK: greyfoxx, I tried that
[04:38:00] xris: I don't have a very high opinion of the video encoding quality of myth's software encoders... but that very well could be entirely related to my old software-based tuner card not being as nice as my pvr-150.

[04:46:00] xris: SlicerDicer-: 4000–9000, I think... maybe not quite that high. ends up about 2.4G/hour
[04:47:00] SlicerDicer-: ahh yeah thats about what I run
[04:47:00] SlicerDicer-: the video quality just rocks
[04:47:00] xris: yeah
[04:47:00] SlicerDicer-: I dont like low quality
[04:52:00] xris: agreed
[04:52:00] xris: that's why I archive with nuvexport instead of the built-in stuff.

[04:55:00] PatrickDK: I should test 0.3.4 though
[04:56:00] SlicerDicer: xris: just tested it for some reason my mplayer can fastforward nuv
[04:56:00] PatrickDK: any distro at all should be fine

[21:09:00] lane: Hi all. I just re-did my Myth box with FC4, and I've hit a snag with nuvexport. I recorded a couple shows with my PVR 250, and tried to do a DVD export using nuvexport. As I was answering the normal series of questions that nuvexport asks, it mentioned that my version of yuvdenoise was broken. It let me do the export, but the resulting mpg file had a bit of av sync issues. I was wondering if this is a known issue, or if xris or anyon
[21:10:00] JoeG: anybody care to give me a hand?
[21:10:00] Mrgoose: i dont think either of them are around
[21:11:00] xris: lane: yuvdenoise issue won't have anything to do with the out of sync.
[21:11:00] xris: and sync problems are a known issue in general. no idea how to work around them — usually it means something's not quite right with the source file.
[21:11:00] xris: you might try --transcode to see if that works any better.
[21:11:00] JoeG: mplayer /dev/viedo0 works great... but mythtv just gives me a black screen
[21:11:00] lane: xris: ok, thanks. It's strange, since I didn't have any such issues before I redid my box, when I was using fc2
[21:12:00] xris: lane: yup

[21:12:00] JoeG: so nobody wants to help me
[21:12:00] xris: good luck getting nuvexport working with the air2pc recordings, too.. I've had no luck so far.
[21:12:00] lane: hmmm
[21:12:00] xris: PatrickDK: hence my asking him to try --transcode
[21:12:00] PatrickDK: I found my sync problems was just the program that joined the streams
[21:13:00] xris: but yeah, you could try tcdemux and tcremux, or mpgtx or any of the other ones.
[21:13:00] PatrickDK: hmm, dunno I don't transcode my video :(
[21:13:00] JoeG: wow cool it's like i am a chost or something....

[21:17:00] PatrickDK: ya, but atleast you can still login to the system :)
[21:17:00] lane: yeah, I've done that and gotten off the relevant files I needed to back up
[21:18:00] lane: now I'm just debating whether to continue with FC4 or to revert back to FC2 and abandon hope of getting my air2pc card working
[21:18:00] JoeG: so if you guys don't know how answer this... where do i go from here?? can't get any answers from the mailing list either

[21:54:00] xris: Sneaker__: rerun mythtv-setup, like the error suggests
[21:54:00] Sneaker__: no help
[21:55:00] xris: oh?
[21:55:00] Sneaker__: hmm, maybe there is somekind of a problem with the database...
[21:55:00] xris: Sneaker__: thus, rerun mythtv-setup, and clear all channel/card settings.
[21:55:00] Sneaker__: I have done that ~6 times
[21:56:00] Sneaker__: But will do it for the 7th time
[21:56:00] xris: Sneaker__: what kind of card? and you've attached the channel stuff to the card?
[21:56:00] lane: xris: ok. good to know. my dilemma is that fc2 works great for recording and exporting (with no sync issues), but I can't get the air2pc working, while fc4 recognizes the air2pc just fine, but I get sync issues when exporting from the 250 to DVD with nuvexport.

[21:58:00] Sneaker__: Hmm
[22:00:00] Sneaker__: Well I scanned the channels with mythtvsetup by giving frequency for the first channelpacket
[22:00:00] xris: makes sense.
[22:00:00] xris: then you need to attach them to the xmltvid for each channel you get from xmltv
[22:00:00] Sneaker__: It should be enough to get all the necessary PIDs to the database, right?
[22:00:00] Sneaker__: hmm
[22:00:00] Sneaker__: I thought that was just for the EPG
[22:01:00] xris: should work without doing that, though.
[22:01:00] Sneaker__: yep
[22:01:00] xris: except that the EPG is what myth uses to tune channels
[22:01:00] Sneaker__: okay, maybe that is the problem
[22:01:00] xris: you still need to attach the card to an epg.
[22:01:00] Sneaker__: true
[22:01:00] Sneaker__: Okay, I will try again.
[22:01:00] Sneaker__: Thanks for the advice
