[00:00:00] juski: anax – depends which distro you want to run it on
[00:01:00] juski: on gentoo all I did was 'emerge' everything
[00:01:00] juski: FC3 users can use apt-get
[00:01:00] juski: knoppmyth users just put a CD in & answer some questions (kind of)
[00:01:00] anax: i am emerging it for about 25h on my via-epia-m9000 with gentoo, stage 1 with 2.4er kernel homebrewed with help of epiawiki.org sources.
[00:02:00] anax: myqlserver is already installed and configured
[00:02:00] juski: you're gonna have fun getting the unichrome driver rolling into everything
[00:02:00] juski: my frontend box is EPIA based (m10k)
[00:02:00] travolta: if you follow the instructions in the documentation, it is straight forward
[00:02:00] anax: juski: it is already modular in the kernel form epiawiki
[00:03:00] juski: anax: I was following the guide at www.linpvr.org
[00:03:00] juski: no it wasn't that one – oops
[00:03:00] Beirdo: hmmm
[00:03:00] anax: juski: did you build you own kernel?
[00:03:00] juski: yes I did
[00:04:00] anax: okay.
[00:04:00] juski: it was taking far too long though
[00:04:00] anax: i dont know if the drivers already work :)
[00:04:00] juski: so I figured that since the machine was only a frontend...
[00:04:00] anax: the box is always emerging :)
[00:04:00] juski: why not just use something ready-made :)
[00:04:00] Beirdo: blah
[00:04:00] Beirdo: OK, I think it's working now
[00:04:00] anax: juski: thats what i think now :)
[00:04:00] Beirdo: hehe
[00:05:00] juski: hey no need to re-invent the wheel
[00:05:00] juski: I got minimyth up & running in about an hour
[00:05:00] anax: really?
[00:05:00] juski: from configuring a TFTP boot server right up to watching recordings
[00:05:00] juski: really
[00:05:00] juski: you need a backend machine for minimyth though
[00:06:00] anax: juski: the funniest thing is, that i dont want to use it for watching tv
[00:06:00] juski: I've got a noisy server box upstairs and an M10k downstairs ;)
[00:06:00] anax: i just want the "ass-kicking" nice frontend !
[00:07:00] KillerBunny (Killer@port149.ds1-arno.adsl.cybercity.dk) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:07:00] juski: I can watch 'live tv' with it
[00:07:00] anax: i know. but i dont have any tv-card :)
[00:07:00] k-man: can anyone recommend a tool that makes it easier to edit records than phpmyadmin?
[00:07:00] Beirdo: k-man, you are kidding, right?
[00:08:00] k-man: not at all
[00:08:00] k-man: i mean...
[00:08:00] juski: k-man – there's always the command-line ;)
[00:08:00] Beirdo: pretty hard to get easier than a frigging web form
[00:08:00] k-man: phpmyadmin is good for editing one field here and there
[00:08:00] k-man: but if you want to change many records very quickly, its not so easy
[00:08:00] Beirdo: learn some SQL if you want to change lots at once
[00:08:00] k-man: yeah, thanks for the advice beirdo
[00:08:00] juski: and manke sure you back up the database before doing anything :)
[00:08:00] Beirdo: and you can use SQL commands from phpmyadmin just as easily as anywhere else
[00:09:00] Beirdo: you aren't likely to get a nicer interface
[00:09:00] juski: there's a (ahem) windows MYSQL frontend
[00:10:00] juski: but it's no easier to use than web form based admin tools
[00:10:00] Beirdo: like that would give a much better interface... it's DATA, after all
[00:10:00] juski: anax: what are you planning on using the frontend for?
[00:10:00] Beirdo: if you wanna do mass changes, you will need to learn some SQL, sorry

[00:15:00] k-man: but i get nothing in mythtv

[01:50:00] levon: hadees, that is a common problem in with audio equipment and different grounds
[01:50:00] levon: I guess you have cable tv, don't you? ;)
[01:50:00] levon: cable tv often has a different ground than the house itself.
[01:50:00] levon: if you hook up your computer, which is grounded too, you'll get the buzzing sound
[01:51:00] levon: (or hook up a grounded mixer, you'll get the same)
[01:51:00] levon: hadees, the solution would be to use some sort of optical cupling
[01:51:00] levon: you can build something for a few $$$
[01:51:00] levon: (or decupling, for that matter)

[01:53:00] levon: down_below, there really isn't much to configure. EIT will be fetched automatically if "Use on air guide" is active in the channel options.
[01:54:00] hadees: levon, how can i tell? this is a frontend box with no cable comming into it
[01:54:00] hadees: levon, could it be the TV coax
[01:54:00] levon: it's the combination of grounded power to your computer and the tv coax, yes.
[01:55:00] down_below: levon: thats the problem ... i dont have a switch in the channel editor
[01:55:00] levon: both have different grounds
[01:55:00] levon: down_below, strange, I do ;)
[01:55:00] hadees: levon, so removing the coax from the tv would in theory fix it?
[01:55:00] levon: hadees, yes.
[01:55:00] levon: down_below, right below playback filters.
[01:55:00] down_below: levon: there is nothing

[01:56:00] levon: down_below, strange. you sure you recompiled everything and reinstalled everything after enabling eit?
[01:56:00] down_below: perhaps i compile again tomorrow
[01:56:00] down_below: levon: i thin
[01:56:00] levon: down_below, remove the binaries first, make clean and recompile it.
[01:56:00] down_below: k
[01:56:00] levon: hadees, and?
[01:56:00] hadees: levon, you were correct
[01:57:00] hadees: now the question is how do i fix it
[01:57:00] levon: ;)
[01:57:00] down_below: i only have to do ./configure --options && qmake xxx && make && make install
[01:57:00] down_below: right?
[01:57:00] down_below: i installed to another location
[01:57:00] levon: hadees, well, for audio it's easy: optical (de)cuplers.
[01:57:00] levon: but for video... I'm not sure.
[01:57:00] hadees: levon, can't i just run a ground wire or something
[01:57:00] levon: well, if you had a sat dish, you would not have the problem either
[01:58:00] levon: hadees, it won't help anyway.
[01:58:00] levon: you just cannot ground a tv coax yourself
[01:58:00] levon: you would ground all the neighbours devices if you tried.
[01:58:00] levon: but still would have another voltage level
[01:59:00] splat1 is now known as splAt1
[02:00:00] levon: hadees, normally your cable provider should take care of correct grounding.
[02:00:00] levon: what you can do is measure the voltage difference between your ground and the coax ground
[02:00:00] levon: then call the provider and tell'em.
[02:00:00] ** levon opens up a b33r **
[02:00:00] levon: cheers every1
[02:01:00] hadees: levon, what about running it through a coax amp
[02:02:00] levon: hadees, good questions. A non grounded would not do any good. Maybe (if there is) a grounded one would help.
[02:02:00] levon: s/questions/question/
[02:04:00] levon: hadees, I have quite a similar problem.
[02:04:00] levon: Since I have optical sound, i don't hear and buzz but
[02:05:00] levon: I can "see" the buzz as little flicker in the background of a still picture
[02:05:00] levon: if I remove the coax, all is good
[02:05:00] levon: that problem is very common for cable tv.

[08:02:00] ** xris pokes Beirdo **
[08:03:00] mchou: yo xris
[08:03:00] mchou: maybe you can help me out :)
[08:03:00] xris: probably not. heh. what's up?  ;)
[08:03:00] mchou: is there a way to pass ./configure options to rpmbuild w/o modifying the spec file?
[08:04:00] mchou: on a source rpm of course......
[08:06:00] xris: depends on the spec
[08:07:00] mchou: how does the spec "pass thru" ./configure options?
[08:07:00] xris: by anticipating people wanting to do it and allowing for something like --define
[08:07:00] xris: very few do, though.
[08:07:00] xris: easier to just `rpm -i` the src.rpm, edit the spec and rpmbuild the spec
[08:07:00] mchou: haha
[08:08:00] mchou: that's just too lame....
[08:11:00] xris: not my fault spec builders are lame
[08:11:00] xris: I try to put all available options into my specs.
[08:12:00] mchou: hehe
[08:12:00] mchou: not blaming ya.
[08:12:00] mchou: just dumbass rpm.
[08:13:00] xris: not a problem with rpm, either.
[08:13:00] mchou: huh?
[08:13:00] xris: spec is basically a shell script
[08:14:00] mchou: rpm should have been written to allow pass-thru :)
[08:14:00] xris: whoever writes it can put whatever options in they want. can use the %{_configure} macro, or just do ./configure
[08:14:00] mchou: nah, that's too much a pita.
[08:14:00] xris: I like it for some stuff.
[08:15:00] xris: *if* they use the macro, then you can --define "optflags=--enable-whatever"
[08:15:00] mchou: default should be "pass-thru", and allow for %{configure} in spec...
[08:15:00] xris: or something like that
[08:16:00] xris: why? what if the program doesn't use ./configure — then where do the options go?
[08:16:00] mchou: nowhere. user error
[08:16:00] mchou: passed back up to rpm.
[08:17:00] xris: %configure:
[08:17:00] xris: CFLAGS="${CFLAGS:-%optflags}" ; export CFLAGS ;
[08:17:00] xris: CXXFLAGS="${CXXFLAGS:-%optflags}" ; export CXXFLAGS ;
[08:17:00] xris: FFLAGS="${FFLAGS:-%optflags}" ; export FFLAGS ;
[08:17:00] xris: for i in $(find . -name config.guess -o -name config.sub) ; do
[08:17:00] xris: [ -f /usr/lib/rpm/redhat/$(basename $i) ] && /bin/rm -f $i && /bin/cp -fv /usr/lib/rpm/redhat/$(basename $i) $i ;
[08:17:00] xris: done ;
[08:17:00] xris: woah, that's longer than I thought
[08:17:00] mchou: hehe
[08:17:00] xris: that's the %configure macro
[08:18:00] xris: anyway, doesn't make sense to me to pass random cli stuff in to ./configure — don't even know if the cli-parser can tell the difference between stuff meant for rpmbuild and stuff meant for ./configure.
[08:19:00] mchou: bah.
[08:19:00] mchou: ust want things easy to compile w/o touching a gazillion bits/files.
[08:19:00] mchou: just*
[08:20:00] moonie (~moonie@moonie.channel-support.mandriva) has joined #MythTV-Users
[08:20:00] mchou: which is what you end up doing by modifying spec....
[08:22:00] mchou: or make configure macro mandatory in spec for things that use configure.....
[08:23:00] xris: huh? configure macro guarantees that configure gets run with the options that the distro dictates/prefers for its packages (arch, etc).. much better than just manually running ./configure./
[08:23:00] xris: you *can* pass options to the macro just fine.
[08:23:00] xris: look at this one: http://forevermore.net/files/mythtv_misc/mythtv.spec
[08:23:00] xris: that's the best way to do it (imho)
[08:24:00] mchou: no, that's not what I meant.
[08:24:00] xris: have --with and --without options for every configure option.
[08:24:00] mchou: hell no.
[08:25:00] mchou: that's one more darn thing to keep "current"
[08:26:00] mchou: default should be "pass-thru" mode (either via rpmbuild or in spec). imho.
[08:26:00] xris: thus, --define
[08:26:00] xris: and it gets passed through
[08:26:00] mchou: modifying spec (or keeping spec in lock step with ./configure options) is just a recipe for disaster.
[08:26:00] xris: but the spec is *supposed* to be kept current.
[08:27:00] mchou: lol
[08:27:00] mchou: never works that way though :)
[08:27:00] xris: the point of the spec is to CONTROL the options. if you want to deviate from the spec, then do it the old fashioned way.
[08:27:00] xris: I keep mine up to date.
[08:28:00] mchou: yeah, but no (commercial) packager can possibly keep current :)
[08:29:00] xris: why not? ubuntu and fedora seem to do well enough
[08:29:00] mchou: I mean I dont know how many packages there are in fc, but it's a BIG number :)
[08:30:00] mchou: gah!!!
[08:30:00] mchou: crap!
[08:30:00] xris: yeah. would be even better if there was only ONE packaging format (spec vs deb's mess o' files vs whatever gentoo uses vs ...), and then the upstream coders could handle it.
[08:30:00] mchou: I didnt mean to do a rebuild -bb!
[08:30:00] mchou: crap! now I lost my modded spec.
[08:30:00] mchou: wtf.
[08:31:00] xris: huh?
[08:31:00] xris: how would that do it?
[08:31:00] xris: -bb is on the spec itself
[08:31:00] mchou: the spec gets removed on sucessful compile
[08:32:00] xris: for `rpmbuild -bb file.spec` ? no it doesn't
[08:32:00] xris: bb means "build binary"
[08:32:00] mchou: oops, take that back. It's still there.
[08:32:00] xris: ba is "build all"
[08:32:00] xris: bs is "build source"
[08:32:00] xris: bp is "build prep"
[08:32:00] mchou: but that's pretty screwed up.

[20:45:00] sparky_elite: i had it working before I reinstall knoppmyth to the latest version
[20:45:00] sparky_elite: so i'm assuming its a ?driver? setting
[20:45:00] xris: my suggestion would be to rerun mythtvsetup and wipe all card/channel info, then set it up again.
[20:45:00] sparky_elite: ok
[20:45:00] xris: not that *that* would affect ptune
[20:45:00] sparky_elite: leave channel settings?
[20:45:00] xris: wipe everything
[20:45:00] jams: xris / sparky_elite wrong tuner type maybe?
[20:46:00] xris: as if it was a clean install
[20:46:00] xris: jams: good point.
[20:46:00] sparky_elite: i looked in the modules file for ivtv and tried changing the tuner type
[20:46:00] sparky_elite: but it complained to me...
[20:46:00] sparky_elite: i could try it a bit more, it was commented out
[20:47:00] Ashlar: Okay, I am such a dumbass.. I used telnet to see what was what.. because I hadn't set the servername, the redirect to /foo/ failed
[20:48:00] jams: apache should have guessed the servername
[20:49:00] jams: unless your host networking is also setup in a strange fashion
[20:49:00] Ashlar: no, I forgot to change the servername in httpd.conf from 'ensim.ev1server.com' to my actual domain.. so the redirect was to http://ensim.ev1servers.com/foo/
[20:50:00] jams: oh so you had a bogus servername
[20:50:00] Ashlar: right
[20:50:00] jams: that's a different story

[20:57:00] sparky_elite: i modprobed tveeprom and got nothing in dmesg

[21:20:00] sparky_elite: commented
[21:20:00] sparky_elite: it figured it out by itself
[21:20:00] Ashlar: well that's good, at least
[21:21:00] Ashlar: so the next thing I'd try would be ptune-ui.pl and try the different freq tables..

[21:31:00] Ashlar: oh wait
[21:31:00] Ashlar: when you ran setup, there was an option for also compiling the X tools

[21:33:00] Ashlar: well, if you've still got the directory where you compiled it, go look in lirc-<version>/tools

[21:36:00] shfifty: where would x libs normally be found?
[21:37:00] shfifty: using fc3

[21:43:00] Ashlar: not sure what package has the xlibs it's looking for though
[21:43:00] shfifty: any guesses? ill settle for guesses at this point...
[21:43:00] Ashlar: and randomly installing anything X related will cause a world of hurt (I know from experience)
[21:44:00] shfifty: what about recompiling myth with lirc support? how painful would that be?
[21:44:00] Ashlar: xlibs conflicts with foo dev, broken dependencies, yadda yadda yadda
[21:44:00] Ashlar: not hard at all, really, just a bit time consuming
[21:44:00] Ashlar: if you did it once, and left everything as is, should be pretty simple
[21:45:00] shfifty: any links to a good how-to?
[21:45:00] shfifty: i used yum install mythtv-suite the first time

[21:46:00] shfifty: thatd be great – is there a way to check?
[21:46:00] Ashlar: well, when mythfrontend starts up, it complains about a missing .lircrc file, IIRC
[21:48:00] shfifty: no missing .lircrc complaint, but i do get a lirc_init failed after a "could not connect to socket" and "conection refused"
[21:48:00] shfifty: so i assume it was compiled wih lirc support?
