[00:00:00] tuxick: imo a dell is worth considering anyway
[00:01:00] tuxick: you can't really build a standard box for that
[00:01:00] tuxick: unless you have special demands
[00:01:00] mchou: yeah, no doubt.
[00:01:00] mchou: but I'm not buying intel for my parents :)
[00:02:00] mchou: at least not at this stage.
[00:03:00] tuxick: aah good point
[00:03:00] tuxick: amd is a moneysaver indeed

[00:33:00] stoffel_: stop watching p0rn
[00:33:00] stoffel_: seriously i don't know
[00:33:00] QBob: heh — does women's tennis count :)
[00:34:00] QBob: it goes away if I bring up the OCD or do anything similary
[00:35:00] QBob: Also it can't open the ALSA channel when it's on mpeg2 out mode — it's trying to open with a bitrate of 0. Any ideas?

[03:58:00] EL_Whistey: I just discovered that if you don't enable dma on your dvd, it stutters or catches on playback.
[03:58:00] EL_Whistey: Then I fixed it.
[03:58:00] EL_Whistey: Yay.
[04:02:00] GreyFoxx: Being able to read it fast enough definately helps :)
[04:03:00] EL_Whistey: No problem there. P4 3GHz 1GHz ram and SATA for swap
[04:03:00] EL_Whistey: the catch/stutter is apparently diagnostic of no dma. So I glean from google.
[04:04:00] EL_Whistey: A friend was getting it on XP, too, so I will suggest he ensure dma is enabled.
[04:04:00] EL_Whistey: I thought it was a buffering or a priority problem, initially, was going to renice xine.
[04:04:00] GreyFoxx: I wasn't talking a bout processor speed, but being unable to read from the DVDROM or evne the HD with dma can cause that
[04:05:00] GreyFoxx: using old bios calls is sloooowwww
[04:05:00] EL_Whistey: One would imagine that a large enough buffer would be able to get around that, btw.
[04:06:00] GreyFoxx: It'd have to be a large buffer and you would incurr the delay of building it up first
[04:06:00] EL_Whistey: there's a unix program somewhere that constructs arbitrarily large buffers in a pipe-like form. I used it one time when I had to back a whole system onto DLT.
[04:06:00] EL_Whistey: the machine wasn't fast enough to reliably feed the streaming DLT.
[04:06:00] EL_Whistey: anyway, happily it's not necessary :)
[04:07:00] EL_Whistey: I just thought I'd mention the resolution here, for the record.
[04:08:00] EL_Whistey: I am thinking of writing a program which will structure menus in 2d, like a tiling of menu entries. Up-Down-Left-Right-Select-back kind of navigation

[07:08:00] xris: as for why you (might) need nuvexport — dvd is a pretty specific set of resolutions, bitrates, etc... ivtv also has weirdness about how it encodes streams that makes them fall out of sync on most dvd players (if you encode at the proper resolution and remux them for dvd use)

[13:53:00] enyc: you should have /dev/dvb/adapter0/ etc

[13:53:00] fweeee: Plus only root can see it – not a normal user.

[13:55:00] fweeee: No such file/directory

[15:08:00] aleitner: i tried to have no mysql password, set one, set a $HOME/.my.cnf file... nothing seems to help
[15:09:00] aleitner: what password does mythtv-database use when it tries to authenticate against mysql?
[15:09:00] sphing: aleitner: can you connect to mysql from the machine hosting the mysql server
[15:10:00] fatmatt: it should prompt you for the password I think
[15:10:00] directhex: aleitner, i found a *REALLY* weird solution to that one.
[15:10:00] aleitner: i am no mysql expert but when i type 'mysql -u root'

[15:10:00] aleitner: directhex: that sounds interesting?
[15:10:00] directhex: aleitner, edit /etc/hosts.conf, remove the reference to localhost.localdomain
[15:11:00] sphing: aleitner: when you can't connect, is it from the same machine?
[15:11:00] directhex: aleitner, for whatever reason, mysql ignores any entries beyond the first in hosts.conf. or it did for me.
[15:11:00] directhex: gah, i mean /etc/hosts
[15:11:00] directhex: ignore the .conf
[15:12:00] aleitner: directhex: ahh, thanks i was wondering (;

[21:33:00] BMOC: ok, i set it to dvd
[21:33:00] BMOC: should i start over
[21:33:00] BMOC: ?
[21:33:00] BMOC: i'm at 3%;)
[21:33:00] xris: multipass is slower, produces slightly better quality, and guarantees that the bitrate you choose will average out correctly throughout the whole file.
[21:34:00] xris: if you want an xvid file, leave it going...
[21:34:00] directhex (~jms@shields.gotadsl.co.uk) Quit ("Leaving")
[21:34:00] xris: if you want dvd, stop it and start over with mode=dvd (and probably ffmpeg instead of transcode)
[21:34:00] BMOC: i don't know if i want that, i just want a dvd of the show i recorded
[21:34:00] BMOC: well, ffmpeg was not working:(
[21:34:00] BMOC: or will ffmpeg use mythtranscode?
[21:34:00] BMOC: option?
[21:34:00] xris: ffmpeg always uses mythtranscode
[21:35:00] xris: if you want a dvd, then xvid won't work.
[21:35:00] BMOC: k

[21:35:00] BMOC: hey, it seems to be working with ffmpeg now!:)
[21:35:00] BMOC: oh wait, i didn't turn on multipass
[21:35:00] BMOC: but that has no effect without xvid, does it?
[21:35:00] xris: your ffmpeg problem was related to a missing xvid file, no?
[21:36:00] BMOC: and others, but apparently it works now
[21:36:00] xris: ffmpeg does multipass. don't know how well it works, though.
[21:36:00] BMOC: should i turn it on or not?
[21:36:00] braniff: anyone know about a MythTV-type project to build your own iPod ??
[21:36:00] BMOC: multipass, i mean
[21:36:00] xris: do you want it on?
[21:36:00] BMOC: you tell me, are the benefits worthwhile?
[21:37:00] xris: it's your choice... takes about twice as long to encode, but the target filesize is usually correct, and quality is slightly better.
[21:37:00] BMOC: without it on, should it be about as good as what i recorded?
[21:37:00] BMOC: i was recording at 2200kb/s
[21:37:00] xris: BMOC: fairly, yes.
[21:41:00] BMOC: thx
[21:42:00] xris: braniff: no.. didn't think the ipod had enough cpu to handle ogg playback, let alone video
[21:42:00] BMOC: ogg requires more cpu than mp3?
[21:42:00] xris: BMOC: yes.
[21:42:00] BMOC: k
[21:42:00] BMOC: so xris, you live in europe?
[21:43:00] xris: just like how bz2 requires more than zip... higher quality compression.
[21:43:00] xris: BMOC: no, how'd you figure that?
[21:43:00] BMOC: maybe you're defense of socialism a while back:)
[21:43:00] BMOC: or wait, you live in WA?
[21:43:00] xris: yeah. seattle
[21:43:00] BMOC: oh that makes sense:)
[21:43:00] BMOC: i was just wondering about the patent thing
[21:43:00] BMOC: if that means no more dvd players
[21:44:00] BMOC: for linux
[21:44:00] xris: what patent thing?
[21:44:00] BMOC: the EU patent thing
[21:44:00] xris: still confused...
[21:45:00] xris: software patents have nothing to do with css
[21:45:00] BMOC: well, i thought you lived in europe, that's why i was asking
[21:45:00] BMOC: one of the dvd player sites had a big thing about it
[21:45:00] xris: ah, yeah. they do. that's for the mpeg encoder/decoder stuff, I think.
