[00:15:00] Flimzy: To watch TV on the master backend server, the same with the tuner... am I correct to assume that two soundcards are needed, one to record the input, and one to play the output (since the output is buffered to allow FF/RW/pause, etc?)
[00:16:00] SarahEmm: depends on what card you're using
[00:16:00] SarahEmm: some video input cards have built in audio capture, so they don't require a seperate sound card
[00:18:00] SarahEmm: what card are you using?

[00:43:00] ledhed: anyone tried using a windows fileserver for Myth Storage?
[00:45:00] ledhed: anyone here paying attention?
[00:45:00] twitchmax: doesn't look like it
[00:45:00] twitchmax: what is myth storage?
[00:45:00] ledhed: ;)
[00:45:00] ledhed: I mean disk space where you store recordings & video etc
[00:46:00] twitchmax: yeah
[00:46:00] twitchmax: whats your problem?
[00:46:00] ledhed: use smb mount you use a windoes file server for storage?
[00:46:00] ledhed: blah
[00:46:00] ledhed: cant type.
[00:46:00] twitchmax: ok, first make sure you have samba-client installed
[00:46:00] twitchmax: then
[00:47:00] twitchmax: as root, "mount -t smbfs -o username=whatever //ip.of.evil.fileserver/path /path/to/mount/on
[00:48:00] twitchmax: it will prompt you for the password
[00:48:00] ledhed: I know it can be done, but is there a performance hit by using a network share as storage?
[00:48:00] twitchmax: if you are unsure of the share name you can use "smbclient -L ip.of.ser.ver
[00:49:00] twitchmax: ever tried a seperate backend system?
[00:49:00] ledhed: no
[00:51:00] ledhed: right now my Backend has 800mb of storage, I use it as Myth storage and a file server for my home network. But I want to setup a domain and use group policies. So I'm gonna migrate my RAID to a Windows 2003 box and setup my backend to access the storage via a windows share
[00:51:00] twitchmax: windows is evil....
[00:52:00] ledhed: samba doesnt do group policies
[00:52:00] ledhed: otherwise I'd stay Linux
[00:52:00] twitchmax: right on
[00:53:00] ledhed: so is there a significant performance hit by using a network share for storage?
[00:54:00] twitchmax: hey check this out, it might help... http://www-personal.monash.edu.au/~johnm/weblog/software/
[00:54:00] ledhed: I have 4 frontends and 4 PVR-250's in the backend. If all are doing LiveTV will a 100mBit network be fast enough if the storage is on a network share?
[00:54:00] twitchmax: should be
[00:55:00] twitchmax: maybe you could help me get my second fe setup and talking to my be downstairs
[00:55:00] ledhed: what Distro?
[00:55:00] hadees (~hadees@ip70-179-104-111.dc.dc.cox.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:56:00] twitchmax: the be is knoppmyth r5v12? and the new fe is gentoo and myth.18
[00:56:00] SarahEmm: be? fe?
[00:57:00] SarahEmm: oh, n/m.
[00:57:00] ledhed: I only know Fedora. but I can help you with general Myth setup
[00:57:00] twitchmax: my problem is the new fe won't talk to mysql
[00:58:00] twitchmax: i get a can't connect error
[00:58:00] twitchmax: but the ports are open
[00:58:00] ledhed: is the backend a back/front?
[00:58:00] twitchmax: yes
[00:58:00] ledhed: ok, there are a few thinkg it could be.
[00:58:00] twitchmax: i made the changes in the db as per the myth docs
[00:59:00] SarahEmm: twitchmax: have you tried conneting with the mysql client?
[00:59:00] ledhed: in the backend setup is the ip 127.0.0.1 or the actual IP
[01:00:00] twitchmax: the actual ip
[01:00:00] pookSter (~pookSter@d57-182-197.home.cgocable.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[01:01:00] ledhed: also the mysql.txt needs to be set for the backend ip not loopback
[01:01:00] twitchmax: in /etc/mysql , correct?
[01:01:00] ledhed: no
[01:01:00] ledhed: humm, not sure where it is on Gentoo
[01:01:00] ledhed: locate mysql.txt
[01:01:00] twitchmax: sorry, meant /etc/mythtv/
[01:01:00] twitchmax: not mysql
[01:01:00] SarahEmm: twitchmax: try running: mysql -u <username> -h <hostname of backend> -p mythconverg
[01:02:00] ledhed: again I'm not sure.
[01:02:00] SarahEmm: the newer versions should prompt you when it first comes up if it can't connect
[01:02:00] SarahEmm: it brings up a graphical thing that'll write out mysql.txt
[01:02:00] twitchmax: can't connect
[01:03:00] twitchmax: brb .. door
[01:03:00] ledhed: SarahEmm is right, from 0.17 onward its graphical
[01:03:00] Flimzy: What are the chances that a P233 with 96mb RAM would be able to function as a MythTV frontend?
[01:03:00] SarahEmm: Flimzy: small, i'd say? ;)
[01:04:00] SarahEmm: twitchmax: what error from mysql?
[01:04:00] ledhed: Flimzy, it may, but you would need a hardware mpeg2 decoder
[01:04:00] Flimzy: Well a hardware mpeg2 decoder won't be an option... as it's my laptop I'm thinking of
[01:04:00] Flimzy: heh
[01:04:00] Flimzy: oh well, no biggie :)
[01:05:00] ledhed: twitchmax, check /root/.mythtv/mysql.txt
[01:05:00] SarahEmm: if you can't even connect through mysql, it's not a config error on the client :)
[01:06:00] Flimzy: Does the master backend _have_ to have a capture device defined?
[01:06:00] Flimzy: If so, is there a way to create a 'dummy'?
[01:07:00] ledhed: Flimzy, the Master doesnt but there has to be a capture device somewhere. unless you just plan to use it as a jukebox
[01:07:00] Flimzy: ledhed: I actually will use it mostly as a jukebox... for the moment, until I get some new hardware
[01:07:00] Flimzy: But even so, there is a capture card in another machine...
[01:08:00] Flimzy: I'm using the slower machine as the "master" simply b/c the faster machine is dual-boot, and won't always be running Linux
[01:08:00] ledhed: that should be fine.
[01:08:00] Flimzy: and the tuner is in the dual-boot machine
[01:08:00] ledhed: twitchmax, did you do this?
[01:08:00] ledhed: $ mysql -u root -p mythconverg
[01:08:00] ledhed: mysql> grant all on mythconverg.* to mythtv@"10.0.1.%" identified by "mythtv";
[01:08:00] ledhed: mysql> flush privileges;
[01:08:00] ledhed: mysql> quit
[01:09:00] ledhed: 10.0.1.% should be what ever your network ip range is
[01:10:00] Flimzy: If the tuner is in a machine other than the frontend watching live TV, does the live TV buffer directory need to be accessable via NFS by both machines?
[01:10:00] SarahEmm: nope
[01:10:00] SarahEmm: all inter-end communications is done through the mythtv protocol
[01:10:00] SarahEmm: no shared filesystems required
[01:10:00] Flimzy: okay
[01:10:00] SarahEmm: it's Nifty :)
[01:10:00] twitchmax: excledhead: yeah, except i used a * instead of an ip
[01:11:00] ledhed: what is the mysql error you are getting?
[01:12:00] twitchmax: 111
[01:13:00] ledhed: dunno
[01:13:00] ledhed: obviously you can ping the backend etc correct
[01:13:00] twitchmax: of course
[01:13:00] SarahEmm: err... error 111?
[01:13:00] SarahEmm: no text?
[01:14:00] twitchmax: sluggish root # mythfrontend

[01:14:00] ledhed: I had that error once
[01:14:00] Flimzy: I think I fubared my mythtv
[01:14:00] ledhed: cant remember how I fixed it
[01:14:00] twitchmax: probably with a hammer
[01:15:00] SarahEmm: what if you try to connect through mythtv itself, twitchmax?
[01:15:00] SarahEmm: err
[01:15:00] ledhed: I threw mine off a 3rd story balcony
[01:15:00] SarahEmm: through mysql itself
[01:15:00] twitchmax: pretend i know next to nothing about mysql
[01:15:00] ledhed: lotta pieces
[01:15:00] twitchmax: how do you mean?
[01:16:00] SarahEmm: i pasted the line above twitchmax
[01:16:00] SarahEmm: twitchmax: try running: mysql -u <username> -h <hostname of backend> -p mythconverg
[01:16:00] ledhed: mysql -u <username> -h <hostname of backend> -p mythconverg
[01:16:00] twitchmax: i sluggish root # mysql -u mythtv -h 192.168.42.9 -p mythconverg
[01:16:00] twitchmax: Enter password:
[01:16:00] twitchmax: ERROR 2003: Can't connect to MySQL server on '192.168.42.9' (111)
[01:16:00] ledhed: from command line
[01:16:00] SarahEmm: okay
[01:16:00] SarahEmm: is mysql listening on the tcp port on the server?
[01:16:00] SarahEmm: on some distros that's disabled by default in the config
[01:17:00] twitchmax: where is the config?
[01:17:00] ledhed: I think I fixed mine by installing some missing components of Mysql
[01:18:00] twitchmax: such as?
[01:18:00] ledhed: its saying its a driver error
[01:18:00] SarahEmm: i'm not sure twitchmax.. what distro?
[01:18:00] twitchmax: knoppmyth r5a12
[01:18:00] ledhed: man I wish I could remember!
[01:18:00] ledhed: driving me nutz now
[01:18:00] SarahEmm: err
[01:18:00] SarahEmm: knoppmyth on the backend?
[01:18:00] twitchmax: ok, mysql isn't listening according to nmap
[01:19:00] SarahEmm: okay
[01:19:00] SarahEmm: that's the issue then
[01:19:00] SarahEmm: it's somewhere in /etc, no idea where tho
[01:19:00] SarahEmm: <-- gentoo/debian grrl
[01:19:00] twitchmax: on the be/fe system... am adding a second fe
[01:19:00] twitchmax: the new fe is gentoo
[01:19:00] ledhed: but you need to make the change to the backend MySQL server config
[01:21:00] SarahEmm: err
[01:21:00] SarahEmm: does the first fe work?
[01:21:00] SarahEmm: if so, the server is fine
[01:21:00] ledhed: the fe is on the backend
[01:21:00] SarahEmm: ahh.
[01:21:00] SarahEmm: alright...
[01:21:00] SarahEmm: the backend mysql needs to be listening on the tcp port then
[01:22:00] SarahEmm: i know nothing about knoppmyth for backends tho =-/
[01:22:00] twitchmax: ok, found it
[01:22:00] twitchmax: restarted mysql, and it talks
[01:22:00] ledhed: lol
[01:22:00] twitchmax: 8-)
[01:22:00] ledhed: always a simple thing like a restart
[01:23:00] SarahEmm: yay :)
[01:23:00] SarahEmm: niftycool
[01:23:00] twitchmax: unfortunatly it seems that the fe in portage doesn't understand network protocol 14, only 13
[01:24:00] ledhed: ??
[01:24:00] SarahEmm: you have to match the versions
[01:24:00] SarahEmm: running one version on the backend and another on any frontend won't work
[01:24:00] Flimzy (~jonhall@000-080-595.area2.spcsdns.net) Quit (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))
[01:24:00] SarahEmm: (annoyingly)
[01:24:00] SarahEmm: in gentoo they're 2 or 3 versions behind unless you unmask them
[01:24:00] SarahEmm: past 0.16 is masked
[01:24:00] SarahEmm: current is 0.18-r1
[01:24:00] SarahEmm: (if you unmask it)
[01:24:00] twitchmax: i didn't realize the portage version wasn't .18
[01:25:00] SarahEmm: there's two versions of .18 also
[01:25:00] SarahEmm: so you need to be careful :)
[01:29:00] twitchmax: sarah: using portage, how would i install .17 as it is the version on my working sys, so i'd prefer to change the one that doesn't work
[01:29:00] ledhed: anyone tried Fedora Core 4 yet?
[01:30:00] SarahEmm: i'm not the best person to ask right now twitchmax
[01:30:00] SarahEmm: ask some gentoo people, not really mythtv specific there :)
[01:30:00] twitchmax: right on
[01:30:00] ** SarahEmm is multitasking between watching tv and being here heh :) **
[01:31:00] twitchmax: i plan to be doing that soon ;)
[01:31:00] ledhed: Pause
[01:31:00] SarahEmm: ledhed: that is an option, yes :)
[01:32:00] ledhed: kinda the point of myth
[01:33:00] SarahEmm: *nods* this is true :)
[01:33:00] ** SarahEmm can help out people a little here and there, but is also relaxing at home.. so rather not pause :) **
[01:33:00] ledhed: ;)
[01:34:00] SarahEmm: mythtv rocks.
[01:34:00] SarahEmm: just got my new frontend running on an xbox up today :)
[01:34:00] SarahEmm: working nicely.
[01:34:00] ledhed: thats the general consensus
[01:34:00] ledhed: kewl
[01:35:00] SarahEmm: some video tuning still left to do, it's way overcompensating for overscan, i have a big black border right now.. other than that, 'tis handy :)
[01:35:00] ledhed: I tossed the XBox Idea around for a while. But decided to go with HTPC Cases instead
[01:35:00] SarahEmm: xbox blends in with living room a bit better than most PC cases would :)
[01:35:00] SarahEmm: (she says, with a MicroVAX II sitting to the left of the TV......
[01:36:00] ledhed: What? thats a monster.
[01:36:00] twitchmax: a real microvax?
[01:36:00] twitchmax: i saw one of those once
[01:37:00] SarahEmm: ledhed: that it is. :)
[01:37:00] SarahEmm: my living room doubles as a geek area and lab area.. heh.
[01:37:00] ledhed: would make a nice tech geek coffee table
[01:37:00] twitchmax: word.. my whole house does
[01:37:00] SarahEmm: so i'm not really sure why i care about the frontend blending in with the tv, but.. :)
[01:37:00] SarahEmm: twitchmax: heh. here too, sorta.
[01:38:00] SarahEmm: living room has a 19" rack in the corner with the cisco lab in it :)
[01:38:00] twitchmax: sounds like my downstairs
[01:38:00] ledhed: Mine are silverstone cases. Paid way too much. but what the hell its only money
[01:38:00] ledhed: SarahEmm, thats hot
[01:39:00] twitchmax: my rack isn't that cool tho, because it's only got sparcs in it
[01:39:00] ledhed: thinking of putting a 19" rack in my office closet
[01:39:00] twitchmax: well and a catalyst 5000
[01:39:00] SarahEmm: twitchmax: ahh.. mine's pretty much just network gear, working on some cisco certs :)
[01:40:00] twitchmax: right on
[01:40:00] SarahEmm: <-- network monkey for a living
[01:41:00] twitchmax: yeah me too, sort of
[01:41:00] twitchmax: i administer some systems in the dominican rep.
[01:41:00] SarahEmm: ahh
[01:41:00] oneo: ledhed – what case did you decide on?
[01:41:00] ** SarahEmm babysits a few thousand boxes here in canadia **
[01:42:00] oneo: is there such a thing as a good but affordable htpc case with IR tuner and optional vfd?
[01:42:00] mchou: thousand boxes?? wow.

[01:43:00] SarahEmm: we have good network monitoringness :)
[01:43:00] oneo: how much you pay?
[01:43:00] ledhed: $200 + or -
[01:43:00] ledhed: was almost a year ago
[01:43:00] mchou: SarahEmm: is this a compute cluster or ?
[01:44:00] oneo: ledhed – what model?
[01:44:00] mchou: cause 1K boxes with different configs is probably a PITA.
[01:44:00] SarahEmm: mchou: we host/manage gear for customers
[01:44:00] SarahEmm: so yes, every box is configged somewhat differently
[01:44:00] SarahEmm: it's... Fun. ;)
[01:44:00] iggy: ouch
[01:44:00] Lanz: Hey guys how can I get myth tv to work on Debian sarge? I installed it and its dependencies and it gives me some backend errors and I can't watch tv for some reason.
[01:44:00] mchou: SarahEmm: bah, not my idea of fun :)
[01:44:00] Lanz: Please help.
[01:45:00] SarahEmm: what errors, lanz?
[01:45:00] SarahEmm: mchou: *shrug* i love my job :)

[01:46:00] SarahEmm: Flimzy: MPEG4 or RT-JPEG or MPEG2?
[01:46:00] Flimzy: RT-JPEG I believe

[01:47:00] ledhed: oneo, I also have a Special Edition SilverStone Lascala 1 (SST-LC01-S-IR) with an IR window. I don't think they make it anymore though
[01:47:00] Lanz: Looks like it is.
[01:47:00] SarahEmm: Lanz: no, it's not.
[01:47:00] Flimzy: Would mp4 or mp2 have a better chance?
[01:47:00] SarahEmm: Lanz: you need to start the backend..
[01:47:00] Lanz: How do I start it?
[01:47:00] SarahEmm: try /etc/init.d/mythbackend start
[01:47:00] SarahEmm: Flimzy: RT-JPEG uses the least CPU
[01:47:00] SarahEmm: MPEG4 needs a fair bit of CPU
[01:47:00] SarahEmm: i dunno about MPEG2

[01:47:00] oneo: ledhed – have you been successful in programming the vfd and getting ir to work with lirc on your lascala 3?
[01:48:00] SarahEmm: Lanz: okay, i don't know how the debian init scripts work
[01:48:00] SarahEmm: try mythbackend --daemon
[01:48:00] Flimzy: SarahEmm: that's kinda what I thought. Hrm
[01:48:00] User901: Any Hauppauge PVR-150 People out there

[01:48:00] ledhed: oneo, yup. but I had to compile MythLCD
[01:48:00] ** SarahEmm not a hauppauge person, i use software encoding with bttv :) Soon i'm going to move to PVR-500 but i need to do some driver hacking first **
[01:48:00] iggy: User901: yeah, but not fedora
[01:48:00] SarahEmm: lanz: oh. run mythsetup then
[01:48:00] Lanz: Should I set the IP as 127.0.0.1?
[01:48:00] Flimzy: i even reduced the resolution to 240x240 and the quality to 150
[01:48:00] Lanz: Ok.
[01:49:00] ledhed: the IR was no problem.
[01:49:00] Flimzy: and it's still very choppy
[01:49:00] Flimzy: I wonder how much is the CPU, and how much is the vid card
[01:49:00] User901: Oh well good luck
[01:49:00] SarahEmm: User901: what's the issue?
[01:49:00] Flimzy: I'll try running Xine/mplayer to see if that helps to narrow down the possibilities
[01:50:00] User901: It seems like my drivers are loading but, When I try to get a signal from the card just get a black screen
[01:50:00] ledhed: oneo, I use the Homebrew serial LIRC interface. I built it and mounted the censor behind the VFD window.
[01:50:00] Lanz: What should the host name be? localhost or debian?
[01:50:00] Lanz: Or an IP address?
[01:50:00] SarahEmm: User901: ahh =-/ i dunno, sorry.
[01:50:00] ** SarahEmm should pick up a -500 soonish i think. **
[01:50:00] SarahEmm: lanz: 127.0.0.1 works okay if it's a standalone machine
[01:50:00] User901: thanks anyway
[01:50:00] Lanz: Ok.
[01:50:00] ledhed: I also soldered the IR cables to the motherboard so that there are no cables comming out of the case
[01:50:00] SarahEmm: if it's going to be the backend server for a network, use the network ip
[01:52:00] Lanz: Holy now it crashes and I get a lot of repetitive errors in konsole...
[01:52:00] SarahEmm: what error?
[01:52:00] SarahEmm: wait..

[01:54:00] SarahEmm: lanz: okay, have you RTFM'ed?

[02:03:00] Flimzy: And in fact... I can run Xine over the network, from 450Mhz, exporting the X display to my desktop... and it's faster than running Xine locally

[02:08:00] ledhed: mchou, its cool that it can use both MythTV and Replay.. (I have both)
[02:08:00] SarahEmm: Flimzy: i'd say it indicates you don't have Xv and DRI working
[02:08:00] ledhed: but I use my Myth mostly as a DVD Jukebox right now
[02:08:00] SarahEmm: so it's passing video through plain X11, sucking up massive amounts of CPU
[02:08:00] Flimzy: SarahEmm: I don't believe either of those are supported by my video card
[02:08:00] mchou: ledhed: going to go buy one? :)
[02:08:00] Flimzy: altho I'm not certian Re: DRI

[02:09:00] Flimzy: SarahEmm: Even w/o Xv and DRI, video playback exported over 100mbit ssh should never be faster than displaying locally :P
[02:09:00] SarahEmm: *shrug*

[02:09:00] Flimzy: SarahEmm: Unless, of course, the local display hardware is sh*t

[02:10:00] Flimzy: Since DRI (and I assume Xv) are not possible over tunneled X

[02:10:00] ledhed: My next buy is a EDTV so that I can do away with DeInterlacing
[02:10:00] SarahEmm: edtv?
[02:10:00] ledhed: though $80 isnt much

[02:11:00] SarahEmm: maybe time to get osmething new, even a cheap new one
[02:11:00] Flimzy: SarahEmm: Found it in a box I forgot I owned... I've had it ~3–4 years, have no idea where I got it. It's just got TV-out, that's the onlyr eason I'm playing with it

[02:12:00] SarahEmm: heh.
[02:12:00] SarahEmm: yeah, probably need something newer.
[02:12:00] Flimzy: I don't see an X driver specifically for that card... altho there is a fb driver for it. I wonder if X's FB driver would be faster than VESA
[02:12:00] ledhed: mchou, do you think there would be a performance hit if I store my recordings and Videos on a Windows Network Share?

[02:33:00] SarahEmm: meow.
[02:33:00] Lanz: Do you guys want ssh access?
[02:33:00] Lanz: I have no problem givin that out.
[02:34:00] Lanz: If you want to try.
[02:34:00] SarahEmm: i'm multitasking between tv and irc so i'm not up for that
[02:34:00] SarahEmm: tv takes more attention than irc :)
[02:34:00] Lanz: Ok.
[02:34:00] SarahEmm: and ssh takes more than irc.
[02:34:00] Lanz: Hehe I bet.
[02:34:00] ** SarahEmm needs to get a remote for the xbox now, that'd pretty much finish off this project. :) **
[02:35:00] Lanz: Like I can log into my sql.
[02:35:00] Lanz: Like this.
[02:35:00] Lanz: Debian:~# mysql -uroot -p
[02:35:00] Lanz: And still it don't work in mythtv.
[02:35:00] SarahEmm: that's via unix sockets though, not tcp
[02:35:00] SarahEmm: what if you specify -h localhost.localdomain
[02:35:00] SarahEmm: also?
[02:36:00] Lanz: ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost.localdomain ' (Using password: YES)
[02:36:00] Lanz: I don't think my settings are localhost@localdomain though.
[02:36:00] SarahEmm: okay, that's your problem
[02:36:00] SarahEmm: you don't have access allowed via that.
[02:37:00] SarahEmm: you need to GRANT it
[02:37:00] Lanz: Ok.
[02:37:00] Lanz: Gow.
[02:37:00] Lanz: How.
[02:37:00] ** SarahEmm pulls up the doc **
[02:37:00] SarahEmm: it's right there.....
[02:37:00] SarahEmm: grant all on mythconverg.* to mythtv@"%.mydomain.com" identified by "mythtv";
[02:38:00] SarahEmm: replace mydomain.com with localdomain, in your case, will restrict the usage to mythtv at any host ending with .localdomain
[02:38:00] Lanz: Ok.
[02:38:00] SarahEmm: (rtfm....)
[02:38:00] Lanz: Grrr ;)
[02:38:00] SarahEmm: grrr?
[02:38:00] Lanz: Jk.
[02:38:00] SarahEmm: k.
[02:38:00] Lanz: Ok now mythtv-setup?
[02:38:00] SarahEmm: the docs are there for a reason :) i just copy/pasted that right out of it.
[02:38:00] SarahEmm: yep.
[02:39:00] Lanz: Same error! lol!
[02:39:00] Lanz: God I'm lovin this.
[02:39:00] SarahEmm: wait
[02:39:00] Flimzy: Can anyone reccomend an inexpensive video card with TV-out that supports MPEG decoding?
[02:39:00] Flimzy: (if such a beast exists)
[02:39:00] Flimzy: To turn a 450Mhz or slower machine into a frontend
[02:39:00] SarahEmm: you need to run this in mysql too lanz: flush privileges;
[02:39:00] SarahEmm: again..... as per the docs.
[02:40:00] Lanz: Ok.
[02:40:00] SarahEmm: Flimzy: err... PVR-350? that's encoding too, but afaik the only card supported by myth that does what you want
[02:43:00] SarahEmm: any luck lanz?
[02:44:00] ** SarahEmm peers around and drops a blunt pin **
[02:44:00] Flimzy: PVR has VGA-output and a TV tuner, and does MPEG encoding/decoding?
[02:44:00] Flimzy: Or just TV out?
[02:44:00] SarahEmm: Flimzy: the -350 does MPEG-2 encoding and decoding
[02:44:00] SarahEmm: and has tv out
[02:44:00] SarahEmm: only tv out
[02:44:00] Flimzy: okay
[02:44:00] Flimzy: I don't think that's what I want
[02:44:00] SarahEmm: okay
[02:44:00] Flimzy: well, not for the frontend anyway
[02:44:00] SarahEmm: it's the only one supported by myth, as far as i know.
[02:44:00] SarahEmm: nothing else supports MPEG hardware decoding
[02:44:00] Flimzy: Okay
[02:45:00] Flimzy: So then I just need a fast enough CPU to do software decoding
[02:45:00] Flimzy: I think my 450 can handle that
[02:45:00] SarahEmm: yeppers.
[02:45:00] SarahEmm: your 450 may be able to with Xv turned on
[02:45:00] Flimzy: If I can get a better vid card :)
[02:45:00] SarahEmm: i'm not sure. it'll be tight, i think.
[02:45:00] Flimzy: yeah
[02:45:00] Flimzy: I'm about to win an auctin on 4 GeForce4 MX 440's
[02:45:00] Flimzy: I'll use one of those
[02:45:00] SarahEmm: hehe, okay.
[02:45:00] Flimzy: I have one in my main box right now I could test with
[02:45:00] Flimzy: probably should have before I bid
[02:45:00] Flimzy: hehe
[02:46:00] Flimzy: Does a Voodoo 3 support Xv?
[02:46:00] ** SarahEmm running onboard intel video on one, onboard laptop intel video on another, a geforce 4 mx 440 on another, and the Xbox's geforce3 on another. **
[02:46:00] Flimzy: I had a Voodoo 3 w/ TV-out once. that'd probably be cheaper than a GF
[02:46:00] SarahEmm: Flimzy: err, i'm not sure but i wouldn't bet on it
[02:46:00] SarahEmm: lanz?
[02:46:00] ** SarahEmm pokes lanz **
[02:46:00] Flimzy: What kind of box is your MX 440 in?

[02:46:00] SarahEmm: Duron 700, flimzy
[02:47:00] Flimzy: And I'm guessing it works great?
[02:47:00] SarahEmm: it works
[02:47:00] Flimzy: heh
[02:47:00] SarahEmm: 'great' is pushing it ;)
[02:47:00] Flimzy: hehe
[02:47:00] SarahEmm: 700 is lowish
[02:47:00] SarahEmm: that's my development backend/frontend tho, so it's not a production frontend
[02:47:00] Flimzy: Hmm
[02:47:00] SarahEmm: so it's less critical.
[02:47:00] Flimzy: I have a Duron 800 CPU only lying around...
[02:47:00] Flimzy: no box for it, tho
[02:47:00] SarahEmm: ahh
[02:47:00] Flimzy: sold my Duron 1.3Ghz a couple months ago
[02:48:00] SarahEmm: the rest of the box is kinda a critical part. :)
[02:48:00] Flimzy: aye
[02:48:00] SarahEmm: i think i'm gonna go concentrate on tv for awhile then go sleepies.
[02:48:00] SarahEmm: good luck lanz, wherever you are.
[02:48:00] SarahEmm: nite nite all :o)
[02:48:00] Flimzy: I'll probably try to find a 1Ghz+ box in the next couple months

[02:55:00] Lanz: Got no where.
[02:55:00] Flimzy: what are you trying, Lanz?
[02:56:00] Flimzy: Is there any mechanism in place within MythTV to make sharing of recorded programs with other people (i.e. over the Internet, or burned to CD, etc) easier?
[02:56:00] Lanz: I'm tryin to get myth tv to work.
[02:56:00] quink: any of you have any issues with audio sync when ripping dvds?
[02:56:00] Lanz: My sql set up.
[02:56:00] Lanz: Its killing me.
[02:56:00] Flimzy: mysql is evil :/
[02:57:00] Lanz: No kiddin.
[02:57:00] GreyFoxx: MySQL is not evil, It's simple to use and to setup
[02:57:00] Lanz: Hahahahaha nope.
[02:57:00] Flimzy: It's harder to use and setup than PostgreSQL
[02:57:00] Agrajag-: hahaha yep
[02:57:00] Flimzy: and has less functionality
[02:57:00] Flimzy: it is evil
[02:57:00] Flimzy: :P
[02:57:00] Flimzy: Unfortunately, a necessary evil
[02:57:00] Flimzy: for this project, anyway
[02:58:00] GreyFoxx: Flimzy: That's a very stupid statement. I said nothing about it's features or compared it to postgres
[02:58:00] Flimzy: then again, I didn't have a lot of trouble getting it to work for this project, either
[02:58:00] GreyFoxx: It's not hard to setup, nor use
[02:58:00] Agrajag-: Flimzy: what functionality does pg have over mysql?
[02:58:00] Flimzy: GreyFoxx: My statement wasn't necisarily a direct responce to what you said. I stand by the truth of my statement, tho.
[02:58:00] Flimzy: Agrajag-: Better scalability is my main interest.
[02:59:00] GreyFoxx: Flimzy: I don't care about how it stacks up against postgres. I was merely responding to the lame "It sucks" comments people fling about
[02:59:00] Agrajag-: that's not functionality
[02:59:00] Lanz: Oh it does suck.
[02:59:00] Lanz: I'm almost in tears.
[02:59:00] Flimzy: Agrajag-: It is if mysql crashes and postgres keeps on going.
[02:59:00] Lanz: It hard.
[02:59:00] Flimzy: I would call that functionality
[02:59:00] Lanz: Frustrating.
[02:59:00] Flimzy: Anyway, this is neither #mysql nor #postgres
[02:59:00] Lanz: Like wow.
[02:59:00] GreyFoxx: Lanz: Than it's more likely you who just doesn't know how to use it. what problems are you running into ?
[02:59:00] Flimzy: So I don't think this conversation is really on-topic
[02:59:00] Lanz: No need for this frustration.
[03:00:00] Flimzy: (not that either of those channels would appreciate such a discussion, either)
[03:00:00] Lanz: I'm tryin to get mythtv-setup to work.
[03:00:00] GreyFoxx: And......
[03:00:00] Lanz: Keep gettin this message Access denied for user: 'root@localhost.localdomain ' (Using password: YES)
[03:01:00] GreyFoxx: When you installed it, did you set a password for the root SQL user?
[03:01:00] Agrajag-: Lanz: you're not setting up myth to use the mysql root user are you?
[03:01:00] Lanz: WOO HOO!!!
[03:01:00] Lanz: Got it to work.
[03:01:00] Lanz: Yeah.
[03:01:00] Lanz: Right on.
[03:01:00] GreyFoxx: What did you do ?
[03:01:00] Lanz: Wow that frustrated me.
[03:01:00] Agrajag-: that's an extremely stupid thing to do if you are
[03:01:00] Lanz: I don't know, that's the best part!

[03:02:00] Lanz: And yeah I'm runnin as root cause I'm too lazy to set up users and permissions.
[03:02:00] Lanz: So sue me.
[03:02:00] GreyFoxx: mythfrontend
[03:02:00] Flimzy: Lanz: What distribution do you use?
[03:02:00] kormoc: [Klatuu], real time periority requires suid root or root
[03:02:00] Flimzy: Linux distribution, that is
[03:02:00] Lanz: I'm on Debian.
[03:02:00] GreyFoxx: Lanz: Right, "grant all on mythconverg.* to 'mythtv'@'localhost' identified by 'mythtv'; " is a hard thing to do
[03:02:00] Flimzy: Lanz: Why aren't you using the Debian packages, then?
[03:03:00] [Klatuu]: yes
[03:03:00] Flimzy: Lanz: That takes care of all the silly user/permission stuff for you
[03:03:00] [Klatuu]: but I was wondering what file needed to be SUID

[03:03:00] [Klatuu]: is that a normal thing?

[03:03:00] GreyFoxx: sometimes I set it, sometimes I don't

[03:04:00] [Klatuu]: for livetv
[03:04:00] Lanz: I'm using the deb packages.
[03:04:00] [Klatuu]: but the buffer is fine
[03:04:00] GreyFoxx: [Klatuu]: What kind of card ?
[03:04:00] [Klatuu]: PVR-500
[03:04:00] Lanz: And Agrajag-, you can shove it.
[03:04:00] GreyFoxx: Is it trying to use the wrong input maybe? Like read from svideo/composite instead of the tuner ?
[03:04:00] [Klatuu]: a manual cat /dev/video0 >test.mpg gets good ideo and audio
[03:05:00] [Klatuu]: if I look at the buffer nuv file it is fine
[03:05:00] [Klatuu]: so it is getting the right input
[03:05:00] [Klatuu]: it just doesn't show anything
[03:05:00] GreyFoxx: ahhh, ok, so recording is fine then
[03:05:00] GreyFoxx: hrm, never had to deal with that one
[03:05:00] [Klatuu]: a burst of audio and a black screen
[03:05:00] GreyFoxx: you hear the proper audio though ?
[03:05:00] [Klatuu]: yeah
[03:05:00] GreyFoxx: Never seen that particular problem
[03:06:00] Flimzy: Does anyone here use MythFM or MythRadio, whichever it's called?
[03:06:00] Lanz: What's this "DataDirect" channel stuff? I'm on antenna.
[03:06:00] Lanz: Where do I register.
[03:06:00] Flimzy: Lanz: It took me a while to find, that, too.
[03:06:00] Flimzy: Lanz: found it in one of the FAQs, not in the docs proper
[03:06:00] GreyFoxx: Lanz: It's detailed in the mythtv.org docs. It's to let you pull down the channel/program listings
[03:06:00] Lanz: Ok thanks.

[03:08:00] GreyFoxx: Flimzy: I don't think so
[03:08:00] [Klatuu]: no decoder on the PVR-500
[03:08:00] Flimzy: Blah, SarahEmm musta misunderstood my question
[03:09:00] Flimzy: Are there any Video cards with TV-out and hardware MPEG _decoding_ with Linux support?
[03:09:00] GreyFoxx: Lanz: The docs related to getting a zap2it account are here on the main mtyhtv.org docs : http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-5.html#ConfigureDD
[03:09:00] GreyFoxx: Flimzy: Only one I know of is the 350
[03:09:00] m1ke: Flimzy, pvr-350
[03:09:00] Flimzy: maybe that's what she told me... I dunno
[03:10:00] Flimzy: What card(s) do you all prefer?
[03:11:00] m1ke: i'm quite happy with my 350
[03:11:00] Flimzy: mike: Is that the only card you use?
[03:11:00] iggy: I'm selling my 350, I've moved to lcd w/ dvi input
[03:11:00] Flimzy: iggy: how much?
[03:12:00] iggy: $150 according to http://www.brianandsara.net/temp/forsale.html

[03:13:00] Flimzy: nope, they're not
[03:13:00] Flimzy: the same product on pricewatch is $175
[03:14:00] iggy: yeah
[03:14:00] Flimzy: Is the 250 the same, minus mpeg decoder?
[03:14:00] iggy: and no FM
[03:15:00] Flimzy: ah
[03:15:00] Flimzy: Do you use the FM with MythTV?
[03:15:00] iggy: well, I think the mce's have FM, but no remote
[03:15:00] Flimzy: I'd like the ability to record FM broadcasts, as well...
[03:15:00] iggy: not with mythtv, but I've used it

[03:24:00] iggy: that's a tough question to answer

[05:51:00] TheUni3: not even as root
[05:51:00] Cromz: jwaugh: it works ok. MythTv can use a ir emiter to change the channels on a sat box. but with ir there are some issues, like it may not hit the right channel at least till you tweak everything heh.. like the sleep delay between ir signals and placement of the ir emiter.
[05:51:00] mag0o: try browsing .mysql_history
[05:52:00] TheUni3: mag0o, where's that?

[06:03:00] jwaugh: That sounds pretty cool... the only thing that's making me hesitant on using MythTV is the fact the IR Blaster setup doesn't sound too easy for a n00b. Why can't it just change the channel like the stupid receiver does? That'd be pretty swell
[06:04:00] jwaugh: Sorry, that was stupid. It's because you can't put the DirecTV card in your computer. :-) Sorry for that dumb remark.

[06:06:00] Cromz: recently I've been playing city of heroes, while myth is running. seems to be ok. heh.. hmm I dunno. I bought a pvr350 cause I wanted the encoder / deconder on the card when I deciede to redo it and use tv out.

[06:09:00] jwaugh: What is involved in hooking up an IR blaster? Does MythTV support it to begin with or does it involve a special plug-in / homemade script ?
[06:09:00] jwaugh: :-D
[06:10:00] Cromz: it does support it, long as you compile it in. there is an option for it.. I don't remember it off hand. but I had to go back and recomplie cause I didn't know lol
[06:11:00] Cromz: the other stuff for the ir blaster.. is lirc that is the tricky part. or can be.

[17:43:00] wasabi: I was looking at the M-9000
[17:43:00] Ashlar: backend = box that actually does the recording.. frontend = the 'player' that does the display
[17:44:00] wasabi: hmmmmm
[17:44:00] wasabi: so what, the raw uncompressed video is shunted from the frontend to the backend?
[17:44:00] Ashlar: well, I wouldn't say raw, uncomplressed, no
[17:44:00] Ashlar: but simple client – server paradigm
[17:45:00] wasabi: well im thinking about recording... which is pretty intensive encoding.
[17:45:00] wasabi: does it happen on the front end or the backend?
[17:45:00] wasabi: where does the tvtuner go?
[17:45:00] Ashlar: wasabi: not if you get a PVR-x50 card.. does hardware encoding, so not much CPU required
[17:45:00] Ashlar: recording / tuners on the backend
[17:45:00] wasabi: hmmmm
[17:46:00] wasabi: That means I now need two PCs heh. =(

[17:46:00] wasabi: if the encoding is happening with this pvr card...
[17:47:00] marc_in_lux: the card does all the work, everything the pc needs to do is disk i/o
[17:47:00] Ashlar: Xoritor: nope.. all it needs is a good video card, and decent performance.. if you're doing HDTV, tho, the frontend needs to be beefier

[18:03:00] wasabi: ahh.
[18:04:00] wasabi: oh there we go
[18:04:00] wasabi: i can get a "DOM"
[18:04:00] laga: that's a scute TFT ;)
[18:04:00] laga: -s
[18:04:00] wasabi: http://www.globalamericaninc.com/other/dom.php
[18:04:00] laga: i was going to get one for my car...
[18:06:00] wasabi: okay, so explain this: i have this miniitx system with a pvr x50 and tv out. It's all hooked up to the video in and tv out. Works at that point to watch TV.
[18:06:00] wasabi: When I want to record something... how do I make it record to another machine? Just use an NFS mount?
[18:06:00] wasabi: or is that naturally part of the backend/frontend thing?
[18:07:00] Ashlar: wasabi: you could, yah it can record to a local fs, or nfs'd fs
[18:07:00] wasabi: The thing about NFS I'm worried about is it tends to suck in situations where one end goes down. Just a long time out. There are situations I can imagine where my nfs server woudl be down, rebooting, or I'd be doing things with it, but would still want to watch the TV.
[18:08:00] wasabi: I'm worried mythtv would get locked up waiting for it. ;)
[18:08:00] Ashlar: true.. so stick a hd in the box.. or use the mini-itx as just a frontend and put the pvr-250 in your nfs server and set up the backend there
[18:08:00] wasabi: I want no moving parts in the box. ;)
[18:09:00] laga: wasabi: you can mount the share with the "soft" option, i guess.
[18:09:00] laga: or is it a server side option? dunno.
[18:09:00] wasabi: i dunno. I just always find that NFS sucks.
[18:09:00] wasabi: Usually needs to be remounted if the server has rebooted...
[18:09:00] wasabi: and I kinda want this frontend to be hands off
[18:09:00] laga: this is linux: don't reboot ;)
[18:10:00] Ashlar: yah, nfs can be kinda wonky... so if you have a server with decent speed and large hard drive space, make it the backend.. then just use the mini-itx as a frontend.. it doesn't have to use nfs, the myth protocol streams tv nicely
[18:10:00] wasabi: if I make it the backend, then I need the pvr350 to be on it.
[18:10:00] wasabi: In which case the video is going thru the network, right?
[18:10:00] Ashlar: right..
[18:10:00] wasabi: in which case the same problem applies, just worse.
[18:10:00] wasabi: I can't watch TV when the server is down heh
[18:11:00] Ashlar: but you'd never know.. folks (myself included) are using 802.11G and see no problems
[18:11:00] Ashlar: well, if the server is down, you're screwed anyhoo.. heh
[18:11:00] wasabi: I'd like it to fail gracefully basicaly, and this server just be for long term storage
[18:11:00] wasabi: oh yeah that's true, because it needs mysql someplace

[23:37:00] dopester: naw thats great
[23:37:00] dhofstra: ok
[23:37:00] xris: dopester: still not sure what you mean about integrating with mythfilldatabase, though
[23:37:00] dopester: you can try setting the "fta channels only" checkbox off and re-scaning
[23:37:00] dopester: it might get more channels
[23:37:00] dhofstra: ok i'll try
[23:38:00] dopester: just keep in mind if they ARE encrypred the frontend hangs :(
[23:38:00] dopester: you have re-set the startchannel and re-start the backend
[23:38:00] Bogus8: grr, getting hard lockups with this new driver
[23:38:00] Bogus8: nvidia FX 5200
[23:39:00] Beirdo: nice...
[23:39:00] Beirdo: CVS mythtv isn't deleting the recording
[23:40:00] xris: odd
[23:41:00] Beirdo: it's marked as deleting, but it's not deleting it
[23:42:00] Beirdo: funky
[23:42:00] Beirdo: I can delete from mythweb though
[23:43:00] xris: weird
[23:43:00] ** dhofstra thanks whoever for the irclog... just saved my butt again **
[23:44:00] Beirdo: no problem, dhofstra
[23:44:00] dhofstra: hehe I though you might be behind it.. good job

[23:45:00] dhofstra: now if we could just corroborate all the questions asked in here together and group like questions with each other, we could have maybe 5 questions total.. (gentoo, lirc, ivtv, oh yeah and mythtv

[23:46:00] xris: dhofstra: don't forget "should I drink american beer?"
[23:46:00] dhofstra: LOL
[23:46:00] dhofstra: at least it isnt American politics anymore.. glad that election is over.. whew
[23:46:00] Beirdo: hehe
[23:46:00] simon_c (~simon@geordie.demon.co.uk) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[23:46:00] lucas333: sudo make install tells me: /src/moc/ no such file or directory. while logging in as root & make install works fine. echo $PATH as mythtv user gives the correct qtpath: /usr/qt/3/ anybody know whats up?
[23:47:00] xris: glad's not the word I'd use to describe the feeling.. but I know what you mean.
[23:47:00] Beirdo: and the criminal bastard stole it again.
[23:47:00] dhofstra: he he
[23:49:00] dhofstra: lucas333 try the echo $PATH as sudo ; sudo echo $PATH
[23:49:00] dopester: xris: making the matching happen everytime you run mythfilldatabase if the source you are using is attached to a dvb card
[23:50:00] xris: dopester: there is no matching, though. once you run my script, there is only one source.
[23:50:00] dhofstra: ooooh sweet someones improving that dvb channels thingy ... I cant wait.
[23:50:00] dopester: right but why do you need to run the script. shoudl be able to do it within ram in mythfilldatabase
[23:51:00] lucas333: dhofsra: both sudo echo $PATH and sudo echo $QTDIR exactly match the outputs as echo $PATH and echo $QTDIR in "native root" mode
[23:51:00] dhofstra: I was going to try xris' script today, but got sidetracked on this losing qam thing
[23:51:00] xris: but then you end up with a bunch of blank channels in mythweb's channel listing.
[23:51:00] xris: I don't want an extra listings source if it's unneeded.
[23:51:00] dopester: you only add listings for channels you match the rest gets canned
[23:51:00] dopester: you don't need an extra source
[23:51:00] agile (~mike@24.182.108.114) has joined #mythtv-users
[23:51:00] dhofstra: lucas333 dunno then..
[23:51:00] xris: dopester: are you saying that mythfilldatabase would perform a channel scan?
[23:52:00] dopester: no mythfilldatabase would match the listings if no xmltvid was listed
[23:52:00] xris: how would you get something without an xmltvid unless you did a channel scan?

[23:54:00] Beirdo: Sympatico says you are in Montreal, SarahEmm :)
[23:54:00] Beirdo: Go, Sympatico
[23:54:00] dhofstra: lucas333 can you just login as root in the user terminal? like su or sux
[23:54:00] dopester: xris: everytime the atsc/dvb table version revs you have the potential for adding new channels
[23:54:00] dopester: it all happens in teh background
[23:54:00] SarahEmm: Beirdo: i know :) i move between Toronto and Montreal every few months according to it ;)

[23:55:00] Beirdo: my mother's been to Sherbrooke according to them
[23:55:00] Beirdo: funny how the Danforth is suddenly in Sherbrooke

[23:57:00] xris: dopester: then we need to find a better way to handle things.
[23:57:00] Beirdo: SarahEmm: get soldering :)
[23:58:00] SarahEmm: Beirdo: hehe :)
[23:58:00] dopester: let me just code it into mythfilldatabase
[23:58:00] xris: dopester: by all means.
[23:58:00] SarahEmm: once it's set up it wont' be an issue, and the only things left are to make mythfrontend start up at boot, and to make the remote work
[23:58:00] SarahEmm: both of which i'm finishing up tonite, with luck
[23:58:00] dopester: i got a few hours should be able to bang it out
[23:58:00] xris: I am apparently not seeing what you mean, since it still looks to me like you'd need to run another channel scan, etc.
[23:59:00] SarahEmm: with as little RAM as this has tho, sometimes things just hang for a bit hwile it swaps.. it'd be nice to know it's actually doing something
[23:59:00] dopester: nope not at all
[23:59:00] dopester: 3 step process..

[23:59:00] dopester: 1. check and see if there are any cannels that have ota epg disabled
[23:59:00] dopester: 2. see if any of those channels have blank xmltvids
[23:59:00] xris: but if you don't run another scan, how do you get new channels? and if there are no new channels, why bother putting my script into mythfilldatabase?
[23:59:00] dopester: 3. fill in the missing xmltvids
[23:59:00] dopester: 4. finish attaching data to the channels that exist and toss the rest
[23:59:00] xris: dopester: my script does the opposite of that.
