[00:25:00] bobc: anyone know why gam_server would suddenly start chew up a lot of cpu whenever watching recorded or live tv on a remote frontend? no problem with videos though.
[00:26:00] bobc: running kubuntu 5.0.4
[00:26:00] levon: yeah, gam_server loves to chew...
[00:27:00] levon: maybe it monitors files, and since livetv causes the file date to change continously, it may be updating things...
[00:28:00] bobc: it's taking 20–50% of my cpu while watching videos on my duron 650 and causes frequent pauses from hitting 100% total with the mythfrontend.
[00:28:00] bobc: recorded files wouldn't change the date though do they?
[00:29:00] levon: hm, not to my knowledge. sure the recording is finished?
[00:29:00] bobc: oh yeah, happens with any recording

[01:58:00] bobc: at the very end of the ivtv section in /var/log/messages, third from the last is a line that goes "tuner: type set to 57 by ivtv", right?
[01:59:00] bobc: or is it a different number?
[01:59:00] maddhaggis: Which boot script do I use?
[02:00:00] bobc: depends on the distro you're running
[02:00:00] maddhaggis: FC3
[02:00:00] Shibz: cx:25840: Unable to open FW file '/lib/modules/HcwMakoA.ROM'

[02:00:00] bobc: that's not good...
[02:00:00] Shibz: it also says "type set to 0"
[02:01:00] bobc: HcwMakoA.ROM is the firmware
[02:01:00] Shibz: firmware, isn't that stored on the tuner card it's self?
[02:01:00] topping: i think some of that poo is on the CD too
[02:02:00] bobc: hauppage loads it at modprobe so that it can be upgraded
[02:02:00] topping: checked the readme with the ivtv distro?
[02:02:00] ethics: cp /cdrom/WinTV-PVR-150500MCE_2.0.18.22316_WHQL_signed/HcwMakoA.ROM /lib/modules ITS ON YOUR DRIVER CD FROM THE BOX APPRENTLY

[02:03:00] bobc: I copied mine from the cd. it's mentioned in the howto: http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-index.php?page=PVR150-500Firmware
[02:03:00] bobc: Knoppmyth may not have included it yet, I guess
[02:04:00] ethics: ok so heres a possibly stupid question ....i have a baby celeron 566 i can buy a PVR card for or i can wait for a new PC .....would a cele 500 be ok with say a pvr 150 or should i go mpeg2 out
[02:05:00] bobc: would be ok
[02:06:00] bobc: some caveats though
[02:06:00] topping: anyone know of a way to import existing mp3s into mythmusic? can mythmusic read id3tags to put into the database?
[02:06:00] fryfrog: the celly 566 prolly won't play great, but you could use it as a backend prolly?
[02:06:00] bobc: may not play 720x480 well, but close

[02:23:00] dhofstra: you can setup lirc later
[02:23:00] dhofstra: has no bearing if you set it up now or way down the road.. it works independantly of mythtv (unless you want to compile myth with builtin lirc bindings)
[02:24:00] dhofstra: myth can be compiled to use native lirc (which I much prefer) it is a compile time option. if it is not, you will have to use irxevent to send the keystrokes (which works ok for most people)

[03:38:00] dhofstra: myth livetv is always 2–3 sec behind realtime , so therefore there is a lag
[03:38:00] weasie: I think that it might be even longer than that on my 150
[03:38:00] weasie: it is noticably slower than with my 250
[03:38:00] RossTFarian: just go into settings / tv settings and choose "always use browse mode"
[03:38:00] weasie: the fun part is, that the 150 is running on a much faster macine
[03:38:00] dhofstra: yes browse mode is a must
[03:38:00] RossTFarian: should be default
[03:39:00] weasie: I never have used browse mode
[03:39:00] weasie: what does it do that is so special?
[03:39:00] dhofstra: I actually notice my channel changes fastest on my remote frontend; browse mode should be the default.. it is sooo nice
[03:39:00] RossTFarian: you don't actually change channels until you hit enter – you can browse the channel data as fast as you want tho – no 2–3 seconds
[03:40:00] weasie: aah, I just bring up the EPG
[03:40:00] weasie: then I scroll through that with the picture in the upper right
[03:40:00] weasie: when I find what I want, I move to it from there
[03:40:00] RossTFarian: same same but different ;)
[03:40:00] dhofstra: in all reality, much of livetv (i.e. sat and cable boxes) have a delay nowadays, and browse mode is the only 'useable' way even on those boxes to manage channel changes
[03:40:00] weasie: yeah, I hate the comcast box lag
[03:41:00] weasie: I don't use that for my Myth, I do direct cable into the box since I am not recording anything on cable channels that need decoding
[03:41:00] weasie: however, I want to start messing witht he firewire stuff as I do have an HDTV and and HDTV cable box, that will be interesting
[03:41:00] weasie: need much more hard drive space though :)

[07:26:00] Cardoe: 0.18
[07:26:00] kormoc: .18
[07:26:00] mchou: release or cvs?
[07:26:00] Cardoe: it's been happening since 0.13
[07:26:00] kormoc: release
[07:26:00] Cardoe: when I started using it
[07:26:00] Cardoe: mchou: don't tell me to switch to CVS
[07:26:00] Cardoe: cause I did a while back
[07:26:00] Cardoe: just for this.
[07:26:00] mchou: no, I was just asking.
[07:27:00] kormoc: .18 is the first release for myself that has done this
[07:27:00] Cardoe: cause they'd say it's fixed.
[07:27:00] Cardoe: and it wasn't
[07:27:00] Cardoe: well see... it's a modified problem
[07:27:00] Cardoe: because previous releases the frontend would lock up for like 5 min
[07:27:00] Cardoe: then kick back out with an error
[07:27:00] Cardoe: instead now it completely locks up until a backend restart
[07:28:00] mchou: Cardoe: maybe you should use cvs. There is a branch called 0.18-fixes :)
[07:28:00] kormoc: well, I'll see what .18.1 fixes :)
[07:29:00] Cardoe: mchou: no thanks.
[07:29:00] Cardoe: I'll just live with it.
[07:29:00] mchou: 0.18-fixes==0.18.1 :)
[07:29:00] Cardoe: but there's more going intoit
[07:30:00] Cardoe: and I doubt it's fixed
[07:30:00] Cardoe: because Chutt claims it's cause I'm using Gentoo
[07:30:00] kormoc: yeah, I was gonna wait for the release
[07:30:00] kormoc: ooh?
[07:30:00] ** kormoc wonders how that logic works **
[07:30:00] Cardoe: cause we don't use his CFLAGS
[07:30:00] Cardoe: kormoc: Chutt is anti-Gentoo
[07:30:00] kormoc: actually
[07:30:00] Cardoe: his logic is that we don't use his CFLAGS
[07:30:00] mchou: lol. Chut is probably right on this one.
[07:30:00] kormoc: the ebuild I did uses the myth autocflag thing
[07:30:00] Cardoe: but the MythTV ebuild actually uses sanier CFLAGS then he does
[07:31:00] kormoc: so if you used that, it uses myth defaul cflags.
[07:31:00] directhex (~jms@shields.gotadsl.co.uk) has joined #mythtv-users
[07:31:00] kormoc: tho if we can figure out which flag is doing it, we can filter it all nice like
[07:31:00] kormoc: Cardoe, what's your cflags?
[07:32:00] Cardoe: basically -O2
[07:32:00] Cardoe: rather then O3
[07:32:00] maddhaggis (~gbrite@ip68-13-203-45.hr.hr.cox.net) Quit ()
[07:33:00] kormoc: just -O2?
[07:33:00] Cardoe: if it was anything other then file deleting stuff
[07:33:00] Cardoe: -O2 -march=pentium3 -pipe
[07:33:00] kormoc: did you use my mythtv-0.18-r1 ebuild?
[07:33:00] Cardoe: not yet
[07:33:00] ** kormoc nods **
[07:33:00] chkno_ (user@h-67-101-8-87.sttnwaho.covad.net) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[07:33:00] kormoc: it fixes the inverted picture thing all nice like
[07:33:00] Cardoe: I'll use it
[07:34:00] Cardoe: along with a ton of other things
[07:34:00] mchou: Chut is not anti-Gentoo. He is against clueless gentoo user. Big difference.
[07:34:00] ** kormoc nods. **
[07:34:00] oneo: hey all – anyoen know the reason for clearing the buffer every time the channel is changed? is seems like it wouldnt be that big of a deal that you have other channel data on your buffer and it just slows down channel changing because you have to rebuffer every time
[07:35:00] xris: well, the pink bar on my HD stuff appears to be a driver issue.
[07:36:00] Cardoe: eradicator just basically stripped out the sed stuff from 0.17
[07:36:00] Cardoe: since it's auto done now
[07:36:00] Cardoe: and commited that
[07:36:00] intrade (~intrade@p32.tg2.xisp.co.nz) has joined #mythtv-users
[07:36:00] Cardoe: there's lots of issues with the builds
[07:36:00] Cardoe: and I have to go through the eclass
[07:36:00] tuxristo: oneo, i have been thinking about the dvd burn feature too
[07:36:00] aisipos (~anton@dsl081-081-225.lax1.dsl.speakeasy.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[07:37:00] oneo: tux – have you done any work on it/
[07:38:00] tuxristo: basically the simplest way right now would be to use the already excistin "playlist" feature and to add an option to "burn this playlist" right under "play this playlist"
[07:38:00] ** xris lobs trout at ATI for crappy linux support... https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3226 **
[07:39:00] tuxristo: the rest is: porting mythtvburn to c++ to actually do the dvd menus and the actual burn
[07:39:00] tuxristo: and probably a mythtranscode or jobqueue style status screen wouldn't hurt either
[07:40:00] ** xris wishes someone would sanitize the ffmpeg code to help make nuvexport feasible. **
[07:40:00] tuxristo: at least two people have claimed to be working on all this but nothing has come of it so far
[07:41:00] oneo: yah i was thinking the same thing – in recordings theres a perfect place for it when you go to playlist options -> job options...right now it has begin transcoding and commercial flagging so adding a burn button would be perfect
[07:41:00] oneo: UI shouldnt be bad at all – just simple status stuff
[07:42:00] oneo: the worst part would probably be trying to parse the output from the mythtvburn programs
[07:42:00] tuxristo: i don' think it'd be that bad either to do the ui,
[07:43:00] tuxristo: mythtvburn i would rewrite in php first b4 trying to port it
[07:43:00] oneo: it is in php isnt it? its a mythweb plugin
[07:43:00] tuxristo: it does dumb things like write out data in files just to pass it from one poart of the program to another
[07:44:00] oneo: oh gotcha
[07:44:00] tuxristo: it is in php, but i think it needs a rewrite
[07:44:00] oneo: eh might as well start from scratch then
[07:44:00] tuxristo: to its credit it does make quite nifty dvd menus
[07:44:00] oneo: i might take a look at how they do the menus
[07:44:00] tuxristo: :)
[07:45:00] oneo: have you programmed for myth before?
[07:45:00] tuxristo: for that part it works better than the graphical utilities like dvd styler, etc
[07:45:00] stoffel_ is now known as stoffel
[07:45:00] tuxristo: i have done a couple of patches for myth
[07:45:00] ChanServ sets mode +v stoffel
[07:47:00] oneo: it'd be a 3 part thing – checking for dvd/vcd compatability and transcoding if not, building the image file and then finally burning it
[07:49:00] tuxristo: i had mythtvburn working back in the 0.17 days – i have also used nuvexport and dvdstyler
[07:49:00] topping: interesting: http://advancedmediacommittee.typepad.com/emm . . . _nonmyt.html
[07:49:00] topping: probably been posted before
[07:50:00] tuxristo: there are problems with commercial cutting though, as i recall it there can be audio sync issues, but i think it's still worth doing
[07:52:00] mchou: topping: sigh. More ppl using that stupid NY Times article to buttress MPAA position.
[07:52:00] mchou: that NYT article has thoroughly been debunked.
[07:53:00] topping: think so? he's talking about the article, but he seems to have his head screwed on about the industry shoveling crap out the door
[07:53:00] mchou: like we all use myth to get "free tv", right.
[07:54:00] fryfrog: and what was the shit about getting pay per view for free?
[07:54:00] mchou: " In fact, most of what makes the device dangerous to the TV industry is software, not hardware."
[07:54:00] mchou: lol.
[07:54:00] topping: heh, true
[07:54:00] topping: (that he is backing up the mpaa position)
[07:55:00] topping: didn't spot that
[07:55:00] topping: i'm more interested in the cataloging and management at this point
[07:55:00] topping: mchou: have you tried torrentocracy yet?
[07:56:00] mchou: topping: I have no interest in torrent.
[07:56:00] mchou: I think torrent is slower than most mirrors for things like linux distros, etc.
[07:57:00] topping: yes, but the syndication of content via RSS is sweet
[07:57:00] topping: replace torrent with whatever you want, the combo is nice
[07:57:00] mchou: it is good however for "repairing" a big file that has a bad md5sum.
[08:01:00] directhex (~jms@shields.gotadsl.co.uk) Quit ("Leaving")

[08:03:00] SlicerDicer-: yay
[08:04:00] SlicerDicer-: hi! I love my mythtv setup btw I been recordling like mag
[08:04:00] SlicerDicer-: err wth....
[08:04:00] SlicerDicer-: recording like mad lol

[08:04:00] kormoc: yoyo slicer
[08:04:00] SlicerDicer-: anyway I was wondering if you know of another place that sells stuff like newegg I am looking to buy a 15–17 inch flat panel
[08:04:00] mchou: yeah, good deal.
[08:05:00] SlicerDicer-: yoyo kormoc
[08:05:00] fryfrog: dell has a 20" widescreen lcd that has gotten really good reviews
[08:05:00] ** SlicerDicer- makes a yo-yo fly at kormoc and barely miss his forehead :P **
[08:05:00] topping: SlicerDicer-: did you check froogle?
[08:05:00] mchou: lol. I'm a firm believer in CRT. No flat panels for me.
[08:05:00] fryfrog: its like $700 ish, but if you get in on a lucky day you can get it for like $350
[08:05:00] ** topping saved $4000 on his monitor using froogle **
[08:05:00] SlicerDicer-: mchou: I hear that but my main moniter is going to be a apple 23inch :) so I want something for my other box that has a shitty compaq moniter on it
[08:05:00] mchou: I've got 2 22" CRTS on my desk.
[08:06:00] SlicerDicer-: :)
[08:06:00] SlicerDicer-: mine is a 21inch viewsonic and its dien
[08:06:00] mchou: dying?
[08:06:00] SlicerDicer-: its had 4 years of indentured servatude
[08:06:00] SlicerDicer-: yeah
[08:06:00] topping: that's pretty short
[08:06:00] topping: i'd be pissed
[08:06:00] mchou: monitor should last 7yrs.
[08:06:00] SlicerDicer-: its older :)
[08:07:00] SlicerDicer-: I got it used at a smokin deal
[08:07:00] SlicerDicer-: 21 inch for 150$ lol
[08:07:00] topping: haha
[08:07:00] SlicerDicer-: 4 years ago!
[08:07:00] topping: nice
[08:07:00] SlicerDicer-: that was dead dog cheap at the time
[08:07:00] mchou: lol, I got both my 22" for $89 apiece.
[08:07:00] SlicerDicer-: nice mchou
[08:07:00] xris: mchou: manufacturer's lifespan for a 19" or larger is 1–2 years
[08:07:00] kormoc: slicer, I love my 19" dell 1905fp, got it for $260 on a nice deal
[08:07:00] SlicerDicer-: anyway yeah I am upgrading going the apple display
[08:07:00] SlicerDicer-: I have always wanted one but that stupid ADC stopped me
[08:08:00] xris: kormoc: you suck. I should have taken that deal.
[08:08:00] mchou: xris: where do you get that???
[08:08:00] kormoc: xris, yeah, you should have :)
[08:08:00] SlicerDicer-: kormoc: slick
[08:08:00] topping: did you guys get have to navigate around all the aeron chairs on the way out the place you were buying those monitors from? :-)
[08:08:00] kormoc: SlicerDicer-, want me to let ya know if I see another deal like that?
[08:08:00] SlicerDicer-: well in 5 days I am getting my new moniter
[08:08:00] mchou: xris: even envision (a crappy brand) warrantees their 19" monitors for 3 yrs.
[08:08:00] kormoc: yeah?
[08:08:00] xris: mchou: same place where plasma displays were originally expected to last 2–3 years.. there's a REASON why warranties are only 1–3 years.
[08:08:00] SlicerDicer-: actually 2 new ones
[08:09:00] xris: mchou: not in the 90's they didn't.
[08:09:00] SlicerDicer-: btw kormoc want my old ones :) lol I will give them to you if you can squeeze life out of them
[08:09:00] topping: i got seven years out of my old viewsonic 21"
[08:09:00] SlicerDicer-: you live near enough by haha
[08:09:00] kormoc: SlicerDicer-, what are they?
[08:09:00] xris: things have gotten a lot better.
[08:09:00] ** kormoc is in need of better monitors for Ariel's box. **
[08:09:00] SlicerDicer-: well the 21 inch has issues and I am not a moniter expert the image will wobble on the edges if you know how to fix it or whatever its yours
[08:10:00] kormoc: hrm
[08:10:00] SlicerDicer-: viewsonic g810 its very nice 1280x1024 @ 85hz
[08:10:00] kormoc: yeah? just old?
[08:10:00] mchou: xris: http://www.envisiondisplay.com/support.asp?EP . . . =lcdwarranty
[08:10:00] SlicerDicer-: just I dont know why its flickering on the edges it just recently started about 4 months ago it does it at random
[08:10:00] SlicerDicer-: I dont normally see it at native resolution only at say gentoo livecd resolution
[08:10:00] topping: g810 should support 1880x1400, no?
[08:10:00] xris: mchou: I don't doubt you. call me jaded — I've been dealing with this kind of thing for about 8 years now.
[08:10:00] SlicerDicer-: topping: it goes a load more than that
[08:11:00] SlicerDicer-: it goes to 2408 or some crazy number IIRC
[08:11:00] topping: that's what i had mine at...
[08:11:00] SlicerDicer-: but the refreshrate would drive you batty
[08:11:00] xris: my 19" viewsonic is about 6 years old now and only just starting to show ghosting.
[08:11:00] topping: think mine was a p800
[08:11:00] topping: 70hz... the minimum
[08:11:00] mchou: topping: I'm sitting in my nice aeron chair right now :)
[08:11:00] topping: hehe
[08:11:00] SlicerDicer-: hey kormoc I dont know what the deal is with the moniter maybe it just does not like the low res I dont know
[08:11:00] kormoc: SlicerDicer-, I'm intrested in the g810, but I'd like to take a look at it first.
[08:11:00] topping: "if you buy two monitors, we'll GIVE YOU THIS CHAIR!!!"
[08:12:00] SlicerDicer-: 2048x1536 @ 61Hz thats the max
[08:12:00] SlicerDicer-: I knew it was some crazy number hah
[08:12:00] topping: my current monitor is set at 3840x2400
[08:12:00] kormoc: the other one is just gonna die ,like my 19" did, and I couldn't fix that so hope for this one is not good neather :)
[08:12:00] FITH: my p810 is finally dying after 7 or so years... Everyone in a while there's a cracking sound, and by smell and sound you can tell it's rewelding a cold solder joint somewhere inside... then it's fine for a week or two... I'm guessing one of these times it's going to blow :)
[08:12:00] xris: topping: that's insane.
[08:12:00] topping: yummy loads of pixels
[08:12:00] SlicerDicer-: lol
[08:12:00] FITH: topping: Single tube/panel?
[08:13:00] topping: 22" panel
[08:13:00] topping: (single)
[08:13:00] FITH: Wow... *nice*! :)
[08:13:00] SlicerDicer-: kormoc: I really dont know I can also say the color looks like shit if you game but its fine if you just browse or whatever but if your going to run a game or look at pictures the colors bleed together
[08:13:00] SlicerDicer-: I dont know why it does that
[08:13:00] kormoc: hrm
[08:13:00] topping: has 4 DVI inputs to drive it, but i only use two
[08:13:00] topping: 25Hz
[08:13:00] kormoc: sounds like electron gun is a bit out of sync.
[08:13:00] SlicerDicer-: maybe
[08:13:00] SlicerDicer-: is it fixable?
[08:14:00] kormoc: if that's the problem, nope :P
[08:14:00] mchou: FITH: that sounds like a bad capacitor.
[08:14:00] mchou: should be easy to replace.
[08:14:00] SlicerDicer-: drat
[08:14:00] topping: you can test tube capacitors with your tounge
[08:14:00] mchou: lol.
[08:14:00] mchou: and then die?
[08:14:00] SlicerDicer-: well kormoc I guess its going out then eh?
[08:14:00] FITH: mchou: Yeah, except that a bad cap wouldn't recover from a complete short would it?
[08:14:00] topping: if you live, it's a bad cap
[08:14:00] kormoc: yeah, tis okay :)
[08:15:00] SlicerDicer-: hey mchou I took one of those stupid ass disposible cameras apart and zapped myself to hell and gone onetime never do that
[08:15:00] kormoc: flash caps are rockin powerful
[08:15:00] SlicerDicer-: it hurts heh
[08:15:00] mchou: lol.
[08:15:00] FITH: you can actually hear a loud snap, and the picture goes clean (well, it's 6 years old so it's a BIT fuzzy :)
[08:15:00] SlicerDicer-: yeah I know kormoc I learnt the hard way
[08:15:00] kormoc: heh
[08:15:00] FITH: lol
[08:15:00] SlicerDicer-: although I grabbed live 120 onetime too so me and electricty stay away from eachother now
[08:15:00] xris: SlicerDicer-: I had an old camera flash in high school that I used to play with like that. charge it up, and then cross the leads on the cap with a screwdriver.
[08:15:00] topping: we used to bring caps on the school bus as a kid
[08:16:00] xris: big POP, and a slightly melted screwdriver
[08:16:00] SlicerDicer-: xris: human flesh touched mine
[08:16:00] mchou: FITH: either a bad cap or your flyback transformer is shorting out.....
[08:16:00] SlicerDicer-: my human flesh....
[08:16:00] xris: SlicerDicer-: I was never that dumb.  ;)
[08:16:00] SlicerDicer-: xris: it was a mistake taking it apart :P
[08:16:00] FITH: Heh, I cut though a live circuit in the house at one point (the jagoff that did the basement here put 2 circuits into the same junction box), took out a 1/8" sphere out of my tinsnips
[08:16:00] xris: heh
[08:16:00] SlicerDicer-: kinda fell on my palm of hand
[08:16:00] mchou: FITH: a flyback transformer gets expensive to replace.
[08:16:00] xris: anyway, I'm headed to sleep. 'night all.
[08:17:00] xris (~xris@xris.forevermore.net) has left #mythtv-users
[08:17:00] SlicerDicer-: well kormoc there is a computer shop down in bellvue if you want a crt they got some there for like 150$ that are used
[08:17:00] SlicerDicer-: I can give you the address if you want
[08:17:00] kormoc: sure
[08:17:00] FITH: mchou: Hmmm... I wonder why it "bounces back" for a week+ after each snap? Bah, I'll have to take it to someone who a) has a schematic and/or b) is willing to drain the high voltage to work on it
[08:17:00] SlicerDicer-: I buy alot of computer parts from them they are good people
[08:18:00] kormoc: (btw Slicer, xris is my co-worker/manager/boss at my new job, he's quite cool)
[08:18:00] SlicerDicer-: ahh cool
[08:18:00] SlicerDicer-: now kormoc beings you are working where you do I got a question for ya
[08:18:00] mchou: FITH: what do you mean by "bounces back?"
[08:18:00] kormoc: yeah?
[08:19:00] SlicerDicer-: I want to expand my harddrive capacity I am filling my current harddrives up with mythtv recordings
[08:19:00] ** kormoc nods **
[08:19:00] topping: SlicerDicer-: get a 3ware card
[08:19:00] mchou: SlicerDicer-: lvm is your firend.
[08:19:00] SlicerDicer-: lvm?
[08:19:00] mchou: hell no. 3ware is overkill.
[08:19:00] topping: lvm is your fiend
[08:19:00] kormoc: SlicerDicer-, lvm is the new thing lately
[08:19:00] SlicerDicer-: ahh
[08:19:00] FITH: mchou: The image is unstable, flickering for a bit... then it goes black and *cracks* really quickly... Then it's stable for a week or two
[08:19:00] mchou: logical volume manager.
[08:19:00] kormoc: it's like a jbod raid level thats a lot more flexable and dynamic and cool
[08:20:00] topping: FITH: write it off... that's what mine was doing
[08:20:00] FITH: topping: heh, it's been doing this for about 1.5 years now :)
[08:20:00] kormoc: I'd recommend going with lvm, I agree
[08:20:00] topping: yow!
[08:20:00] SlicerDicer-: well kormoc I got a mini atx board so you know running my mythtv and it does a great job and I could put 2 more cards if I wanted in there
[08:20:00] mchou: FITH: sounds like flyback is shorting out (windings are starting to break)
[08:20:00] kormoc: 3ware cards are wonderful tihngs, I own one, but it's just too costly to get a card that supports that many devices
[08:20:00] ** kormoc nods **
[08:20:00] SlicerDicer-: btw I got that board on closeout price at the store with the moniters for 29bucks cant complain there :)
[08:21:00] FITH: mchou: Yeah, I figure it's a write off... I've gotten a lot of use out of it, and I've got a p225f now, so it's a emergency spare :)
[08:21:00] FITH: and/or second screen sometimes
[08:21:00] kormoc: lvm doesn't need any extra hardware beyond normal ide controlers
[08:21:00] mchou: FITH: nice.
[08:21:00] kormoc: and you can dynamically add and/or remove drives and what not
[08:21:00] kormoc: it's nice
[08:22:00] SlicerDicer-: kormoc: check this out http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128237 thats the board I got
[08:22:00] SlicerDicer-: well anyway I want to expand the space but the problem is I only have so much space in that case so something external would have to do for me
[08:22:00] kormoc: awesome for $29
[08:22:00] SlicerDicer-: hell yeah
[08:22:00] ** kormoc nods. **
[08:23:00] SlicerDicer-: what would you advise for external and storage I dont really want a usb drive I want something faster but I have no idea what to do
[08:23:00] mchou: SlicerDicer-: go internal if at all possible. Externals will set you back a mint.
[08:23:00] GeckoFiend (~donavan@dialup-4.252.92.238.Dial1.Cincinnati1.Level3.net) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[08:23:00] SlicerDicer-: mchou: I cant go internal :/
[08:24:00] SlicerDicer-: I got a mini atx case... its a compaq case living a new life totally gutted
[08:24:00] Cardoe: so does directfb work?
[08:24:00] Cardoe: anyone know?
[08:24:00] mchou: SlicerDicer-: a new CPU case will be cheaper than incremental cost of external drive.
[08:24:00] Cardoe: MythTV+directfb
[08:24:00] SlicerDicer-: mchou: ok how do you solve the problem of having more than 2 harddrives to expand the harddrive capacity beyond a terabyte?
[08:25:00] mchou: get a extra ide card.
[08:25:00] SlicerDicer-: now I am a bit foggy on that how many harddrives can those hold?
[08:25:00] mchou: I have 8 drives in my P2 450Mhz :)
[08:25:00] mchou: 4 drives/card.
[08:26:00] mchou: well more than 1TB on my P2 :)
[08:26:00] SlicerDicer-: are there any others that can hold more than 4 drives I am seriously limited on pci slots
[08:26:00] SlicerDicer-: if I wanted to do a second pvr I would be SOL
[08:26:00] mchou: get a new mobo while you're at it :)
[08:26:00] SlicerDicer-: lol
[08:26:00] SlicerDicer-: I just did :)
[08:26:00] mchou: I'm not really joking. ATX is much better than mATX.
[08:27:00] SlicerDicer-: ohh I know

[08:27:00] SlicerDicer-: I will more than likely shove my 2700+ with 1gb ram into my main recording box and just stick that 1.4 into storage space
[08:28:00] mchou: 1.4??
[08:28:00] SlicerDicer-: 1.4ghz cpu sorry
[08:28:00] SlicerDicer-: thats whats currently running my mythtv :)
[08:29:00] mchou: a Socket A mobo "no frills" new only costs $35 these days at Frys.
[08:30:00] mchou: well $35 + tax.
[08:30:00] SlicerDicer-: :)
[08:31:00] mchou: seriously, if I were you I'd just go that rout. mATX is useful only as frontends.
[08:31:00] SlicerDicer-: naw its just kinda crazy for me to replace my current setup main reason I went mATX is cause of how it would fit by my tv
[08:31:00] mchou: route*
[08:31:00] oneo: you guys have an htpc case or a regular computer case?
[08:31:00] mchou: so keep the matx as FE, move all storage on server....
[08:32:00] SlicerDicer-: is it possible to have it store the movies elsewhere on the network?
[08:32:00] SlicerDicer-: ahh good you just answered it
[08:32:00] mchou: SlicerDicer-: yup. Beautify of nfs or smb.
[08:32:00] SlicerDicer-: alright
[08:32:00] mchou: Beauty*
[08:33:00] SlicerDicer-: cause my 2700+ is bloated with how many harddrives it can hold :) 4 sata and 6 ata lol
[08:33:00] mchou: If you want to really blow your mind you can run the FE diskless off the network.
[08:34:00] mchou: I do that with mine.
[08:34:00] mchou: network boot root over nfs.
[08:35:00] SlicerDicer-: FE?
[08:35:00] mchou: frontend.
[08:35:00] SlicerDicer-: hmm
[08:35:00] mchou: less noise.
[08:35:00] SlicerDicer-: sounds like you got quite the setup
[08:35:00] mchou: yup. studied all the angles.
[08:36:00] SlicerDicer-: would 802.11g be enough or does it need to be hardwires?
[08:36:00] topping: xbox works well also... it's cheap and quiet
[08:36:00] topping: PITA to set up tho
[08:36:00] SlicerDicer-: topping: I dont own one so its kinda out of the question hehe
[08:36:00] topping: $150
[08:36:00] mchou: hardwire would be preferred.
[08:37:00] SlicerDicer-: goody.....
[08:37:00] SlicerDicer-: I would have loved to send a few boxes into my garage to cut down on heat
[08:37:00] SlicerDicer-: serious my computers put out so much heat between the 4 of them now that I can heat my main room in my house
[08:37:00] SlicerDicer-: without the electric heat running...
[08:38:00] mchou: yup. that's bad for the environment.
[08:38:00] SlicerDicer-: what you mean bad?
[08:38:00] SlicerDicer-: using that much power?
[08:38:00] mchou: yeah. also keep in mind things like ozone.....
[08:39:00] SlicerDicer-: I live in the woods my house reeks of ozone all day and its hydro power so thats not a problem to me :)
[08:39:00] mchou: topping: I'd hardly call the xbox "quiet"
[08:39:00] mchou: but the xboxII tooks nice.
[08:39:00] topping: i take it your fe's have no fans?

[08:40:00] mchou: wellm not counting PS :)
[08:40:00] topping: my xbox has one fan, period
[08:40:00] SlicerDicer-: mchou: there is no need for my systems to be quiet there is so many fans in this box that it drowns all the others out
[08:40:00] SlicerDicer-: I think there is 12 fans in this box
[08:41:00] mchou: my PS is a 185W
[08:41:00] topping: my ps doesn't have a fan
[08:42:00] mchou: the fan in xbox is extremely loud compared to CPU fans.
[08:42:00] topping: eh?
[08:42:00] SlicerDicer-: main reason for so many fans is people in washington state dont think "air conditioning" is a good idea so the days it does hit 90+ in seattle area I want to be able to use my damn computers lol
[08:42:00] topping: maybe if you have a habit of dropping it a lot
[08:42:00] mchou: my CPU fan is 90mm.
[08:42:00] topping: same here, speed controlled
[08:42:00] mchou: xbox fan is like what, 50mm?
[08:43:00] topping: 90
[08:43:00] topping: it's a very quiet box
[08:43:00] topping: the only thing quieter is probably a mac mini
[08:44:00] topping: or a diskless with no fans, but performance on those suxor
[08:44:00] mchou: topping: when the xbox first came out ppl complained about the noise.
[08:44:00] topping: hmm, maybe they've fixed it then
[08:44:00] mchou: no, they havent
[08:44:00] topping: i have a 1.4 and a 1.6, both have speed control
[08:44:00] topping: and they are both very quiet
[08:45:00] mchou: get a hauppauge MVP and it will be really quiet :)

[08:46:00] mchou: hauppauge MVP does divx now......
[08:46:00] topping: nice
[08:46:00] topping: someone has a myth project for it now

[08:50:00] topping: http://mvpmc.sourceforge.net/idx.php?pg=main
[08:52:00] mchou: heh, nice. Just found the link for hacking in a SPDIF connection.
[08:52:00] topping: changes from 0.1.4 to 0.1.5:  – improved support for the new Hauppauge remote  – improved CIFS performance  – support for MythTV 0.18  – support for playing recordings off multiple MythTV backends  – fix for MythTV daylight savings bug  – initial theme support for changing fonts and widget colors  – add a progress bar to the file browser  – add a crude brightness control

[19:40:00] xris: getting some weirdness with the mythbox I set up here at work.. when you first try to view live tv, you get about 3 seconds, and then everything hangs. video times out after about 10–15 seconds and drops you back to the menu.. if I restart mythbackend, everything works normally. Obviously some sort of on-boot conflict. has anyone run into this before?
[19:41:00] Tommck: xris – I was having timeout/lockup problems that turned out to have something to do with generating preview images..
[19:41:00] laga: it's probably a problem with the module loading?

[19:42:00] laga: xris: i wonder if the backend accesses the cards on starting. i dont think so.
[19:43:00] xris: laga: yeah, no clue. it's odd. not that we'll be rebooting this box very often.
[19:43:00] Tommck: xris – I never saw the point to the previews anyway... takes too long to actually see anything in the recording IMO
[19:43:00] xris: maybe I should just add a backend-restart command into rc.local. heh.

[19:43:00] xris: Tommck: well, better than a thumbnail, imho. heh.

[19:45:00] laga: took me 17 or 18 hours to get the frigging thing to boot.
[19:46:00] xris: damn. still nice.

[19:47:00] laga: but what really bothered me: you have to extract some firmware from the original software. and this is only possible with windows software, and they dont open source it due to IP-issues.

[23:06:00] andy_: Esotericisms, there is not near enough info i would think to make any kind of guess
[23:06:00] Esotericisms: what info do you need?
[23:06:00] andy_: is there any erros in verberous mode
[23:06:00] andy_: or compile in debug mode..
[23:07:00] andy_: or something to get more info
[23:07:00] andy_: that is wayyyy to general of a problem
[23:07:00] Esotericisms: the screen blinks ... where do I look for errors?
[23:07:00] andy_: you can run mythbackend -v all
[23:07:00] andy_: and run mythfrontend -v all
[23:08:00] andy_: then look for errors
[23:08:00] andy_: do any other settings work?
[23:08:00] andy_: could mysql not have write access?
[23:08:00] Esotericisms: I am looking at my errors for the backend
[23:09:00] Esotericisms: that could be ... maybe
[23:09:00] Esotericisms: all it says is
[23:09:00] Esotericisms: "Scheduled 0 items ...."
[23:09:00] andy_: thats normal
[23:09:00] andy_: does mythweb work to schedual
[23:09:00] Esotericisms: don't have it installed yet
[23:10:00] Esotericisms: how do I install it?
[23:10:00] andy_: you need to run knoppmyth if you have these types of basic questions
[23:10:00] andy_: i could type till im blue in the face
[23:11:00] andy_: knoppmyth will make it all just work for you
[23:11:00] Shibz: so how would I get rid of lirc so I can put on an older version?
[23:12:00] andy_: make install should have done that.. unless you installed it to 2 different locations
[23:12:00] Shibz: I don't know where the first one is
[23:12:00] Shibz: it came with knoppmyth
[23:13:00] ole_schoola: <doh.

[23:15:00] andy_: Shibz, you must have done something wrong i have recompile lirc on knoppmyth dozens of times
[23:15:00] slyboots: Having a slight problem with MythTV, It downloads the listings correctly, but its not showing the correct stations in LiveTv
[23:16:00] Shibz: argh i am having so many problems
[23:16:00] andy_ is now known as gr8nash

[23:16:00] Shibz: I also can't get my tuners to work
[23:16:00] gr8nash: Shibz, what version of knoppmyth?
[23:16:00] slyboots: 2005-05–11 23:14:44.921 Channel(/dev/video0): CheckChannel failed. Please verify channel "A0" in the "setup" Channel Editor.
[23:16:00] slyboots: I get a *ton* of errors along those lines when-ever I try to change the station
[23:17:00] Shibz: R5A15.1 I think

[23:17:00] slyboots: Does that mean the mythtv-setup option?
[23:17:00] gr8nash: you have a pvr250?
[23:17:00] slyboots: Or something in Mythfrontend
[23:17:00] Shibz: I have pvr500
[23:17:00] gr8nash: ohh well good luck then
[23:17:00] gr8nash: lots of people cant get it to work..
[23:17:00] gr8nash: the answers are out there though
[23:18:00] slyboots: Im not sure whats going on, I can only get the listings for Station 2, and its showing the wrong channel anyway
[23:19:00] Shibz: I found lotsa places that explain how to get pvr500 working, but nothing ever works for me
[23:19:00] slyboots: when I try to use the number keys to change station, nothign happens and the terminal fills up with that message (although the A0 changes per message)
[23:19:00] gr8nash: slyboots, you need to rerun mythtv-setup
[23:19:00] gr8nash: and setup everyTHING again
[23:19:00] gr8nash: also make sure zap2it labs is setup correctly
[23:20:00] slyboots: zap2it?
[23:20:00] gr8nash: Shibz, you i feel you pain. that why im waiting till its eazy to setup
[23:20:00] gr8nash: slyboots, where are you from?

[23:25:00] Shibz: so nobody knows how to remove a lirc installation?
[23:26:00] slyboots: Right, The errors are gone..
[23:26:00] slyboots: But I still cant change challe
[23:27:00] slyboots: Unless Im doing something daft
[23:28:00] slyboots: Does myth use any sorty of outside program to parse what channel it should switch the TV card to?
[23:29:00] j-rod: hey xris, how hard would it be to take a parameter passed to one url and forward it along to another?
[23:29:00] xris: j-rod: via GET, easy.. POST, not that easy.
[23:30:00] j-rod: such that http://www.anotherdomain.com/anotherpage.php? . . . meparam=blah
[23:31:00] j-rod: (someone at work is asking how to do something like this)
[23:31:00] Beirdo: mod_rewrite should be able to do it
[23:32:00] Beirdo: I'm certainly no expert at using it though :)
[23:32:00] slyboots: Its rather crap that I cant change the channel inside myth
[23:32:00] xris: j-rod: very easy to do with mod_rewrite
[23:32:00] Esotericisms: alright ...
[23:33:00] Esotericisms: I have done a mythfrontend -v all
[23:33:00] xris: and with php, you could just do header("Location: new_url&param=".urlencode($_GET['param']))
[23:33:00] xris: mod_rewrite would probably be better, though
[23:34:00] Esotericisms: I have also done mythbackend -v all
[23:34:00] j-rod: I presume the php way you would need to know what the params were in advance though, yes?
[23:34:00] j-rod: so mod_rewrite would be the way to do it
[23:35:00] _johnp (~jmp@82-69-87-196.dsl.in-addr.zen.co.uk) Quit ("Download Gaim: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/")
[23:35:00] xris: no. there's a $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'] variable
[23:35:00] xris: mod_rewrite would be the best way, though
[23:35:00] Esotericisms: I am not seeing any errors
[23:35:00] slyboots: I've noticed that if i use xawtv before I load mythfrontend, whatever channel I exit xawtv on, thatsa the channel that mythtv shows and sticks on
[23:35:00] agile (~mike@cavok2226.august.net) Quit (Remote closed the connection)

[23:36:00] slyboots: So why does every other TV program change the channel, but not myth, anyone any suggestions?
[23:36:00] xris: j-rod: you want the QSA option (appends the old query string to the end of the new url)
[23:36:00] xris: the rule I just posted takes all http://siliconmechanics.com/foo/ type things and sends them to www.
[23:36:00] Beirdo: slyboots: because your setup is incorrect..
[23:36:00] xris: also adds a "premanent redirect" header
[23:36:00] Esotericisms: when I go to upcoming recordings ... it is empty... my guide doesn't show that I have set any of the shows to record ...
[23:36:00] slyboots: in what way?
[23:36:00] Esotericisms: when I go to set priorities it says I have like 10 in there
[23:37:00] gr8nash: slyboots, since we cant look into your box.. you need to done sme troubleshooting and ask more specific quesitons
[23:37:00] j-rod: cool, thanks xris
[23:37:00] Esotericisms: but now I have no way of deleting them
[23:37:00] gr8nash: or your never gonna get an answer
[23:37:00] Beirdo: I dunno, did you go into the channel editor like it said to?
[23:37:00] slyboots: Yes, I dont see anything that seems to relate to what channel that station apears on
[23:37:00] slyboots: the only thing even vauly close would be "callsign"
[23:38:00] Beirdo: I'm sure there's a howto out there somewhere for UK users
[23:38:00] Esotericisms: can anyone help?
[23:39:00] j-rod: xris, just drop the ^ in front of siliconmechanics.com if I want to take domain.com and www.domain.com and forward them?
[23:39:00] ** j-rod needs to read up on mod_rewrite... **
[23:39:00] j-rod: or do I need a wildcard?
[23:39:00] xris: j-rod: or you could just drop the RewriteCond altogether.
[23:40:00] xris: (and put the NC into the RewriteRule options)
[23:41:00] xris: it's actually pretty well-explained here: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_rewrite.html that's usually where I go to get info when I need new rules, etc.
[23:42:00] Esotericisms: alright ... using mythweb ... I can see all the recordings that I attempted to setup in the "Recording Schedules" tab ... but I can't see them in the "Scheduled Recordings" tab
[23:42:00] Esotericisms: help please
[23:42:00] Beirdo: Esotericisms: have you run mythfilldatabase recently?
[23:43:00] Esotericisms: not recently
[23:43:00] Esotericisms: should i?
[23:43:00] Beirdo: it should be run daily
[23:43:00] slyboots: I dont understand how Myth knows what channel a station is transmitting on, there is no place to enter such data
[23:43:00] Beirdo: if you haven't, then that's likely the problem
[23:43:00] Beirdo: slyboots: it's in the channel editor
[23:44:00] Esotericisms: should it be run with or without mythbackend and mythfrontend running
[23:44:00] Beirdo: Esotericisms: shouldn't matter, I don't think
[23:44:00] slyboots: Were exactly in the channle editor, I see nothing that even comes close to a channel setting
[23:44:00] gr8nash: slyboots, click on a CHANNEl
[23:44:00] gr8nash: it takes you to the edit screen
[23:45:00] slyboots: Supprisinly I've tried that already
[23:45:00] gr8nash: maybe you have a special version of myth =/
[23:45:00] slyboots: Right "Channel Number, Callsign?(wtf). Source, Format"
[23:45:00] Esotericisms: doesn't mythfilldatabase just put the info from datadirect into the database for display in the tvguide?
[23:46:00] xris: ooh, my favorite grocery store has fresh wasabi back in stock....
[23:46:00] slyboots: That still does not explain why its locked on one channel, and why if I change the channel via xawtv, myth keeps the last channel I was viewing (in xawtv)
[23:47:00] Esotericisms: Beirdo, doesn't mythfilldatabase just take the data from datadirect.com and put it in the mysql database?
[23:47:00] Beirdo: yes
[23:50:00] topping: hmm, anyone recognize the error "DVDPerfectThread read failed for block 0" when trying to rip a dvd?
[23:50:00] Esotericisms: when I use mythweb to schedule a recording ... I click the update recoding database button after i select the options: 'this show only', 'profile=livetv'
[23:50:00] Esotericisms: and it just reloads to the same page
[23:50:00] Esotericisms: I go to the "Scheduled Recordings" and there is nothing there
[23:51:00] j-rod: wasabi!
[23:51:00] j-rod: yum...
[23:51:00] gr8nash: topping, i have seen that a few times
[23:51:00] xris: Esotericisms: then something's not working right. it *will* just reload the same page, but it should schedule the recording.
[23:51:00] ** j-rod pondered grabbing lunch at the Nara Grill today **
[23:51:00] xris: j-rod: central market ROCKS. too bad it's way up in shoreline.
[23:52:00] topping: gr8nash: does it go away on different dvds?
[23:52:00] Esotericisms: alright ... any ideas as to what is wrong?!
[23:52:00] j-rod: never been to central market
[23:52:00] ** topping reaches for another disc **
[23:52:00] xris: fresh wasabi is also infinitely better than the green mustard crap that you get 99% the time.
[23:52:00] j-rod: better than Uwajimaya?
[23:52:00] mchou: lol, definitely better than Uwajimaya.
[23:52:00] xris: yeah. it's not just an asian market. supposedly 4th largest produce section of any grocery store in the country.
[23:53:00] Esotericisms: ??
[23:53:00] gr8nash: topping, yes
[23:53:00] ** j-rod knows the family that owns Uwajimaya **
[23:53:00] gr8nash: i ******************THINk***************** its the new copy protection
[23:53:00] xris: Esotericisms: not really sure. mythweb would throw errors if it couldn't set up a schedule.
[23:53:00] topping: hmm, it just needed to be ejected and reloaded
[23:53:00] gr8nash: but thats just a guess.. it only does it on some dvd's with me..
[23:53:00] Esotericisms: damnit
[23:54:00] mchou: I think Berkeley Bowl is far superior than central market.
[23:54:00] topping: so how are they going to add new copy protection without breaking a bunch of players?
[23:54:00] xris: try a different schedule type
[23:54:00] topping: or don't they care?
[23:54:00] gr8nash: libdvdcss hasnt been updated since 2003 =(
[23:54:00] Esotericisms: I really don't want to have to reinstall again
[23:54:00] xris: mchou: which central market? there are 4.
[23:54:00] gr8nash: topping, dont know..but sony did it
